A DISEASE.A GIFT.

A LIFE CHANGED.

ANY PEOPLE TALK about how a doctor or a treatment changed their life. My story is a little different. It’s about how a disease

changed my life. At 27, I was diagnosed with a rare liver disease. And five short years later, as I became sicker and sicker, I was told that I needed a transplant. My UW Physicians at UW Medical Center helped my husband and me through that difficult process, keeping us informed and empowered at every step. When the big day arrived, the surgery went perfectly. And when I opened my eyes, my world changed. Because of another’s sacrifice, I was alive and, for the first time, getting better. The gratitude I felt was inexpressible. That’s when I was introduced to Team Transplant. I’d never been a runner before my sickness, but through the support of my husband and this amazing group, I have now completed 18 half marathons, and I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been in my life. The disease felt like a curse. Everything I’ve received since has been a gift.

Welcome all in our midst to A Midsummer Night’s DreamA story of magic and mortals who’re not as they seemBalanchine and the Bard bring us this tale of woeAnd laughter and dance, please enjoy our fine show. Love eludes our fraught humans as we open our playAnd Oberon’s eye for his Queen has wandered astrayPrankish Puck tries to fix with the spell from his flowerStealing child and meddling in fair Titania’s bower.

Our Queen finds true love in a most unlikely of placeWhen the weaver, Nick Bottom, finds himself with new faceGrand Hippolyta dances through swordfight and fogPursued by Theseus and Puck and high flying dog.

But all’s well that ends well in our tale of warm magicAfter all, this is comedy and the ending’s not tragicOur choreographer rewards us with weddings of blissRightful loves are restored and there’s nothing amiss.

And what could be better than a small corps de balletDanced by children from our School, what talent you’ll say!Myriad charms upon charms will surely be foundAnd before the last curtain, sweet fireflies abound.

We thank you for joining our performance tonightAnd hope we rewarded with mirth and delightWe too love this ballet and to share it with youMakes this midsummer reverie a dream that’s come true!

6 PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

Welcome to springtime at Pacific Northwest Ballet! We are proud to present to you one of George Balanchine’s

most famous ballets, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Shakespeare’s comedy of magic and love comes to life in this lavish story ballet the moment you hear Mendelssohn’s bewitching score.

We extend our gratitude to the repertory Presenting Sponsor, Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, and Major Sponsor, the Nesholm Family Foundation. In addition, thank you to Regence BlueShield for their sponsorship of Midsummer’s Opening Night Dinner. Finally, we are honored to have the generous support of Season Sponsors ArtsFund and Microsoft, and we thank Dilettante Chocolates for their continued generous contributions of decadent chocolates all year long.

Pacific Northwest Ballet is among the best ballet companies in the world, and nothing makes our extraordinary dancers feel more rewarded than your loyalty to their work. PNB needs your gener-osity more than ever to maintain the greatness that enhances and reflects so well on our community. With the return of Giselle in June 2014, PNB is building new scenery and costumes for the production, designed by French designer Jérôme Kaplan. This exciting project is only possible with the generous support of PNB donors. With a total build cost of $750,000 and nearly $600,000 raised, two donors have challenged PNB friends with matching gifts totaling $100,000 to the Giselle Fund, doubling the effects of each donor’s gift to the fund. This is an incredible opportunity to help bring this production to life. We are so grateful for the generosity of these two donors and for the generosity of the many donors who will step up and meet this challenge. I hope you will join me and many other loyal PNB friends by taking advantage of this chance to double your impact and contribute whatever you can. To donate, visit pnb.org or contact Lilah Helton at 206.441.9594 or [email protected]

The Board of Trustees has a great sense of pride in the progress PNB is making in achieving our strategic goals. The first goal, mentioned earlier, is to create new

scenery and costumes for our production of Giselle. Our second goal is to ensure our operating expenses are fully covered. You, our wonderful patrons, assist us with your attendance at the ballet, whether by renewing your season subscription or being loyal single ticket buyers. Ticket sales account for only 70% of what it costs to do all of the great work you see at PNB. By making a gift today, you will help support the creation and development of world-class dance and help provide educational outreach programs to the community. Simply place your donation in the envelope provided and drop it in the box in the lobby or visit pnb.org or call 206.441.3593.

Thank you for your support and partici-pation. We hope you enjoy our production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Balanchine’s fondness for Shakespeare’s tale of love’s delusions and mishaps dated from boyhood when he had performed as an elf in a St. Petersburg production of the play. As an adult he still remembered many lines (in Russian) and loved to quote them, especially those enchanting ones of Oberon that begin, “I know a bank where the wild thyme blows, /Where oxlips and

the nodding violet grows ...” But Balanchine’s desire to bring this favorite theater piece to the ballet stage waited more than 20 years for fulfillment while he searched for music with which to expand Mendelssohn’s original score to suitable length.

Although Balanchine is famous for his rejection of the evening-long story ballet tradition that dominated the 19th century, he was not, in fact, opposed to story ballets per se, only to their excesses. In Midsummer, which dance writer Anita Finkel has called “possibly the greatest narrative ballet of all time,” he demon-strated brilliantly that the pace of a story ballet can be fleet rather than ponderous, that mime can be delicate and to the point, and that the tale can be told almost entirely through dance.

Perhaps most inspired is Balanchine’s sustained employment of ballet’s central metaphor of love—the pas de deux—to embody the play’s subtle insights into the

many permutations of the love relationship. The cloying embraces of Hermia and Lysander, the distraught pleadings of Helena with Demetrius, the thrashing resistance of Hermia to Demetrius and of Helena to Lysander—all are distortions of the ideal partnership between lovers, traditionally conveyed by the ballerina and her cavalier. This human game of power is also played out in the fairy realm where, tellingly, the disputing spouses Titania and Oberon never dance together but instead perform self-celebratory solos for their admiring retinues. When Titania does condescend to take a partner, it is either the non-descript cavalier, who functions more as prop than peer, or, in the work’s most charming episode, an artless ass. Only in Act II, which is pure dance, do the battles and imbalances, the self-indulgences and self-deceptions give way to a genuine dance partnership. In the magnificent Divertissement pas de deux which crowns the wedding festivities, competition has no place, and restraint, mutuality and trust define the mature ideal of love.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been in Pacific Northwest Ballet’s repertory since 1985. In 1997, with the approval of The George Balanchine Trust, PNB commissioned set and costume designer Martin Pakledinaz to re-design the entire production—a “first” for a Balanchine story ballet. Staged by PNB Founding Artistic Director Francia Russell, with every step, movement and gesture as Balanchine intended, this freshly-designed Midsummer brings the choreographer’s dramatic ideas to life scenically as never before.

ACT I A forest near Athens, one Midsummer eve

The First Act takes place in a forest near the duke’s palace. Oberon, King of the Fairies, and Titania, his queen, quarrel over the Indian child they both want. Oberon orders Puck to bring the flower pierced by Cupid’s arrow (which causes anyone coming under its influence to fall in love with the first person the eyes behold) and, while Titania is asleep and unknowing, he casts the flower’s spell over her.

Meanwhile, Helena, wandering in the woods, meets Demetrius, whom she loves but who does not love her. Demetrius rejects her and goes his way. Oberon watches and tells Puck to use the flower on Demetrius that he may return Helena’s affection.

Another couple, Hermia and Lysander, very much in love, are also wandering in the forest. They become separated. Puck, eager to carry out Oberon’s orders, mistakenly anoints Lysander. Helena appears, and Lysander, under the flower’s spell, at once and to her amazement tells her how much he loves her.

Hermia now returns. She is astonished and then dismayed to see Lysander paying attention only to Helena. Puck manages to bring Demetrius, too, under the flower’s spell, much to the delight of Helena, who doesn’t care for Lysander at all.

Demetrius and Lysander, now both in love with Helena, begin to quarrel over her. Puck, at Oberon’s order, has separated Bottom, a weaver, from his companions and transformed his head into that of an ass and placed him at the sleeping Titania’s feet. Awakening, Titania sees Bottom, thinks him fair, and pays him close and loving attention. At last Oberon, his anger over, has Bottom sent away and releases Titania from her spell.

Hermia now gets no attention, Helena too much. The men, completely at odds, quarrel seriously and begin to fight. Puck, by his magic, causes them to separate, lose one another and wander apart in the forest until, exhausted, they fall asleep, with Puck arranging for Helena to fall asleep beside Demetrius and Lysander (his spell removed) by Hermia.

The Duke and Hippolyta discover the lovers asleep in the forest, awaken them, find their differences resolved and proclaim a triple wedding for themselves and the two couples.

ACT IIAt the court of Theseus

The Second Act opens in the Duke’s palace with parades, dancing, and diver-tissements in honor of the newly married couples. When the celebrations are over and the mortals retire, we return to the demesne of Oberon and Titania, who are now reunited and at peace. And at last, Puck, having put order into disorder, sweeps away the remnants of the night’s doings. The fireflies twinkle in the night and reclaim the forest.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

George BalanchineChoreographer

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, George Balanchine (1904-1983) is regarded as the foremost contem-porary choreographer in the world of ballet. He came to the

United States in late 1933, at the age of 29, accepting the invitation of the young American arts patron Lincoln Kirstein (1907-96), whose great passions included the dream of creating a ballet company in America. At Balanchine’s behest, Kirstein was also prepared to support the formation of an American academy of ballet that would eventually rival the long-established schools of Europe.

This was the School of American Ballet, founded in 1934, the first product of the Balanchine-Kirstein collaboration. Several ballet companies directed by the two were created and dissolved in the years that followed, while Balanchine found other

mentals of the 400-year-old language of academic dance. This had an inestimable influence on the growth of dance in America. Although at first his style seemed particularly suited to the energy and speed of American dancers, especially those he trained, his ballets are now performed by all the major classical ballet companies throughout the world. Francia RussellPNB Founding Artistic Director Stager

Francia Russell was Co-Artistic Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet with Kent Stowell, and Director of PNB School, from 1977 until her retirement in 2005. Born in Los Angeles

and raised and educated in the United States and Europe, she joined the New York City Ballet in 1956. Soon promoted to soloist she was subsequently appointed ballet master and teacher for the company by George Balanchine. In the mid-60s he began sending her abroad to stage his ballets which she continues to do, having now staged over 140 productions of his works worldwide, including the first Balanchine ballets to be performed in China, by the Shanghai Ballet, and in Russia by the Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg.

From 1975 to 1977 Ms. Russell and Mr. Stowell were Co-Artistic Directors of the Frankfurt Ballet, moving then to Seattle to lead Pacific Northwest Ballet. Over the following 28 years, and together with an extraordinarily gifted and dedicated team of artists, staff, and volunteers, they built PNB from a fledgling offshoot of the Seattle Opera to a company and school of national and international prominence.

Ms. Russell has received countless awards and honors, including the Washington State Governor’s Arts Award, the Arts Fund Lifetime Achievement Award, the Dance Magazine Award, the Brava Award from the Women’s University Club, an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Seattle University, and an Honorary Doctor of Arts from the University of Washington.

Balanchine’s more than 400 dance works include Serenade (1934), Concerto Barocco (1941), Le Palais de Cristal, later renamed Symphony in C (1947), Orpheus (1948), The Nutcracker (1954), Agon (1957), Symphony in Three Movements (1972), Stravinsky Violin Concerto (1972), Vienna Waltzes (1977), Ballo della Regina (1978), and Mozartiana (1981). His final ballet, a new version of Stravinsky’s Variations for Orchestra, was created in 1982.

He also choreographed for films, operas, revues, and musicals. Among his best-known dances for the stage is Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, originally created for Broadway’s On Your Toes (1936). The musical was later made into a movie.

A major artistic figure of the twentieth century, Balanchine revolutionized the look of classical ballet. Taking classicism as his base, he heightened, quickened, expanded, streamlined, and even inverted the funda-

Meet Révérence Society members Arnie & Judy Ness. As longtime subscribers of PNB, Judy and Arnie share a few words about their decision to support PNB with a bequest in their will:

What inspired you to make this special gift?Life has been good to us. We both have had satisfying careers and are now enjoying retirement. When we are no longer in our favorite seats, we want to be able to keep giving to PNB. The Révérence Society makes that possible. To us, it is an honor to be a member of this group and know the powerful impact it has in providing financial support to this incredible organization.

Why did you choose to make a bequest, and how was your experience arranging it?We would like to do what will be of the most benefit to PNB. We met with a lawyer and with PNB to discuss what to do. It was a pleasant and efficient experience.

How did you handle any family considerations? Our children are happy that we get so much joy from PNB. They are informed about, and totally in favor of, our decision to name PNB and ACT Theatre as the main beneficiaries upon our final curtain call.

The Révérence Society was established to honor those who remember Pacific Northwest Ballet in their long-range financial and estate plans. To learn more about how you can leave a meaningful legacy gift for PNB, please contact Lindsay Krause, Major Gifts and Planned Giving Officer, at 206.441.3599, or [email protected].

PNB’s New Works Initiative provides a flexible environment to create new works, develop dancers through performances, and fashion a repertory both firmly rooted in tradition and committed to the evolution of the artistic medium. New works contribute to the advancement of the art form, while presenting PNB’s audiences with a wide range of dance to bolster a strong appreciation of the versatility of ballet and a true understanding of various choreographers’ bodies of work. PNB would like to thank the following individuals and organizations that have supported the New Works Initiative with a gift of $500 or more over the past year.
