Cries from the Heart: Searching the Psalms

“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish

one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit,

singing to God with gratude in your hearts.”

Colossians 3:16

This Sunday we will begin a new sermon series focused on the Old Testament

Psalter. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German theologian captured in Nazi Germany,

once said that, “The Psalter is the prayer book of Jesus Christ in the truest sense

of the word. He prayed the Psalter and now it has become his prayer for all

%me.” The psalms are prayers – prayers that are genuine, raw, unedited, and

filled with emo/on. We are reminded of our humanity when we read them; for

in them we find the realness of human life as we seek to follow God. Not all

psalms are joyful (Praise the Lord, O my soul…), and not all psalms are lament

(My God, my God why have you forsaken me…). In fact, we find that every psalm

is a cry from the heart; a cry of emo/on and experience that flows from the

depths of our hearts at differing stages of our lives.

This fall we will explore a number of them that we are familiar with, and others

not so familiar. We will open the greatest prayer book of all /me seeking to hear

God’s voice in the midst of our joy, our pain, and even in our apathy. The Psalms

are a gi9 and a comfort to us as individuals and to us as the people of God.

While we will not look at every psalm in the psalter, there is an opportunity for

us to read one psalm per day devo/onally as we join together this fall to hear

God’s word fresh to us each Sunday. I encourage you to try this and to allow God

to speak to you in the days ahead.

Grace and Peace,

CLASS # SESSION 1 09/07/16 – 10/05/16 ADULT AND COLLEGE CLASSES

1) CRIES FROM THE HEART: THE PSALMS: Jonathan Lehman & Gary Burke – Join us for two five-week sessions where we will explore some of the Psalms that Pastor Jeff will be preaching on this fall. There will be some guided instruction, however this class will primarily be conversational. We will uncover multiple meanings and interpretations that lead us to a better understanding of God and God’s call in our lives. This will be an excellent way to prepare for Sunday worship!

2) DAVE RAMSEY’S FINANCIAL PEACE: Melissa Bryan & Bill Bailey – Dave Ramsey and his teaching team will walk you through the basics of budgeting, dumping debt, planning for the future, and much more. This class will be a great way to share ideas, be encouraged, and stay motivated. One Financial Peace University membership per family is all you need to get started in the class. (Description from Ramsey’s website). The cost of this investment is $90 for your kit that includes online access to all lessons, member workbook, Dave’s Ramsey’s Complete guide to Money, Envelope System, Budget Forms Folder, Progress Poster and other Resources. (see page 7 for more info)

3) MISSION OF JESUS – Triumph God’s Kingdom in a World in Chaos: Kay Stacy – In the region of Galilee, Jesus revealed the power of God's Kingdom and His role as King. The "good news" of Hissha-lom sent ripples through Israel - stirring the hearts of new followers and challenging the rule of an em-pire. In this 14th volume of the That The World May Know ® film series, Biblical historian and teacher Ray Vander Laan guides viewers on Jesus' path through Israel - while exploring the rule of ancient Rome - and reveals how God brought triumph in a world of chaos (Description from thattheworldmayknow.com).

4) KNARTHEX KNITTERS: Julia Pedigo The Knarthex Knitters usually get together for fellowship in knitting and crocheting, sharing knitting tips, patterns, yarn, and joys and concerns of members of the church family. We have a wonderful, relaxing time.

5) OFFICER TRAINING: Jeff Smith – Training of the Elders and Deacons elect

7) DAVE RAMSEY’S FINANCIAL PEACE: Melissa Bryan & Bill Bailey – See description above.

8) INTERRUPTED: When Jesus wrecks your comfortable: Kelley Wilson –Interrupted follows Jen Hatmaker’s messy journey through life and church and into living on mission. Snatching her from the grip of her consumer life, God began asking her questions like, “What is really the point of My Church? What have I really asked of you?” She was far too busy doing church than being church, even as a pastor’s wife, an author of five Christian books, and a committed believer for 26 years. She discovered she had missed the point. Christ brought Jen and her family to a place of living on mission by asking them tough questions, leading them through Scripture, and walking together with them on the path. Interrupted invites readers to take a similar journey (Description from Jen Hatmaker’s website).

9) KNARTHEX KNITTERS: Julia Pedigo – see description above 10) OFFICER TRAINING: Jeff Smith – Training of the Elders and Deacons elect

What a joy it was to serve God and our neighbors during Gathering to Serve 2016! Thanks to all of the project leaders, there was a meaningful task for volunteers of all ages to do. Close to 100 people came together Saturday to worship God while:

• splitting wood at the Wood Lot so others will be able to heat their homes this winter • making birthday, get well, holiday and thinking of you cards for shut-ins and college students • painting flower pots, planting flowers, making cards and taking all of this along with smiles and hugs to the

residents at Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living • making cat toys for the Watauga Humane Society • patching holes in the parking lot of the Hunger Coalition, emptying and taking inventory of their large trailer,

sorting and bagging potatoes, checking the dates on food containers • sharing time with shut-ins while singing some favorite hymns • packing blessing bags for the homeless and goody bags for ASU students and students away at school • pressure washing and repairing a deck, installing lights at a neighbor’s house • helping families get school supplies at the Back 2 School Festival • helping new ASU international students get what they need for school • making and serving lunch for the G2S volunteers • serving dinner at the Hospitality House • sharing a meal and the Lord’s Supper

Pastor Jeff shared with us that the prophet Micah reminds the church of God’s will for us. God has already shown us what is good, and calls us as His people to follow in His ways, doing justice, and loving mercy as we walk in humility with God each and every day.

As we look to the future, Jeff challenged us with 3 words… Do - Love – Walk
