Honey’s Happenings

We will hold our annual Strategic Planning meeting in August to determine what we

will try to accomplish during the year. I will share our goals in an upcoming

newsletter. The goals will be used to create our fiscal budget for the year and we will get member approval for the budget at the September dinner meeting.

10 years ago, Colorado APICS Chapter and the Colorado RFID Association created

and held the first summer networking event, which was a huge success. Over the

past decade the annual event has garnered rave reviews and has become a highly anticipated summer event. Unfortunately, for the first time in a decade, we will not

hold the summer event. Do watch for other opportunities to network with your peers throughout the year.

Please be sure to read Roger Harris, VP of Professional Development’s article on

CPIM program reconfiguration in this newsletter and check out the education

program schedules.

As always, feel free to contact me with any needs, concerns or suggestions for the APICS Colorado Chapter.

Thank you for being part of our chapter! I look forward to seeing you soon!

Hello, Everyone! Welcome to our new APICS year! I

hope you were able to join us for a class, event or tour this past year. I would like to thank last year’s

Colorado Chapter board members for a great year!

Please help me in thanking the current board officers, directors and volunteers who are gearing up for

another busy year providing Operations Management professionals with educational opportunities,

certifications, networking sessions, tours and great

speakers at our dinner meetings.

EDUCATION NEWS APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM)

Re-Configuration

The CPIM market was concerned that the legacy CPIM program was 5 courses and 5 exams, so

APICS formed a task force last year to look into reconfiguring CPIM to fewer courses and exams.

CSCP and CLDT are single multi-section courses and only have one exam per program.

The task force researched other certification programs and discovered CPIM program took many more hours of exam time than other exams.

In response to the market, APICS has reconfigured the program into two courses and two exams.

The new program will be offered at the Colorado Chapter this Fall.

The new courses for CPIM will be Part 1 (Basics of Supply Chain Management), covering much the same topics as in the past. That is, Intro to Supply Chain Management, Demand Management, Master Planning, MRP, CRP, Purchasing, Inventory

Management, Execution and Control, Distribution, and Continuous Improvement. There is a Part 1 certification exam much

the same as there is a BSCM exam today.

Part 2 of the reconfigured CPIM consists of the legacy 4 modules of CPIM. Topics include: Strategic Management of Resources (Developing the Business Strategy, Competition, Internal and External Environments of Business, Sustainability,

Business Planning, Operations Strategy and Infrastructure), Master Planning of Resources (Demand Management, Forecasting, Sales and Operations Planning, Master Scheduling, Distribution Planning), Detailed Scheduling and Planning

(Inventory Management, Material Requirements Planning, Managing Projects, Capacity Requirements Planning, Procurement

Planning and External Sources of Supply), Execution and Control of Operations (Execution of Operations, Scheduling and Authorization, Quality Control, Communications, Continuous Improvement, Design Concepts and Tradeoffs). These

topics are much the same as the legacy 4 courses plus some new topics in Supply Chain. There is a Part 2 certification exam to cover all these topics.

Schedule of the transition: 08/31/17 The new CPIM Learning kit books are available for sale

08/31/17 Is the last day to purchase the legacy BSCM books and exams 09/01/17 The new Part 1 exam is available for purchase

09/15/17 The new Part 2 exam is available for purchase 09/30/17 The new Part 1 exam is available for execution at the testing centers

11/04/17 The new Part 2 exam is available for execution at the testing centers

12/31/17 Is the last day to purchase paper copies of legacy MPR, DSP, ECO, SMR books 01/07/18 Is the last day to take the legacy BSCM exam (retakes can be purchased until 1/6/18)

06/30/18 Is the last day to purchase legacy MPR, DSP, ECO, SMR exams credits (retakes are available for purchase until 12/15/18)

06/30/18 Is the last day to purchase electronic versions of the legacy MPR, DSP, ECO, SMR books

12/31/18 Is the last day to take legacy MPR, DSP, ECO, SMR exams.

Education News, continued

Continued from page 2 I know there are a lot of dates to follow. If you are in the middle of the CPIM program and have questions, please contact

Roger Harris or Karla Biggs-Gregory for clarifications and to let us know your intentions and schedule so we can assure we purchase the exams for you per the schedule.

The Basics of Supply Chain legacy course/exam can count as Part 1 in the new program. Part 2 can be accomplished by taking

the new Part 2 exam or by completing the 4 legacy exams (MPR, DSP, ECO, SMR) by 12/31/18.

As you can see the topics are much the same as the legacy program with improvements and additions to keep the programs

current. The exam and course structure is the big change that the reconfiguration brings. We will be speaking about this more in our PDM’s, newsletters and emails. The current CPIM program requires 10.5 Saturdays (84 hours), we believe the new

reconfigured CPIM will take about 9 Saturdays (72 hours). The reduction in time is due to the elimination of some redundancies

in the program and streamlining of some topics.

The Colorado Chapter is offering Part 1 in September 2017 and Part 2 in October 2017. We will continue to offer the CPIM program as a bundle, much the same as we have for many years, you can continue to sign up for CPIM and receive both

courses, membership, both exams and the on-line learning kit as a “value package”.

I look forward to speaking with you to answer any questions about the new CPIM program and/or to help you create a plan to

complete the current CPIM program you have started.

“I was able to take and pass the CPIM exam suite with the help of the courses offered by my local APICS

(Colorado Chapter) organization. The detailed review of their materials allowed me to pass each exam at the first attempt.

Class discussion and the real life examples of the concepts helped my understanding enormously. I subsequently took the

CSCP classes and just passed that exam last week. The bi-weekly classes were key to my success. I feel well prepared to

handle the challenges of the fast paced Supply Chain environment!” Caren King, MBB, CSCP, CPIM, Program Manager,

“I have to be honest with you that I had some reservations in the beginning what I would get out of this sort of class and what I would take away. I had no idea the overall impact that this class would have on me and my job and how I would be able to apply so much each and every day to my company. I really have never taken a class like this let alone enjoyed getting up on Saturdays at 5:30 am for 10 weeks. I was excited to get to class and learn the material to help advance my knowledge, not only for my job but for me personally as well. It was an amazing journey that has already impacted my company. I have created my own MRP system that has helped me lower our inventory dollars on hand since the end of March from nearly $900K down just under $700K because I have much better control of what is coming in and what is going out and how long it will last us. I have our inventory turns down as well since I am able to closely monitor our inventory usage on a monthly basis, as well as the last three months average better in my MRP system. There are only a few people that knew I was taking the class and those who didn’t know I was taking it, like my boss, still don’t quite understand how or why I am able to continue to drop the inventory dollars in the warehouse and have still not run us out of a single item since beginning this endeavor.” Dawn Livingston, Purchasing and Logistics, Ride Designs

These folks attended APICS CPIM courses two Saturdays a month February – June 2017 to help them become Certified in Production and Inventory Management. Congratulations on completing the classes!

If it’s that time of year again to renew your membership, there is a new feature on the APICS corporate website to select an autopay option for renewing annual memberships. We’ve had a few members try this new feature and were pleased

with how easy it was to setup. Additionally, there are also resources within the chapter to assist with renewing individual or company-wide memberships, so please feel free to reach out if needed!

It looks to be another great year for APICS with current members continuing to support supply chain excellence, and another wave of enthusiastic new members coming on board to contribute to the APICS community. I hope to see you at our

chapter’s next event!

APICS COLORADO CHAPTER 81 SALUTES VOLUNTEER’S PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

Does your company have an APICS Company Coordinator?

APICS COLORADO CHAPTER 81 Company Coordinators are a key link in our chapter’s information chain. They are the on-site point of contact for membership, certification and professional development questions and concerns and can quickly

get your teammates the answers and connections to resources they need to continue their professional development.

Currently we have nearly 20 coordinators and are looking to expand this all volunteer team. The hours and commitment

are very low for a volunteer position and we have dozens of companies needing this position filled.

If you are interested please contact Ken Cruise, CPIM, CLTD, Director of Company Coordinators, at [email protected]
