Welcome The Love of Jesus Christ is with you. And also with you.

The Mighty One has done great things! Holy is God’s Name! The Light of the World is coming. With Mary, our spirits rejoice in God our Savior. God’s mercy endures from generation to generation for those who are in awe of God. The proud, the rich, the mighty no longer have power over us. The lowly are lifted up, and the hungry are satisfied. We see the light of God shining over the land. We light a fourth candle in anticipation of the wondrous birth. We will open our hearts that Love may have a place to dwell.

The Bidding Prayer Beloved in Christ, at this Christmastide let it be our care and delight to hear again the message of

the angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which has come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger.

Therefore let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience to the glorious redemption brought to us by this Holy Child.

But first, let us pray for the needs of the whole world, including those who have asked for the prayers of the church (Prayer Cards). For peace on earth and goodwill among all people and for unity within the church he came to build.

And because this would rejoice his heart, let us remember in his name, the poor and helpless, the cold, the hungry, and the oppressed; the sick and those who mourn, the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; all those who do not know the Lord Jesus or who have grieved his heart of love. Lastly, let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us on another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made Flesh, and with whom in the Lord Jesus we are one forevermore.

These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the Throne of Heaven in the words which Christ himself has taught us:

First Lesson: (9:30) Clint Janes (11:00) John Johnson

God announces in the Garden of Eden that the seed of woman shall bruise the serpent's head. [Genesis 3:8-15]

And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord among the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?" And Adam said, "I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, and I hid myself." And the Lord said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree which I commanded you not to eat?" And Adam said, "The woman you gave to be with me gave me some of the fruit of the tree, and I ate of it." And the Lord God said unto the woman, "What is this that you have done?," and the woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate of it." And the Lord God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, you are cursed above all livestock and above every wild beast of the field. Upon your belly shall you go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed: He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel."

Second Lesson: (9:30) Floyd Baker (11:00) Lauren Davis

Christ's birth and kingdom are foretold by Isaiah. [Isaiah 9:2, 6-7] The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; they who dwell in the land of the

shadow of death, on them has the light shined. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be on his shoulders; and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom establishing it with judgment and justice from that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Third Lesson: Rev. Tonya Douce

Malachi foretells Christ's role as purifier. [Malachi 3:1-4] "Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me. And the Lord, whom

you seek, will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight. Behold, he is coming," says the LORD of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming? And who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fuller's soap. He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he shall purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver so that they may offer to the LORD offerings in righteousness. Then shall the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasing to the LORD as in days of old and as in former years.

Fourth Lesson: (9:30) Hannah Williams (11:00) Kasey White

The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary. [Luke 1:26-38] In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, to a

virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, a descendant of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in to her and said, "Hail, you who are highly favored. The Lord is with you: blessed are you among women." And when she saw him, she was troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Fear not, Mary, for you have

found favor with God. Behold, you shall conceive in your womb and bring forth a son and shall call his name Jesus. He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God shall give to him the throne of his father David; and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end." Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, seeing that I am a virgin?" And the angel answered and said to her, 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the holy one who shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God. And your cousin, Elizabeth, has also conceived a son in her old age. She is in her sixth month who was called barren. For with God nothing is impossible." And Mary said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

Fifth Lesson: (9:30) Glenn McLoughlin (11:00) David Bissette

St. Luke tells of the birth of Jesus. [Luke 2:1-7] And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world

should be registered. (This was the first census made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be registered, everyone to his town of origin. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of Nazareth, into Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and lineage of David); to be registered with Mary to whom he was engaged who was great with child. So it came to pass that while they were there, the days were completed that she should deliver her child. And she brought forth her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The Offertory Choir and Congregation: Hymn 217 "Away in a Manger"

Sixth Lesson: (9:30) Max Hollis (11:00) Andrew Quinonez

The shepherds go to the manger. [Luke 2:8-18] And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by

night. And behold, the angel of the Lord came to them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people. For to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign to you: You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased." And it came to pass when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us now go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which has come to pass which the Lord has made known to us. And they came quickly and found Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in a manger. When they had seen this, they made known abroad the things which were told them concerning the child. And all who heard it wondered at those things which were told them.

Seventh Lesson: Rev. Christian White

The Magi are led by the star to Jesus. [Matthew 2:1-11] Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there

came Magi from the east to Jerusalem saying, "Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east and have come to worship him." When Herod the king heard these things, he was troubled and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called all the chief priests and scribes together, he inquired of them where Christ should be born. And they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judaea, for so it is written by the prophet: And you Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the princes of Judah, for out of you shall come a Governor who shall rule my people Israel." Then Herod called the Magi privately and eagerly inquired of them what time the star appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem saying, "Go and search diligently for the young child, and when you have found him, bring me word again so that I may come and worship him also." When they had heard the king, they departed, and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them till it came and stood over the place where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshiped him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Eighth Lesson: (9:30) Beth Knickerbocker (11:00) Karen Palmer

Jesus is presented in the Temple. [Luke 2:22-29] And when the days of their purification were completed according to the law of Moses, they brought

Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord; (As it is written in the law of the Lord that every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) and to offer a sacrifice in accordance with the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon who was just and devout who was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had seen the Lord's Christ. He had been led by the Spirit into the temple when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law. Then he took him up in his arms and blessed God saying, "Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word.

Choir: "Nunc dimittis" [Luke 2:29-32] K. Lee Scott *Ninth Lesson: Rev. Dr. Gregory Adkins

St. John unfolds the great mystery of the Incarnation. [John 1:1-14] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and Word was God. The same was in

the beginning with God. All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of the world. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. The same came as a witness, to bear witness of the Light that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true light which lightens everyone who comes into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, but the world knew him not. He came to his own, but his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them he gave the power to become God's children, even to those who believe on his name: Who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor by human will, but of God. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, and the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

*The Blessing May he who gathered things earthly and heavenly into one by his incarnation, fill you with the sweetness of inward peace and goodwill; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be upon you and remain with you always. Amen.

GIVE

Thank you for your support of the mission and programs of Fairlington United Methodist Church during 2014. This year many newer individuals and families in our congregation have joined with others who have been here much longer to help make Fairlington one of the strongest United Methodist mission congregations in our region. While the needs of those around us remain great, the continued slow economy has made it a challenge for many among us to sustain the level of giving needed for our programs and mission outreach. During this Christmas season, I encourage each of us to be generous in fulfilling our pledge for 2014, going beyond with an extra gift, and in making a pledge for 2015. It is this generosity of spirit, service and financial support, this commitment to going the extra mile, that makes this special community we call Fairlington United Methodist Church such a treasured place for all of us. ~ Blessings, Randy Nuckolls, Chair Finance Committee
