Dear Cape Families,
We wish all of our Cape families a happy holiday and new year filled with hope and
promise. We hope everyone will take time to relax and enjoy each other over winter
break.
Exciting times are ahead for our Cape students in 2018! We will be ready to make 2018 a
year filled with success through hard work and dedication by providing students with daily
opportunities to learn and grow. We shoulder the hard work together – administrators,
teachers, staff, students and families. Thanks for partnering with us in this venture!
January is a busy month for our school. Take a look at the school calendar in this
newsletter, in the back of your child’s planner, or on our website. Students return to school
on Monday, January 8. We especially look forward to seeing you at our Student-Led
Conferences on Thursday, January 18. We also have a Movie Night at the end of the
month!
We are already planning for the 2018-2019 school year. We will have a Kindergarten Open
House on Tuesday, January 16 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in our library. We will also have school
tours in January and February. Please invite your neighbors and friends to these activities.
We want to share with our community all the great things we do at Cape each day.
Our intensive classes are always in need of snacks and school supplies for their students.
We appreciate any donation for these students. Please drop off at the office anytime.
Cape is a special place. We are thankful for our students, staff and parents. Please call us
or stop by if you have any question or concerns. We are happy to assist in any way we
can.
Sincerely,
Nicole Osterholm and Kristi Sund

The district-wide character word for January is Commitment. This involves binding yourself to a course of action despite
obstacles. The district’s quote for the month is, “Commitment
is what transfers a promise into reality.”
Please take time during the break to relax and re-energize
yourself for the second half of the school year. How often do
you sit down and look at how your time is being spent? Time is
a valuable commodity, and as we look at the character word
for the month, it is worthwhile to ask yourself, “Do I make
promises and keep them?”
Many people make resolutions at the beginning of a new year.
It is important to evaluate the previous year and look at areas
where there is room for improvement, but what happens when
we break a resolution and struggle with falling back into old
habits we have resolved to change? Is it okay to give up? This
is where commitment comes in. Commitment is what carries us
through when our resolve begins to fade. Families commit
themselves to many things throughout the school year, and as
the year progresses, sometimes those commitments can feel
like burdens. Often, it becomes necessary to determine which
obligations are worthy of a commitment, and how we handle
these obligations can teach our children a very valuable life
lesson. Determining the level of commitment you are willing to
uphold before making the commitment is a necessary first
step for any venture.
A friend of mine once shared her method of teaching her
children the importance of commitment by explaining that one
of her daughters was notorious for saying she was interested
in a new activity, then when the activity became a challenge,
she would tell her mother she wanted to quit. My friend
learned very early that she needed to attach a time frame to
any activity her daughter tried. Not wanting to discourage
her, she would say, “We can try that, but you have to commit
to a whole season if you want me to sign you up.” If there was
whining after the commitment had been made, her daughter
would be reminded of the agreement that had been made prior
to beginning the activity. Both mother and daughter
understood the importance of making a commitment. As we
are presented with opportunities to become involved,
remember to be careful with your time and if you commit to
projects and activities, your children are watching to see if
your promises are binding.

TIPS TO PREVENT LICE
To prevent lice, you’ll need to teach your child
these ways to steer clear of the bugs- and make
sure you explain to them why they aren’t allowed
to share certain items.
Don’t share hats, scarves, helmets, pillows,
combs, brushes or headphones.
Keep long hair up in a ponytail or braid.
Do weekly head checks – check the “hot spots.”
These are the back of the neck, behind
the ears, and part lines.
Wash blankets, stuffed toys and backpacks on a
routine basis.
Wishing Everyone a Healthy, Happy New Year!
From Our School Nurse
We appreciate all of our wonderful
business partners who do so much
for Cape Elementary everyday.
During this holiday season we want
to give a special THANK YOU to
Cape Coral First United Methodist
Church for taking such great care
of our less fortunate Cape families.
Special Thank You!
Out Of Field Teachers

English as a Second Language to their current
certificate:
