    Question

Jean-Jacques Rousseau discusses the legitimacy of authority in The Social Contract. In an essayof about 1200 words, discuss Rousseaus ideas on the legitimacy of authority. Be careful to

include the following in your discussion:

a.) Rousseaus idea of the legitimacy of authority.b.) Consider the statement, Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains.c.) When are citizens obliged to obey the law and when are they not?d.) The importance of the general will.e.) Discuss a real life example where people have questioned the legitimacy of authority (in

a country, company, etc) within the context of Rousseaus ideas.

    Guidance:

In answering this question, you need to read carefully Units 18 and 19 Rousseau and

Democracy, specifically Rousseaus ideas on legitimacy. The students should consider thedifference between raw power (might) and the right to command (right or legitimacy); how

people can be in chains and free at the same time? When is it right to obey the state? What about

the importance of the general will in terms of the legitimacy of authority? After discussing all ofthese ideas, the student should go on to give a real life example, whether political, social oreconomic, which is specifically about the legitimacy of power (of a state, leader, company,

group). The example given by students should not be copied from any book or other source; it

should be the students own contribution. Remember to document any words or ideas that are notyour own.

NOTE: Evidence of consulting e-library sources will be an added asset.
