COZY QUILTERS

The quilters have been busy all summer. Maria Sendzik and Arlene Roncin attended a “Quilt Odyssey” in Hershey PA, where they learned a paper piecing pattern called “New York Beauty”.

Maria hopes to share the technique with sister quilters. Judith Hromoko made a table runner and is now working on a small quilt. She also bought a new sewing machine. Irene Ribaudo finished a 6 block calendar sampler and two pillows. Marie Hagemann continues her work on her “stack and whack” quilt and Bar-bara Tuzio completed an Asian inspired quilt called “ The Garden Window” for her granddaughter Gianna Ross to bring to college. Next Cozy Quilter meetings are Sept. 8 and Sept. 22. All are welcome. We have good desserts!!! Barbara Tuzio

MOVIE MANIACS is BACK On August 4th the new season of the Movie Maniacs was kicked off by the NOCB members and friends attending a free advanced screening of the movie "The Help". We were invited to this screening through AAUW National in association with Disney Studios. A good time was had by all and what an excellent movie; so good I think we all would have PAID for it. There were 12 of us in attendance. The next Movie Maniacs will be on Sunday, September 25th to see "I Don't Know How She Does It!" Starring:

Plot:Based on the critically acclaimed bestseller by Allison Pearson, 'I Don't Know How She Does It' follows a Boston-based working mother trying desperately to juggle marriage, children, and a high-stress job. Kate Reddy (Parker) devotes her days to her job with a Boston-based financial man-agement firm. At night she goes home to her adoring, recently-downsized architect husband Richard (Kinnear) and their two young children. It's a non-stop balancing act, the same one that Kate's acerbic best friend and fellow working mother Allison (Christina Hendricks) performs on a daily basis, and that Kate's super-brainy, child-phobic young junior associate Momo (Olivia Munn) fully intends to avoid. When Kate gets handed a major new account that will require frequent trips to New York, Richard also wins the new job he's been hoping for--and both will be spreading themselves even thinner. Complicating matters is Kate's charming new business associate Jack Abelhammer (Brosnan), who begins to prove an unexpected source of temptation. Please email me if you are interested in joining the Movie Maniac group at [email protected]. There will be some changes--We will be seeing a movie only, and please email me if you'd like to keep Movie Maniacs on Sundays or if another night of the week is better. We always go to a movie around the 4pmish--5pmish time. Feedback would be great. Pammi

Sarah Jessica Parker , Pierce Brosnan , Greg Kinnear , Kelsey Grammer , and Jane Curtin.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT

The NOCB-AAUW Community Service Project “Stand Up For Yourself” will be held on December 3, 2011 at Georgian Court University. This program to address bullying is again presented in part-nership with the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore for 10 and 11 year old girls. Students from Point Pleasant Borough High School will lead the discussion during the break-out sessions with at least one of our members in the break-out room to observe the session and, if needed, to assist with the discussion. Many of you have helped to monitor the break-out sessions in the past, and we hope that you will be able to volunteer again this year. Of course, new volunteers are always welcome. Please call Eve at 732-714-9158 or Marie at 732-295-1439 to sign up. We think that you will find it a rewarding experience. Eve Stafford Smith & Marie Hagemann, Co-chairs

NEWS FROM AAUW-NJ President Sally Goodson reminded us to make every meeting a “Party”. Members can now pay for registration of the Fall Focus Meeting with paypal on the AAUW-NJ website. Because of high costs of holding meetings at Forsgate, AAUW-NJ is trying out the Marriott Courtyard in Jamesburg for the Oct. 15 meeting. The AAUW-NJ Charitable Trust has completed a brochure of all the Trust’s awards. We have copies. Our branch is now part of the Central District which includes our sister branches of Freehold and Northern Monmouth. However, I am still the Southern District Co. Coordinator with Jane Niemeyer. Barbara Tuzio

Marlene’s Visit with AAUW-Iceland

In June 2011 my friend Audrey and I visited the Icelandic Association of Universi-ty Women in Reykjavik Iceland. Ms. Geirlaug Thorvaldsdottir picked us up at our hotel and drove us to the famous Hotel Holt. The owners of the hotel collect art which is displayed on the walls in the dining room, the bar, and the lobby of the hotel. At the hotel we were joined by Dr. Kristin Vala Ragnarsdottir. Geirlaug was President of the Association for fourteen years and is now on the Board of Direc-tors. Dr. Ragnarsdottir received a fellowship from Educational Foundation to complete her Doctorate Degree at Northwestern University 1979-1980. Her Mother was Treasurer of the Icelandic Association for many years. Today she is the first woman Dean of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland. The Icelandic Association started in 1928. Today it has 320 members. You do not have to be a University graduate to become a full member. Women graduate high school at age twenty which is equal to one year of college. They have four meet-ings a year with speakers. Once a year they publish a twenty page newsletter. I received a copy but it is in Icelandic which is a thousand year old language. The Association teaches courses for a fee to raise money for scholarships and other projects. They give two courses a year in professional development, thea-tre, and literature. A one or two year academic scholarship is given to foreign woman living in Ice-land to study at the University of Iceland. Marlene Snedaker

Pammi had surgery on August 23rd and wants you to know that her “new little. Tummy” is doing well. She just completed a difficult milestone—a week of clear liquids. Our branch has completed its Northern Ocean County (NJ) Branch Research and Projects Grant. We re-ceived a certificate of thanks from AAUW recognizing the accomplishment. A grantee will now have the good fortune of being sponsored by our grant annually and we will be able to communicate with the grantee who will be the recipient. A copy of the certificate is printed in this newsletter. Again, congratulations to us and all who worked at our fundraisers, and to those who contributed personally to the grant over the past fifteen years. Barbara Tuzio
