MENTAL CREATINGT F you just like to dream, read no further. There

comes a time when your fancies must be  broughtinto light— and stand the test of everyday, hardrealities. Ar e you one of the thousands— perhapsmillions— whose thoughts never get beyond thestage of  wistful wishing?  Do you often come tofrom a d aydream with the sigh, “ If only I couldbring it about— make it real?”

All things begin with thought— it is what fol-lows that may take your life out of the class of those who hope and dream. Thought energy, likeanything else, can be dissipated— or it can be madeto produce actual effects. I f you know how to place

your thoughts  you can stimulate the creative proc-esses within your mind—through them you canassemble things and conditions of your world intoa happy life of accomplishment. Mental creating  does not depend upon a mag ical process. It con-sists of knowing how to marshal your thoughts intoa power that draws, compels and organizes your experiences into a worthwhile design of living.

WHY YOU ARE AS YOU AREand IV fiat Ifou &an ffo -{-Mrout SJt!

DID you ever stop to think why you do the things you do? Have you often—

when alone—censored yourself for impul-sive urges, for things said or done that did not truly represent y o u r r e a l t h o u g h ts , and which placed you at a disadvantage?

Most persons are c r e a t u r e s o f s e n s a -t ion —they react to instinctive, impelling  influences which surge up within them and which they do not understand— or know  how to control . Just as simple living  things involuntarily withdraw from irri-

tations, so likewise thousands of men and women are content to be motivated by their undirected thoughts which haphaz-ardly rise up in their consciousness. Today y o u m u s t s e l l y o u r s e lf to others—bring  forth your best abilities, manifest your personality, if you wish to hold a position,

make friends, or impress others with your  capabilities. You must learn how to draw  upon your latent talents and powers, not  be bent like a reed in the wind. There are  simple, natural laws and principles which— if you understand them—make all this

possible.

For centuries the Rosicrucians (not a religious or-ganization), a worldwide m ovement o f men andwomen devoted to the study of life and its hiddenprocesses, hav e shown thousand s how to prob e thesemy steries of self. Renowned philosophers and scien-tists have been Rosicrucians—today men and wo-men in every walk of life owe their confidence andability to solve personal problems to the Ro sicrucianprivate, sensible method o f selfdevelopment. Sendtoday for a copy of the book, “ The Secret Heritage,”

which will be se nt to you w ithout obligation. I t willtell you o f the Rosicrucians and what they can   do for you. Address: Scribe A. U. B.

Your lob! Photography[Continued, jrom page  56]

etc. Ph otograph y is an art as well as a scienceand a p ro fe ss io n ; hence m e c h a n ic a l ab i li ty(though a desirable factor as an indication of  pat ience and man ual ski ll ) i s much les s importantthan in many other vocations.

Nobody I ’ e a l l y kno ws ho w many wo rk ingpho tograph ers there are today. Th e last census, which is almost ten years out of date now. gave40,000 as the number of photographers in theordinary commercial field, with another 13.000in the man ufacturing, sell ing, or other specializedbran ches. This gives a total of 53,000, which iscerta inly an underes t im ate . M any photographersare hard to c las si fy . They m ay report themselvesto be laboratory workers , radiologists , photo-engravers , or any one of a hundred other special-

ists where photography is combined with other pro fession al training. In addition, the last fiveyears have seen an immense increase in the num-ber o f amateurs who are constantly graduatinginto profess ionals as they start making money outof what they began b y regarding as a hobby.

Regardless of the number of people already inthe f ield, your chances of making a l iving withyour camera (as suming that you know your stuff) are good. Fo r one thing, yo ur finishedprints do their own sell ing. You don’t have totalk about your experience or lack of it—what

you can do is right there on pape r. Exce pt for advertis ing photography, which usually centersin urban districts, and the movies in Hollywood, photographic opportunities are well distributed

geograp hically. You can start right where youare. Pho tography is not seasonal, although some

of i ts branches may be. In sum m er there i s muchamateur f in ishing work; in January, graduation

pictures ; in June, brides—something pictorial ishappening all the year round.

A high school education, naturally, is not

enough to m ake a photographer out of you. It ispossible for you to train yourself, to learn by trialand error, but except in the s implest branchesthis method is less and less satis factory because

of the increasing com plexity of the art. Many of  the larger colleges and universities have coursesin photography. Vocational schools in larger com m unities offer such training. If you live in afairs ized town, there is very l ikely to be a cam eraclub with laboratory facil ities where you canwork an d learn, associating with other enthusiastswho are more advanced than you are.

Specialized schools in photography offer twotypes of courses , res idential and correspondence. In residence courses you work at the studio, ful-f i l l ing ass ignments under the supervis ion of pro-

fess ionals , with all necessary equipment provided—cameras , darkroom, chemicals , etc. There areseparate courses in commercial and portraitphotography, other courses in motion picture andin color work. It will take you anyw here from8 to 24 weeks to complete a commercial course, depending on the number of hours per day youput in.

You will need some kind of a camera and a fewsimple essentials in taking a correspondencecourse. Here, too, you receive ass ignmen ts . Printsand papers are sent in, examined by profes-

sionals, technical errors and possibilities for improvem ent carefully pointed out. A correspon d-ence course usually takes somewhat longer tocomplete; you regulate the speed to suit yourself .

One striking advantage of photography is thatyou can earn while learning. I have just seen acheck for $32, made out to a young man whois half through his training course. He m ade s ix negatives of a model posing in a popular brandof hosiery. Of the s ix prints made from these, four were bought by the customer at $8 each. The entire operation represented about one day’stime.

[Continued on page 120]

N o, this is not a new type of highpow ered rifle or shotgu n.It is a 35 mm. "miniature” camera fitted with an extremelongrange telescopic lens for closeups of objects a longdistance away. Th e gunstock mo untin g is necessary to steadythe app aratu s. With a specialized outfit like this, a photo g-rapher can take "impossible” pictures of wild animals inthe field, of individual players in football or baseball games,of airplan es in /light, etc. Tr ick pictures like this earn agood price.

What equipm ent does a photographer need? He re is whatRichard K. W ood, widelyknown sports photographer o f North Chattanooga, Tenn., uses in his commercial work.Left to right: Auto Grafiex, with extra telescopic lens, rollfilm camera, filmpack camera. Access ories include exp osu remeter, field glasses, carrying cases, and flying goggles. Each

camera serves a speoific purpose.

Your Job—Drafting[Continued from p age 118]

Seme corporations maintain their own trainingschools, affording a method of getting paid whileyou learn. If you have a leaning tow ard someparticular branch of drafting—airplane enginedesign, for instance—you w ill do well to make in-quiries in the f ield and you may f ind a companythat will accept you for training. Th is is not theusual practice, however, for the majority of em-plo ye rs do not. care to tak e on gree n hands. Thisattitude may be a reflection of the fact that cur-rently there are many graduate engineers tochoose from, ow'ing to the increased output of colleges.

In your  own community, i f i t is of fair s ize, there may be colleges or technical schools withexcellent courses in drafting. Inqu iry at you r

local Board of Education offices will give youinformation on such courses and the costs of  tuition, as well as entry requirem ents . Since all  of these factors show wide variance, it is im-practical to list them here.

Of all subjects taught by correspondence, dra fting is the be st suited to this method. Aswe have already seen, drafting is “paper work”and that is essentially the method of corre-spondence study. Where correspondence trainingis of doubtful benefit in becoming an airplanepilot, as we observed in the April issue, it is

excellently adapted to drafting and design studybecause of the nature of the occupation. The average time required to complete a draft-

ing and design course by correspondence is threeye ars, or 1.200 stud y hours. One such coursecosts $147, another $180, covering all subjectsnecessary for men who wish to adopt drafting asa profession. Another mechanical drawing coursewith mathematics enough to qualify you as aprac tical draftsm an costs $155. A course withenough mathematics and mechanical drawing toenable you to “speak the language” and readblueprints, without polishing off your technique

of making complicated drawings, costs $85 to $90.We have said you have to take to mathematics

like a candidate to a baby, and a listing of subjectsincluded in both mechanical drawing, and draft-ing and design courses, will speedily prove it.Here they are: arithm etic, elements of algebra, logarithms, geometry and trigonometry, geomet-rical drawing. In a mechanical drawing course

you get, in addition to these and to the mainsubject, elements of projection drawing and m a-chine sketching. In the dra ftsm an ’s cou rse youwill add such subjects as l ink mechanisms, gear-

ing, pulleys and belting, elementary chemistry, strength and testing of materials , and machinedesign. If any of those sound like bad medicineto you (they sound like work in anybody’slanguage, and they are  work) you can drop thedra fting idea wh ile there ’s still time. In retu rnfor its rewards, the career dem ands plenty of goodoldfashioned brain sweat.

Look into the method of training which mostappe als to you. If you s ign on as an apprentice, you’ l l earn money while you learn but it won’tbe a great deal and unless you go ahead unusu allyfast you will have to invest about three years of  you r time at the job. If you study in spare time, you won’t get paid for drafting but you willprobably have a daytime job and you may bofarther ahead in the long run by drawing downa draf tsman’s wages when you have completedyour course.

All of these are factors which, being a level-headed sort with a practical draftsman’s mind, you ar e well equipped to decide for yourself . Itis ordinary good sense to weigh carefully in thelight of your own needs the advanjages that

dif ferent schools or dif ferent training methodsmay offer you.

Once  you  have your draftsman’s diploma, thebig task remaining is to get a job. If you havelearned your stuff in a drafting room, your prob-lem is s implif ied—you s imply go ahead whereyou are. If you have taken a correspondencecourse, your school very probably maintains anemployment service which may put you in touchwith ju st the right job for you. Trad e schoolsfrequently have such services too; in fact, insti-tutions training draftsmen are logical sources for

an employer to turn to when he wants men hecan depend upon. One large school reports thatit is easier to place draftsmen, or beginners indrafting, than it is students of any other technical

jo b.Help wanted columns in newspapers in indus-

trial cities ordinarily have m ore ads for draftsmenthan for other specialized vocations. To holddown a job once you’ve landed it you have to begood, for s ince ev erything you know shows up onpaper there’s no concealing it. The practicaladvantages of choosing some special field andstickin g to it are obvious. Drafting , for instance,

is an effective passkey into the attractive field of aviation, recently discussed in this series.

One disadvantage of drafting, i f you are anindividualist, is that there is very little oppor-tunity of going into business on your own. as youcan if you are a photographer or radio serviceman. It is true that some draftsmen m ake a goodliving as free lances , but generally speaking youwill have to go to work for a corporation or asmall employer. By combining drafting withother engineering knowledge, such as arch i-tecture, you may be able to set up shop  s u c -

cessfully.Bu t the typical draftsman, though able to stand

on his own feet and accept responsibility, is ateamworker by nature, for large projects theseday s aren’t completed by a s ingle man. An auto-mobile represents the combined d rafting labors of  thou sand s of men. If you are cut out for the job

penetrat ing power, dri l lers are a lready contem-plating going down more than four miles in their search for gold!

Their hopes are justif ied by past pei ' formances.

The huge rig mentioned is engineered to dril l17,500 feet. Others, planned to go down only10,000, have been landed well below 13,000. So,say petroleum engineers , there’s no reason whythe big fellow can’t hit four miles, or more.

Off the Gulf coast of Louis iana several rigs ,s tanding on submerged barges are pres s ing downthrough the salt water sands into submarine de-posits lying nearly three miles below the oceanbed. In Dewey County, Oklahoma, a bit recentlyrested on the bottom at 14.582 feet. Recent sur-veys on Washington’s Olympic peninsula, called

the “last wilderness” of American oil exploration, indicate oilbearing marine beds to be nearly s ix miles thick.

When dril lers reach the bottom of those beds, whose l imestone bases probably mark the depthend of the world's oil supply, they'll go downwith incredible speed, and perhaps at a muchlower cost than is now anticipated. Three yearsago, oil companies spent $300,000 and more todrill a 15,000footer, taking nearly a year to dothe job. Now they can perform this miracle inless than two months at half the cost!

Heretofore, only the cost of dril ling and e xistingprices for petroleum products stood in the wayof reaching sensational depths. Now, with defensegiving a vital reason for f inding new oil beds, the dril ls are really beginning to go down deep.

“We’ll find new fields,” claimed one enthusiasticdril ler, “if we have to bore through to China!”
