Summer Lawn Care GuideIf spring lawn care is about getting yourlawn healthy and green, summer lawncare is about KEEPING it healthy whiletemperatures soar and rainfall becomes afleeting memory. It’s also aboutmaintaining a lawn that can withstand allthe barbecues, games, parties, andrunning feet that summer has to offer. Here are some tips for keeping your lawnin shape over those long, hot days ofsummer.

About Summer Lawns

After the spring growing season, summer brings quite a bit of stress tolawn grasses. Not only are the heat anddrought damaging, but we aren’t asforgiving in the summer as we are in thewinter. We want our lawns lush andgreen for outdoor activities, and we tryto fight nature by continuing to fertilize, water, and coax new growth out of ourlawns no matter what the weather. However, by understanding andrespecting the seasonal changes of turfgrasses, you can take steps to care gentlyfor your lawn as the mercury rises.

Cool-season grasses (such as fescue, bluegrass, and rye) grow best whentemperatures are in the 60s F.

Warm-season grasses (including Zoysia,St. Augustine, Centipede, and Bermuda)like temperatures in the 70s.

Once temperatures get into the 80s andabove, lawns will begin to struggle alittle, with cool-season grasses havingthe hardest time. Growth will slow, colormay fade, and lawns will show signs ofwear and tear as they are less able torecover from stress and traffic. Somecool-season lawns will even go dormantin the summer, looking brown and brittleuntil early fall.

Water Wisely

Lawns need at least one inch of water perweek, and more when the heat is severe.Use a rain gauge or straight-sided can tokeep track of the amount of waterreceived from rainfall and irrigation.

Water deeply and less frequently toencourage drought-tolerant roots.

Water early in the day to reduce

evaporation and fungal growth.

Either water your lawn regularly anddeeply, or don’t water at all. Don’t letyour lawn go brown and dormant, thentry to “water it back to life.” If your lawngoes dormant in summer, it should staythat way until fall – don’t worry, itshould recover once the weatherchanges.

Mowing Tips

Raise your mower blade in the summer.Taller grass is more drought-tolerant,grows deeper roots, and helps shade theearth to prevent weed seeds fromgerminating. Cool-season grassesshould be mowed at 3”- 4” during thesummer, or as high as your blade will go,while warm-season grasses should bemowed at 2”- 3”.

Mulching grass clippings helps keepmoisture levels steady.

Mow regularly, to prevent cutting morethan 1/3 of the grass blade at a time. Thiskeeps your grass healthier and preventsthe clippings from smothering the grass.

Keep mower blades sharp. Make sureyour mower is cutting your grass, nottearing it, to minimize stress during hottemperatures.

Don’t Over Fertilize

If your lawn is looking straggly inmidsummer, resist the urge to fertilize. In fact, it’s best to stop fertilizing about30 days before your area’s summertemperatures arrive. Applying extrafertilizer in the heat of summer can burn

your lawn and create a flush of tendergrowth that will struggle in the hotsummer weather. Never fertilizedormant lawns – wait until they green upin the fall.

High-TrafficAreas

By summer, many lawns begin to showsigns of wear, especially in a few popularpathways. Consider installing steppingstones to minimize damage to yourgrass, and try to minimize traffic ondormant, brittle lawns. If you’re gettingplenty of rainfall and your lawn isactively growing, you can apply a bit offertilizer to these areas to help the bladesrecover faster.

Control Weeds

Summer is the season to get thosegrowing weeds removed before theybloom and disperse seed for next year.Targeted postemergent herbicides aredesigned to kill broadleaf weeds withoutharming turf grass, but they must beapplied when temperatures will bebelow 85° F for a few days. Keep in mindthat during the heat of summer, ANYproduct can be damaging to already-stressed lawn grasses, so use sparinglyor hand-pull weeds instead.

Insects and Diseases

Dormant or drought-stressed summerlawns can be more susceptible to insectinfestations, such as chinch bugs, cutworms, armyworms, sod webworms, fire ants, fleas, and mosquitoes. Minorinfestations often take care ofthemselves, but severe problems mayrequire attention.

Summer is also the time for fungaldiseases, such as powdery mildew andbrown patch. Apply fungicide if needed, and avoid watering in the evening tokeep nighttime moisture at a minimum.

Grubs will begin hatching in your lawnover the summer. If grubs typicallycause problems in your lawn, you canbegin applying grub control aroundmidsummer.

With warm weather and family events, the Fourth of July can be a fun time withgreat memories. But before your familycelebrates, make sure everyone knowsabout fireworks safety.

If not handled properly, fireworks cancause burn and eye injuries in kids andadults. The best way to protect yourfamily is not to use any fireworks athome — period. Attend publicfireworks displays, and leave thelighting to the professionals.

Lighting fireworks at home isn't evenlegal in many areas, so if you still wantto use them, be sure to check with yourlocal police department first. If they'relegal where you live, keep these safetytips in mind:

Kids should never play with fireworks.Things like firecrackers, rockets, andsparklers are just too dangerous. If yougive kids sparklers, make sure they keepthem outside and away from the face, clothing, and hair. Sparklers can reach1,800°F (982°C) — hot enough to meltgold.

Buy only legal fireworks (legalfireworks have a label with themanufacturer's name and directions;illegal ones are unlabeled), and storethem in a cool, dry place. Illegalfireworks usually go by the names M-8 0 , M 1 0 0 , b l o c k b u s t e r , o rquarterpounder. These explosives werebanned in 1966, but still account formany fireworks injuries.

Never try to make your own fireworks.Always use fireworks outside and have

a bucket of water and a hose nearby incase of accidents.

Steer clear of others — fireworks havebeen known to backfire or shoot off inthe wrong direction. Never throw orpoint fireworks at someone, even in jest.Don't hold fireworks in your hand orhave any part of your body over themwhile lighting. Wear some sort of eyeprotection, and avoid carrying fireworksin your pocket — the friction could setthem off.

Point fireworks away from homes, andkeep away from brush and leaves andflammable substances. The NationalFire Protection Association estimatesthat local fire departments respond tomore 50,000 fires caused by fireworkseach year.

Light one firework at a time (not in glassor metal containers), and never relight adud.

Don't allow kids to pick up pieces offireworks after an event. Some may stillbe ignited and can explode at any time.Soak all fireworks in a bucket of waterbefore throwing them in the trash can.

Think about your pet. Animals havesensitive ears and can be extremelyfrightened or stressed on the Fourth ofJuly. Keep pets indoors to reduce therisk that they'll run loose or get injured.

If a child is injured by fireworks, immediately go to a doctor or hospital. Ifan eye injury occurs, don't allow yourchild to touch or rub it, as this may causeeven more damage. Also, don't flush theeye out with water or attempt to put anyointment on it. Instead, cut out thebottom of a paper cup, place it aroundthe eye, and immediately seek medicalattention — your child's eyesight maydepend on it. If it's a burn, removeclothing from the burned area and runcool, not cold, water over the burn (donot use ice). Call your doctorimmediately.

Fireworks are meant to be enjoyed, butyou'll enjoy them much more knowingyour family is safe. Take extraprecautions this Fourth of July and yourholiday will be a blast!
