Department of Commerce – UG, under the aegis of IQAC of Government Ramnarayan Chellaram College

of Commerce and Management conducted One Week International Faculty Development Program on

“Legal, Ethical and Social Issues of Digital Age – Stay Online Stay Safe” from 1st September 2021 to 8th

September 2021. An Internal Committee was set up for this purpose consisting of Dr. Shobha.N.S., Smt.

Sudha Madhwaraj, Dr. K. Jayalakshmamma, Dr. Bharathi, Dr. Anitha, Dr. Prakash, Dr. Nataraj, Dr. Muneer

Ahmed, Dr. Waseeha Firdose, Dr. Basavaraj, Sri Venkatesh, Smt. Tina Cherry, Dr. Sudhamani.

An Advisory Board was also set up with the consent of Internal Committee. The members of Advisory

Board were Dr. B G Bhaskar, Principal, Vivekananda First Grade College, Dr. Ajitha Narendran, Head,

Department of Commerce, MGGC, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Prof. Lalat Indu Mishra, Siksha O

Anusandhan University, Odisha and Dr. Reeta Sony A L, Assistant Professor, School of Social Sciences,

Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The topic “Legal, Ethical and Social Issues of Digital Age – Stay Online Stay Safe” was selected by

Principal and all the members of the Committee. Brochure was finalized and Resource Persons from

Delhi, Odisha, United Kingdom, USA, Saudi Arabia and Canada were identified. The Resource Persons

gave their valuable suggestions and topics for each session were finalized and scheduled as follows:

Telegram Group was created on 18th August 2021, https://t.me/joinchat/fW0Hf2OLfsU4YmE1, for all the

members of FDP and participants to post events and schedules.

Participants from all over the world registered for the program, there were total of 1,297 registrations

from Karnataka, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Andhra

Pradesh, Assam, Maharashtra, UP, J & K, Telangana, Gujarat, West Bengal, Punjab, Nagaland,

Uttarakhand, Puducherry, Kerala, Goa and from United Kingdom, Canada, USA, Nigeria, Philippines,

Srilanka, Algeria, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bangladesh, Pakistan. On an average 300

participants attended through Zoom link and 600 through you tube live due to network issues.

Dr. C N Ashwathnarayan, Honourable Higher Education Minister, Government of Karnataka, Sri M D

Sharath, Superintendent of Police, Cyber Crime Division, CID, Mr. Manjesh Muthappa, Engineer, Visa

Immigration Department, Florida was the Chief Guest and Key note speaker for the Inaugural Program

held on 1st September 2021.

Sri. S N Balachandra, IAS, Chief Administrative Officer, Department of Collegiate Education, Smt.

Shubhamangala Sunil, CEO, GOCYBEX, and Prof. Sachitha Bopaiah were Chief Guests and Guest of

telegram group and also was mailed to all the registered participants. Proceedings of Program is as

PROCEEDINGS OF PROGRAM:

DAY 1

The International Faculty Development Program started with Invocation by Dr. Sudhamani, Department

of Hindi, on 1st September 2021 at 2 PM IST. Dr. B Chandrashekara, Principal gave the welcome address.

Sir welcomed Chief Guests of Inaugural function Dr. Ashwathnarayan, Honourable Higher Education

Minister, Government of Karnataka, Sri M D Sharath, Superintendent of Police, Cyber Crime Division,

CID, Mr. Manjesh Muthappa, Engineer, Visa Immigration Department, Florida. Dr. Shobha N S,

Organizing Secretary gave prelude of IFDP. Dr. Anitha and Dr. Bharathi were the Moderators for Day 1.

Dr. C N Ashwathnarayan, Honourable Higher Education Minister, IT & BT,

Science & Technology, Skill Development gave the Inaugural Address. Sir

appreciated the initiative taken by Department of Commerce and he said

that this topic is far reaching and very relevant for today. He also said that

how much ever we do on this issue is less, because the topic is so dynamic

and if we come new solutions they come out with new problems. Sir

emphasized on promoting ‘Digital Literacy’ in National Education Program

by making this literacy mandatory and creating awareness and strengthen

Cyber Laws and Cyber Security.

Sri M D Sharath, Superintendent of Police, Cyber Crime Division, CID, was

the Key note Speaker. He explained about various issues relating to 5G, the

protocols which needs to be adopted, the standardization, and how ethical

and legal concerns need to be deliberated. He drew attention on Google

Glass and how anti social elements starts recording and uses this recording

and posts it and use it against. He said that technology is a double edged

sword. If it is given to bad people how they use it negative way and vice

versa. He gave a very good example of a controlled pace maker installed in

individual’s heart and how it is controlled by anti social element. He emphasized that lot of unwanted

things like child pornography, hijacking of online platforms or posting unwanted things in such platforms,

or drone attacks.

Sri. Manjesh Magnet Gowda, an Engineer from Florida was another Chief

Guest and he emphasized on leader ship skills and qualities that will

positively impact on community country and world at large. He spoke

about International Digital Ethics. He discussed about digital ethics

cosmetics, ecological sustainability, how self regulation can be used in AI.

Prof. Lakshman Kulgod, HOD, Department of Commerce, also addressed the gathering. He

congratulated the organizers for choosing relevant topic. Dr. B Chandrashekara delivered presidential

remarks. Inaugural session was concluded by Vote of Thanks by Dr. Jayalakshmamma.

Dr. Waseeha Firdose introduced Prof. Avadhani, Resource Person of

Technical Session. Prof. Avadhani spoke about Different dimensions of

Cyber Crime. He explained about various types of Cyber Crime, Cyber

Security and various consequences of lack of cyber security. He explained

about 1st Generation to 5th Generation issues and various viruses existing

and Anti-Virus software. He said how anti-virus software will give rise to

one more virus forcing us to buy their software. Sir spoke about various types of hackers, Trojan Horses.

Sir explained all issues taking 7 case studies. The Question and Answer session was also there hosted by

Dr. Bharathi and Dr. Bharathi proposed Vote of Thanks for Day 1. There were 250 participants in Zoom

meeting and 500 participants in you tube live. An online feedback link was shared at the end of the

session and 769 responses were received from the participants.

Day 2 started with introduction and welcome by Dr. Waseeha Firdose, Department of

International Business. Resource Person was Dr. Mala Sharma, Lawyer, Researcher and

Academician, University of Surrey, UK, and madam

spoke about Governance, Regulations and Security in

Cyber Space. Quoting some good examples of Cyber

Attack on Ukraine’s Power Grid Attack, Wannacry

Ransomware Cyber Attack, Cosmos Bank Cyber Attack,

password leakage scam, data processor cyber security

attack. The objectives of this session were to appreciate

the pervasiveness of Cyber Attack, Understand the legal

framework of cyberspace regulation in India and to

consider inclusion of cyber security in curriculum.

There were over 800 participants in Zoom Meeting and

YouTube Live. Feedback link was shared and 99% of the participants gave a very good response

about the topic and resource person’s knowledge and content. More than 82% of the responses

rated high about the arrangements made by the institution and more than 83% of the responses

rated high about resource person knowledge, application and presentation quality. The session

was concluded with Vote of Thanks by Smt Tina Cherry, Department of Commerce.

Day 3 started with introduction and welcome by Dr. Basavaraj, Department of English. Resource

Person was Dr. Ghousia Khatoon, Associate Professor, Princess Nourah University, Kingdom of

Saudi Arabia, Visiting Professor at Karnataka college

of Management & Science. Quoting some good

examples of Cyber Bullying. Madam explained about

Flaming, Cyber Stalking, Denigration, Masquerading,

Trickery or Outing, Exclusion and Evil Effects of Cyber

Bullying. There were over 850 participants in Zoom

Meeting and YouTube Live. Feedback link was shared

and 99% of the participants gave a very good

response about the topic and resource person’s

knowledge and content. More than 82% of the

responses rated high about the arrangements made by the institution and more than 83% of the

Jayalakshmamma, Department of Commerce. Resource

Person was Dr. Reeta Sony, Assistant Professor, Centre for

Studies in Science Policy, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal

Nehru University, New Delhi. Madam discussed about Data

Protection: Legal and Social Issues. Also art directed at the

themes of surveillance and resistance, technical resistance,

Blocking 3rd party cookies and Ad blockers were covered.

about whether there is any possibility to design ethics in

Resource Person was Balaji Sunderarajan, Principal Engineer, Cisco Systems, San Jose, California.

Sir discussed about Importance of patenting in Digital Age and

how it is important for us to understand what is patenting and

the process involved in patenting. There were over 850

participants in Zoom Meeting and YouTube Live. Question and

Answer session was also successfully done. Feedback link was

shared and 99% of the participants gave a very good response

about the topic and resource person’s knowledge and

content. More than 83% of the responses rated high about

the arrangements made by the institution and more than 84% of the responses rated high about

resource person knowledge, application and presentation quality. The session was concluded with

Resource Person was Ravi Upadhya, Software Security

Manager, University of British Columbia, Canada. Sir discussed

about E Banking and Security in Digital Era. He covered E

Banking Services, M Banking, and threats involved and also

how to overcome these threats. Question and Answer session

was also successfully done. Feedback link was shared and

99% of the participants gave a very good response about the

topic and resource person’s knowledge and content. More

than 84% of the responses rated high about the arrangements

made by the institution and more than 83% of the responses rated high about resource person

knowledge, application and presentation quality. The session was concluded with Vote of Thanks

Valedictory session held on 8th September 2021 at 1 PM

started with Invocation by Dr. Sudhamani, Department of

Hindi, followed by Introduction and Welcome of guests by

Prof. Sudha Madhwaraj, Department of Commerce.

She introduced Sri S N Balachandra, IAS, CAO, Department of Collegiate Education, Sir was

honored with bouquet and memento by Principal Dr. B Chandrashekar in Principal’s Chamber

which was effectively taken care by Dr. Jayalakshmamma, Dr. Bharathi and Dr. Anitha.

The session was followed by Executive Summary where

entire 7 Days session highlights were briefed by Dr. Shobha

N S, Organizing Secretary, Department of Commerce.

One more chief guest Smt. Shubhamangala Sunil, CEO,

GOCYBEX was also welcomed and introduced.

Shubhamangala Madam spoke about Cyber Security issues

and how we are dependent on technology and how

responsible we as teachers should be to protect our future

generation.

Prof. Sachitha Bopiah, Guest of Honour. She started with

saying “Alone we can do little but together we can do

more” also spoke about various issues of Digital Age and

the entire International FDP. The session was followed by

“PARTICIPANT’S REFLECTIONS” where participants were

allowed to speak about IFDP. Everyone expressed very

positive feedback and gratitude explaining the immense

knowledge of all resource persons and systematic way of organizing the FDP. Due to the time

constraint only few were given opportunity to speak. Reflections were given by Dr. Manoj Louis,

GFGC, Mangalore, Dr. Francis, GFGC, K R Puram, Bangalore, Christ University, Ms. Keerthana, Dr.

V Anand, Assam and Ganga Naidu Mandala.

Principal Dr. B Chandrashekhar, gave the presidential

remarks discussing on his experiences on Cyber Security. He

stated how to create awareness in faculty by organizing such

programs. He congratulated the entire team IFDP to organize

such a program. He mentioned about the word “CHANGE”

and how we have to inculcate change to be successful.

Referring to the feedback given by participants sir applauded

the entire team for making this Program a grand success.

There was a “VIRTUAL PHOTO SESSION” where all participants were requested to switch on their

videos. All members made this virtual photo session a success by cooperating with the organizers.

The Valedictory program was concluded by Vote of Thanks proposed by Smt. Tina Cherry,

Department of Commerce, and the entire session’s moderators were Prof. Sudha Madhwaraj and

Dr. Shobha N S. Post which feedback link was shared and link for Certificate with a quiz consisting

of 25 questions was posted to all registered participants through mail and telegram group. The

team also took care of sending the certificates personally to many of them who had technical

issues. Once the link was sent Certificate of Participation was sent to all participants of FDP who

participated through Zoom Platform and watched videos through YouTube. Also Certificate of

Appreciation was also sent to all the Resource Persons through Post and Chief Guests were

honored personally at their place by the Organizing Secretary.

The Organizing Secretary places on record heartfelt thanks to Principal of Government R C College

of Commerce and Management Dr. B Chandrashekhar who has been the main pillar behind the

success of this FDP. Gratefulness from us for our most wonderful principal sir for every single

effort that he always made in the very direction of improving the education standards of our

institution.
