This month, we are observing Gotan-e, which is the celebration of the birth of our founder, Shinran Shonin. Shinran was born in the year 1173 at a time when many tumultuous events were occurring including wars and famines. He lost both of his parents at an early age and was given into the care of his uncle who, because he already had too many mouths to feed, took young Shinran to the local temple to be tonsured. Shinran spent the next 20 years of his life at the temple doing deep study and difficult practice but eventually came to the realization that for himself, the work he was doing was getting him no closer to an awakened state. He eventually left the temple and began to delve deeper into the sole practice of Nembutsu (reciting the Namo Amida Butsu, the name of Amida Buddha) which was a practice that contained all of the merit of the Buddhas wisdom/compassion, but was also something that could be done by regular(non -monastic) people anywhere, at any time. While amongst the regularpeople, Shinran came to many profound self-realizations. One of his deepest realizations was that he was a small, unenlightened being with little hope of perfection and, yet, he was nonetheless embraced by the great wisdom/compassion of Amida. Of the writings that he had studied some were by a man by the name of Shantao who, in answer to the question why do you not have a person perform contemplation but rather, directly encourage solely saying the name?replied, because the hindrances of sentient beings are grave, and though objects of contemplation are subtle, their minds are coarse, their souls are agitated and their spirits fly aloft, so that it is difficult for them to fulfill contemplative practice. For this reason, the Great Sage, taking pity on them, directly encourages them to solely say the Name.Shinran later included Shantao in his list of the Seven Pure Land Masters and this was because he saw Shantao as having clarified the Buddhas true intent; providing liberation to all beings through the Name of Amida Buddha. Shinran praised Shantao (and the other six masters) in many of his writings as it was through his study of their writings that he was able to encounter the world outside of the monastery in an authentic way; as ones true human self, small and foolish, but forever embraced in the great light of Amidas wisdom/compassion. And so this month, in observing the birthdate of our founder, Shinran Shonin, we should recall and reflect on his teachings, but also on the fact that his teachings came from a very human and personal place. We can (and should) study what we can and practice in ways that feel right for us, but we also may discover teachings that we dont care for or that the practices that used to work for us now make us uncomfortable. The important thing to remember is that no matter what, we are always bathed in Amidas warm light and once we acknowledge and accept our limited human capabilities, this is the moment when our lives become settled and we respond in great gratitude with Namo Amida Butsu. Hello everyone, welcome to May! He eventually left the temple and began to delve deeper into the sole practice of Nembutsu (reciting the Namo Amida Butsu, the name of Amida Buddha) which was a practice that contained all of the merit of the Buddha’s wisdom/compassion, but was also something that could be done by ‘regular’ (non-monastic) people anywhere, at any time.

While amongst the ‘regular’ people, Shinran came to many profound self-realizations. One of his deepest realizations was that he was a small, unenlightened being with little hope of perfection and, yet, he was nonetheless embraced by the great wisdom/compassion of Amida. Of the writings that he had studied some were by a man by the name of Shantao who, in answer to the question ‘why do you not have a person perform contemplation but rather, directly encourage solely saying the name?’ replied, ‘because the hindrances of sentient beings are grave, and though objects of contemplation are subtle, their minds are coarse, their souls are agitated and their spirits fly aloft, so that it is difficult for them to fulfill contemplative practice. For this reason, the Great Sage, taking pity on them, directly encourages them to solely say the Name.’ Shinran later included Shantao in his list of the Seven Pure Land Masters and this was because he saw Shantao as having clarified the Buddha’s true intent; providing liberation to all beings through the Name of Amida Buddha. Shinran praised Shantao (and the other six masters) in many of his writings as it was through his study of their writings that he was able to encounter the world outside of the monastery in an authentic way; as one’s true human self, small and foolish, but forever embraced in the great light of Amida’s wisdom/compassion.

And so this month, in observing the birthdate of our founder, Shinran Shonin, we should

recall and reflect on his teachings, but also on the fact that his teachings came from a very

human and personal place. We can (and should) study what we can and practice in ways

that feel right for us, but we also may discover teachings that we don’t care for or that the

practices that used to work for us now make us uncomfortable. The important thing to

remember is that no matter what, we are always bathed in Amida’s warm light and once we

acknowledge and accept our limited human capabilities, this is the moment when our lives

become settled and we respond in great gratitude with Namo Amida Butsu.

    Gassho,

    Rev. Diana Thompson

  • Buddhists do not count, and we call them Nenju, not Juzu, why? As Jodo Shinshu Buddhists, it does not matter how many times we say Namo Amida Butsu, it only matters that we say it with an entrusting heart. The need to count has left us, but the need to be mindful of the Buddha and the teaching has become much more important, so the Juzu becomes Nenju. This becomes far more evident

when looking at the Japanese for Nenju, 念珠.

The first character in the Japanese, 念 (Nen)

means to think on, to be mindful of. It is the same character as in Nembutsu. It is this Nen in Nenju that helps us every day to remember that Amida’s light is everywhere we look, no matter what is happening, where we are, or how good or bad we feel that day. As you go out and experience, enjoy and love these May days in front of us, remember to bring your Nenju, on your wrist, in a case or in your pocket, and may you always be mindful of Amida’s light in your life.

    Gassho (with Nenju),

    Salutations from Kaitlyn Mascher-Mace Sensei

It’s May! The sun is out, flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing and all around us the world had exited its slumber of winter and is once again awakening to the warmth of the season. Life is starting to enter that period of the year where every minute is full of activities. Be it Rockies games, taking your kids to taiko practice or just soaking in the sun, it becomes easy to forget to step back and remember that you are always in the light. However, as Jodo Shinshu Buddhists, we are lucky to have a reminder with us that no matter what we are doing, where we are, or what is happening, the Nembutsu is with us. What is this reminder? It is our O-Nenju! I have lately been wearing my TSDBT 100 year anniversary wrist nenju, and while stylish, it connects me back with the temple and the sangha. Also, it reminds me every day of the teachings. But, what does a Nenju really mean? And why do we wear them? Back in the mid 600’s in China, there lived a monk named Tao-ch’o (Doshaku (jp)). This monk saw that he was a foolish being, full of blind passions, and that he was not able to practice the path of the sages. Tao-ch’o encouraged all he knew to practice saying the Nembutsu, the Namo Amida Butsu. In order for him and his students to know how many times that they said Nembutsu (Tao-ch’o was said to have said it as many as 70,000 times a day!) they would first take a bean from a pile and put it in a basket. However, it was very hard to carry buckets of beans around, so Tao-ch’o, being a man of deep intellect, drilled holes in the beans, and tied them with a string, and from this, O

-Juzu (数珠) were formed. The monks of the time

would say Nembutsu, and count a bean or bead on the string every time. These strings of beads continued through time, and took on different and greater meanings depending upon the time and place. Even the pictures of Shinran and Rennyo on our Onaijin have them with O-Juzu in their hands. But, Jodo Shinshu

  • Keirokai 2019 Every year, the YBA enjoys hosting

    the "more experienced" members of

our temple for lunch, and this year

was no exception! We do this to

give thanks and honor their years of

    guidance, support, and love that

they provide not just to us, but to

    the entire community.

This year, on April 6th, the event

started with a short service led by

Rev. Fujii. Service was followed by

    lunch and musical performances by

three YBA members - Tara Case,

    Ayla Charness, and Katie

    Tsuchimoto. These talented ladies

helped cook and serve too, joined

    by fellow members Hailey Mayeda,

Ben Yoshida and Cody Yoshida, as

    well as advisers Amy Yoshimura-

    Campbell and Jon Campbell.

Special thanks to the following... we couldn't have done it without you!: Vicky

Case, Kristy Case, Dick Mayeda, Brandi Tsuchimoto, Emi Tsuchimoto, Keiko

    Yoshida, and Kevin Yoshida.

Thank you again to everyone who attended, and we look forward to seeing you

    again next year!

Dharma School Year; Gratitude & Memories

    by Alyssa Nilemo

Thank you to the following volunteers for getting last

month’s newsletter mailed in a timely fashion: Shirley,

    Rod & Carolyn—Marge Fukuhara & Ruby Miyazawa.

Thank you Sakura Square for your ongoing support

of Temple Life –especially for daily gate checks and

providing the weekly services of a security guard.

    Arigatou Gozaimasu

Thank you to all Sangha members for attending

this year’s Hanamatsuri service, potluck and

performances. It is also such fun for the kids to

show-off a bit of their talents and share with

you their interpretations of Buddhism. We

appreciate all of you who made up our

    supportive audience.

After Hanamatsuri passes it always seems like

time picks up and the rest of the Dharma

School year is gone in a blur. With that in mind

the end of year picnic will be held on Sunday

June 2nd in Westminster this year. The park is

called, Wolff Run, and is located at 4705 West

76th Avenue Westminster 80030. This picnic is

always full of fun, bingo and sunshine! Look for more information in the next newsletter!

Cherry Blossom Festival arrives right on the

heels of our Dharma School picnic. As you can

see on following pages of this newsletter,

volunteer positions have been “assigned” for all

the working elements of the Festival. As

Dharma School families – both parents and

students -, your commitment(s) as Festival

attendees AND volunteers are both valued and

    expected.

Please schedule a 2-4 hour block on either

Saturday or Sunday to bus tables (in the gym

space) and refill hot tea cups. As a former

Dharma School student who began this bussing

duty at age 5-1/2 (of course my Mom and older

brother were working with me – and I was also

under the watchful eyes of every auntie and

uncle within state lines), I regarded this task as

a fun time. I looked forward to each succeeding

Festival with great anticipation. There is

something to be said for working as part of a group in a position of service and “importance”.

I encourage all Dharma School families to seize

upon this opportunity to volunteer at the

upcoming Cherry Blossom Festival. It will be

another cherished page in your family book of

    memories.

participation of all Sangha members & friends. We look forward to

another successful Festival and will certainly be posting additional

volunteer opportunities in the coming weeks.

Redevelopment Update Redevelopment meetings for Sakura Square and the Temple continue to occur on a weekly

basis. We realize that because there are no visible signs of ground breaking or physical

changes to Sakura Square and the Temple, people may assume that no progress is being

made. That is not the case. There is a great deal of planning, preparation, decision-making

and thoughtful discussion currently taking place among Sakura Square LLC, Temple

representatives and the redevelopment team. We are all going through a learning process

and are cognizant of the reality that redeveloping a full block in the middle of downtown

Denver is a complex project that requires a great deal of time and dedication. We are truly

grateful to the many community volunteers who are spending countless hours to work on this

very important project for our community. We will continue to provide updates via the

Temple newsletter and appreciate having this space to do so. We appreciate the interest

    and support from the Sangha.

The community is always welcome to contact Gary Yamashita ([email protected]) or

Chad Nitta ([email protected]) with questions about the redevelopment of Sakura

    Square and the Temple.

Questions or Concerns: Please do not hesitate to contact one of the Cherry Blossom Festival Chair people, Wendy Thompson or

Gayle Goto. You can e-mail them at [email protected] or [email protected]. You may also contact either of the

volunteer coordinators, Shirley Tsuchimoto [email protected] or Brandi Tsuchimoto [email protected].

For questions relating to Sakura Foundation, please contact Stacey Shigaya at [email protected].

You’ve combed through this list multiple times and can’t locate your name? Please don’t despair – there is work available for

everyone! Managing a list of volunteers with over 500 names is a difficult task. Thank you for your patience and please let Brandi

Tsuchimoto know at [email protected] if there is a mistake or other problem. Thank you very much for your help in

making the Cherry Blossom Festival such a wonderful fundraiser for our temple!
