A Message from the President of The International Society for Artificial Organs
Artificial Organs27(4):287–383, Blackwell Publishing, Inc.© 2003 International Society for Artificial Organs
Wonderful changes are in store for The InternationalSociety for Artificial Organs (ISAO), beginning withthe Joint Congress this June with the AmericanSociety for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) inWashington, DC. For the past year, the Board ofTrustees and the Executive Committee of ISAO havebeen working hard to implement the changes andimprovements which were outlined by the ISAOTask Force in 1998. The Task Force recommendedenhancing international collaboration and communi-cation in artificial organs by consolidating our effortswith the three major artificial organs societies: TheEuropean Society for Artificial Organs (ESAO), TheJapanese Society for Artificial Organs (JSAO), andASAIO. To meet this goal, ISAO will return to theoriginal format of bi-annual meetings, held in con-junction with these three major societies. This formatwas very successful in the past and we expect it willcontinue to be in the future. Toward this goal, ISAOmet with JSAO in 2001, as a sequential meeting. InJune 2003, ISAO will meet with ASAIO as a fullyintegrated Joint Congress. In 2005, the internationalmeeting will be an expanded international meeting
of ESAO, and in 2007 the meeting will be anexpanded meeting of JSAO. A return to this formatallows us to bring full international participation toeach of these continental meetings, maximizing thescientific communication and collaboration in a veryefficient manner.
The program for the Washington, DC, Joint Con-gress in June is spectacular. Panels, scientific presen-tations, workshops, and every aspect of the meetingare designed to emphasize worldwide participationin artificial organ research and practice. Theseabstracts represent the entire world experience inartificial organ research. This promises to be anabsolutely top quality meeting. All the members ofISAO, all of those interested in artificial organresearch, and all the readers of Artificial Organs areenthusiastically encouraged to attend.
