I am turning 25 years old in three weeks and for most of my 25 years I have been, first and foremost, a student. Between high school, college, and seminary I have spent an unquantifiable amount of hours in the classroom or with my nose in a book. Suddenly, in August, I was thrown out of the classroom and into a “contextual learning site” for my internship. This is the great upheaval. I am no longer learning about theoretical churches, with theoretical people and their theoretical lives. I am in a real church, with real people and I am now a part of their real lives. It is very exciting for me, but also very frightening. Amazingly, I have found myself having the most fun I have ever had in my entire life. It sounds strange to say, but the first thing that I have learned about the job of a pastor is just how much fun it is! Sure, the work is stressful at times and I often times feel as if I am running from thing to thing and I will never be able to keep up or accomplish it all. However, in the midst of that chaos and that stress I am finding such profound joy and fulfillment. I walk away on Sunday mornings, after preaching or worship, exhausted but elated. I leave late on Wednesday nights after teaching Confirmation (whether or not my lesson got anywhere) tired yet energized. I finish a hospital visit feeling emotionally drained but filled with God’s grace. I know these sound contradictory but somehow I find myself, week after week, overwhelmed yet eager and brimming with excitement for the next project. I have never felt this way about any other form of work. I’ve never raked my lawn and thought, that was difficult but boy I can’t wait to do this again. In essence, the biggest thing I’ve learned in my short period of time here at Mount Calvary is that I am in the right field. I feel very affirmed in my call to be a pastor. Even in my short period of time here as intern pastor, I have learned too many things to put them all into words. One thing that sticks out and that makes Mount Calvary unique and beautiful are the people. Not all churches look like this or act this way. Not all churches gather weekly for a meal together. Not all churches welcome everyone to the table on Sundays. Not all churches have this strong feeling of family among its many members. Many churches I have been to have felt much more sterile and uninviting. This place can be loud and messy but families are loud and messy and that’s what makes this place different. This is a family. I have felt very welcomed and very loved here and I know, from speaking to my fellow interns, that this is not always the case. The church is just an empty building without the people who inhabit it and another important lesson I’ve learned is that a pastor must get to know the people, learn their stories and create genuine relationships in order for trust and community to form. This has been an important lesson thus far. I have a lot to learn here and I am thankful that you all have made me feel so welcomed and so (Continued on page 2)

A Lifelong Learner

I am in the midst of a great upheaval in my life. I am turning 25 years old in three weeks and for most of my 25 years I have been, first and foremost, a

student. Between high school, college, and seminary I have spent an unquantifiable amount of hours in the classroom or with my nose in a book. supported through this journey. I know that making mistakes is a part of the learning process so I hope you will be patient when I stumble from time to time. This internship year will be a learning opportunity, but in all honestly, this is just the first learning opportunity in a long lifetime of learning. With God’s help, I hope that I can keep learning until my last day. I hope to never lose the spark of curiosity and I hope I can spark some of that in you along the way. Learning should be a lifelong process, so with that in mind, I hope that perhaps I can help you learn a thing or two as well. This give-and-take is why we need the church. This should be a place where we can enter into conversation together and learn things from each other. We have all been blessed with the spark of God’s love in order that we may share it with our neighbor and it would be a mistake to hide it. With that in mind, I hope to continue along this journey with you and that we can all pick up a little wisdom along the way. Yours in Christ, Intern Matt Schroeder [email protected]

Rank, Stoplist, Great, Swell, Electric Action, Principals??

T here are so many words to describe parts of a pipe organ! I realized one day that I was getting some of the same looks I give people who work in finance. This month I

will explain one term; RANK, as pertaining to the organ, not an unpleasant odor! There are 61 keys on the keyboard of an organ compared to 88 on the piano. For each key or note, there is one pipe. The lowest note will have the biggest pipe and the higher you go, the smaller the pipe. From the biggest pipe to the smallest pipe is one rank. If you had just one rank of pipes you would only have one type of sound. The uniqueness of an organ is the multitude of sounds you can get by one person playing one note. Most organs will have pipes that vary by shape or material. Instead of having one sound you need to have more “ranks” of pipes. Some of these pipes will be made of wood or metal. They may be open at the top, conical shaped or covered at the top. Our Rieger organ had 12 “ranks” of pipes which meant there were 12 different sounds. Our new Nordlie organ has 29 ranks. As you add ranks, it does not necessarily mean the organ will get louder, it just means you will have more variety. Come up to the organ sometime, if you are interested, and I can show you what the different ranks sound like! Our organ dedication will be Saturday, February 27 at 3:00 p.m. Much more information about this day will be coming!

All Saints Sunday, November 1

On this day we remember our loved ones by lighting candles in worship as a way to honor the saints in our lives who have already left this world. It is a special time to hold in our thoughts and prayers the many loved ones we miss. We grieve for our beloved but also come to hear the promise that God wipes away our tears.

HymnTap at the Dubliner Pub

Monday, November 2

Pastor Rome invites you to Hymntap at the Dubliner Pub in St. Paul at University and Cretin on Monday, November 2, 6-8 p.m. Pastor Rome plays a humble accordion with the bluegrass band from the ELCA mission start congregation Lydia’s Place. Sing hymns, have a beverage, and enjoy community. Just FYI, though the event is not made especially for kids or youth, she has brought her kids to this before and bought them a pop and popcorn - the environment seems just fine for them.

Tanzania Update

W e're excited to report that the Kevin Codner family will be traveling to Tanzania next summer! In Tanzania they will have the opportunity to

connect directly with people from the other side of the globe, see firsthand how our efforts here at Mount Calvary impact their lives and experience the authentic

Tanzanian way of life (you're not just a tourist, you're a welcomed guest!). If anyone is interested in joining this once in a lifetime trip, please contact Kevin or Christine ASAP. Our relationship with the congregation in Ipelamwa, Tanzania continues to stay strong. We are currently sponsoring 11 secondary school students and plan to continue with this program. Our relationship with the Iringa Hope microfinance program also continues to grow. The congregation in Ipelamwa has a demand for about 120-150 loans for individual families, based on the size of the congregation. There are currently 74 members from Ipelamwa that have registered for the program and over 17 families have already received loans.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE

November 15 - 29

O ne of the ways Mount Calvary chooses to serve our neighbors is by purchasing gifts, household items, and gift cards to bring joy and happiness to people who might not

otherwise receive any gifts. This year we have again partnered with the Holiday Gift Shop and The Link.

Since 2010, a coalition of Dakota County churches, businesses, and other partners has provided a place for clients of The Open Door to come and "shop" for a gift for themselves and each of their family members. The Holiday Gift Shop is held at Easter by the Lake in December, and volunteer opportunities are available, such as sorting gifts and greeting families. Contact Amy Commers to get more information about volunteering. The Link has been providing support to at-risk youth for more than 20 years in the Twin Cities area. In April 2010, they opened Lincoln Place, a program which offers housing and support services for homeless and/or disabled at-risk young adults from ages 18-24 to increase self-sufficiency and decrease the risk of future homelessness. Lincoln Place is located on the corner of Cedar Grove Parkway and Gold Trail, just down the hill from Mount Calvary. Choose an ornament (or two or three!) from the Giving Tree and shop for the item listed. Bring gifts to church by December 6 and place them under the Giving Tree. Please attach ornaments to your unwrapped gifts so we can deliver them to the appropriate recipients.

If you have any questions about the Giving Tree, please contact Amy Commers.

August Council Minutes

Council approved via email a request from Jane Mollman to allow the 6th graders to sponsor a food drive for The Open Door on October 11th. In addition to asking members to donate, they will also be venturing out into the community to ask neighbors (via a flyer) to leave food outside their front doors on October 11th for them to collect.

Council discussed upcoming opportunities traditionally handled by the Reaching

Out ministry team. Action Item—Butch Raymond moved to continue the Giving Tree, Brenda Teats seconded, and

the motion was passed by Council. It was determined that Amy Commers would work with Sarah Glad, Lisa Johnson, and Erica White to coordinate the project. Dan Sjolseth and Butch Raymond will assist in moving and delivering items to the appropriate ministries.

Action Item— Butch Raymond moved to continue the Mitten Tree following the Giving Tree, Dave

Jaede seconded, and the motion was passed by Council. Penny Johnson will continue to coordinate the Mitten Tree as in past years.

Finance Update— Dave Jaede commented that the Finance committee will begin work on long-term financing plans for the remainder of the organ loan balance.

Staff update -

Pastor Rome shared that the September offering during Worship Young will be for school supplies that Rahn Elementary is lacking, and in October they will be trick-or-treating at Keystone.

Open Forum— Council discussed chapter 12 from the book Let’s Kill Sunday School (Before it Kills the Church) on Faith Webs, building intentional Cross+Gen relationships among members.

September Council Minutes

Prior to the meeting, Council approved via email the hiring of G. Gardner Concrete and Waterproofing to install a drain tile system with a sump pump and basket to address the water issue in rooms B1-B3.

Also prior to the meeting, Council approved via email the request for a handbell fundraising event at the Eagan Applebee’s to raise money for travel to Sioux Falls for the Handbell Musicians of America festival in June 2016.

Staff update—

Pastor Tom shared his experience helping a homeless couple navigate county services. It is clear that the Eagan community has a severe lack of temporary shelter and immediate assistance; He is hopeful that ongoing discussions among church leaders will result in active progress to address the needs of homeless people in our midst.

Finance Update— Dave Jaede discussed the plan the finance committee felt would best suit our

repayment plan for the next two years as it keeps organ finances out of the operating budget. Action Item— Butch Raymond moved to approve a $240,000 loan to cover the balance owed

Nordlie. The motion was seconded by Erica White and passed by Council. Open Discussion— Council members discussed their current understanding of the changing role of

the Council and leadership.

Take a Book • Return a Book

T he Open Door is now home to a second Little Free Library. The first one is located at the community garden just north of our church parking lot. These “Little

Libraries” started in 2009 with a mission to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide. They are about connecting with your neighbors and community; they are “mini-town squares” where people can meet over a good book and get to know each other. You may take a book or return a book to share with others. There are no rules, no late fees and everyone can take part!

The Eagan Rotary Club and Graham Construction Company, based out of Eagan, have joined forces to purchase materials and build 34 of these units to be disbursed throughout the City of Eagan. Each library is registered and has an owner that checks the library on a regular basis to make sure the books are appropriate and are in good shape. Books are changed on a regular basis. Everyone in the community is encouraged to participate. If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Wester at [email protected] or call her at 651.605.2881. Happy reading!!

It is our task to figure out how to bring our lives into harmony, how to ripen and flourish in God's time, how to play our music at the right speed. (Gather November 2015, p. 32 & 27) All are welcome to join us in this discussion. Contact Marianne Adelmann for information.

Mount Calvary Writers’ Group

T he Mount Calvary Writers' Group invites you to join us if you are interested in any kind of writing whatsoever, whether or not you have experience. The mix of

interests and experience is part of what makes our discussions of each other's writings (and occasionally famous people's writings) so interesting and helpful. Members have submitted for discussion all kinds of writing, including memories (ours or others') preserved in writing, poetry, short stories, personal essays, haikus, science fiction, parts of novels, op-ed commentaries—you name it. And we each wrote a 6-word autobiography as an exercise in introspection and judicious word selection—and a fun means of getting to know each other. We meet the first and third Mondays of the month at 7:00 pm in the adult retreat room downstairs. We'd love to have you join us. For more info, please contact Rich Cowles.

CARING FOR THE CAREGIVER

Tuesday, November 17

6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Are you a caregiver?

A caregiver is anyone who provides help to another person in need.

Caregivers are family members, friends, neighbors and others who help: aging spouses, older adult family members or friends, people with disabilities, children with special needs, anyone, any age that needs assistance with their daily needs. A caregiver may help prepare meals, pay bills, do personal care, manage medications, shop, clean, assist with, or make, major life decisions, and care for someone else in numerous other ways.

Caregiving has many rewards, but also shifting roles and emotions. You might feel troubled or frustrated. You may also feel alone or angry because others don’t understand. These feelings are natural, and common.

Your situation is unique. But you are not alone.

Each caregiving experience is unique. You will have changing needs, feelings, trials and rewards. Your experience will also change over time. Yet, one thing is for sure. All caregivers will need to find balance.

With balance in your life, you will be better able to keep providing care.

Caring for the Caregiver.

Learn why identifying as a caregiver is important and how caregiving can impact your health.

We share some caregiver resources. Brought to Mount Calvary by your Stephen's Ministry team, presented by the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging. Questions? Contact Wendy Lane at [email protected] or 651-454-2344 (ext 14).

W: What are your dreams for the coming months and years of life together at Mount Calvary?

E: As a new Church Council member, I'm excited to see how we help lead in developing as a congregation out in the world. I'm not sure what that looks like, but it will be fun to find out. I'm hoping my creative nature will be put to good use in this new role.

This month we will get to know a little bit more about one of our Mount Calvary Council members….Erica White W: (Wendy) How long have you

been attending here at Mount Calvary?

E: (Erica) Nine years W: Where were you born? E: Pekin, Illinois. W: Use only three words and

describe yourself. E: I am funny, extroverted and

creative. W: What are you looking forward

to in the next year? E: In the next year, I am looking

forward to spending time with the 6th graders in F3 , making some much needed home improvements, and going to Yosemite with a group of Boy Scouts and their families.

W: Are there any groups or

activities that you are involved in outside of church?

E: I am very involved in Boy Scouts and volunteering at my younger two children's school. My high school child is not so much a fan of me hanging around his school!

W: What are your favorite

hobbies? or things to do in your free time?

E: My most passionate hobby is scrapbooking. I started 20 years ago, before scrapbooking was cool. I also have a home based business where I help people create custom jewelry that shows those things they cherish

most in life. It is really special to be a part of helping someone tell their story.

W: What is something most

people don’t know about you?

E: Many people may not know that I am a pediatric oncology nurse with a degree in Religious Studies. It's a long story!

W: What’s your favorite part of

worship? E: My favorite parts of worship

are the sermon and the bell choirs.

W: What have you valued most

about being part of the community at Mount Calvary?

E: To me, being a part of Mount Calvary means feeling at home, where people notice when you aren't there, not because they judge but because they care. What I value most about our church is how content my children are to be there. When you have a teenager who WANTS to be at church every Wednesday night, you know something's working the way it should to shape young members lives!
