A Food Pantry for Whitely

This month I would just like to take a moment to personally thank all of our WCC Partners for their continued support and encouragement. There is no way that we could do the things we do without all of you. To all of the Churches and Businesses, Foundations and Administrations, all of the City Officials and Community Organizations, School and Universities, Students and Faculty, to all of our Board members and Committee Chairs, Friends and Family, I want to say, “Thank You!” You have displayed and

demonstrated the true essence of how Muncie can operate and what can be achieved through Unity.

You have shared your time, your talents and your treasure, you have given us your ideas, insight and influence and have helped us grow and expand our vision for this community. I am humbled by the magnitude of support and generosity we have received and only wish that it could be communicated and reported in a greater way. People need to know that there is this kind of collaboration and that these kinds of relationships are being built for the betterment of Muncie. Thank you all again for not just your partnership but also your friendship.

A Letter from the President

Working towards a solution for food insecurity

THANK YOU!

Special thanks to

IU Health Ball Memorial

Hospital for printing this

newsletter.

Whitely Community Council is partnering

with other wonderful Muncie non-profits

like Second Harvest and Edible Muncie in

order to develop a food pantry that will

also double as a grocery store for the area.

This idea combines the traditional pantry concept with the idea of time banking, so that those truly in need will have free access to healthy nutritious food. Those with low-income who do not want to accept handouts, or those of any income who simply want access to healthy food locally, will have two options for how to utilize the location – they can either pay money just like a normal grocery store, or they can pay with their time by completing volunteer hours around the community, manning the store itself, or gardening to help supply local produce to the store. Essentially people can pay with money or they can pay with time. (Continued)

(Continued) A Food Pantry for Whitely

Our hope is that the Whitely community and its supporters will help this project to move forward and get involved from the beginning. There are three ways we would love for you to get involved. 1. FUNDING: WCC has secured the needed funds

for an endowment through Community Foundation. The current objective is to secure startup funding for an initial investment in property purchase, construction, and getting the food pantry/grocery established. Donations to help with startup funding for this project can be sent to Whitely Community Council at P.O. Box 665, Muncie, IN 47308. Checks should be made out to Whitely Community Council with the phrase “food insecurity” written in the memo line, to ensure the funds go to the appropriate project. Your donations, hard work, and support are essential to the success of this pantry/grocery store.

2. GARDENING: We need to set up a system of gardens and orchards in the Whitely area that can supply the store and provide fresh produce to the neighborhood. For the gardens to be sustainable they need to be attached to a network of hardworking, community-minded folks who can dedicate small amounts of time to keep the garden well-tended year after year. The ideal location for these gardens would be adjacent to churches in Whitely. There is no organization better for a task like this than a church, and if our local churches could establish gardens and create an expectation that parishioners donate their time to keeping it maintained, this could be such a great success. If you belong to a church in Whitely and are interested in helping to start a garden, please contact us.

3. ADVISING: Lastly, we need respected community leaders and faith leaders to help form an advisory committee for this project

that can help shepherd it through its early stages and set it up for success.

If you’re interested in doing any one of these things we would be so grateful. We absolutely need help from our residents, our supporters, our local faith community, and other local nonprofits. It is only if we all pull together that this project will succeed. We want to move quickly on this project and hope to have made major strides in establishing the pantry/grocery by the end of 2016. Please contact Cornelius and Mary Dollison at [email protected] with questions, comments, or pledges of support. Your help would mean so much to WCC and will do so much to help move this community forward.

Congratulations to the Howells!

Whitely Community Council members Karen and Ben Howell are Muncie’s Persons of the Year! We’ve known about these gentle, generous community servants for a long time, and we are so very happy to see them get the recognition they richly deserve! Thank you, Karen and Ben, for your servant leadership in Whitely and beyond. Congratulations on this award!

East Side Transformation Indiana Forge and Indiana Steel & Wire Sites to be Revamped

The Ball State Next System Teach-In is the local regional initiative of a national Teach-In aimed at initiating a conversation around how people and communities can proactively engage the systemic challenges they face now and in coming decades. In the morning sessions, members of the community and the university will focus on current drivers of local system change (economic, social, environmental), resources available to optimize community success (energy, water, food, local collaboration), and strategies for helping communities thrive (cooperatives, local resource-flows, etc.).

(SOURCE: Muncie-Delaware County, Indiana Economic Development Alliance)

At an unveiling ceremony on the morning of March 31st, Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler announced a transformative plan for the former King Indiana Forge and Indiana Steel & Wire industrial sites, located next to the White River at the city’s eastern gateway, near the 2200 block of East Jackson Street/Highway 32. The plan, a result of decades of collaboration, was detailed by Tyler and representatives of numerous partners on the project. Significant pieces of the plan include the Kitselman Trailhead, a new eastern gateway to the City of Muncie, the Muncie Arts & Culture Trail, and the Kitselman Pure Energy Park (KPEP).

Mayor Dennis Tyler noted, “This project is about catalyzing a revitalization of the City of Muncie, and ties into the fundamental themes of our ADVANCE ECI Regional Cities plan. The number of partners involved

Ball State Next System Teach-In

When and Where:

8:00am - 3:00pm April 29, Cardinal Hall

LA Pittenger Center Ball State University

What is a teach-in?

A teach-in is similar to a forum on any complicated issue. The main difference between a teach-in and a seminar is the refusal to limit the discussion to a specific time frame or a strict subject area. Teach-ins are meant to be open, practical, and oriented

toward action. "Teach-Ins" were popularized during the U.S. government's involvement in Vietnam.

In an afternoon workshop, community groups will play a game where they apply economic development strategies to provision the community to thrive. The Teach-In is seen as a seed that will grow and help the local community flourish. The closing session focuses on seeing positive changes occurring in the community not as separate initiatives but as the next system that is emerging locally. It identifies strategies for discovering and leveraging interconnections among these changes so as to enhance neighborhood and community self-reliance and ability to thrive in the next system.

in today’s announcement is a testament to Muncie’s focused and collaborative approach to creating the public/private partnerships that are necessary for talent attraction, increased investment, and population growth.”

The Kitselman Trailhead will occupy 18 acres on the former King Indiana Forge and Indiana Steel and Wire sites, and will link Indiana’s longest trail, the 62-mile Cardinal Greenway, with the White River Trail and the Muncie Arts & Culture Trail. The location will be the setting of a new, visually-compelling gateway for the City of Muncie in a beautiful, bold design that not only provides a significant entry in the city, but puts people at the center of this new entrance. $4.5 million in private and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) financial support toward the $9 million project cost has been secured for the Kitselman Trailhead. Paint the Park

Year of Color Coming to McCulloch Park

Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 14th. That’s

when we’ll be painting McCulloch Park in gorgeous

pastels as part of Whitely’s Year of Color.

In cooperation with the Muncie Parks Department, the

City of Muncie, Muncie-Delaware Clean and Beautiful,

and others, we present “Paint the Park.” Volunteers

will work together with Parks Department staff to give

the park a makeover: painting stages, benches,

playground equipment, and picnic tables throughout

the park. We will also work to plant flowers and

saplings, pick up trash, and generally beautify our

beloved local park.

A day of hard work will be followed by an evening of

fun, as the Muncie Parks Department plans to provide

live entertainment and refreshments for Whitely

volunteers and residents.

Follow Whitely Community Council on Facebook for

more details as things develop.
