2010 Annual Report

Message from our CEO“Home is where the heart is!” As we gather with families, spend time in easy chairs, and prepare favorite meals, the space we call “home” encircles us, brings us comfort, makes us secure. Home warms our hearts.

The homeowners we serve love their homes, too, even as those homes fall into disre-pair. So many of our neighbors, though, live with the underlying fear of losing their homes as life’s circumstances of age, illness or disability deplete the resources that otherwise could be invested in maintenance and repair. At Rebuilding Together Metro Denver, we believe that everyone deserves a safe and healthy home. We focus spe-cifically on homeowners in extreme need, and who are among the more vulnerable in our communities – seniors, those with disabilities, and veterans. RTMD brings needed repairs and safety upgrades to these homes through the collective power of the dozens of business partners and hundreds of volunteers who share their dollars, talents and generosity for the benefit of these grateful homeowners.

The year brought the incredibly inspiring stories that serve as fuel for our Staff and Board of Directors so we may deliver our best every day; that draw businesses and in-dividuals to donate time, money and supplies to everyday folks who get the chance to stay in their homes safely; that attract volunteers from every walk of life to spend the day hammering, installing handrails, laying flooring with strangers who become friends.

So, in spite of the difficult economy in 2010, RTMD demonstrated once again its lead-ership in the community and sound stewardship, serving over 600 homeowners, lever-aging every dollar raised to create at least three dollars worth of real value, and forming dozens of new partnerships throughout metro Denver.

I am proud to serve with so many remarkable people whose passion for our mission of making homes safe and healthy shines through every day. RTMD Program Highlights

Rebuilding Days

RTMD repairs and revitalizes homes of low income older adults, people with disabilities and veterans through their Rebuilding Day program. This program rehabilitated dozens of homes and nonprofit facilities, serving hundreds of ho-meowners, family members, and community members. There were over 30 orga-nizations who participated as sponsors providing 1,310 volunteers for a total of 21,900 hours of labor.

A Home for All SeasonsRTMD sponsored A Home for All Seasons, a program that provided minor home repair at no cost to the homeowners, allowing families to be safe, healthy and independent, and to remain in their homes and neighborhoods. Repairs were made to 93 homes helping over 175 homeowners and their families with safety modifications including grab bars and handrails, plumbing and furnace repairs, energy upgrades and other essential home repairs.

Emergency Home RepairsRTMD sponsored the Emergency Repair program, which helped low income homeowners with home repairs of a more urgent nature, including repairs to burst or blocked pipes, furnace and water heater repairs, electrical problems, gas leaks and plumbing repairs. The program completed repairs to 194 homes help-ing over 300 homeowners and their families with essential work for a safe and healthy environment.

Sponsoring Rebuilding Together Metro Denver (RTMD) provided caring compa-nies, foundations and service organizations a rewarding partnership with a non-profit that has a long, successful history of revitalizing neighborhoods in Denver, Adams, Arapahoe, Jefferson, Douglas, Broomfield and Boulder counties.

All sponsorship opportunities helped low-income families remain in their homes in a safe and healthier environment through home repairs and modifications. Specific business and corporate sponsorships offered opportunities for team building and leadership development experiences for employees and family members. 2010 sponsorships also included event and other financial support that kept costs down and funds flowing to services.

Foundation & Government Funders

Support from private foundations and monies from government programs are critical for capacity building, technical assistance, new services and for general operating support. These funders significantly impacted the mission of RTMD and the ability to help the aging and disabled homeowners in our community.

Business and Community Supporters

Individuals, companies and professional associations lent their time, skills and re-sources to benefit older adults, veterans, and people living with disabilities, mak-ing an impactful difference every day in their community.Professional plumbers, roofers and all-around handy people volunteered thou-sands of hours of time in 2010, along with hundreds of local businesses that donated materials and supplies for repair and safety modification projects. This work ensured that homeowners remained safe and healthy in their own homes.

Volunteers

Volunteers

Volunteers are the heart of RTMD services and provide both skilled and non-skilled labor on projects all year long. They are general handymen, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, masons, administrative, and those who wish to be in-volved in charitable work. They are caring, compassionate, and have a desire to help homeowners in need and give back to the community in which they live and work.

Skilled & House Captains

The House Captain and the Skilled Captain work in partnership, along with the RTMD staff, to ensure a successful completion of a Rebuilding Day project. The House Captain is responsible for the aspects relating to volunteer recruitment, coordination, communication and support of the volunteer team. The Skilled Captain is responsible for the planning and execution of technical aspects of the Scope of Work including materials and supplies.

Handy Volunteers

Handy volunteers accomplish day-to-day repairs including doors and locks, floor-ing and plumbing, as well as safety improvements such as ramps and bathroom modifications.

Special Events of 2010

Rebuild 1000

The Rebuild 1000 program was a nationwide Rebuilding Together initiative that rebuilt 1000 homes and nonprofit facilities in the Gulf. Ten loyal RTMD volun-teers participated again in 2010 the week of Sunday, February 20 through Sat-urday, February 26. These volunteers worked alongside those who have been rebuilding since the hurricanes and floods in 2005 and have returned to New Orleans for the previous three years.

2010 National Rebuild Days

Saturday, April 24 and Saturday, October 2 were designated National Rebuilding Days. Volunteers across the country, including hundreds partnered with RTMD, rebuilt, renovated, modified, and repaired homes and community centers, ben-efiting thousands of homeowners in desperate need of assistance.

Summer Wine Tasting Event

The 2nd Annual event was held on Thursday, August 4, 2010 at the Denver Design Center and was attended by 95 guests. The title financial sponsor was McLain Financial; wine to taste was donated by Corks the Wine Store and their distributors; food was donated by Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy.

Miniature Golf Tournament

RTMD hosted the 1st Annual Home on the Green Miniature Golf Tournament held at Colorado Journey, attended by 75 people.
