My job as the AAOS President
is made enjoyable by having a
strong executive board to work
with. I thank all the board
members in advance for their
time and commitment this year
in making the AAOS what it is
today and what it will be in the
future. I thank the past presi-
dents/trustees of the AAOS for
their guidance and continued
support of the group. I am
looking forward to serving in

Event.
-Aaron
Greetings to all the members
of the AAOS! Another year
has indeed passed us by very
quickly. It is again time to
introduce ourselves and the
positions we are serving in this
year. This will be my 7th year
serving on the board for the
AAOS. I have had the oppor-
tunity to serve for 2 years as
the newsletter chair, 3 years as
treasurer, 1 year as president –
elect, and now finally the dis-
tinct honor and privilege to
serve as the president of this
esteemed organization. I am
truly looking forward to work-
ing with a fantastic board this
year and am optimistic that we
will be able to continue with
our excellent programs, both
CE and Social.
As for me, not much has
changed since last year. I still
live and practice in South Or-
ange County. I practice in a
busy multi doctor office in
Laguna Hills. When not see-
ing patients and working on
business for the AAOS, I am
busy co-administrating a prac-
tice management/buying
group “Infinity Vision Alli-
ance.” I have been happily
married for 13 years and have
3 great kids, Skylar (9), Payton
(6) and Colby (3). The family
keeps me very busy outside of
optometry. I still find myself
at swim meets, basketball
games, hula competitions, and
dance classes with my girls.
My son who recently turned 3
still loves Thomas trains,
Tonka
trucks and
playing
anything
that resem-
bles drums.
I have three
basic goals
during my year as president.
First, I would like to continue
to maintain excellent continu-
ing education seminars for
our members at NO COST.
If you make arrangement to
attend all of our CE events
we will have 13 hours over
the course of the year all free
of cost to members of the
AAOS. Second, have a high
level of participation from
our membership. We will
make sure our events are well
organized and interesting
(they are always social), with
FREE food and beverage for
those members who attend.
Third, I‟d like to find a way
to add a charitable compo-
nent to our organization. We
will do so by having raffles at
all our FREE events with
excellent prizes like plasma
TV‟s, Ipods, Blue Ray Play-
ers, dvd players, and great
gift cards. With the money
raised we will then donate the
proceeds to various charities
in need. (See Stacey‟s article
for info on our last AAOS
raffle).
To accomplish these goals,
we have asked companies to
sponsor the AAOS. I would
personally like to thank Matt

AAOS members, along with their
family and friends, gathered together
on Saturday, January 23rd at the
Culver City Marriot Hotel for our
annual Installation Banquet to honor
our incoming board members of
2010.
If you weren‟t able to make it this
year, you missed out on one entertain-
ing, hilarious night! It was an evening
probably unlike any other you might
experience. You may never see your
fellow colleagues and their guests
singing, dancing, per-
forming skits, or doing
a „cat-walk‟ ever again.
“The Dinner Detectives
Murder Mystery Show”
provided the entertain-
ment for the night, and
they definitely deliv-
ered!
Our guests gathered in a
private room and enjoyed an hour of
drinks and appetizers. Everyone min-
gled and dined while the actors an-
nounced that each guest was now a
part of the show. Wearing name tags
with any name other than their own,
each person was now a suspect in the
murder mystery.
Throughout the eve-
ning, the Dinner De-
tectives actors pleas-
antly interrupted our
meal with skits that
involved, unexpect-
edly, certain members
of the group. Our
guests were also un-
aware that some of
the hired actors were
actually dining right
next to them, posing to be friends or rela-
tives of AAOS members. The actors
definitely had us laughing all night
as they used our very own members
and inside jokes of optometry to be
part of the show.
Congratulations to Randy Blancq,
guest of Dr. Cindy Siu, for solving
the murder mystery of the night. He
was awarded with a bag of prizes
courtesy of The Dinner Detectives.
As our guests dined on chocolate tortes
for dessert, a thank you to our 2009
board was given and an introduction to
the new 2010 board was presented.
Guests were also given a raffle ticket,
plus an opportunity to purchase addi-
tional tickets, for a chance at an array of
wonderful prizes. Fleming‟s gift certifi-
cates, Best Buy gift
certificates, and a
Blu-Ray player are
just a few of the
many prizes given
out. Dr. Greg Kame
walked away with
the most sought after
prize of the night: a
46" Vizio flat-screen
T.V.!
All proceeds from the raffle ticket sales
will be donated to a relief fund for vic-
tims of the Haiti earthquake. AAOS is
proud to announce that a total of $1,400
was raised at our Installation Banquet to
help those in need. Read below to see
how our funds were tripled so that we
were able to donate $5600.
Special thanks to all those who attended
and had a wonderful time with us. It‟s
always nice to see our fellow colleagues
outside the office, enjoying themselves
and having some fun! We look forward
to seeing all of you at our future AAOS
events!

To all AAOS Members:
Are you prepared for the storm? Don‟t get caught in the
rain.
Taken from the AOA website:
If you require more information please log onto the
AOA website and search for EHR recommendations.
Ten things optometrists should know about EHRs:
1. EHRs are not mandatory. The AOA
encourages doctors to use EHRs and
provides information at http://
www.aoa.org/HIT.xml but does not
recommend specific products.
2. Provisions within ARRA give signifi-
cant incentives in Medicare and Medi-
caid for doctors to use EHRs. Last win-
ter, the AOA successfully convinced
Congress to include ODs in these pro-
grams.
3. Doctors who begin using EHRs by
2011 or 2012 can receive the maximum
reward, up to $44,000 over five years
through the Medicare program (75 per-
cent of Medicare-allowed charges up to a capped
amount for each year). But if you wait until 2015 to
start, there are no incentives.
4. Doctors must use the EHRs in a "meaningful" way.
Merely purchasing/installing software will not be
enough. Doctors will have to demonstrate that they are
using the EHR as a tool to improve patient care.
5. Beginning in 2011, Medicare physicians who imple-
ment and report "meaningful use" of EHRs will be eli-
gible for an initial incentive payment up to $18,000.
ODs who practice in health professional shortage areas
may qualify for an additional 10 percent incentive
through Medicare.
6. Doctors who do not start using EHRs by 2015 may
face penalties in Medicare. However, the HHS has the
Staying Current with Optometry Regulations in California: Dr. Steve Bae
Page 4 Eye on AAOS
Topic: Electronic Health Records
If you have any suggestions for future topics, please
email us at:
authority to make exceptions to the Medicare penalties on a
case-by-case basis for physicians who demonstrate significant
hardship (e.g., a physician who practices in rural areas without
adequate Internet access).
7. The EHRs must be "certified." The AOA has worked along-
side ophthalmology organizations to secure a certification
track for eye care EHRs, which was previously unavailable for
vendors of eye care EHRs. The AOA believes the federal gov-
ernment will provide a separate path to certi-
fication specifically for ARRA so that all
EHRs regardless of specialty or designer/
creator can be certified for purposes of the
stimulus.
8. In Medicaid, the payments begin as high
as $25,000 for the first year and up to
$10,000 each of the following five years.
But the Medicaid program has additional
hurdles and is only practical for practices
with a high volume of Medicaid patients.
9. One doctor can't get available bonuses
from both Medicare and Medicaid.
10. Doctors should begin to make plans to
implement EHRs in practice before the end
of 2010. The AOA will have more guidance
about certification and meaningful use in the months ahead.
AOA members with questions or concerns should contact
Rodney Peele of the AOA Washington office at 800-365-
2219, ext. 1348 or [email protected].
