May 28 th -Memorial Day-is a district sponsored Golf Tournament with the proceeds going to support Sight First II. March may be windy and cold. Our snowbirds may be south. But Lions are making plans. Find your walking shoes, clean up your Sunday best, locate your hammer and favorite paintbrush and dust off those clubs. We’ve got plans for fundraising, fellowship and service and YOU’RE INVITED!!! Although many of us are still shoveling snow, believe it or not, spring will soon be here. And with the spring season we have the opportunity to “re-awaken” our support for Lionism in our communities. Some clubs will be holding traditional Pancake Breakfasts; some will have Easter Egg Hunts for local children; some will continue photo-screenings in their local schools. In addition, we have a District-wide Walk For Sight to support Campaign Sight First II coming up on April 21 st in Montour Falls. All Lions, Lioness, and Leos are encouraged to participate in this fun activity which will also be open to the general public and will receive significant media attention. All of these worthwhile Lionistic activities deserve the support of all our members. These events give you an opportunity to get some well-deserved “PR” (public relations) for your community service, and at the same time provide something concrete that you can talk about with prospective members. Get your friends and neighbors involved – ask them to join you as you make your community a better place. Please get your reservations in soon for the MD-20 (State) Convention in Saratoga Springs the weekend of April 27-29. Laura and I look forward to seeing you there. More from VDG Bob on Page 2......

Getting to Know You..... Getting to know all about you

About John Steward Jr....................... the person.Hello, my name is John Stewart, Jr. I graduated from Horseheads High School in 1986. At birth I received several points of

brain damage. My optic nerve didn’t develop completely which makes me legally blind. My motherand father took me to the Institute for Development of Human Potential when I was three years old.It started five years of hard work for the three of us. Crawling, creeping, hand over hand on ahorizontal ladder, and studying. I learned to read before I was four. My mother passed on in 1984 soshe missed my graduation. MY father became a charter member of the Southern Tier Retired Lionsin 1990. When he attended zone meetings and district meetings and state meetings I liked to attend.Since I was not retired, I was not eligible to join his club, but I was able to join the Horseheads LionsClub and attended every meeting since then. When I moved to Corning I transferred and in theyears there I was assistant Tail Twister and helped the Lion Tamer set up for each meeting. Thenwhen my job at Capabilities Inc. moved to Mexico I moved to Challenge Industries in Ithaca and

moved to Watkins Glen and transferred to the Watkins-Montour Lions Club. District Governor Dick McClure asked my dadand I to become Sergeant at Arms at the Multiple District Convention in 1993...we have kept that job since then. DistrictGovernor Ed Kretsch asked me to shine the District gong in 1994 and so I became Lion Tamer for the district. Then Ibecame Lion Tamer for the Watkins-Montour Lions. I was asked to become an self advocate for the Finger Lakes DDSO.The following year I became a member of the Director’s Advisory Council and speak for other handicapped individuals. I washonored in 2005 by an Uplinger Award from my club.

I graduated from Ithaca High School ten years before PDG Jim Dormady (the father of ourDistrict) I guess that ages me. I graduated from Buffalo State College in 1953 with a degree inArt Education. I served with the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War as a Field RadioRepair instructor. After leaving the army I moved to Horseheads as the first full-time high schoolart teacher. I rented a room with John St. John and his wife. John was a member of theHorseheads Lions Club and invited me to join that club. The following year I was elected to theBoard of Directors and realized I was making a serious contribution and attended every meetingfrom then on. The following year I was elected secretary. As secretary you become a member ofthe zone and district cabinets. Horseheads honored me as Lion of the year the next year. I was

secretary until I had to resign to spend ever hour possible working with my son in 1970. After teaching for thirty years Iretired and in a couple of years PDG John Palmer, Bob Owen (who became Charter President) and I (Charter Secretary) for theSouthern Tier Retired Lions Club. In 1992 I was honored as Lion of the Year for that Club. Three Years later I was electedpresident. I attended every zone, district and Multiple District meeting, I still do. DG Dick McClure asked me to serve asJourney for Sight Chairman and over that year I finally got all the secrets for that job in hand. Then I became Historian andhave collected all the material I can to create archives for every year of 20 e2’s existence. MY son and I attended InternationalConventions in Minneapolis ’96, Philadelphia ’97, Montreal ’98 and Detroit 04. Syracuse hosted the USA-Canada Forum in1997 and we were so impressed we attended Lexington ’98, Birmingham, Alabama ’99, Tucson 2000. In 1999 we made ourlongest trip to Birmingham, England. We attended the USA-Canada Forum in Columbus, Ohio in ’06. I have been honoredwith the John Poor PDG Award, two Presidential citations, Melvin Jones Award from the Watkins-Montour Lions. In 27 years ofLionism I still try to do more than people expect out of every assignment.

“Every year about 30 children are admitted to the Hospital with severe decompensation of Diabetes, - saidDr. Ihor Hrytsiuk, Paediatric Endocrinologist and coordinator of the Project. Such facts indicate that we werenot able so far to teach appropriately children and their parents how to deal with this disease. The Centre willwork for the aim of teaching them how to control the disease, and not to be ruled by it. We aim to make the lifeof these children easier”.

The Doctor mentioned also that in his practice he is often confronted by the fact that children with Diabeteshave psychological problems in communication with their peers, when they suddenly appear to be “different”form others. Psychological support could help them to cope better with this problem.

The teaching sessions will take place in small groups (5-6 persons in a group). It is planned that over oneyear every child with Diabetes will go through the teaching course. “Constant and quality teaching of childrenand their families may significantly change the prognosis of this chronic disease and three to four timesimprove the control of the Diabetes”, - explained Dr. Hrytsiuk.

Svitlana Buchynska, whose ten-year old girl is suffering Diabetes for already three years, considers creationof such a Centre immensely important. “We, as parents, know very little, - she says. – And here, we hope, thecombination of professional support and psychological help will enable us to keep the Diabetes under control. We feel that it is very important to teach our children adapt better and deal with the Disease in many differentsituations”.

The initiators of the Project assert that the process of creation went on for several years. One of theprincipal directions of Lions Clubs activities all over the world is supporting blind people. Diabetes is one of themain causes of blindness. Besides, opening of such a “school” is a link in a chain of the worldwide Project“Understanding Diabetes”. Corning representatives Gloria and William (Vasyl) Misnick, US citizens, help theHospital already for many years. This time they collected within the community 5.4 thousands dollars for thisaim. Besides the Corning Lions Club, the Corning Rotary Club and the Christ Episcopal Church donated 2thousands dollars each for the Centre. “We were working for the realization of this Project over several yearsand are really happy that finally have made it possible, - shared her joy Gloria Misnick, - We hope that everyLviv citizen will be able to come here”.

“This article was published in the Lviv, Ukraine “Livska Newspaper”and was translated by Dr. Ihor Hrytsiuk,Endocrinologist , into English for publication in our Newsletter.”--Lion Gloria Misnick, Corning PR Chair.

Watkins-MontourWatkins Glen Montour Falls Lions Club held a Photo Eye Screening Program for the children at Schuyler

Head Start, Montour Falls, NY. We screened 59 children. PCC Frank Muccini and his wife Lioness Phyllis plus 8Lions from the Club assisted in the Screening working 31 hours. As usual the children were great and enjoyedthe Tattoos we gave out to each child. Good bribe. We also had three new trainees from the Club being trainedworking the camera. I wont tell you the number of films we had to redo, naturally we can claim the use on thechildren; closing eyes and etc.. From PDG Bob Mizzoni, Club Editor

The Wandering Waterloo Gavel It became a sight to see. King Lion was to set a precedent on how to pay a fine. However, King Lion Skip

insisted that the King Lion could not be fined because he was in charge of the club and what he said goes. Nottrue King Lion. You give the gavel to the Lion Tail Twister, he is in charge. THE GAVEL, it’s missing again.King Lion Skip says it has got legs and walks off. Well, Lion Tail Twisteraccused Lion Norm Buisch and Lion Fritz Chrysler of helping it walk. This gota bunch of laughs and the defendants no backing. They paid the fines. KingLion claimed that when the gavel reappears it is to have a $5.00 bill attached toit. The gavel did show up and was presented to the King Lion with a $5.00 billattached. I quote, “Bill for $5.00 for one lost gavel – fee for safe keeping of lostitem. Thanks Missy.” This bill was not paid by the King Lion and will bepresented to the board for the betterment of the Club.

The Lansing Lions Club is in the process of raising funds for the construction of a Gazebo/Bandstand to bebuilt in our local park. This projected idea came from myself when I was appointed chairperson of the Ad HocCommittee upon joining the club four years ago. Although it was slow getting started, we have made greatstrides in raising funds by having a successful garage sale last spring (and hope to have another one this springif we ever see spring). Additionally, we have been raising funds by selling historical Lansing throws which depictlocal history, i.e., our lighthouse at Lansing Park, Ludlowville Falls, original high school, farming just to mention afew. The throws have been selling for $48.00 and thus far have been a great success. To date we have nearly$13,000 and I might mention that we also received a Grant from NYS Bermuda Foundation in the amount of$3,000. We have concerts in our park each summer and hopefully this will be a beautiful setting for not only theconcerts but for special occasions such as weddings, etc. We are currently seeking estimates for constructingthe gazebo/bandstand and it is our great wish to break ground in the spring as I noted above. I am proud to benot only the chairperson of this project but an active member of the Lansing Lions Club.

AuburnThe Auburn Lions “Shutterbugs” have been busy again this year with the Pre-School vision screening

Screenings are planned for St. Joseph’s Elementary, the Neighborhood House, and in thePort Byron Central School District. Thanks to Lions Bill Chermak, Bob McCall, and Bill Stoelzel for performingthis worthwhile effort, and to Auburn Dr. Peter Doane for reading the pictures for our club and community.

On December 6, 2006 the Lions of Region IV, Zone 2 (Auburn, Cato-Meridian, Union Springs andWeedsport) held their annual Christmas Party, this year hosted by Auburn, at the Sunset Restaurant in Auburn.A good time was had by all with a delicious meal supplied by the Sunset, prize drawings, and some jokes andcamaraderie to put everybody in a good mood as they began the holiday season. This has been an annualevent for several years within the Zone and we are already looking forward to the next event this comingDecember. From Lion Steve Chermak, Club Editor

Big FlatsJanuary was a great month to be a Lion. First we heard from Eddy Daniels on the shrimp farming industry

and his recent move to Big Flats, and for the second meeting he provided us with a generous bounty of shrimpcocktail! Thanks!

We also inducted four new members in January! They are Lions Richard Seely, Bob Byland, DeanZimmerman, and Judy Zimmerman. Welcome newLions! January was also tempered by some healthproblems, so let’s all keep Lions Bim VanEtten, DonRoe, Jim Adamy, and Ray Conklin in our thoughts.

Coming up we have the Valentines Day 5K Raceon Sunday, and Blind Bowling on Saturday, March10th. Further down the road we have the opportunityto host a new Coffee Rest Stop at Kanona, SpringBreak, April 13th, 14th, and 15th.

CORNING | Eight-year-old Nathan Prisella is seeing things much more clearlythese days. The Kent Phillips student is one of thousands of local children members ofFinger Lakes Lions clubs have tested for possible vision problems. For more than four years, members of area Lioness clubs have used aportable, battery-operated camera called a PhotoScreener to help detect visiondeficiencies in children. Nathan was tested last year.“His left eye was so bad that he was only using his right eye to see,” said hismother Heidi Prisella. “Without this program, we would have never found out.He would pass school eye exams because he would just use his right eye. We would have never known.”

Wolcott Speaking of Roger: Yes, you read it right. Roger said he’d come to the next meeting. How do I know that?

Because I saw him at the last meeting! I’ve been debating whether or not to make a big deal out of this. I mean, would we make a big deal out of any member showing up after an absence of nearly 2 years? Damn right wewould! And of course, Roger is a beloved recent past president who really put this club back on track. He didn’tjust work like a Lion. He worked like a dog, which we all need to remember. Roger is a perfect example of whywe need to constantly think about membership. Our responsibilities need to be spread out more. As a team, wecan do anything. If it comes down to a handful, we’ll all burn out very quickly. Do your part. Promote Lionism! And welcome back, Rog! From [email protected]

We are continuing to adhere to our DG goals for the Club. A new Club is still on our list; and hopefully, willbecome final first part of 2007. We have added some new members; a husband and wife team. On Feb 20 wewill be adding another husband and wife team. During holidays we served by ringing the bell for SalvationArmy. Monies collected exceeded $2,000.00 dollars. We took advantage of the mild weather and squeezed inanother Highway Cleanup. We also are very busy with photo screening--one day care center with 60 childrenand one Head Start program with 20 children. Word is catching on to the public that Photoscreening is awonderful tool. Already many toddlers have been fitted for glasses and improved the morale of them and theirfamilies

An Insider’s Guide to PRThe February Issue, Page 38 by Jeff

Crilley

Do you wonder why the media never pick up on your stories? Are you tired ofpitching press releases the news media simply ignores?

After two decades of beating the street as a TV reporter, I have a scoop for you:the media need good stories. But most stories are pitched so poorly that theyare lost in the blizzard of faxes that blanket every news-room.

So here are five simple steps to increase your chances of getting covered:1. BE UNUSUAL.....The old adage about “man bites dog” still holds true. The news doesn’t cover what’s

normal. We cover the abnormal.2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT REPORTER.....Perhaps the most common mistake even some PR pros make is

trying to sell a good story to the wrong person. Most reporters have a specialty such as “crime” or “business.”So seek out the reporter who will have the most to benefit from your story.

3. CALL THE REPORTER ON THE PHONE....Why is this so important? A major market newsroom getsthousands of press releases every day. Even small newspapers can get hundreds.

4. WAIT FOR A SLOW NEWS DAY....The holidays are the slowest “news times” of the year. Whengovernment offices are closed, most of our news sources disappear. Take advantage of it. In fact, take out yourcalendar and begin circling government holidays.

5. SOLVE A PROBLEM.....Watch the newspaper and the TV newscasts for what I call “woe is me” story. Ifthe news media is doing a lot of stories about a community problem, be the answer to the problem.

[Editor’s Note: Read the article for more depth, but remember, the author is seeking a reporter to write thestory as opposed to submitting a compelling, interesting composition. Newspapers like free, well writtenarticles.]

Horseheads Meeting Tip Horseheads Lions club has had two very interesting and productive meetings, We have invited an Army

Recruiter and a NYS Trooper to our last two meetings as a way of saying thanks for the job that they aredoing in our community. These meetings have proved to be both informative and very enjoyable for allconcerned. We plan to continue this policy on a monthly basis and hopefully this will generate some newmembers as well. We will be inviting members from local fire departments and other police and servicebranches also in the near future. Just thought I might pass this along if other clubs would be interested in doingthe same thing. From Lion Jim Hackett, Club President
