FOR LOVE AND MUSIC PRESENTS | JUNE IN A PARALLEL UNIVERSE

DIRECTOR’S NOTE:

You are about to see the story of June, a person who

is plagued by the intrusive thoughts in her head. These

thoughts work tirelessly to convince creative, brilliant,

beloved June that she has no value.

I I was drawn to this show—aside from my undying love

for Amelia Kirshon, aside from the show’s innovative

and beautiful music, and aside from an urgent desire to

create theatre again after a pandemic—because I have

been June. But I’m not the only one. Over the course

of rehearsals, it became clear that my collaborators have also been June. Ah, a starting

place. A shared mirror to hold up to ourselves. When have you, too, been June?

From the distance of our seats, we witness June with compassion. “These voices are

irrational, they are cruel, they are untrue!” we want to tell her. Hold up the mirror: I am

June, too. Can my compassion be radical enough to extend it to myself, through June?

If we can love June through her mistakes, can we choose to love ourselves through ours,

allowing ourselves the space to learn and be better as we move forward? When have you

been Act Two June, a person who finds a way through the noise of self-doubt to believe

in their value and live their authentic life with courage? June does it by acknowledging

the way that the thoughts are trying to keep her safe, and ultimately moving past them.

How have you done it?

A note on imagination and collaboration: in “Bathroom Nine and Three Quarters,”

Winter shows us the beautiful world that they imagine could exist. The moment is

fleeting, not because Winter isn’t imagining with their full convictive heart, but because

they are imagining alone, outside the power of community. It is collaboration that is the

key to imagination in action, our gifts to the world. This show did not stay in Amelia’s

“Notes” app on her phone. May you have the hopefulness to imagine a better world,

and may you have the bravery to share and collaborate with other imagining hands.

I am so happy that you are here to make history by being June in a Parallel Universe’s

first audience.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

June in a Parallel Universe started off as an idea for a novel that I wrote on the notes

app of my phone, and that is what it remained until my freshman year creative writing

class. It became a short story about a girl who wanted to go on a date with her

dream boy in the perfect red dress, and all the things she wished she said. During

this time, I was randomly taking violin lessons, and I told my violin teacher about

the short story, and he said “That sounds like a good plot for a musical,” and I said:

“Yeah, actually, that’s a really good idea,” and thus is the origin story of June in a

Parallel Universe.

I wrote this musical with the intent of it existing completely in the mind of June.

At the beginning of the story, we see her with her journal open, scribbling down

her thoughts. Once she looks up at the audience, from then on, she is telling us a

story, or her version of the story, and letting us into her mind. I wanted the story

to exist through her eyes because I wanted you to see these characters and this

world through June’s lens of insecurity. When you love someone who is hurting

in a different way than you, it is sometimes difficult to sympathize with their hurt,

because a lot of that pain is not always on the surface. It is easy to get caught up in

the frustration of not being able to fix it: to make them feel whole, but the beauty of

the human experience is learning that your job on this earth is not to fix people, it’s

to be there for them, with the banana, with the poetry, with anything you can muster

without compromising yourself in the process. This is how we heal together.

I hope you fall in love with these characters like I did, and maybe see a

bit of yourself in them.

Thank you for supporting our production,

Amelia Kirshon

Aidan McElman (Asst. Director): Aidan is a Norton High School 2021

graduate. He loves to collect vinyl and

other assorted nerdy things. Aidan is an

aspiring filmmaker, which is why he is so

excited to make his Assistant Directorial

debut alongside the amazing Ashley

Goverman. Aidan likes to eat Swedish

fish. He would also like to thank “Momma

K” for her organization and dedication

towards this production, Ashley

Goverman for her amazing guidance

and for being a terrific creative lead, the

amazing cast and crew for their initiative

and spirit, and Amelia Kirshon for

allowing me to be a part of this amazing

journey.

Amber Richard (Math Teacher, Ensemble): Amber has always had a

love for theater and for performing any

production possible on stage with her

closest friends. Whether it’s playing the

right-hand man to a prince in “The Little

Mermaid Jr.,” almost playing a very

accusatory mother in “Freaky Friday,”

standing still and reading ominous

monologues on stage in “What I Want

To Say But Never Will,” and somehow

playing someone’s wife in nearly every

show they’ve been in together, theater

never fails to create lifelong memories.

In the fall, Amber will be attending the

University of California Irvine, where she

has absolutely no idea what she will be

majoring in, but is very excited to minor

in music. Although Amber is so sad

to be leaving her friends soon, she is

unbelievably grateful to Amelia, Ashley,

Aidan, Momma K, and everyone involved

in this broadway-bound production for

giving her and her friends a final hurrah

on stage together.

Amelia Kirshon (June): Amelia is a rising

freshman at the University of the Arts in

Philly, where she will be surrounded by

many like-minded nerds and never do

math again. She actually cannot believe

that this is happening, and is so thankful

for the time, creativity, and heart that

her friends put into making this dream a

reality. In a parallel universe, outside of

her love of musical theatre, Amelia loves

to compose music, write poems, play

instruments, and perfect her sandwich

artistry (go to Norton Subway and she will

make you that footlong steak and cheese

you are dreaming of). She would like to

thank Ashley Goverman for teaching her

how to be a powerful-but-kind leader,

and for being her dream-director, as

well as Aidan McElman, for being a

genius and always one step ahead. She

would also like to thank Momma K, for

always having the answers (and if not

reminding us to put a pin in it), Jason Kull

for his tech wizardry, Mel Fine for their

kind heart and lyrical brilliance, Maddie

London for gorgeous choreography,

and the cast, and everyone who has ever

written a line of melody or dialogue or

even listened to her babble on about this

musical for the past 4 years. You are all a

part of this, and she wants you to know

that.

Ann-Marie Alves Kirshon (producer): Ann-Marie is a cantankerous feminist

and mother of two, who writes poems,

loves to cook, and helps run the family

flooring business. She started producing

shows when she fell in love with the space

performers make for each other, how it

is imbued with kindness, acceptance,

and goofiness, and for all those little

magical moments on stage from show

to show where something unexpected

and beautiful happens. She is so grateful

for the community that rose up to make

JiaPU possible, for her beautiful mom

& sister who have supported her all her

life, for having daughters who are bona

fide amazing humans that fill her home

with love and music, and for her husband

Larry, who invented For Love & Music.

From the moment he walked her onto

Rob’s dairy farm in Lanesboro, MA, he

showed her that together they could do

big, joyful things.

Anthony D’Amore (Earl, Ensemble): Anthony is entering his freshman year at

Norton High School. This is his thirteenth

musical theater production. It has been

one of the most fun and enjoyable shows

he has been a part of. He is in awe of

the super-talented cast and crew. The

creative team is amazing. He would like

to thank all cast and crew for making

this an awesome experience. In addition

to acting/singing, Anthony enjoys

basketball, soccer, and Cross Fit.

Ashley Goverman (Director): Ashley

is a director, actor, and educator who

graduated from Emerson College in

2016 with a degree in Theatre Education:

Acting. Her recent directing credits have

bounced from New York City public

schools, to southeastern Massachusetts

(Uncommon Theatre’s 2018 Little

Shop of Horrors), to McMurdo Station,

Antarctica—a place she’ll return this

October. Thanks beyond thanks to all the

A’s (WE DID IT!), to incredible Jason &

the brilliant, generous cast, to Marcia, to

Mom & Dad, to Isa.

Caroline Blakeley (Pianist and Ensemble): Caroline Blakeley is an

incoming sophomore at Berklee College

of Music, where she is studying Music

Therapy. This is the first musical she’s

ever been in, and she is very excited and

grateful to be a part of something so

incredible, with such wonderful people.

When she’s not tickling the ivories in

our parallel universe, she is working as a

classroom assistant at the JCS Extended

School Year Program, and (ethically)

speeding to chipotle after rehearsal in

hopes of snagging some tacos before

they close. She would like to thank Layla

(the Kirshon family dog) for always being

there, even at the most inconvenient

of times.

Carrie Sullivan (Mom): Carrie is a

sophomore at the University of Rhode

Island, where she is studying Music

Therapy. She has been a performer

since age 6, most recently as Vivienne in

Legally Blonde and Sister Mary Patrick in

Sister Act. She sends love and gratitude

to her family, particularly her very own

Supermom, for always supporting her.

Daniel Curran (Adam): Danny Curran

Is an actor, writer, musician, and student

at Dean College. His specialties include

corny jokes, writing amazing bios, etc.

He can’t wait to be performing in a

musical for the first time since 2019.

Especially with such a caring, hilarious,

tight knit cast of crazy talented folks! He

gives special thanks to his parents for

being patient with him, and to Ashley

for putting up with his energy, and for

making theatrical magic with this little

group of weirdos. Much love.

PAGE | 12FOR LOVE AND MUSIC PRESENTS

Esmé Brennan (Parallel Universe June): Esmé is a rising freshman at Salve Regina

University and cannot wait to delve into

the world of chemistry and other scientific

nerd stuff. Esmé has been in a few other

productions, her favorite being the show lost

to Covid-19 (RIP Freaky Friday and Ellie Blake

you will be missed). You can find Esmé most

days being the world’s best barista down

in Foxboro Forbes Crossing Starbucks, and

when she’s not there, she’s at home taking

a nap. She cannot thank her family and

friends enough for supporting her through

this production and cannot wait for you all to

finally see this masterpiece of a show. Enjoy!

Jason Kull (Tech): Jason is an upcoming

freshman at the University of New Haven,

where he will be surrounded by many like-

minded individuals as he continues to study

video editing and production. He is excited to

see the results of everyone’s hard work on this

show and is so thankful for the time, creativity,

and passion of those who volunteered to be

a part of this unique experience. He would

like to wish them all the best of luck in their

future theatrical endeavors and would not

miss an opportunity to work beside any of

them again.

Jeffrey Kohlman (Uncle Mur, Ensemble): Besides taking drama class junior year of

high school, Jeff has been doing drama for

an outstanding 3 weeks this summer. In the

original show of June in a Parallel Universe he

will be playing the part of Uncle Mur. Assistant

director Aidan Mcelman has famously said,

“(Marlon) Brando couldn’t have taken it to

this level,” (in reference to Jeff elevating the

role of Uncle Mur).

Enjoy the show!

Laila Meier (Margo): Laila has been doing

musical theatre for 6 years. Her favorite roles

include Flounder from the Little Mermaid

Jr., Lilly St. Regis from Annie Jr., Reno

Sweeney from Anything Goes, and Rona Lisa

Peretti from 25th Annual Putnam County

Spellingbee. Laila will be attending The

American Musical and Dramatic Academy

in the fall for Performing Arts. She would

like to recognize the directors, Amelia, and

the amazing cast and crew for their work in

making this show possible. Also mentioning

her parents for always supporting her love

for theatre and coming to see all her shows.

Madison London (Aunt Jessie, Ensemble, Choreographer): Madison is an incoming

freshman at Pace University. She will be

studying Peace and Justice on a Pre Law

track. Madison has always had a passion for

the preforming arts since she stepped on

a stage in the first grade. June in a Parallel

Universe actually marks her 65th show!

She has had such a pleasure working on

this show and is so excited for everyone

to experience the joy she feels at every

rehearsal!

Mikah Connolly (Mr. Miller, Ensemble): Mikah is a sophomore musical theatre major

at Dean College and is so excited to be

involved in June in a Parallel Universe! Past

productions include Gary: A Sequel to Titus

Andronicus, Torch Song Trilogy, and Rent.

He would like to thank the production team for

their hard work and the cast for creating this

parallel universe with him. Enjoy the show!

Minetsa Cotto Ortiz (Science Teacher, Ensemble): Minetsa is a rising freshman

at The Maxwell School of Citizenship and

Public Affairs at Syracuse University where

she will pursue a degree in Political Science

and International Relations. Minetsa has

been a part of the theatre community since

her sophomore year, engaging in a total of 5

productions, (choreographing two of them)

she loves sharing her bubbly persona thru

dance and music. She can be found dancing

around and making jokes with her cast mates.

She would like to thank the amazing June in

the Parallel Universe team and cast.

Nic Paolo (Sam): Nic is a rising Freshman

at Fitchburg State University, and is going

to be studying History with a specialization

in secondary education. They’ve done

theatre for almost 8 years, with their favorite

roles (besides Sam) being Carlos in Legally

Blonde, Jafar in Aladdin, and Willy Wonka.

Nic is extremely grateful for all of the great

memories and friends they’ve made in June

in a Parallel Universe, and for the love and

support they’ve gotten from their family and

friends for making this work of art a reality.

Noah Hirsch (Gabe): Noah is entering

fourth grade at Henri A. Yelle elementary

in Norton. This is his first musical theater

production. Noah would like to thank his

cousin Ashley for inviting him to participate

in this musical, and pushing him outside of

his comfort zone. Noah enjoys soccer,

basketball, yoga and swim.

WHO’S WHO

Rosie Conklin (Winter): Rosie is a rising

freshman at Roanoke college in Virginia,

and is so excited to be playing Winter in

this production! Their first interaction with

the role made them immediately fall in

love with the character. As they helped to

further develop and explore the comfort

Winter brought to them, they realized

Winter could help other gender non-

conforming individuals realize they aren’t

alone, and can find themselves in Winter’s

story. The role of Winter has shaped their

life and given them a way to learn and grow

on their journey of recently coming out as

non-binary. They hope everyone is able to

take what they need from their story and

can find their own rainbow painted stalls.

They would like to thank everyone who has

helped them on their journey, and Amelia

Kirshon for writing their dream role.

Sofia “Pickle” Kirshon (Bassist): Pickle

Kirshon is a rising sophomore at Norton

High School, where she enjoys hitting

things in percussion and being unable

to read sheet music in jazz band with Mr.

Dejoy, the only acceptable Pisces man.

Pickle enjoys being a sandwich artist with

her sister Mop, crystals/witchy things,

and any form of caffeine she can get her

hands on. She would like to thank Amelia

for letting her “F” up the bass lines she

wrote, Momma K for birthing her, Rosie

for constantly letting her do their hair, and

everyone else in the cast for being swag.

Net proceeds of this show will benefit the Greater Boston Food Bank, which aims to end hunger across Eastern Massachusetts by providing our neighbors in need the healthy food they need to thrive.

Over this summer - one of the toughest times for food

insecure people - Mathworks will be matching every

donation to GBFB dollar for dollar. We anticipate this

show will provide 6,000 meals to people in our area.

Non-perishable food and personal care items are being

collected for the Norton Cupboard of Kindness, a non-

profit food pantry in Norton that provides food relief for

our community. They distribute food the first and third

Mondays of the month, from 4:30-6:30 PM.
