- Stefano De Ponti, would you tell usabout the experience on the day thefirst stone was laid for the new Dallarafactory?“It really was an experience. Inparticular for me, living in the States, tosee the engineers, Dallara, Pontemoliand Toso and his wife realising howmuch Dallara is loved and respected inAmerica. It was an all American party, but with a lot of warmth, and Dallarahimself was very much the centre of

attention. He made two speeches, abouthis experience as a driver and theAmerican competition, from RogerPenske to Bobby Rahal, fromIndianapolis to Sebring, and he reallyconnected with the Americans”.

- When did you decide to build a newfactory, and what were the intentions?“The idea of expanding commerciallyand technically in

the USA had been in the company’splans for a long time. The impetus camewith the renewal of the contract toprovide the cars for the Indy RacingLeague, which will begin in 2012. Thefactory will be Dallara’s main project inthe USA, but not its only one.We will be activein

STEFANO DE PONTI, HEAD OF DALLARA OPERATIONS IN THE USA TELLS US WHAT THE NEWBUILDING WILL BE LIKE; HE REVEALS THE COMPANY’S AMERICAN PROJECTS AND EXPLAINS THE REASONSFOR THE SUCCESS AND THE AFFECTION THAT DALLARA HAS RECEIVED ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE OCEAN

A DRIVING THE FUTUREother fields, even outside motorsport, exporting the technology, know-how andengineering experience that we haveacquired in these decades of success in

racing. The idea is to expand thecollaboration, which in Europe we havebeen involved in for some time, to thebig American car manufacturers: at a

design level, aerodynamics, safety, notnecessarily to do with motorsport”.

- What is the next step and when will

the factory be officially opened? Can you give us an idea of the costinvolved?“After the laying of the first stone, the“groundbreaking” as they call it inAmerica, the demolition work to clearthe old buildings in the designatedarea got underway. The unit will beoperational between the end of Julyand the beginning August 2011. Thetotal cost is 12 million dollars, 7 ofwhich are for the building“.

- The American factory is more than justan industry, it also a plan for social andurban regeneration, can you tell us a bitabout this important aspect?“The factory is located in Speedway, a city that is about 3 miles fromIndianapolis downtown. It is a city that dates back to thebeginning of the twentieth century, itgrew around the circuit that in 2011will celebrate 100 year of the 500 miles. The actual speedway is about 450 yardsfrom the new factory, in the historiccentre that hosted a number ofcompanies, such as Riley & Scott, whichconstructed cars in the thirties that theycould then test on the track. Today it is an area of redevelopment, and the Dallara factory is at the centreof this project”.

- What has been the key to establishingDallara in America?“I think the style, which reflects thefounder’s style. Dallara was humble whenit arrived in the states, it was willing tolearn and open discussions, but alsocame strong in technical competence. Itwas 1997, two years since Tony Georgehad created the Indy Racing League afterthe split with CART. Dallara, the engineer, accepted the challenge, setting thebusiness up according to two mainprinciples. The first was safety, essentialon circuits where it is quite common torace at over 200 miles an hour; thesecond is the technical aspect, the tricksof the trade which were new to Dallaraon the oval tracks. Thanks to the work ofall the engineers, including Andrea Tosohimself, they arrived at being the best. And with that came the respect of theAmericans who are pragmatic on thetrack and in business, but who areparticularly interested in results”.

- Who are the people you worked with inthe USA, and how did the collaborationcome about?“Dallara USA does not currently exist. Wework together in a joint venture with IndyRacing Experience, which is how we arerepresented in the distribution of ourparts in IndyCar and IndyLights. They

have a lot of experience in what they call“moving marketing”, they manage all themarketing for the Indy Racing League, with most of the attention being on thepublic. For example, they manage thetwo-seater IRL, which is used by VIPs andbusinesses for racing experiences, andalso the trucks that they bring to theraces that contain real museums, allowing the spectators to learn andexperiment with the technology. In thenew building they will be busy withmarketing whilst we work on theconstruction and planning, sharing thespace and continuing with a logisticalrelationship as far as parts areconcerned”.

- How are the exchanges betweenVarano and Indianapolis going, inparticular from an engineer’s point ofview?“The intention is to create a Masterscourse, together with the University ofIndiana and Italian Universities, whereDallara will train the American engineersof the future. The reason PerdueUniversity in Indiana, is interested inthis, is so they do not have go abroad tofind motorsport engineers in the field ofand they thought it appropriate to workwith Dallara. There will be students whocome to visit for the varying periods of

time in Verano, and Italian engineerswho will spend time at Indianapolis. It isa project that is very much in Gian PaoloDallara’s heart”.

- What is going to be the route for thevisitor to Dallara at Indianapolis?“There will be two areas for the fans.Upon entering the Dallara area they willbe shown and explained how are racingcar is born, they will walk down a pathwith video displays and it is ourintention that the enthusiast will haveleant how to plan and manage a car, from materials to the design of theparts. A virtual museum that can be

understood by people, even if they arenot engineers. In the second area

the fans will be given thechance to experiment in

the pit-stop, changing

tyres, simulating refuelling in amechanic’s overalls. Furthermore therewill be the chance to ride in a two-seateron the Speedway: in the USA you can puta number plate on a racing car, makingit “street legal”. Finally, it is going to bepossible to visit the more technical areas, the workshop where the cars aredesigned, assembled, and where we alsoconstruct some spare parts. There arealso plans for a restaurant”.

- What role will the new simulator play, and how similar will it be to that whichis about to be unveiled at Varano?“A smaller version of the simulator that has just been unveiled will be takento the Indianapolis factory, to be used bythe engineers and the team. Then wewill have other simulators, with simplersoftware but highly refined

graphics, available to the spectators”.

- Can Dallara become an example ofItalian entrepreneurship that knows howto expand thanks to the strength of itsideas and projects? “Italy should learn from the USA: theopenness with regards to ideas, thepassion and the willingness to invest. InAmerica there is enormous support forthose who come from abroad, it there isthe quality; the proof is in the greatappreciation Dallara has had in the USA.In the United Stated you don’t get aheadby knowing the right person, or havingfriends in high places, you need to begood at what you do. If you demonstratecompetence andreliability, you willbe rewarded”.

A great battle between championshipsthat hinged on a high level technical fightbetween the top teams. In a historic Indy-Car season, which saw the announcementof the next generation of cars for 2012, thecompetition on the track highlighted thequality of the cars and drivers, giving bothfans and professionals a memorable year. The two drivers involved in a final raceduel, Will Power and Dario Franchitti wereracing at their absolute limits; but in theend the versatility of the Scottish driverfrom the Ganassi team won out onceagain. The Dallara IR105 has reached itspenultimate year; winning races and pro-ving the quality that has already turnedItalian constructor into a monopoly. Thisyear, once again the quality of the IndyCa-r’s technical package has been confirmedin the fastest championship in the world, adapting to the different types of track, from the fast oval circuits to those thattake place on the roads. There was anextraordinary display of the level of safe-ty achieved, during Mike Conway’s inci-dent in the 500 Miles. Someone who real-ly knows how to use the equipment isFranchetti who took wins everywhere, taking the title with relative ease on theHomestead Speedway. However; Powerhas emerged as one of the greatest driversof the US scene, and he is one of the favou-rites to take the title in 2011. A more com-petitive season that will be the last for thecurrent model, after a long and successfulcareer. Successes that have redefined con-cepts of safety, reliability and versatilityand have meant a new dawn for Americanopen wheel racing.

Once again the champion of GP2 has graduated to F1. FreshWilliams signing, Pastor Maldonado, joins a long list of dri-vers: Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton, Timo Glock, Nico Hulken-berg, all of whom were promoted to the main world series. Ithas been an important year for the closest category to F1, interms of the performance of the Dallara-Renault-Bridgestonepackage. A year that marked the end for the second single-seater constructed in the Italian factory. Starting from 2011the changes begin: a car equipped with very similar aerody-namics to the current F1, with an 625 horsepower engine andbrand new Pirelli tyres. The first testing began on 18th Novem-ber at the Le Castellet ciruit with more than satisfactory results. The new car with Italian tyres and a developed engine wasavailable for all the teams. Despite the uncertainty of a newcar their were no significant technical problems. Pastor Maldonado and the Italian Rapax team dominated the2010 season. The Venezuelan driver achieved six consecutivemain race wins, taking the title with one race of the cham-pionship left to run. Maldonado’s biggest and most consistentrival was Sergio Perez, who is also going to drive in F1 nextseason, with the Sauber team. Diving with the Addax team, the Mexican driver took an overall second place, with twomain race wins at Monte Carlo and Abu Dhabi and more vic-tories at Silverstone, Hockenheim and Spa in the sprint races.Perez was followed by Jules Bianchi in the overall classifica-tion, the best new driver who is with the ART team and is thenew test driver for Ferrari F1. GP2 Asia, on the other hand, was won by Davide Valsecchi and by the iSport team. Dallaraprovided the cars for the first three years of the pre GP2 MainSeries, 2005 to 2007, a car that will now be put into retire-ment.

FIRST TIME FORGUTIERREZThis year motorsport has seen the start of a new category: GP3. All the cars carry theDallara logo and have Renault 280hp engines and Pirelli tyres. A classic trainingseries, newly introduced to the European Formula One weekends. Thirty cars signedup for a total of ten teams, each being asked to provide three cars. The champion-ship was extremely hard fought and saw many young drivers from all over the worldparticipating. Once again, Dallara proved to be the constructor of good quality andreliable cars in GP3, the perfect bridge between F3 and GP2.In the end, the title went to Esteban Gutierrez of the ART team. The Mexican wonthe race at Monza, the season finale. The new test driver for Sauber F1, Gutierrez, beat Robert Wickens, the Canadian driver for the Status GP Team, and Nico Mullerfrom the Jenzer team. Gutierrez was already far ahead in the classification, after fivevictories and a series of other good finishes.

LAST MINWorld Series

The World Series Renault 3.5 has been themost exiting championship in living memo-ry. The single-brand Dallara championshipwith a Renault V6 3500cc engine was deci-ded a few miles short of the finishing line inthe final race at Barcelona, concluding a longduel between Mikhail Aleshin and Daniel Ric-ciardo. The Russian driver overtook theAustralian before going on to take the cham-pionship. The first Russian to win a Europe-an high level championship was driving aDallara for the Carlin team, whilst Ricciardowas challenging him with the same brand ofcar for Tech 1. Amongst the stars of 2010,Esteban Guerrieri should be mentioned withthe new ISR team. The Argentinean driverwas particularly unfortunate to run into cou-ple of disqualifications which ended upbeing decisive. Both Aleshin and Ricciardothen went on to test for F1 at Abu Dhabi, forRenault and Red Bull respectively. It was theAustralian who had the best time, showingwith his Dallara that he had the skills requi-red for F1.In order to meet the demands and requests

The development of this new car hasalready begun in the factory in Varano, Ita-ly. The championship will continue to be con-tested over nine races, with two connectedto other events (Monza with WTCC and Mon-te Carlo with F1 and GP2) whilst the otherseven will all be Renault events.

CHAMPIONSHIPS2010

The F3 Euro Series in 2010 has survived the crisis, withan average of 14 Dallara cars (the Italian factory has amonopoly) with engines from both Mercedes and Vol-kswagen. The season was won by Edoardo Mortara ina Dallara managed by the Signature team with a VWengine. It is the second year in a row that the Italiandriver, who lives in Geneva, has won the classic end ofseries GP in Macao. Montara’s success in the F3 EuroSeries has interrupted the dominance of ART in thecategory, the had won every year since 2004.In the Italian F3 championship, where Dallara had todeal with opposition from the French Mygale team, theBrazilian Casar Ramos won in his Dallara for the BVMTarget team, becoming champion in the final race atMonza. At the start of the race Stephane Richelmi,Andrea Caldarelli and Daniel Mancinelli were all stillin the running for the championship, all driving Dalla-ra cars with Fiat engines. In Spain, the European F3Open (cars all provided by Dallara and all engines by

Toyota) saw Marco Barba win the championship, whohad come back to the series that he had previously lefta few years ago. In the British F3 it was another suc-cess for the Carlin team. The Frenchman Jean-Eric Ver-gne was victorious in a Dallara powered by a Volkswa-gen engine. Vergne was making his debut in F3, butthere was nobody who could challenge his dominan-ce. In Great Britain the teams are free to choose whi-chever car they like; all teams opted for a Dallara. Final-lly in the German Formel 3, first place went to Tom Dil-lmann of HS Technik. Another Frenchman and expertin the category, driving a Dallara with a Volkswagenengine, beat the German rookie Danie Abt from theVan Amersfoort team, in the final race of the season.A mention is due for the Japanese F.3, an high levelchampionship that started in 1973. Honda and Toyo-ta are involved in the series where 20 Dallara 309 and306 run in the National Class, in 2010 the title went toYuij Kunimoto, the brother of Keisuke.

VERNAYTHE FRENCH FLAIR

Running alongside the IndyCar Series is Firestone IndyLights, a Dallara single brand tournamnt, which has pro-vided a great show on the track. Even if the season pro-ved to be a showcase for the talented Jean-Karl Vernay, who left little room for competition. The French driver, who came from Formula 3, has been impressive sincehis first few laps, immediately adapting himself to Indy-Car. Winning on both the street circuit of St. Petersburgand on the track at the Barber Motorsports Park, Ver-nay also won another three races allowing him to getthe better of James Hinchcliffe. The Canandian’s testlaps should also be mentioned, he was more constantwith the alternating types of circuit, keeping his nerveon the oval circuits even in difficult moments. They allconfirmed their skills; now Indy Lights must face thechallenge of being a starting point for the young driversat the start of their IndyCar racing careers. After theRaphael Matos’s debut in the main series in 2008 withthe De Farran Dragon team, JR Hildebrand is also rea-dy to begin after his success last year. Still focusing onthe reliability of the technical package that will conti-nue to offer an almost unbeatable cost to performanceratio, the "Road To Indy" programme is ready to comealive, allowing for the creation of strong ties betweenDallara and Indy Lights.

Dallara sees quality as anessential factor in order to be aleader in the racing and

automotive markets. To guarantee the quality of Dallaraproducts, in recent years the companyhas taken the decision to embark ontwo important developments. First ofall to organise the Dallara qualitycontrol department with qualifiedstaff and innovative equipment; andto obtain the certification ISO

9001:2008 with which the companywill devote itself to guaranteeing ahigh quality standard able to meetthe increasing needs of the customer, also through shared effectivecompany procedures. The quality control department is thecentre of this company system, itworks full time to guarantee thequality and reliability of the Dallaracars. This institution is involved in thebusiness of testing semi-manufactured

materials and checking beforedelivery to the customer. The quality control technicians checkthat every detail of the physical objectcorresponds with the CAD plan. Forimportant structural pieces, non-destructive testing is also carried out, applying techniques such as magneticcontrol, dye penetrant inspection, ultrasounds, a type of scanning of thepieces (in this last example it alsoapplicable on composite materials).

The stafffollow training courses to utilise thisequipment, including the threedimensional equipment; and theyhave obtained internationallyrecognised licences in the techniquesof non-destructive testing. At Dallara quality control it ispossible to carry out threedimensional tests of an entirechassis, with precision to ahundredth of a millimetre, and laser scanning to check the aero dimensional surface, thanks to a precision laser scannerinstalled on the same mechanicaltesting arm. The precision of thetesting and the attention to detail isguaranteed also by other precisiontesting equipment such as thegeometric profile detector (withwhich, for example, the grooved and threaded profiles are checked)and the micrometric testing of theroughness. The components that pass theestablished checks for the variousfamilies of products are labelled, ifpossible, with the Dallara logo, codeand serial number in order toguarantee the possibility to retracethe production cycle. All testing isthen registered in purpose-builtsoftware.The quality control organization alsooffers service to those who havespecific testing needs, carrying out3D checks, superficial testing andnon-destructive checks.Dallara’s quality control is acontinually evolving organisationthat searches, inasmuch as ispossible, to get as close as it can tothe ever growing needs of the client. For this reason it is able tocontinually improve, an essentialfactor in guaranteeing a qualityproduct on the market.
