This document has been created by myself as an an outline of the GCSE, A-level and entrance examination requirements for each medical schools A100 course, alongside their admissions policies for 2017 entry. The purpose of this document is to put the entry
requirements and basic admissions policies of all the medical schools into one place so it is easily accessible as a comparison tool, this does not replace the admissions documents or entry requirements of the individual medical schools which can be found on their
websites.
Although this document has been updated for 2017 entry, It is important that this table is used only as a guide alongside the other research you are doing. DO NOT USE THIS DOCUMENT AS YOUR ONLY RESOURCE FOR CHOOSING THE MEDICAL SCHOOL TO APPLY
TO! Make sure you use it alongside other research. The information is as up to date as I can make it as of august 17th 2016, but admissions policies and requirements change often so keep checking the websites of these universities and do not apply until you have checked and double checked that you meet the
requirements. As much as I have tried to avoid it this document has been made by a medical student and hence could contain inaccuracies so make sure you double check all requirements with the individual universities before apply – the only FACTS about the admissions policies or requirements of each medical schools are the ones which are given to you by the medical schools themselves, I
am not affiliated with any admissions department of any medical school.
I hope this document is of use to applicants and can you please leave me any feedback if you find any incorrect information in the document so it can be rectified as soon as possible.
THIS DOCUMENT DOES NOT REPLACE OFFICIAL ADMISSIONS DOCUMENTS/POLICIES/REQUIREMENTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL MEDICAL SCHOOLS SO PLEASE CONSULT THOSE BEFORE APPLYING, DO NOT BASE DECISIONS ON THIS DOCUMENT ALONE!

There is no minimum cut off
score. Total UKCAT scores of all applicants will be separated into
deciles and scored with a
maximum score of 3.
GCSEs and UKCAT are scored in a 70% to 30% weighting respectively.
English language, English literature, math’s, chemistry and biology are scored in a ratio of 4:2:1 for A*, A and B respectively. 2 further subjects are scored, 2 points will be given for an A*, if the grade is any lower no points will be given. This score is scaled to a maximum of 7
points so the combined maximum score with the UKCAT is 10 points.

There is no UKCAT cut off.
Applicants are ranked based on academic achievement and UKCAT score. The top 500 are then invited to an
interview.Due to competition the minimum requirements at GCSE and A2/AS are unlikely to secure an interview without a very high UKCAT score. The UKCAT score is factored into
the pre-interview rank.

UKCAT total score is assessed and applicants are given a rank
before being split into octiles. There
is no cut off score.
Edinburgh do not normally interview school leavers. Assessment before an offer.
Applicants are scored by 2 admissions officers to give a total of 40 points from:
Academic grades (max 20 points) 50%Non-academic criteria (max 6 points) 15%
UKCAT score rank (max 8 points) 20%SJT band (max 6 points) 15%
The highest scoring applicants are offered places. It has been known that applicants can only drop a few points out of the 40 to be given an offer, hence this is a very
competitive scoring system.

of the UKCAT. Band 4 will not be

If minimum requirements are met the best 8 achieved GCSEs are given a score, this is then combined with a
UKCAT score (which is determined after the UCAS deadline each year). The highest scoring candidates are

score.
UKCAT score is balanced against academic achievement to date, hence a strong UKCAT can make up for slightly
below average academic achievement upon application. The personal statement and reference are also
considered.

There is no UKCAT cut off

scrutinized.
If the minimum requirements are met then candidates are scored using a scoring system and the highest
scorers are invited to interview. UKCAT is scored out of 24 (2400 = 24, 2350 = 23.5, 2300
= 23 and so on). This score is combined with an academic score which is also out of 24. The best 8 GCSEs to include core subjects (English language, maths, science and the best remaining subjects) is scored where A* = 3 points, an A = 2 and so
on. If candidate have achieved A2 levels the best 6 GCSEs are scored out of 12 and the 3 A2 levels are
scored out of 12.This combines to give a score of 48, for which the
highest scoring individuals would be invited to interview.

and must include science, maths and English language plus the remaining highest GCSE grades to total 9.
Meeting or exceeding this score of 15 does not mean you automatically move onto the next stage in the
admissions process. The UKCAT score is combined with the academic score and the most competitive applicants move onto the second stage. For 2016 an average of 625
or greater was deemed competitive. The most competitive candidates have their personal statement and reference looked at in reference to the
non-academic criteria, and the most competitive candidates after this are invited to interview.

UKCAT is used by but the SJT is not. A UKCAT cut off
threshold is used.
Applicants meeting the minimum academic requirements will be required to surpass the UKCAT threshold for the year of entry (for 2016 entry this
average was 665, but it does change depending on the admissions cycle). After this cut off has been surpassed the non-academic requirements form submitted to the university is looked at and the best candidates are then
selected for interview.
