At the start of a new year, it’s always good to reflect on the year gone by, and at St Ann’s we certainly have a lot to reflect on, and celebrate, from the past 12 months.

Despite the rollercoaster of political and economic uncertainty, people and communities from right across Greater Manchester have still given their time and money to support us

and help us to provide care to thousands of local patients. That’s the kind of spirit that makes Mancunians, Salfordians and everyone across Greater Manchester so special. I’m lucky to be able to meet and get to know so many amazing people from so many different walks of life.

I want to say thank you to everyone, from the thousands of you who took part in our Manchester Midnight Walk, to those kind enough to have remembered us in their Will. Perhaps you have taken part in a sporting event to raise money, or you are a volunteer who has gone the extra mile to help our patients. Thank you most sincerely.

We can only offer our unique and amazing service to our communities thanks to your support, and I’m pleased to say 2016 was another great year.

As we approach our 50th birthday in a few years, we can look back and see how hospice care has changed. Hospices may support more people than ever, in more places, and in more ways, but the core purpose of ensuring our patients from across Greater Manchester have the best possible care at what, for many, is one of the most vulnerable times in their life, remains unchanged.

Best wishes for the coming year.

Our Manchester Midnight Walk is back for 2017! This 10km sponsored walk is a really fun way to support St Ann’s. It’s our biggest fundraising event of the year, and we need your help to make sure we raise more money than ever! The party starts at Manchester Central on Friday 23rd June, from 9pm. There’ll be a whole host of entertainment and fun and a warm up to get you limbered up ready to take to the streets of Manchester at midnight, St Ann’s style! Fancy dress is welcomed, although we will provide every walker with one of our iconic yellow t-shirts which you can decorate and personalise before the main event.

The walk also includes a Memory Garden, where you can take some time to reflect and leave a message in memory of a loved one. When you finish the walk, you’ll collect your medal to celebrate your achievement.

Register before 31st March to get our Early Bird discount! £15 per adult (will be £20 after this date) or for groups of 5 or more it’s £12 per adult (will be £15 after 31st March).

To register your place, please visit www.mmwalk.org.uk or call us on 0161 498 3631.

As the new year begins, many of us are keen to take on new challenges, get fit or give something back to help a cause close to our hearts. Why not keep all three resolutions, and do something awesome for St Ann’s?

Why not train to run 5km, 10km, a half marathon or even a marathon? Climb the peaks? Hike Kilimanjaro? Or want to get on your bike and burn some calories? St Ann’s will support you every step (or pedal) of the way…

If a whole marathon in one go isn’t your thing, try the St Ann’s Virtual Marathon by running 26 miles over a month. That’s less than a mile a day, and all for a good cause!

Grab your mates and get messy with the 5km ObstaColour Run at Wythenshawe Park on Sunday 19th March. A Colour Run with obstacles… you’ll start off white and end up bright!

If big, bold and brave is more your thing, try the Gauntlet Games in Heaton Park next September. It’s a 5km or 10km race with Gladiators and a few giant slides, inflatables and foam thrown in for fun!

Or, if you want to come up with your own way to Do Something Awesome, get in touch!

No one knows what the future holds and our circumstances change throughout our lives. There’s always a good reason to make or update your Will but, surprisingly, only a third of adults who die in Britain are covered by one. Will Week is an ideal opportunity for you to make or update your Will, whilst supporting St Ann’s. Around 40 local solicitors are taking part, kindly giving up their time and inviting you to make a donation to St Ann’s instead of paying them their usual fee. This opportunity is only available once a year, so get your appointment booked in now.

It’s really easy to do. Please get in touch with us on 0161 498 2099 or [email protected]. We’ll send you a pack, including a list of participating solicitors near you. Simply make an appointment with your chosen one, complete the donation envelope we’ll also send you, and take it along to your meeting. The solicitors are giving up their time to support us, and they’d like you to give a donation equal to their normal charges for making a Will. This does vary, so here are our suggested donation amounts:

• £90 - Single Will • £135 - Mirror Will • £40 - Updated Will/Codicil

Every donation helps us to continue providing our services, free of charge, to local patients and their loved ones.

6 Steps success! We recently held a celebration event for seven care homes from the Trafford area who have been working with us over the last nine months to complete the 6 Steps Programme. The programme aims to help improve end of life care delivered in care homes, and it’s great that we’ve been able to work with other local healthcare professionals in order to benefit patients in our communities.

Offering a flexible service One of our biggest aims is to ensure we’re able to provide even more support for patients, carers and their loved ones at the time and place that works best for them. If you, or anyone you know, would like any advice or support, you can come along to one of our drop-in services, without an appointment, at either our Heald Green or Little Hulton hospices.

Drop-in service at Heald GreenThis service runs every Monday. A key worker will be available between 9.30am – 3.30pm for patients or carers to drop in for advice and support, to find out what we can offer, and to gain access to our services. For more information, please call us on 0161 498 3612.

Health and Wellbeing Hub at Little HultonThe hub runs every Wednesday between 12pm - 5pm and anyone is welcome to drop in for advice and support. We also run educational sessions about areas including breathlessness, Citizens Advice, exercise, fatigue and some guided relaxation sessions. For more information, please call us on 0161 702 5418.

CQC results The Care Quality Commission is the regulator for all health and social care services in England. One of the ways they ensure that care being provided meets government standards is by carrying out inspections. The five key questions they ask of all services are “are they safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led?” We recently had inspections at all three of our sites, and we’re really pleased to report that we were given a “good” rating for Heald Green and the Neil Cliffe Centre, and “outstanding” for Little Hulton.

The importance of being gentleWe’ve been collaborating with the University of Manchester recently, on a research study looking at gentleness in patient care. Professor David Holman from the university explained: “Gentleness is a form of care-giving about which relatively little is known, but as anyone who has been a patient themselves will understand, being treated gently can be an extremely important and valued part of the care received.“From our research, we know that the level of care provided by St Ann’s is excellent and we were able to observe many instances of staff and volunteers being gentle by caring for patients in an unhurried, warm, friendly and compassionate manner. We’re really interested to learn more about what that means to those being cared for, and we hope that the results will help other organisations apply some of the same techniques, where appropriate.”

Will Week 2017Monday 6th - Friday 10th March

John and Joyce Bradshaw made their Will during Will Week 2016. Here, Joyce tells us about their experience. “We hadn’t made a Will before, even though I’d helped my mum make hers. I’d always said we should make one, but John wasn’t sure we needed to. He thought that as we have two sons, anything we left would be split between them, but I wanted to have everything in order and in writing.

“When we heard about the St Ann’s Will Week and saw that there was a solicitor very local to us taking part, we decided to book an appointment. St Ann’s is important to us as they have cared for several of our friends over the last few years, and this seemed like a good way to support them.

“The solicitor was really lovely, and the process was very easy. We made Mirror Wills, and the paperwork was simple, not daunting at all. Now our Will is written, we have peace of mind, knowing that our wishes will be carried out. Making our Will during Will Week and giving a donation to St Ann’s instead of paying the solicitor means that we’ve also helped the hospice.”

Maggie Inman is a Day Care Staff Nurse at our Heald Green hospice. She says… I’ve been a nurse for 37 years, and my 10 years at St Ann’s has given me the most satisfaction. Our patients are so appreciative of what we do, and small things can make such a big difference to their lives.

One of the best things about working here is the support from co-workers. Being a nurse can be hard, but here I get support from everyone around me, and I know that no matter what team someone is in, they care. Laughter is also very important, and I’m allowed to show my wicked sense of humour!

I love meeting different people, from diverse backgrounds and with individual needs. I often get to see the most unlikely friendships develop – people who would’ve never met before find themselves in a similar situation and form strong bonds with each other. It’s a privilege to meet so many lovely patients and their families, and I know I won’t leave St Ann’s until I retire.

Life, love and laughter – the real St Ann’s

Our expertiseWe’re very proud of our fantastic teams, who are all passionate about providing the best care possible. We often hear stories from patients, or their loved ones, about how much we’ve helped them and made a real difference to their lives. Very often, this is related to the pain they may have been experiencing due to their illness or treatment, which can be traumatic for them and their loved ones. Our team of doctors, nurses and pharmacists work with each patient individually to adjust their medications, and in just a short time they can become pain-free and many are able to return home with a much better quality of life.

Our rehabilitation team works closely with patients to help them in many different ways. Our physiotherapists have enabled patients to achieve real results in terms of their movement and mobility, which can really benefit them in their daily lives. If an illness or medication is affecting a patient’s mouth or appetite, our dietitian can help ensure that they’re getting the nutrition they need. Our lymphoedema specialists can help those who are experiencing swelling triggered by their treatment. We recently helped one patient who had extreme swelling in her face; she said that we’d helped her get her smile back.

Our extended care Our philosophy is to care for the whole person, and our care extends far beyond someone’s illness or symptoms. We understand that self-esteem, relaxation and emotional and spiritual wellbeing are just as important. We have a hairdresser and we also run Headstart, a service for

people experiencing hair loss due to illness or treatment. We can advise on the use of wigs, headscarves, hats, turbans, fringes, jewellery and make-up. We run creative therapy sessions and craft groups, which allow patients not only to relax and think about something other than their illness, but provides a chance to socialise with other people. Our team of complementary therapists have helped countless patients and carers relax, reduce anxiety and sleep better.

We have a team of chaplains who can offer spiritual support to those of any or no faith. Our team of counsellors can help patients and their loved ones cope better at a difficult time in their lives. We also have a social work team who can help in lots of different ways - anything a patient and their loved ones may need to make things easier to cope with.

Our excellent teamsAll our dedicated team members work to a set of St Ann’s values, which means that everyone is committed to providing the best service possible, no matter what role they do. Far from the gloomy, frightening place so often imagined by people when thinking of a hospice, it’s our staff and volunteers who really make St Ann’s what it is - a welcoming place, full of warmth and compassion. The feeling of being here has been described as being like a hug as soon as you walk through the door.

This is only a snapshot of life at St Ann’s. We couldn’t possibly tell you about all the amazing things that happen here on a daily basis, but here are some of the comments we’ve received from patients and their loved ones and carers, which might help sum up what we’re all about.

There are lots of myths and misconceptions about hospices. They are often thought of as scary or depressing places; somewhere people go but don’t leave; a place only for elderly people or only for people with cancer – the list goes on. In reality, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Our hospice is full of life, full of love and full of laughter.

“I always feel safe and cared for at this amazing place. Thank you to everyone”

“The staff are friendly & welcoming, very relaxed and easy going place where you can talk, laugh and cry.”

“It was a place of laughter and friendly faces which created its own family of members.”

“Fantastic staff, kind people wherever you go, very understanding to needs of relatives”

“ To have someone to help me through my darkest days has been the most important part of my journey. Thank you”

“She’s bright cheery & explains the benefits of the therapies, was so relaxed after reflexology.”

“Love, compassion and empathy was shown to us by every member of the St Ann’s Hospice staff.”

“The attention to detail is amazing, the kid’s room, books, café, chairs - I could go on.”

Yes, our patients may have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. Yes, it may be true that we can’t provide a cure. But what we can do is make sure that each and every one of our patients, and their loved ones and carers, are looked after in the best possible way by our very special teams. We can improve the quality of their lives, reduce any pain they may be experiencing, help them relax, and just allow people to feel “normal” again.

Here, we’d like to tell you about the “real” St Ann’s – the place that’s so often misunderstood.

Our environment We pride ourselves on creating a warm and welcoming place for patients and visitors. Our staff are always ready with a listening ear, a hug or a good cup of tea and they’re often described as “angels.” Walking around the hospice it’s never a surprise to hear laughter, music and chatting. Our buildings are light and airy, with beautifully kept gardens thanks to our amazing teams of volunteers.

We never miss an opportunity for a celebration, and our day therapy lounges are always decorated to mark Valentine’s Day, Easter, Wimbledon – any excuse to

indulge in one of the spectacular cakes made by our talented catering team! We’ve hosted many a party. We helped one lady celebrate her 101st birthday with a special tea party, and when a patient was unable to attend her daughter’s hen party, we threw one in the hospice for her. We regularly hold birthday parties, and we’ve even hosted wedding receptions, complete with decorations, cake and bubbly. At Christmas, you’ll find beautifully decorated trees around the hospice buildings – in fact our teams can get quite competitive about creating the best Christmas displays!

A £25 donation gives a patient an appointment with one of our hairdressers to make them feel good

£30 will pay for an hour’s bereavement session for a loved one with our specialist team

£50 will provide a patient with an hour of treatment with our lymphoedema, physiotherapy or occupational therapy teams

It costs £500 a day to care for an in-patient in the hospice

A £200 donation pays for a St Ann’s community team member to visit a patient in their home

£300 enables a patient to attend one of our day therapy sessions to improve the quality of their life

£100 donated to the hospice will allow us to provide vital transport for patients to attend our services

The donations we receive are really important to us. Every one helps someone. Thank you for all your support.

We need to raise £16,000 a day to keep the hospice doors open.

A new look for our shop in Monton Our shop in Monton has moved recently, and it now has a new look and a lovely boutique style to it. Thanks to the generosity of the shop landlord, the move and refurbishment hasn’t cost us anything - we’ve even had a reduction in the rent! If you’re in the area please feel free to pop in and see the new shop, which is just a few doors down from the old one on Monton Road.

As a charity, we rely on the support of our team of wonderful volunteers to help us provideour services. We’re lucky enough to have over 700 volunteers, who all give up their time for us,

and we just could not do what we do without them. If you’re interested in joining our team, please get in touch on 0161 498 3653 or [email protected].

Our amazing volunteers

Ken Parkes We were delighted that Ken Parkes, one of our gardening volunteers, was shortlisted as a finalist in the Be Proud Awards, run by Manchester City Council, recently. We nominated him in the Blossoming Communities category, which celebrates people or groups whose gardening achievements have brought about a positive change to the surroundings and the lives of people.

Ken has been an invaluable member of our team since he began volunteering in the hospice gardens five years ago. His wife was cared for at St Ann’s and Ken often comments his work in the gardens enables him to give something back for the care his family received.

Betty Murphy Betty Murphy has volunteered at St Ann’s for the last 45 years, and we marked the occasion with a tea party in her honour recently. She’s volunteered in many different areas of the hospice, including volunteering on the wards, driving to collect day care patients and working in day care. She has also been involved with different fundraising activities, taken part in plays that were put on at the hospice and was once the back end of a pantomime cow!

Betty says “It has been a privilege to witness the skill and devotion of the staff and, like many other volunteers, to become a member of such a great, caring team. As a volunteer, from walking through the door at St Ann’s you experience great warmth and friendship from everyone, you are accepted and welcomed.”

A growing relationship with colleagues in Lithuania Over the last few years, St Ann’s has been building relationships with palliative care colleagues in Lithuania. Thanks to the generosity of the Tiltas Trust, a charity that seeks to use experience and expertise already developedin one country for the good of people in another, St Ann’s staff have been able to visit Lithuania on several occasions, and host staff from Lithuania who have been able to visit us. Recently our Medical Director, Dr Philip Lomax, and Clinical Manager, Siân Burgess, were invited to speak at the International Palliative Care Conference in Lithuania, and to visit different medical centres in the country. Philip said “Palliative Care is arranged very differently in Lithuania with very few hospices and instead, beds being designated for palliative care patients in “nursing hospitals”. These beds are state funded at 45 euros per day with little charitable support available and only a newly emerging volunteering culture in the country. Despite the lack of resources, we saw lots of evidence of good care and we were received everywhere with amazing warmth and generosity.”We’re looking forward to continuing our links with the country, thanks to the Tiltas Trust.Dolly-Rose Campbell, who plays Gemma in Coronation Street, attended our shop opening. Our Accumulatorraises over £27,600!We ran our Accumulator Challenge for the second time in October, and we were overwhelmed with the support we received. It’s a Dragons’ Den meets The Apprentice style challenge, and local businesses were each given £100 to turn into the most profit over a month. A total of 40 teams took part and raised over £27,600.

Stockport Homes accumulated the most money and were crowned The Ultimate Accumulator at the awards ceremony, after raising a profit of £3,038.31. Roger Dean Estate Agents were the runner-up with £2,894.94.

Last year’s The Ultimate Accumulator winner was Marks & Spencer, in Handforth Dean who raised £2263.17. Both Stockport Homes and Roger Dean beat this achievement, showing that the competition is getting fierce and the stakes will be even higher in 2017! If you’d like to find out more or register for the 2017 challenge, please get in touch using the details above.

Our annual Golf Day returns to Mottram Hall on 11th May 2017 and we’d love you to join us. The day will start with bacon rolls and coffee on arrival followed by 18 holes of golf with a shotgun start at 1pm on the championship course. Prizes will be awarded on the day for the top three teams, in addition to some other competitions and followed by an informal BBQ in the evening.

Last year the event was a complete sell out with companies taking part across a range of industries, offering the opportunity for you to network with other businesses on the day as well. It is £475 to register for a team of four.

To book a team for the golf day please contact us on the details above.

If you’re unable to join us but would stilllike to promote your company at the event, we have additional sponsorship opportunities available from just £50 or alternatively you could donate a raffle prize to the event to have your business name featured on the prize listing.
