Acceptable Excuses for Student Absences

Teachers should obtain a signed written excuse from a parent or guardian when a student is absent or tardy. If a reason is given which requires the principal's approval, the note should be sent to the office for signature. The teacher must keep written tardiness/absence excuses on file. Acceptable excuses for temporary absence from school include the following: 1. Student illness

2. Death in the immediate family 3. Observance of a religious holiday 4. Family emergency 5. Circumstances that cause reasonable concern to the parent or legal guardian for the safety of a child6. Other situations beyond the control of the student as determined by the principal

Page 11: A DMC JOINT EFFORT Student Discipline, PBIS, Uniforms, Systems & Structures Dr. Amy Muhammad

TARDIES: STUDENTSEXTENDED EXCUSED ABSENCES

If a student has an extended excused absence from school, the teacher will base the due date of all missed assignments on the number of days the student has been absent from school. For example, if the student is absent for three days, the teacher will give the student three days to make up all missed assignments. If the student does not turn in the missing work at that time, the teacher may deny credit to that student or use their discretion in special situations (i.e. death in the family, etc.)

UNEXCUSED ABSENCESIf the written excuse does NOT fall within one of the above categories, or a student does not bring in a written excuse, the absence is considered unexcused. If tardiness and/or absences continue, please notify the Dr. Wise and Ms. Rivera or her designee using the chronic absence/tardy form. Intervention procedures are as follows; The schedule below should be used to govern teacher intervention. When a student is absent for:

○ 3 consecutive days teacher calls home○ 5 consecutive days letter sent from the office○ 8 consecutive days certified letter sent from the office

HALLWAY EXPECTATIONSTeachers are responsible for monitoring their class lines as they move throughout the building. Misbehavior in the halls should be dealt with directly and immediately. There should be no talking and lines should move swiftly down the correct side of the hall to their destination, without disturbing other classes. Teachers should refrain from leaving students stationary in the hall for long periods of time as this breeds misbehavior. EXPECTATIONS FOR HALLWAY BEHAVIOR:

✓ Students pass through the hallway in two lines✓ Students and teachers are silent at all times! (i.e. LEVEL 0 in the

hallways)✓ Students walk; not run in the hallway✓ Students reach their destination quickly and quietly without disturbing other

classrooms. ✓ Students will transition up the stairs for entry, and specials using the Franklin

stairwell.✓ Students will transition down the stairs for dismissal, lunch and specials using

the Troy stairwell.✓ The universal hallway movement is counterclockwise, arrows will be visible

Page 13: A DMC JOINT EFFORT Student Discipline, PBIS, Uniforms, Systems & Structures Dr. Amy Muhammad

We Must Be The Change We Wish To See The development of self-discipline is encouraged in classrooms where students learn to stay on task and avoid disrupting others. Students must and will learn to respect one another as well as the authority of all staff members. Listed below are guidelines for establishing and maintaining classroom rules and procedures:

1. Discipline is EVERYONE'S responsibility.

2. DO NOT MAKE ANY RULES THAT YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO ENFORCE.

3. Classroom rules and procedures must be simple, clear and appropriate.

4. Be specific regarding your expectations.

5. Teach rules as thoroughly as you would teach any lesson, and include modeling and practice in addition to explanation and discussion.

6. Assistance from the Security Team and Administration will be provided to handle serious behavior problems. Teachers are asked to contact the office to request assistance..

7. KNOW THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM AND DEAL WITH THE SOURCE.

8. Punishment work should not be assigned. Teachers will provide a packet for students that must be turned into the teachers mailbox

COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS

Teachers are expected to communicate with parents regularly when students are not meeting school–wide and classroom expectations. When a child receives a detention or is referred to the culture and climate team, parents must be contacted by the referring teacher. At times it is very difficult to get in touch with working parents during the school day. It is imperative that communication between home and school is consistent. It is important that correct home and work numbers are maintained in your students’ files. Morton/Dodge Campus School sends out newsletters and other forms of communication to parents. Teachers are also encouraged to send home weekly notes regarding classroom projects, upcoming field trips, celebrations, etc.

WE set the tone….TOGETHER

SCHOOL UNIFORMS ARE MANDATORY. Students who choose not to wear the uniform will be penalized according the Chicago Public Schools Uniform Discipline Code. Teachers should monitor students' dress according to the Morton/Dodge Campus Parent/Student Handbook. The Director of Culture and Climate should be informed of recurring problems. Staff should incorporate monthly incentives to reward student attendance and uniforms. Students will only support what we as staff members monitor.

Page 22: A DMC JOINT EFFORT Student Discipline, PBIS, Uniforms, Systems & Structures Dr. Amy Muhammad

DMC DISCIPLINE PROCESSWe have several layers of support for handling disciplinary infractions at Morton/Dodge Campus. The director of culture and climate, co-principals, and security personnel all have the capacity to support teachers and students with handling disciplinary infractions.

The following steps are will be implemented for students in violation of DMC discipline guidelines: Step One: Teacher is to notify the main office when they are in need of assistance with a disruptive student.

Step Two: Teacher must fill out a discipline referral checklist to accompany any student that is being removed from the classroom.

Step Three: Depending on the situation, a 15 minute or less cool down period will be given to student by the security staff member and a student re-engagement form must be filled out by student and given to the respective teacher upon return to the classroom.

Step Four: If a student is unable to return to the classroom, the parent or guardian will be notified to pick up their student. If the parent or guardian is unable to pick up the student, the CPS Student Code of Conduct will be followed for further disciplinary action. http://cps.edu/Pages/ParentResourcesStudentCodeofConduct.asp

RESTROOMSTeachers are expected to develop a clear and consistent system for restroom usage. Class restroom breaks should be planned for twice a day. Classroom bathroom breaks should be conducted as quietly, quickly, and efficiently as possible. Teachers are encouraged to pair up with their cluster level partners to organize bathroom breaks. If there is a restroom in the classroom, students are expected to use that facility. Teachers must inspect the restrooms before and after their class has finished using them. No students should use the restrooms unsupervised.

✓ Students are not to bring writing materials into the restrooms.✓ THERE SHOULD BE NO TALKING IN THE HALLWAY!✓ Teachers must have a clear procedure for restroom breaks!✓ Teachers must monitor the length of time their class uses the restroom with the

school provided stopwatch. Our goal is for all classes to complete restroom break with 7-10 minutes.

MINOR VS. MAJOR INFRACTIONS

The following chart clearly defines the roles and responsibilities for dealing with discipline issues among Morton/Dodge Campus staff members.

Teacher managed: Behavior should be handled by the classroom teacher using systems for rewards, punishments, parent communication, etc. Please see PBIS link for intervention resources. PBISWorld.com Home Page

Office/ administration managed: Behavior requires the attention of administrative staff and/or the dean of students. Teachers should document the offense in a discipline referral.

SUSPENSIONSTeachers should keep records of actions taken to solve discipline problems. A discipline report form must be completed whenever a student is referred to the dean of students. This report should include date, offense, and efforts to correct the problem.

Pupils may be suspended or expelled from attendance at school for sufficient cause and according to the Uniform Discipline Code.

1. Action to suspend a student or to recommend a student for expulsion must be preceded by efforts to resolve the unacceptable behavior, except in extreme conditions which clearly and substantially threaten the health and safety of persons or the order of the school by the student’s possession of a firearm, assault on a staff member, or distribution of drugs. Such efforts should include the following persons:

a. The studentb. Teachers who work with the student c. Parents or guardians of the student d. Counselors e. Appropriate instructional support staff members f. Administrators

g. Other agencies who might be working with the student, such as probation or a mental health clinic.

2. The Principal and Director of Culture and Climate must arrange for the maintenance of complete and accurate records of the efforts that have been made to resolve the unacceptable behavior. Such records should provide evidence that due process has been provided.

3. Before taking action to suspend or recommend for expulsion, the principal will hold a hearing with the student, the charging person, and if appropriate, any adult witness for either side. Accurate and complete records of this hearing will be maintained.

How does the Pre-Order Process work?

~ Teachers will have pre-order forms in their mailboxes by Monday Morning~ Pre-order forms will be picked up at the end of the school day on Wednesday by a member of the Culture and Climate team.~Orders will be delivered to the classroom on Friday and teachers will pass out the students pre-bagged gift(by name) to students at the end of the day.~ Once the orders have been placed on wednesday, the student must not incur any major infractions in order to receive their PBIS incentives on Friday. The student will receive the pre-order once that situation has been properly handled (i.e. detention served, suspension served, saturday school served).

OUR STUDENTS MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS AT ALL TIMES.
