Victor's Top YearThe year just passed, 1964,

was the greatest year for RCAVictor Records in its history,which makes it a sensationalyear indeed. As it was put inGeneral Sarnoff's report lastweek, "The RCA Victor Rec-ord Division achieved the high-est sales volume in its history.RCA Victor currently leads inthe lucrative Broadway showalbum field with two of theseason's greatest musical hits,`Hello Dolly,' and 'Fiddler OnThe Roof.' "

In addition to the two showalbums Victor also hadhealthy sales due to Al Hirt,whose "Honey In the Horn"and "Cotton Candy" LP's bothwere 500,000 sellers in 1964,from Henry Mancini with histracks of the music from "Cha-rade," "Pink Panther" and"Dear Heart," with Elvis' LP'sof music from "Viva Las Ve-gas," "Kissin' Cousins" and"Roustabout," plus strong al-bums by John Gary and JimReeves, and powerful singlesby Al Hirt ("Java"), Gale Gar-nett ("We'll. Sing In The Sun-shine"), Elvis ("Kissin' Cous-sins"), Sam Cooke ("GoodNews"), and Lorne Greene,("Ringo").

At the same time the parentcompany, RCA, announced thatfor the third successive yearthe firm had the highest profitsin its history, with earnings toexceed 80 million, up morethan 20 per cent over 1963.

A fine year, 1964!

Nina Simone SuesNina Simone filed for a tem-

porary injunction last weekagainst the continued sale anddistribution of an LP called"Starring Nina Simone" re-leased on the Premier albumlabel. Suit, for $1 million,names Philip Landwehr, LewisHarris and "John Doe" as of-ficers of Premier Albums, andR. H. Macy and Company andother retail outlets and distrib-uters. Miss Simone claims thatshe purchased the album at 98'cents in Washington at WaxeyMaxey's (Silverman) QualityMusic record store. After lis-tening to the album she claimsshe recognized various selec-tions as some old demonstra-tion tapes she made in 1955and 1956 and taped under in-ferior recording conditions.Her attorney's claim that the

copy on the Premier albumjacket misleads the public intobelieving that the set containscurrent performances recordedwith high fidelity equipment.The court was told that MissSimone's attorneys had askedPremier Records to stop dis-tributing the album, but thatPremier claimed it had a validcontract between plaintiff andGlory Records, executed byformer manager Jerry Field.Phil Rose of Glory Records al-legedly said that no such re-cording agreement was everauthorized by or issued by hiscompany.

Columbia Buys FenderColumbia Records and its

parent firm CBS, are really inan acquisitive mood these days.Last week Columbia RecordsDistributing Corp. purchasedthe Fender Guitar and Ampli-fier Company for $13 million.Fender developed the solidbody guitar in 1946 and itssales skyrocketed when thou-sands of rock and roll acts,and other touring combos,adopted the Fender as theirown. Firm has continued to bea leader in the field, and hasled with innovations and de-signs. The two former ownersand officers, Donald Randalland Leo Fender, will continuewith the company. Randallwill be vice president and gen-eral manager of the FenderMusical Instruments operatingunit of CRDC, and Fender will

continue as special consultantin research and development.

CRDC's parent, ColumbiaRecords, recently acquired Ori-ole Records in England,buying into record companiesin France and Germany. AndColumbia Records' parent,CBS, just purchased a baseballteam, the New York Yankees.

Chess InternationalChess Records will launch a

world-wide expansion programin early February beginningwith the setting up of an of-fice in London. Firm, accord-ing to veepee Marshall Chess,will open offices in many oth-er major cities in Europe, Asia,and South America. Accordingto Marshall, all releasesabroad will now bear theChess trademark. Marshalland Phil Chess will journeyto Europe to celebrate the op-ening of the London office inFebruary.

Mainstream MeetingsMainstream Records held re-

gional distributor meetings lastweek in New York, San Fran-cisco and Chicago. Execs BobShad, Phil Picone and JuggyGayles chaired the New Yorkmeet and Bobby and Phil cov-ered the other two. On Janu-ary 8, 9, 10 Bob Shad andPhil Picone were in Miami forfurther distributor meetings,and this week will be in everymajor market to promote thefirm's 10 new albums.

A PPM, Trini WorldThe next single records by

Peter, Paul and Mary on War-ner Bros., and by Trini Lopezon Reprise will be issued si-multaneously throughout theworld. Sides by PPM are "ForLovin' Me," and "MondayMorning," and by Trini "TheLemon Tree" and "PrettyEyes."

Al Hirt's GoldieAl Hirt will receive his sec-

ond gold record award for 1964when he obtains his goldie foralbums sales of over $1 mil-lion for his RCA Victor LP of"Cotton Candy." "Cotton Can-dy's" sale of over 500,000 LP'swas certified last week by theRIAA. Set was produced byNashville record chief Chet At-kins, who also produced Hirt'sfirst 1964 goldie "Honey InThe Horn," which was certi-fied by the RIAA last Aprilfor sales of over $1 million.

Philips Jan. ProgramPhilips Records new Janu-

ary program, which goes un-der the title of "3 For TheMoney -4th To Go," was pre-sented to distributors lastweek in New York, Atlanta,Chicago and Los Angeles. Pro-gram features 13 albums, in-cluding sets by the SwingleSingers, Teresa Brewer, John-ny Mathis, Lester Lanin, the'sound track of "The Umbrel-las of Cherbourg," Edith Piaf,the London Symphony Orches-tra under Pierre Monteaux,and Arthur Grumiaux and theLamoureux Orchestra.

Meanwhile Philips Recordsalso announced the first releasein its new "Double Hit" se-ries, a special series of pastsingle hits featuring two hitson each record. The series isbeing made available initiallythrough a pre -pack which con-tains 72 records. Artists in-clude the Four Seasons, Seren-dipity Singers, Nina Simone,Springfields, and Woody Her-man.

Liberty Names ExecsLiberty Records has appoint-

ed Lee Mandell, former LPsales manager, as marketingdirector for Liberty Records aswell as subsidiaries Dolton andImperial Records. Bob Fead,former promotion director, hasbeen named national salesmanager of the labels.

Colpix Records, introducedsome sweeping changes lastweek in the firm's marketingand wholesale pricing proced-ures. The firm reduced distrib-utor price for product, and si-multaneously eliminated allfree -goods deals on singles.

The new policies include re-placement of free -goodsbonuses and of other discountsby a consistantly-maintainedreduced distributor price foralbums as well as singles; anincreased return privilege onsingles; and complete elimina-tion of allocations and guar-anteed sales. Firm says it re-cognizes distributors specialneeds in connection with quan-tity album sales to rack job-bers and one stops. On thesesales a 10 per cent free mer-chandising allowance is pro-vided.

Under the Colpix 1965 plan,distributors cost on 45 rpmsingles will be "reduced sub-stantially" from the formerprice level. Distributor cost on$3.98 albums will be 18 centsless per album, and on higherpriced albums reduction willamount to 22 cents per albumagainst previous prices.

annual Christmas holiday rockshow at the Brooklyn Fox wasa winner with a 10 -day grossof $186,000. The jockey's takewas a new record for hisChristmas shows, and wasonly $20,000 below his all-timehigh gross last Labor Day of$206,000.

Kaufman said that his nextBrooklyn Fox show, whichdoesn't start until Easter Sun-day, next April 18, is alreadythree-quarters set in terms oftalent. Featured will be Mar-vin Gaye, the Miracles, theRighteous Brothers, Little An-thony and the Imperials, Mar-tha and the Vandellas, the Su-premes, the Temptations andthe Four Tops. In addition,Kaufman expected either Ger-ry and the Pacemakers orTommy Quickly. Decision wasdue to be made late last weekby phone with Britain's BrianEpstein, manager of both acts.

Goody Price SlashThe top record albums by

the top pop artists at $1.79.That's the latest promise ex-tended to disc fans by the re-tail record wizard of NewYork's West 49th Street, SamGoody. "This is no temporarything," Goody said last week."You can take my word thatit's permanent. Late last yearI said I'd do it and now it'sdone."

Actually, the $1.79 albumprice is pegged to Goody'sregular schedule of ads in theNew York Times (Monday,Thursday, Saturday and Sun-day) and in the afternoon NewYork Post on Fridays. "Any-one who brings the ad in toany of the stores gets the $1.79price, Goody continued. Pre-viously the "bring in the ad"price was $1.89. Without thead, the same product costs$2.98 in most cases.

Product involved is by suchartists as the Beatles, the DaveClark Five, the Rolling Stones,Peter and Gordon, Pete Seeger,Andy Williams, Robert Gouletand Barbra Streisand.

Goody added that his storesenjoyed a $1,000,000 increasein sales last year over 1963.

Victor Gets "Flora"RCA Victor Records has

secured the recording rights tothe forthcoming Broadwaymusical, "Flora, the Red Men-ace," which will star Liza Min-nelli. Miss Minnelli, daughterof veteran performer JudyGarland, was last seen on theNew York stage in the off-Broadway revival of "BestFoot Forward."

The musical has music byJohn Kander, lyrics by FredEbb, and book co-authored byRobert Russell and George Ab-bott. Abbott will also directthe opus, which is being pro-duced by Harold Prince.

Meanwhile the LeonardBernstein - Comden - Greenshow, a musical adaptation of"The Skin Of Our Teeth," wascanceled last week due to adispute between Bernstein andhis collaborators. CBS wasbacking the show to the tuneof $400,000 and the cast setwas expected to go to Colum-bia. Columbia officially an-nounced it would record "Kel-ly," which was understandablesince it had invested $50,000in the show.

Meanwhile, rumor had itthat United Artists Recordswould get cast rights to thenew Frank Loesser Show "Ex -Lover" and that papers wouldbe signed next week.

Mercury Records, which hadjust issued the cast recordingof Buddy Hacket's "I Had ABall," obtained the cast rightsto the musical version of "TheYearling," Firm put up a ma-jor share of the $300,000 back-ing in the show.

Angel's "Carmen"The big release from Capi-

tol's Angel label this week isthe Maria Callas "Carmen," adeluxe three -LP set. In addi-tion to Miss Callas, NicolaiGedda, Andrea Guiot and Rob-ert Massard are starred. An-gel also issued a lot of otherstrong classical wax includingsets by Yehudi Menuhin, anda new Artur Schnabel LPfrom his Beethoven Sonataspackage on Great Recordingsof the Century.

STEVE LAWRENCE:He made"Sammy"run andit's stillrunningdue to hisdynamicperfor-mance

Critics praised him. About a year agoa show opened on Broadway at the 54thStreet Theater called "What Makes Sam-my Run?" The critics panned the showunmercifully, but one of the actors inthe show received universal praise. Hewas the young man who played SammyGlick. His name -Steve Lawrence.

By now it is generally accepted thatSteve and Steve alone has been responsi-ble for keeping "What Makes SammyRun?" running, in spite of those criticalraps handed the show a year ago. He hasproved that he has a tremendous follow-ing among the millions of New Yorkersand citizens from surrounding areas, whohave seen him on TV, in night clubs, onpersonal appearances, or have heard himon disc.

Fought for part. Lawrence got the partof Sammy in the show because he wantedit and fought for it. "I made sacrificesboth professionally and economically tobe in 'Sammy'," Steve said last week. Iput my career on the line. If I had floppedin the show I would have hurt my showbusiness career severely. From a finan-cial standpoint I could have earned five

times what I do in the show by playingnight clubs and TV.

"I wanted to be in 'Sammy' for a lotof reasons. First of all I wanted to proveI could play the part. Second, I feel thatit is important for an entertainer's careerto get involved in as many areas of theentertainment business as possible, forthe more areas that a performer canwork the more longevity he adds to his ca-reer. It also increases his earning capacityin other fields, and doesn't make him asdependent on one branch of show busi-ness only.

"The third reason I wanted to play'Sammy' was because I want to get in-volved in motion pictures, and one of theways to do this is to get good reviews ina Broadway show.

Other fields. "You know, record per-formers have a hard time breaking intoother show business media. I find thisstrange since we are all in the same busi-ness-show business. Anyone who sells rec-ords and can perform has appeal, andcould do well on the stage or in motionpictures. I think film producers are idiotsfor not trying to groom a Bobby Vintonand other solid record performers to be-come movie names."

Although Steve has been praised for hisportrayal of the mean, egocentric Sammy

he is as much like Sammy as Santa Clausis like the Big Bad Wolf. He is happi-ly married to the attractive Eydie Gorme,and he has two young sons, David andMichael. He-and Eydie-have had thesame manager, Kenny Greengrass, for al-most 10 years, a most unusual thing inthe mercurial entertainment business, andKenny is more like a friend than a man-ager.

Charitable enterprise. Every year, forthe past five, he and Eydie have starredon the New York Cerebral Palsy Tele-thon, an arduous task at best and aneven tougher one for Steve these dayssince they start on a Saturday after hehas played two performances of "Sam-my." It is estimated that Steve and Eydiehave raised between $2.5 and $3 millionfor the charity via the Telethons.

Steve intends to stay with "Sammy"until his contract runs out, (it still hasfive months to go). He's not only inter-ested in getting into movies, but he in-tends to resume his night club career(with Eydie) and of course to keep onmaking records.

Something to say. For himself Stevelikes "good" songs, "songs that are wellwritten and have something to say." Hebelieves that songs that make the top 10are usually "good" songs since "they had

to have something to say for the publicto buy them." He also believes that "mu-sic, like other arts, reflects the times welive in, and if songs are frantic today,it's because the times we live in arefrantic."

Hard to break through. "I think it istougher for a good singer to breakthrough today than it has ever been be-fore," Steve said, when asked about to-day's pop disc scene. "The reasons aremany, the first being the lack of thetype of material that a good singer needs.Writers don't turn out the older, standardtype of material in any quantity today,and this is what a good singer must have.

"Next is the fact that there are fewerplaces for a good singer to get his basictraining. Most of the clubs where I brokein have closed. So there is nowherefor the young singer to go to make hismistakes as he is learning his business.

"Instead he has to make his mistakeson TV before millions of people, which Ithink is unfair to the singer. But whereelse can he go:

Radio no help. "The good young singergets no help from the radio stations whenhe is starting. The kind of material thata good singer performs, especially a newsinger, isn't played by many stations to-day. Once a good music record would beplayed by seven or eight stations in NewYork. Now all you can do with a recordlike that, if you are not a star, is to get itexposed on one or two stations. JackJones has made it, but how many JackJones's are there? Very few."

Steve's favorite people, singers that is,are Jack Jones, Andy Williams, Tony Ben-nett, and Vic Damone. As for girls-well,it's all Eydie Gorme.

John Barry, who is having a lot of funcomposing the scores for the JamesBond epics, started his career lead-ing a rock and roll band in London.

Started with rock. If you want to become a composer formovies, start out with a rock and roll band. At least that's thepath followed by John Barry, who has written the scores forall of the James Bond movies, "Dr. No.," "From Russia WithLove," and "Goldfinger." He does much of his work for UnitedArtists music, among other firms.

Barry, who is now in his early thirties, is an Englishman whoentered the music business as the leader of a rock and roll bandin London back in 1957. After a few years working with the rockgroup, he became a record producer for EMI and handled AdamFaith's recording dates. Faith, a big star in England (and nowmaking some noise here) was featured in two films "BeatGirl," and "Never Let Go," and Barry handled his recordingwork in both. Barry also scored the latter picture.

Gave up band. From then on Barry was set as a screen com-poser. He gave up the band (although he still digs the rock)and has concentrated on music for the films. Among his credits,in addition to the Bond features, are "Zulu," "Seance On A WetAfternoon," and the upcoming "Mr. Moses." He will also scorethe next James Bond picture "Thunderball," and the picture"King Rat," from Jimmy Clavell's best-selling novel.

"I've tried to retain a continuity in the Bond picture," saidBarry when interviewed in New York last week. "The Bondmovies are not very subtle, everything happens out in front,and the music has to go along with it. However, they are the

type of movies you can write a main theme for, and withluck the theme can become popular like "From Russia WithLove."

Not always commercial. Barry points out that it isn't neces-sary to write a pop song for a movie, or even a commercial score,for the music to be commercial on LP. "If the music works forthe movie, and it isn't necessarily commercial, that doesn'thave to hurt its LP chances. You can't always write com-mercial scores. Take "Seance On A Wet Afternoon," for in-stance. A pop song, or even a main theme, would have destroyedthe mood of the picture. I admit that "Seance" is rather far out,but it points up the importance of creating music to fit themood of the picture, not to make a hit single, or even a hit LP.But if the music is honest the public will appreciate it."

Barry is very pleased with the sound quality of the track of"Goldfinger" now out on the United Artists label in the U.S."We recorded it at the CTS Studios in Bayswater in London," hesaid. "The size of the orchestra was the same as we had usedon other Bond scores, but we had a lot of time to plan for thisone. We used the top musicians in London on the date, andeverything came out just right."

What's it like to write music for movies starring such glamor -our females as Honor Blackman, Ursula Andress, Shirley Eaton,and others? "Fun, just fun," said Barry, like any other old rockand roller, who had it made, might say. B.R.

"There's no formula

A modest man. Henry Mancini is a slender, dark haired, modest -talking man from California who, for almost a decade, has repre-sented one of the key and often infrequent links between theworld of good (non -rock) music and the pop singles charts.

He is also a member of that select West Coast music fraternitynot associated with surfing and hot-rodding who have neverthe-less, played an increasingly important role in creating hit popularmusic. Mancini did a number of years of apprenticeship on theCoast movie lots writing background scores for pictures before hiswork as the writer of the "Peter Gunn" TV soundtrack scoremade the music -buying public suddenly aware of television as anew source of pop hits.

Always on scene. Since the mid -'50s arrival of "Peter Gunn," hehas been on the scene almost constantly as a writer of such TVthemes as "Mr. Lucky" and such movie smash scores as "Breakfastat Tiffany's," "A Shot in the Dark," "Pink Panther," "Charade"and most recently, "Dear Heart," and as a recording artist whoseown hit of these tunes have continued to enrich the coffersof RCA Victor Records.

Despite his track record, he says there is no real hit formula."Sure I have a den in my house but I also have three kids. Thereis no such thing as being able to close yourself off completely to bethe great creator," he said during one of his rare recent visitsto Victor's New York headquarters. "Despite the interruptions, Istill do most of my work at home. And I guess I do a lot of thinkingwhen we get up early on a Saturday and drive over to our boat atNewport Beach.

weekend. If I have a my work, it's the boat.No pat formula. "As for writing, there's no pat formula. We

had hits with "Moon River" and "Days of Wine and Roses," andthen there was a loser with "Charade," so we all strike out too.

"One thing really helps me in addition to getting into the denand going to work. That's the habit I've developed of doing a lotof listening. I can't ever really sit down and listen to records forfun. But I hear a lot at home and on the radio just in line withkeeping up to date. I like to know what's going on with the newpeople, writers and artists, who are making themselves heard.You can't sit still in this business or you get lost.

A Johnny Mercer fan. "Johnny Mercer is one of the top popwriters in the country if not the whole world. I know that becauseI've worked with Johnny on two Oscar -winning songs, 'MoonRiver' and 'Wine and Roses.' You know what he does? He spendshours driving around town in his car listening to the radio just tokeep tabs on what's happening.

"I have great respect for this guy. I've often thought of tryinga different tack and getting into Broadway show stuff. If I ever do,I'd want Johnny working with me.

Concerts take time. "I don't really know if I'll ever have enoughtime to really think about Broadway as much as I'd like to. I do agood many concerts. That takes a lot of time flying all overthe country, getting local musicians together for my orchestra.On these we do mostly my own things because I don't thinkanybody would want to pay to watch me conduct a Stravinskyprogram. Others do that a lot better than I could. I enjoy doingthe concerts but then I like to get back to my first love of compos-ing.

"As soon as I go home, I'll be starting on a new picture, The

for writing hits".. .

His sound track method. "I'll start by just seeing the picture. Iprefer to work from the finished product. I know some writers liketo get involved with the producer and the director while the shoot-Mg's going on. I'm not even for showing up on the lot because youwaste a lot of time. You can reach the point where you can't seethe forest for the trees. I just see the picture as often as I have toand work from that.

"Every picture is different. Sometimes there'll be just a basictheme like in `Pink Panther.' It'll run all the way through indifferent settings. In other cases you'll have various individualsongs. Some of these are what we call source music becausethey're actually made by a band or a singer, in other words asource that you see in the picture. In 'Breakfast at Tiffany's,'there were four or five of these in the party scene alone. `MoonRiver' was the same type because it was sung by AudreyHepburn."

Started piano at eight. Mancini has studied music since he waseight, starting at that age by taking piano lessons. "But I onlyconsidered being a concert pianist once-for about 10 minutes onetime-when I got inspired by Art Tatum. As far as pianists go, noone had his stature before or since."

Mancini has other favorite people too. "Jerry Goldsmith is cer-tainly one of the newer Hollywood writers to watch. He's good.So is Johnny Winters. Johnny was the pianist on 'Peter Gunn'and he's been doing some good things of his own lately. I thinkBill Evans is a pianist to watch too.

Plays the flute himself on a date ...

And listens to a playback in the control room ...

Exposed to the rock. "In my house I am also exposed to rock androll. I don't think I'll ever be called on to score a rock and rollmovie because they probably wouldn't want to pay my price butI'm aware of it all, thanks to my kids. I think what the Beatles dothey do well, but it's awfully hard. There's no let-up on the pushand drive and sometimes I have to withdraw, but they have avitality and you can't put them down.

"Their songs are well -constructed and geared right down toteen-agers especially in their language and grammar. I recordedone of them, 'Can't Buy Me Love,' in an album, and I must saythey have a good melodic quality. But they're not really in thegreat songwriting tradition.

Likes Rolling Stones. "The Beach Boys sound like a good sing-ing group with a lot of harmony. And another group that a lot ofpeople put down, the Rolling Stones, have quite a sound too.You get inside the first track or two on their albums and you findsome really authentic sounding copies of American rhythm andblues from the South with their singing and their guitars.

"We certainly have to keep aware of what fellows like this aredoing. I've even introduced a mild rock quality in some of thethings I've done. As I've said, both Johnny Mercer and I do a lotof listening to try to keep up to date on what these people aredoing with popular music.

"I don't see any reason to think, though that there's any basicchange in pop records coming up. I get my share of hits and theydon't rock. You have people like Andy Williams and TonyBennett and Jack Jones getting them too, but there have to be alot more than four or five out of a hundred on the charts beforeyou can say that the good music is taking over."

Mickey & SylviaTogether Again

Legendary team. The legendary teamof Mickey and Sylvia is back togetheragain. After almost four years of work-ing apart, the best-selling duo decided towork together both in the U.S. and Eu-rope for at least six months of the year,starting next week, when they open atNew York's Apollo Theater.

They have obtained for themselves abrand new recording contract from RCAVictor (with a sizable guarantee) andtheir first records on the label will becoming out shortly.

Remarkable run. Mickey and Sylviahad a remarkable run for themselves backin the mid -1950's. Their first recordings,on the now defunct Rainbow label, didwell, but it was on Victor's subsidiarylabel, Groove, that they made a world-wide impact in 1957 and 1958. They soldclose to a million copies of "Love IsStrange," and had a flock of other hits like"Love Will Make You Fail in School,""Dearest," "No Good Lover," and"Walkin' In The Rain."

Their record hits made them into a na-tionally known act, and the attractiveSylvia and the personable Mickey attract-ed huge crowds when they appeared innight clubs or in theaters. They were oneof the few rock acts to ever appear onthe Perry Como TV show.

Broke up team. In the early 1960'sMickey and Sylvia decided to strike outon their own. Sylvia went out as a singleand Mickey went back to composing, ar-ranging and playing on New York re-cording dates. In 1961 Mickey decided tolive in Europe and he and his wife Bar-bara (Baker) moved to Paris. Since thenMickey has been handling recording dates,teaching, arranging and composing. Hehas done most of his dates for the CBSlabel, in Paris. His wife, Barbara, runstheir music publishing firms, Melee, Con-cord and Bonita.

Sylvia meanwhile, has been workingon her own as a single. Her husband, JoeRobinson, who manages her and also han-dles their music firm, has been handlingher bookings. Again and again club own-ers would ask him when Mickey andSylvia would get together again, and tellhim how well they could do if they wereagain a team. One day last November JoeRobinson flew to Paris and talked toMickey-and now the team of Mickeyand Sylvia is back together.

U.S. and overseas. It is expected thatMickey will come to this country to per-form with Sylvia for three or four monthsof the year, and that then they will goto Europe and play three or four monthsof theaters, clubs and TV over there. Allin all, the team seems headed for a busy,

busy future. If, by good fortune theycome up with a big hit-as is highly pos-sible-they'll probably find themselvesworking together a solid 12 months ofevery year, for many years to come.

It Just Gets Later

A couple of unrelateditems in the news recentlyset me to thinking.

First of all, we had a finehour-long TV show withLena Home, a huge or-chestra, and guest JamesMason aired on a New Yorkindependent station. Theshow was produced in Eng-land.

Then we had the distres-sing news of Nat (King)Cole's serious illness.

And I thought that we areindeed being deprived ofgreat entertainment, and, inturn, are seeing great andtalented entertainers de-prived of their full audiencepotential when such as Natand Lena and Ella Fitz-gerald and Sammy DavisJr. and Louis Armstronghave no regular shows onthe tube.

It's true that Cole's firstattempt at a network showbombed for lack of spon-sorship. And it's equallytrue that Lena and Ella andSammy and Louis andSarah Vaughan and PearlBailey and so many deserv-ing Negro entertainers makebig money doing guestshots on all the majorshows.

Not the sameBut a guest shot on Ed

Sullivan or The HollywoodPalace is a far cry from theprestige and exposure thata regular series commands.And there is no Negro en-tertainer who has a regularnetwork series.

Any number could, andthe shows could be as strongand musical as, say, theAndy Williams or the PerryComo or the Dinah Shore,shows were.

It's easy enough to carpabout this and urge thatsomebody take a chance onthe Negro entertainer asstar of a musical series. Butthe answer, inevitably, will

be the same: the South willboycott the show. Or theSouth will boycott the prod-uct.

Well, next time (if ever)that argument comes up, Ihope that someone will urgethe manufacturer to look atthe amount of his sales inthe South and determinewhether it's worth protect-ing at the risk of losinggreat music by great talents.Or ask the stations and/orthe network to determinehow many viewers they'lllose by carrying such ashow.

Better days comingIt's not that simple, of

course. And we are going tohave a good many leanyears before we start tohave the good ones. Butmay I point out a coupleof recent items that indicatethat good days may be com-ing after all:

-Louis Armstrong wasbarred from appearing atthe University of Alabamaover severe protests by thestudent body. The youngpeople wanted him to ap-pear.

-Louis Armstrong ap-pears and cavorts with whitechildren in a charming TVcommercial for a new toydoll.

-Harry Belafonte is set tobe Dinah Shore's sole gueston her next hour-long show.

-Comedian Bill Cosbyplays a straight acting rolewithout reference to colorin an upcoming spy series.

Yes. . . . we're gettingthere but Nat Cole growsolder and Lena Home goesto England to have herhour-long show and wehave three and five minutespots of Ella and Sarah andLouis while we have hourafter hour of Peyton Placeand Many Happy Returnsand Broadside and TheMunsters and like that. . . .

Les Crane Likes The Rock

Les Crane has been look-ing for a gimmick to bolsterratings on his new latenight ABC-TV show, androck and roll may be theanswer. At any rate he hasapparently decided to con-centrate on attracting younglisteners, and, as a result,rock and roll performersare garnering late nightnetwork TV exposure forthe first time.

Jack Paar was strictly amusical comedy man duringhis late night NBC televi-sion period, and his succes-sor, Johnny Carson, prefersjazz. With rare exceptions(i.e. Paul Anka) both menhave always treated teen -oriented music and its starsas something of a joke.

Not a JokeThey are obviously not a

joke to Crane. He presentsthem with positive pride-backed by a fine swingingband and sufficient time tobuild for maximum audi-ence impact.

The talent - accustomedto the usual "do your mil-lion seller and get off fast" -type shuffle on network TV-responds beautifully toCrane's respectful treat-ment. In recent appearanceson the show, such top r. &r. stars as Gene Pitney, TheSupremes and Johnny Nashhave projected a stronger,more vital TV image thanever before.

The Supremes were par-ticularly outstanding lastMonday (4) with threetunes, including, of course,their big hit "Baby Love"and a remarkable renditionof "I Am Woman" from"Funny Girl." The photo-genic lead singer (who canmake it on her own any-

time she wants to) is load-ed with audience appealand visual showmanship.

Phil profiledTycoon of teen: There was

a fascinating article on Phil-les Records 23 year oldPresident, Phil Spector("The First Tycoon ofTeen") in last Sunday'sNew York Herald Tribuneby Tom Wolfe. Spector mayhave been putting Wolfe ona bit and the prose is pur-ple in spots. However, thefeature over all is a haunt-ing portrait of a complexbrilliant man who is con-stantly tortured by his ef-forts to remain true to him-self and his talent in thepop music business.

Spector is bitter aboutmany things, including histreatment in a TV debatewith David Susskind andWilliam B. Williams, ruderemarks about his non -con-formist hairdo, and recorddistributors whom he de-scribed to Wolfe as "cigar -smoking sharpies."

"These characters don'teven pay you until you'vehad three or four hit rec-ords in a row." Spector toldWolfe. "They order the rec-ord and sell them and don'tpay you. They don't payyou because they know theydon't have to . . . They lookat everything as a product.They don't care about thework and sweat you putinto a record. They respectme now because I keepturning out hits, and afterthat they become sort ofhonest - in their own de-cayed way."

Trade ChafferJules Malamud, the man

who runs the ship of the Na-tional Association of RecordMerchandisers, said last weekthat the upcoming NARM Con-vention (February 28 -March4; San Francisco) gives prom-ise of being the biggest inthe association's history. Pres-ent will be the greatest num-ber of regular members everto attend a NARM confab,with a select group of non-members on hand by specialinvitation. There'll be twomornings of business sessionsand two afternoons and a fulladditional day of face-to-facemeetings between rackers andmanufacturers. Numerous so-cial events are also in pros-pect, plus an active daytimeprogram for wives of attend-ing members.

DCP Records, Don Costa'sown label, handled by UnitedArtists, held a series of salesmeetings in Miami last week.The distributors attending thetwo day affair at the EdenRoc Hotel, were shown fournew albums in the line, plusa number of new singles. Pres-ident, Don Costa and sales pro-

This is the time of yearwhen estimates for recordsales in 1964 start coming outof various organizations andresearch departments. The Rec-ord Industry Association ofAmerica (RIAA) will give outits set of figures, based on ex-cise tax returns and other data.Billboard's market researchdepartment will also give outa set of figures, based on itsown research in the field. Andfrom other places, ad agencies,record companies, etc., otherestimates will be cheerfullygiven.

Some will call it an $800million year; more conserva-tive sources will say $750. Nomatter who gives out with thefigures they will be incorrect,for they will be based on re-tail list price, and who buysat list price these days any-way?Guesswork, pure guesswork

Even if the RIAA or Bill-board wanted to it would beimpossible to apply a discountfigure against the estimatedsales at list price for 1964 be-cause no one really knows whatthe discount was on recordssold in 1964. Some stores dis-count, others do not, discountson records vary according totype of material, etc.

Premium records, a greatsource of disc income, are rare-ly included in overall recordsales because they are sold inautomobile stores, gas stationsand via mail. Excise tax figuresare not an accurate reflectionof total sales because manu-facturers pay excise taxes ac-cording to their selling price,not according to list price, andmanufacturer selling pricesvary. Club sales cannot betruly estimated because clubfigures are secret, and so on.

In other words, there arefew reliable indicators for es-timating the retail value ofrecords sold in any given year.

However there should be away to estimate how the rec-ord business does from oneyear to another, whether busi-ness is up or down, stagnantor on a plateau. There is away-on condition that therather absurd secrcey that sur-rounds figures in the modern

record business did or is do-ing is to obtain production fig-ures from the nation's recordpressing plants. This is the sys-tem used by most industries,i.e.: the automobile industry.Every month General Motors,Chrysler, Ford, American, etc.reveal their production figureson their models, from the Lin-coln to the Rambler. They areavailable for perusal in theNew York Times' business sec-tion by anyone who buys thepaper.

If production figures forLP's, 45's and small 33's and78's were sent in to the RIAAeach month by all pressingplants, large and small, thenwe would know what was hap-pening in our industry. Itwouldn't be necessary to breakdown these figures by companysince all that is needed is theoverall production, not a labelby label inventory.

It's true that not all of therecords pressed ever leave acompany's warehouse. It is alsotrue that plants roll off a lotof Christmas product in thesummer, and thus a July's pro-duction could be all out of pro-portion to the amount of rec-ord sold that month.

These are of little matterhowever. Production figuresfrom pressing plants wouldgive the industry an accuratepicture of record output eachmonth, enabling the industry tocompare production on amonth by month basis, andeventually, when enough timehad passed, on a year by yearbasis. Then the research or-ganizations, ad agencies, etc.could do all the projectingthey wished, on the so-calledbasis of "list" price or onwholesale price or whatever.We all at least would knowfrom whence they derivedtheir figures.

It might be worthwhile forthe RIAA to inaugurate theproject of getting monthly pro-duction figures from pressingplants throughout the countrystarting fairly soon. Thismonth maybe. After all it is aNew Year, and it is bright fornew, valuable projects.

Decca-Coral LP'sDecca-Coral Records has re-

New VeeJay SetsVeeJay put out one of its

most extensive album releaseslast week with 26 new pack-ages hitting the market, andsix others - now being cut-due for release before the endof the month.

Label president RandallWood said the new materialcovers numerous markets withseven pop LP's, six in the gos-pel area, four in the firm's"Great Moments Preserved"series, five in the new jazzseries under the direction ofrecently appointed jazz con-sultant, Leonard Feather, anda new series, commencing withfour albums consisting of in-strumental versions of vocalhits by such well-known art-ists as Elvis Presley, AndyWilliams, Bobby Vinton andPeter, Paul and Mary.

Pickwick Sales UpPickwick International, ma-

jor producer of budget discs,enjoyed a 29 per cent increasein earnings last year and seta new high in gross sales dur-ing the first six months of fis-cal 1964, according to presi-dent Cy Leslie. The companyis now 11 years old and dur-ing that time has shown in-creases in sales and earningseach year.

The firm chalks up its fav-orable position to its new Hill-top $1.98 line of country al-bums, a series of special pack-ages, music publishing activi-ties and to its budget (99 cent)LP lines.

Leslie looks forward to con-tinuing increases in the newyear, particularly in view ofthe firm's contract to provide"picture sound" programs forGeneral Electric's new "show'n tell" phono-viewer unit forkiddies. The $29.95 deviceshows color film strips in timeto lyrics and music on recordsfor the four to 12 age group.

New Atlantic LP'sAtlantic and Atco Records

have released thirteen albumsbetween them for January. Onthe Atlantic label are two re-leases following up currentsingles hits by Joe Tex ("HoldWhat You've Got") and DonCovay ("Mercy!"). Ben E.King is represented on Atcowith the album "Seven Let-ters."

of WSM, and his wife went tothe Grand Ole Opry the Sat-urday night following Christ-mas Day, anticipating that, asan aftermath of the Christmasholiday, they'd be among a fewhundred persons present. Totheir surprise they found theGrand Ole Opry House filledwith 3300 persons and the SROsigns out.

Robert E. Cooper, generalmanager of WSM radio andOpry director, who was recent-ly elevated to the position ofvice-president of WSM, re-marked to friends that hethought this was a significantproof of how country musicand the Opry have grown. Onthe corresponding date of theprevious year, his figures showthat 2172 attended the Opry.Cooper also disclosed for thefirst time that he expected dur-ing 1965 to give further pushto the Opry's delayed broad-casts which during the lastyear have climbed to include400 stations.

"There's no way to estimatethe audience of these 400weekly broadcasts of the Oprywith the audience of a Satur-day night performance," hesaid, "but one can see it's un-doubtedly tremendous whenone thinks that the delayedbroadcasts originate in stationsall the way from Alaska toNova Scotia, and cover the bigcities like San Francisco andothers. Through these delayedbroadcasts and the Opry itself,country music's exposure andappreciation has broadened toa point never reached before."

The trouble with New Year'sresolutions is that they're soquickly broken. Mary Reeves,president of Jim Reeves En-terprises, knows this, and soshe's not making any seriousones. But Mary came up lastweek with an apt quotationwhich the music industry couldwell adopt and it might sellrecords. It's "Come Alive andJive in '65." If Mary wereasked to add another mean-ingful line she might haveadded:

"That's The 'Way to MakeOur Business Thrive."

Several weeks ago we issued a recordcaned "YOU'D BETTER GO" byCHANCE EDEN. CHANCE is new onthe record scene, and we had the usualtough time getting the few plays news -corners get. We had faith in the record,and asked our distributors and promo-tion people for an extra push. on thisone. As they started to cooperate, theyran right into the Christmas holidays.Now Christmas is nice for children andfamily reunions and sleigh -bells ring-ing in the snow . . . but it's murder ona new artist out with his first record.So . . . "YOU'D BETTER GO" lookedlike it was going fast. We almost gaveup.

Then, last week, with no extra pushon our part, the record seemed to begetting a second chance. Two disefock-eys from different cities reported theywere getting listener requests for"YOU'D BETTER GO" by CHANCEEDEN. A distributor called in to seeif CHANCE was available for hops. Hewas starting to get calls.
