Pope Francis’ prayer intention for June: That social networks may work towards that

Inclusiveness which respects others for their differences. The Internet is a gift of God, but it is also a great responsibility. Communica-tion technology, its places, its instruments have brought with it a lengthening of horizons, a widening, for so many people. It can offer immense possibilities for encounter and solidarity. May the digital network not be a place of aliena-tion. May it be a concrete place, a place rich in humanity.

Our diocese is promoting a one year distance learning course in faith devel-opment in partnership with the Maryvale Institute

Thank you for last week’s collection The 2nd collection today is for Peter’s Pence which funds the Holy Father’s charity work. The 2nd collection next week is for the church refurbishment.

SUNDAY TAKEAWAY

We would probably go to confes-sion to Peter sooner than to any of the other apostles. He is perhaps a more striking example of the simple fact of holiness. Jesus says to us as he said, in effect, to Peter: “It is not you who have chosen me, but I who have chosen you. Peter, it is not hu-man wisdom that makes it possible for you to believe, but my Father’s revelation. I, not you, build my Church.” Paul’s experience of the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus was the driving force that made him one of the most zealous, dynamic, and courageous ambassadors of Christ the Church has ever had. But persecution, humiliation, and weak-ness became his day-by-day carry-ing of the cross, material for further transformation. The dying Christ was in him; the living Christ was his life.

Saints Peter and Paul and Rome

We remember today Saints Peter and Paul who guided the early church just after the time of Jesus. Both died as martyrs for the faith in Rome, in the early 60’s, just thirty years after the death of Jesus. Peter was crucified upside down in the courtyard to the left of St. Peter’s Basilica (in the courtyard be-hind the arch where the Swiss Guards stand on du-ty) and Paul was beheaded between Rome and the sea, in a place now called Tre Fontane (Italian for three fountains after the legend that the three springs in the spot mark the three places where Paul’s head bounced after being beheaded). Peter was buried in the nearest cemetery which was on top of Vatican Hill and St. Peter’s Basilica was later built on top of Peter’s tomb, the main altar being directly on top of his tomb. Paul was also buried in the nearest cemetery and the Basilica of St. Paul’s outside the Walls was later build on top of his tomb, the main altar being directly on top of his tomb.

Prayer for our sick and housebound. Lord our God. For you have called us to serve you and one another in love. Bless our sick and housebound today so that they may bear their illness in union with Jesus' sufferings and restore them quickly to health. Bless those who have grown old in your service and give them courage and strength in their faith. Lead us all to eternal glory. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
