Archdiocese of the Military Did you know we have an Archdiocese of the Military? Did you know that ALL Catholic Chaplains, no matter what branch of the military, are responsible to the Archdiocese? All of our Catholic military men and women are served by these Chaplains and in many cases military Catholic communities have been formed to serve the families of our military men and women. Current statistics indicate 25% of our military force is Catholic, and 8% of the entire Chaplain Corps are priests. What a challenge! Every year the RCIA class, both children and adults, commits to this worthy cause as a service project. This Sunday, December 20th, after all Masses, representatives from this year’s class will be outside accepting donations to help defray the cost of so few Chaplains serving so many. Come meet the men and women of this year’s RCIA class, on a journey to full inclusion into the Catholic faith, and make a donation to the Archdiocese of the Military. Thank You, Tom Haas

Operation Shoebox Here is a great way to spread the holiday cheer within our own community! Operation Shoebox is a program to fill shoeboxes with basic necessities for the homeless men who congregate near the Civic Center in Santa Ana. We will be asking that the shoeboxes have a t-shirt, underwear, socks and a sweet treat. They will need medium and large sizes (all items in each shoebox should be the same size). Please wrap the boxes in Christmas paper so the boxes may be opened without tearing the paper. The shoeboxes should be delivered to the church after the Masses the weekend of December 19th and 20th. If you should have any questions, please call Diane Sixsmith at 949-587-0704.

Dickens’ Village There was one item from the Octoberfiesta Raffle that we held onto specifically for the Christmas Season; a beautiful Dickens’ Village by Department 56. For a chance to win this item, raffle tickets are available after the 8:30am, 10:15am and 12pm Masses. The drawing will be held December 20th. All Octoberfiesta Raffle earnings go to the patio fund. $5 for two tickets, or $10 for five tickets.

JMJ

14 December 2015 My Dearest Parish Family,

God be with us always.

I went for a little shopping last week and after each transaction I was greeted, “Happy Holidays!” I always respond with “Merry Christmas!” In my mind I am thinking: “Well my dear, you would not be doing business if God did not do His.” Let us be courageous enough to share what this season really means to us.

God’s pre-occupation or “business” if I may call it such: is His Absolute and Tender love for us, for His creation. When this relationship was rudely severed by the disobedience of the first human beings – our Loving Father made the Promise of His Only Son to become a human being to save us. This is the Emmanuel . . . “the God who is with us.” It is His coming we prepare for and anticipate this Season of Advent.

In His birth, we have reason to rejoice and celebrate because we are redeemed. Finally, God communicates to us through His Son in words heard and actions felt by the community gathered around Him.

Our Parish is also receiving a gift this Christmas through a new and improved Santiago De Compostela Website which will have a “soft-launch” on December 25. We hope that it will foster better communication and promote the ministry and

services we offer for God’s people. Please take time to visit it.

From our hearts to each one of you, Fr. Greg and I, would like to say A Meaningful, Joyful Christmas and a Blessed New Year to all. God bless and take care. Love and prayers,

Fr. Thomas Paul K. Naval

Padre Thomas Paul K. Naval

Today’s Readings First Reading — From you, Bethlehem, shall come forth one who is to be ruler in Israel. (Micah 5:1-4a). Psalm — Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved (Psalm 80). Second Reading — By Christ doing the will of God, we have been consecrated (Hebrews 10:5-10). Gospel — “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb” (Luke 1:39-45). Treasures From Our Tradition Many of our most treasured traditions link the liturgy of the church with the hearth of the home. The food on the table at certain feasts and fasts helps to extend the mystery into everyday life. Tonight, for example, many families of Italian heritage, especially those with links to the south of Italy, will settle down to the “Feast of the Seven Fishes,” or La Vigilia. It is a command performance for the whole family, as the saying goes: Natale con I tuui, Pasqua conchi vuoi, or “Christmas with your family, Easter with whomever you wish.” Seven different fish, some say one for each day of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem, others say one for each sacrament, or one for each day of creation, are served. Eel and shrimp, lobster and crab, calamari, pasta with clam sauce, flounder and hake all abound, but most especially baccala, dried salted cod. Why? Many say that it is a way to pay homage to the beasts of the stable who witnessed the holy birth and relinquished their manger to make way for God. Tonight, if someone asks you to “pass the shrimp,” you’ll be able to shed a little light on a menu that is a delicious treasure in our tradition! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
