Congratulations to our Water Polo team who com- peted at Cowra and were placed second in the event. Mr Olsson was pleased with the behaviour 21 March 2011 and effort of all students. I received a wonderful letter from the Institute of Industrial Arts Technology stating that Nick Aus- tin had his major work for the HSC (Queen Bed) selected to be displayed at the “Timber and Work- ing with Wood Show” later this year. It was great to see a good number of students attend the Shadow Puppets performance. The school has booked a show for the students to participate in each term. It was great to see the response from students K-10. The Science and Engineering Challenge for primary and sec- ondary will be held on 29 th March, 31 st March. Neve Ward, Shanai Bulter, Lachlan Blatch and Ethan Monk have been selected to represent our pri- mary. All Year 10 students will accompany Mr Blowes to their event. Time out strategies for students at Yeoval Central school The Department of Education and training (Student Welfare Directorate) has set new guide- lines for the use of Time-out rooms in schools. At our school we have a Time-out area in the office for students who disrupt the learning of others. It is used as a proactive strategy to support self calm- ing, positive discussion and a time for reflective responses. Under the new guidelines parents will now be informed by letter if their child is placed in the Time–out area. A copy of the new guidelines is available to all parents and carers at our school office at your request. The school policy will be discussed at the next P&C meeting (10 th May). What’s Happening in Access this term

During the first week Years 11 and 12 visited CSU at Bathurst. The students had a guided tour around the university visiting differ-ent types of accommodation, the library, cafeteria and some spe-cialised lecture rooms. The university has courses like Nursing, Primary Teaching, Paramedics and Policing. They have a fitness laboratory that is quite overwhelming. The students were given a sample bag.

During Week 4 the Annual Access Camp was held at Burrendong Sport and Recreation Camp. Arriving Wednesday at lunch time we met with other students and staff members. The morning was spent in classes with their coordinating teachers and in the afternoon participating in sport activities such as archery, low ropes, mountain bike riding, canoeing, kayaking and raft building. Cody recalls an incident while bike riding in which Mark overtook him but not on his bike, flying through the air. Mark did sus-tain a few injuries. On Wednesday afternoon the rain fell but it did not deter the students from compet-ing in the archery competition. The rain didn’t bother the canoeists. The students were placed in teams to compete against other students in the evening activities. In the evening the students competed in a mini Olympics and Star Wars. A Police Officer from Dubbo came and talked to the students about cy-ber bullying and particularly the problems that can be associated with using face book. We had a very good time at Access Camp; we met new people in our class and new friends. On Wednesday we participated in indoor rock climbing and archery. We enjoyed it and had fun but it would have been better if we didn’t get soaked from the rain. In archery we played different games like cricket and blind date. On Wednesday night we played Mini Olympics which was heaps of fun, met people that weren’t in our class or year (Rhiannon’s team won) and we got cookies and milk after. Thursday’s activities were really fun, they involved bike riding and it was hard work but we all had a good time. Gemma fainted, Mark fell over and Rhiannon half fainted. Thursday night we played Star Wars and it was EPIC! It was brutal but so incredibly fun; afterwards we had a court case for what happened during the game. Natasha and Rhiannon

Access camp was a great experience. Many friends and memories were made. When we weren’t work-ing or talking, we were doing activities such as canoeing. We were able to capsize it or jump out, but we had to be careful of the blue-green algae. Everyone kept splashing each other and by the end of the day all the canoes were full of water. The weather on Wednesday was raining but we still had fun. On Thursday the rain disappeared and it was hot and steamy. On Wednesday night, we had a mini Olym-pics and we were in our “Poker Gangs”. On Thursday night we played “Star Wars”. We were in teams for the seasons we were born in and everyone had plenty of laughs in “court”. The best part of the whole excursion was listening to Gemma talking in her sleep. Caley and Ivana I enjoyed Access camp, it was a good opportunity to meet our course coordinators and our class mates. We enjoyed doing Maths with the other students because it was a hands on activity and we all under-stood what we were doing. In Hospitality we had Peter Davis from Newtown Providers come and give us a lesson on how to make a good coffee. Once he was finished explaining, we all had a chance to make our own coffee. The activities we did were archery, rock climbing and bike riding. The activities were very engaging and made our afternoons very interesting. Gemma and Sarah

Two weeks ago Mr Cluness organised a visit to Orange High school to participate in the University Road Show conducted by some universities for Year 12. There were 3 universities represented, Charles Sturt University, Southern Cross University and Armidale University. The purpose of the talk was to enlighten Year 12 in preparing for next year particularly if they are interested in attending University. The important dates this year for entering University were highlighted. They were also informed about the scholarships available and to make sure they apply for them. The representatives from the universi-ties talked about the cost of attending University and the cost of living. The speakers compared their university particularly with Sydney Universities.

The Yeoval Yabbies water polo team travelled to Cowra for the Western Area Championships. It was the Yabbies first attempt at competition water polo and we went unbelievably well. The first game was against the 3 time defending champs in the Cowra Catfish and we got beaten 20 – 0 but after video evidence was produced the score was updated to 20 – 1. Thanks Cheryl.

In our second game we were drawn to play the Parkes Platypus, after a short team meeting and revised tactics the yabbies were let off the chain to record a memorable victory of 9 – 3.

The girls were crowned runners up in Western Area which was an amazing effort. Thanks to the parents for providing travel, cheering and photo-graphs. The team consisted of Ivana van der Spek, Laura Johnson, Caley Becker, Brittney Smith, Alana Wirth, Tamara Lees, Paige Murphy, Emma Wykes and Kaitlyn Butler.

Congratulations girls, I was very proud of your efforts both in and out of the water.

YCS Celebrate Youth Week: On Thursday 7 April Yeoval Central School will be celebrating “Youth Week” with a number of excit-ing activities at our school. Our theme is “Dare to Dream” and we hope to inspire our students to reach for the stars in everything they do. We will begin the day with some guest speakers, including members of the talented Justice Crew and hopefully a talented young author. After recess we will be able to have some fun with such things as “Sing Star, Guitar Hero, Dare to Dream Catwalk, and the Dare to Dream wall amongst others. After lunch we will hold our inaugural summer sports competition. To round out the evening we will be holding a disco for Years 5 to 12, complete with DJ and lights. K-4 will also be involved in a secret choice. The day promises to be a fantastic time and a wonderful way to round out a very busy and productive term.
