Goals

Establish KIM and conduct strategic planning Develop a wireless and mobile Wits strategy, and first phase

implementation Review the development of e-Learning at Wits and establish a

21st Century, innovation-based structure and process for eLearning

Consolidate various Free and Open initiatives at Wits to create synergy and improve positive impact

Enhance efficiency through administrative and support systems Explore opportunities to enhance library initiatives through latest

generation technologies, particularly using FOSS where possible

Miscellaneous academic initiatives

KIM strategic planning

Establish strategic planning based on the Good-to-Great framework, and develop an overall Knowledge and Information Management strategy

Develop, present and discuss the TIPS (Technology, Innovation, Process, Support) model for innovation based on people-process-technology

Begin creating the support and technology innovation capacity, building on

internal capacity use of student interns relationship with Wits initiatives enhancing the skills of KIM staff making better use of FOSS and FOSS procedures strictly managed relationships with private sector partners.

Wireless & mobile Wits

Develop strategy Create implementation projects

e.g. Hotspots e.g. Podcast e.g. Mobile phone application

Investigate feasibility of worldwide mobility Research trends in mobile applications to support

Teaching-and-learning Research Community engagement (e.g. DAS@MXit)

eLearning

Design an eLearning area based on the TIPS model (where the 'process' P also represents pedagogy), and propose an eLearning unit be established in KIM

Establish example eLearning site based on FOSS (KEWL3), together with demonstration project, and have Java development team member trained to create innovation example.

Note that this is a demonstration project and does not represent a decision around eLearning technology

Relegate the use of the concept LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEMto the 20th Century where it belongs!

Participate in national eLearning standards processes

Identify eLearning 'lighthouses'

Free and Open Wits initiatives

Strategy to enhance the use, creation and support of FOSS

in conjunction with existing and new proprietary technologies that make up the current the de facto strategy

Devise a Free and Open Content strategy, encompassing Free and Open Courseware

Membership of Open Courseware Consortium Institutional Repository

Improvement plan for the Wits institutional repository establish a presentation repository

General Content

Administrative and support systems

Investigation and planning for the Oracle Student System successor

Review Management Information opportunities, and improve access to management information both vertically and horizontally

Implement a CRM solution Establish a portal project that will devise a portal strategy,

and begin implentation Document management solution

Administrative and support systems

Finalize support arrangements for HEMIS reporting system and ensure that HEMIS reporting is not at risk

Review staffing requirements in relation to risks in MIU Review / audit all software licenses and support costs Replacement of the ERP servers and Storage Area

Network, concurrent with a review of the data centre architecture.

Enhance library initiatives

Explore opportunities to enhance library initiatives through latest generation technologies, particularly using FOSS where possible

Archive digitization, including building the semantic connected archive making use of the TIPS model.

Hold a workshop with representatives from Sun Microstems, and other semantic archive projects

Potential commercial project

Bring the Copyright and Access to Knowledge information service into KIM as an official Wits initiative, and provide facilities to enhance this service

Institutional repositories

Academic initiatives

Establish a video streaming project, linked to media rich web technologies

Based on Chisimba and IceCast tools with plugins

Opportunity to create a low-costkit for deploymentin any venue

Academic initiatives

Google gadgets research project in eLearning, and apply to Google for funding

Identify someone in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering who would be interested in doing it in collaboration with the FSIU at UWC.

Academic initiatives

Application to SAFIPA for the JCSE to become a partner in the AVOIR project

A way to build FOSS capacity within Wits

Explore options for Wits video online

Challenges

Federated nature of Faculties We don't necessarily know what the level of activity is in the areas under KIM

across the institution So we have to create an enabling environment with some 'channeling'

We (or our auditors) confuse us with a bank This inhibits innovation Need for balance

Classroom infrastructure ?? Power of vendors Lock-in inertia Skills

We must grow some timber! Fast but not balsa!

Positive factors

Energy, passion, thirst Smart and very committed people Strong academic departments with which we can build

synergy Pool of potential interns World class strengths on which to build Funding opportunities
