LAS PATRONAS JEWEL BALL 2014 . . . Una Noche en la Habana A Night in Havana . . . Bienvenidos to old Havana, where the beat of the conga drums is wrapped in the scent of tropical flowers. Slip back in time to the Tropicana Club of the 1950s – the time of Hemingway and Sinatra – a bygone era of sun-kissed palms and decadent beauty. Latin rhythms will sway on the ocean breeze as you sip a Cuba Libre surrounded by the vibrant colors, sights and sounds of legendary Havana. Welcome to Moonlit Mambo! FROM OUR JEWEL BALL CHAIR On August 2, we’ll welcome you to join us for an unforgettable evening under the stars at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. At the 68th Annual Jewel Ball, Moonlit Mambo, we will celebrate the color, romance and music of 1950s Havana. Drawing on the experiences of our friends and family who visited Cuba in the 1950s, as well as my visit to the famous island with my husband, Edward, and our sons Jack and Matthew, we’ll transform the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club into a music- and dance-filled gala you’ll remember for years to come. On this special evening, we will celebrate our beneficiary organizations who work every day to make San Diego a better place. And we’ll recognize our underwriters, donors and adver- tisers for their generous contributions, their shared vision of giving to those less fortunate, and their support of arts and education. We appreciate your stalwart faith and support. We are grateful to Bill Kellogg, John Campbell and the entire team at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club for their hospitality as we transform the tennis courts into a modern day Tropicana Club. My hat is off to the 50 volunteer members of Las Patronas who are giving so much time and talent to build the sets, raise the funds, and do it all with style and grace. Thank you to our president, Jena Joyce, for her leadership. And, special recognition should go to Kathryn Gayner and Suzanne Melvin for leading the design team with their stunning vision of Havana. I especially would like to thank Moonlit Mambo Co-Chairs Melinda Mahony and Cari Massaad – you are both amazingly talented women and I am blessed to know you and be able to work with you on this special event. So, get your dancing shoes ready and join us at this year’s Jewel Ball! Enjoy an evening of Cuban-inspired music and dance, specialty cocktails, delicious dinner, and an opportunity to celebrate with friends old and new who share our mission of making a difference in the San Diego community. EMILIO NARES FOUNDATION HONORED BY CNNAfter losing their son, Emilio, to cancer in 2000,

Richard and Diane Nares started the Emilio Nares Foundation (ENF) to assist families with children battling childhood Leukemia and other forms of cancer. As a partner in their mission since 2005, Las Patronas is pleased and proud to share that Richard Nares has been recognized as one of 10 national CNN Heroes of the Year for 2013.

Our first grant to ENF was for all-terrain wheelchairs in 2005; since then the foundation

has been one of our major beneficiaries, receiving a 15-passenger van for the “Ride with Emilio” program. The van ensures that children battling cancer arrive at the hos-pital on time, every time, for treatment.

Thank you to our generous supporters for making grants to this, and many other inspiring organizations, possible!

Above, Las Patronas President Jena Joyce and Jewel Ball Chair Susie Piegza join Richard Nares (left) and driver Armando Camberos on an inspiring ride to Rady Children’s Hospital with patient Sara and her mom, Furat Kaju.

Your gift to Las Patronas not only provides much-needed funding to our nonprofits, it may also come with fabulous benefits,

such as advertising in our Jewel Ball program, listing on our website, Jewel Ball keepsake logo opportunities, or tickets to the

Jewel Ball itself. To participate as a Jewel Ball 2014 underwriter, please call Bridget Musante at (619) 890-7765.

We deeply regret the omission of any Jewel Ball 2014 donor, underwriter or specialty advertiser caused by print deadlines.

For 68 years, our all-volunteer group of 50 compassion-ate, determined (and energetic) women has stepped up to make a difference in our community. Since

1946, Las Patronas has raised more than $17 million for more than 1,000 nonprofits throughout our beautiful San Diego. It is a Tradition of Giving that inspires us every year. I applaud each and every member, active and advisory, for the dedication you have shown to our mission. I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to work

alongside you and to give back to San Diego in this substantive way.

But we simply could not do what we do without the generosity of our underwriters, donors, advertisers and Jewel Ball guests. You make all of our grants possible! We are driven by your trust in us, and we strive to be excellent stewards of every contribution.

On behalf of our membership, muchas gracias for your faith in Las Patronas. Come MAMBO with us on August 2 at Jewel Ball 2014, to celebrate our Tradition of Giving together!

SPIRIT OF GIVING GOES TO ALPHA PROJECT

In January 2015, Las Patronas will rec-ognize Alpha Project with the Las Patronas Spirit of Giving Award. Founded in 1986 as a simple project offering work opportuni-ties for homeless men, today Alpha Project serves over 4,000 people daily, empowering their clients to take personal responsibility for solving problems.

The relationship began in 1999 when they received an LP grant to purchase a used van. Discussion started regarding Alpha Project coming in to help build Jewel Ball 2000 and a deep friendship blossomed. Every year since, Alpha Project has sent a crew of eight volunteers, many of whom return year after year, to help during our workweek at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

“After you’ve been an active member of

Las Patronas for a year or two, and have lived through your first few workweeks building the ball, you know that we couldn’t survive without help from the Alpha guys,” said Pat Marsch, former LP president. “They just do the job until it’s done. Appreciating how essential these guys are to our success, we try hard to make sure they know that we appreciate them – a lot.”

We are honored to have spent the last 14 years working side by side with the men of Alpha Project. We look forward to many more.

This Las Patronas publication was made possible through the generosity of Annette and Daniel Bradbury.
