A Toast to the Girls By Gear6id 6 hUallachain

The name of Glen Rovers is associated with success o'Ver tlhe length and breadtih of this island and beyond. Playing no less a part than their hurling bro1thers in the achievement of this success are the girls of the Camogie teams. A speciGl place of honour to the "Glen Girls" must be given in recogndtion of their outstanding featls and triumphs during a period in excess of forty years.

When t:he senior hurlers made .their hiSitoric break-through to win their first senior championship in 1934 the Camo:g.ie CJurb took tihe headine and also brought the senior camogie

ch:amp:i.onship to Blackpool, thereby sealing a unique doulble. The 1934 camogie tefclm, captained iby Mary Dovgan, was the spur and example for Glen Camogie teams to foUow, and particularlly those of !'he honour-laden years of the 'fiftie~ and 'sixties.

The camogie dUJb did lapse for a number of ye·ars. In 1947 that wonderful organiser Ghrissie DonovGn got together an e·nrthusiastic group of young girrls and they suoceeded in putting camogie on a s·o·und footing again. pionship at the first attempt. Promotion to Grade A followed in 1948. Their efforts in vhe A Grade could not long be thwarted and within two years, in 1950, the county championship was back again in Blackpool. The championship was retained in 1951, but eLuded the dub until 1957, when a talented and eager team beat aH oppositi-on and ltlhe rup was baok again.

A greart stol"y so far, but nothing in comparison to the glories which lay ahead in the 'si~ties. Plainly st'ated, the Glen Camogie Club won the Co-rk Semor Championship from 1962 to 1968 for a record seven years in succe-ssion. The worries, the storues and the glories of those seven wins have put the Glen Club in an unassailable position in Cork Camogie. We salute these gallant 'gi.rls, vhey are more rhan worthy of inclusion in the story of Glen Rovers.

Cmrenrtly the dulb is fie'lding two teams, an under-18 years team and an intermediate team. Those 't!Wo great north-'side camogie nurse·ries of St. Vincent's Convent and North Presentation Convent supply the bulk of today's teams. Given a year or two, success is bound to come, and Glen Rovers will be to the forefront of oamogie in Cork once more.

Many of rthe stars of former years are still happily associated with the running of the camogie dub and with the Glen Rovers Ladies' Committee. The Ladies' Committee is most active in tlhe organising of a variety of fundraising ventures) both for dub development and for oharitaible purposes. They have particul~rly excelled however in the manner in which they organised and met the club's obligations to cater for the many disr<inguished guests and visitting teams to the club premises in re·cent years.
