CELL-DYN is a registered trademark of Abbott Laboratories. COMPAQ is registered trademark of Compaq Computer Corporation.

WINDOWS is registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation.

This procedure is for the connection of the CELL-DYN® 3000 series and the 1700 analyzer to the Compaq® Contura laptop computer used by Field Service. This will allow the FSR to connect to the external computer connection on the back of the Data Station for verification of correct information transmission from the CELL-DYN to the customers' LIS (Lab Information System).

ISA# 77-012 - CELL-DYN® External Computer Set-Up Page 10Tools Needed:

1. Compaq Contura laptop computer with Microsoft Windows® software

2. 9 pin Null Modem Cable with female connections on both ends (the cable can be purchased from any computer or electronics store)

Connection:

3000 Series

Connect one end of the nine pin cable to the External Computer connection (Com 1) of the Data Station. This connection is labelled on the old style (one unit) data stations and is on the same board as the graphics printer connection. On the new style (PC-type) data station the connection is labelled as "Com 1", and is also on the same board as the graphics printer labelled as "LPT1". The other end of the cable should be connected to the Compaq Contura computer port labelled "I0I0I". This concluded the hardware connections required.

1700

Connect one end of the nine pin cable to the I/O port above the graphics printer connection on the same card. This board is the closest to the front of the instrument. The other end of the cable should be connected to the Compaq Contura computer port labelled "I0I0I". This concluded the hardware connections required.

ISA# 77-012 - CELL-DYN® External Computer Set-Up Page 11Laptop Software Set-Up

The software connection with the analyzer is done with the Windows "Terminal" program which is a standard program in Windows. This program is found in the Accessories sub window. The CELL-DYN® computer set-up information will be needed to set-up the connection to the Compaq® computer. To get the computer set-up information you will go to the set-up screen from the main menu. In set-up you will need to write down the following information: Baud Rate, Data Bits, Stop Bits, Parity, and the CTS state (not enabled or enable).

On the Compaq Contura you will need to open the Accessories window by double clicking on it, and double clicking on the "Terminal" icon. The Terminal program needs to be set-up for the same settings that the analyzer is set at. Under the settings menu, click on "Communications.." menu; this will bring up the set-up screen. In the "communications" screen, set the Baud Rate, Data Bits, Stop Bits, and Parity to the values you wrote down from the CELL-DYN computer set-up screen. If the CELL-DYN is set for CTS enable, set the Flow Control to Hardware. If the CELL-DYN is set for CTS not enabled, set the Flow Control to Xon/Xoff. Set the connection field to Com 1:. You can click on the "OK" key to activate these settings.

The Terminal program will need to be told where it is going to save the information you are about to download. To activate the computer for downloading you will need to click on the "Transfers" menu and click on "Receive Text File...". You will need to type in a file name with the extension ".TXT" (example "CD3000.TXT") and click on the "OK" key. The Compaq is now ready to receive all data. After samples have been sent to the Compaq, you will be able to see this information on the screen as well as having it sent to the file you have set up. After completion of data transfers, you will need to click on the "Stop" key at the bottom of the screen to end the connection.

Hard Copy of Information

ISA# 77-012 - CELL-DYN® External Computer Set-Up Page 12In some instances you may need a hard copy of the information received from the CELL-DYN for evaluation or faxing to Santa Clara. The Received Text file can be printed by any word processor that can load an ASCII text file by changing from your word processor file type to an ASCII file type.

Now you can compare your results to the examples in the back of the Interface Specifications guide or present the printout to whom ever needs it.

A new model hard drive has been approved for use on all DOS based Cell-Dyn hematology instruments that use a hard drive. The following model numbers are included in this update.

Cell-Dyn® 3000CS (68)Cell-Dyn® 3000SL (95)Cell-Dyn® 3500CS (96)Cell-Dyn® 3500SL (97)Cell-Dyn® 3200CS (80, not launched)Cell-Dyn® 3200SL (109)Cell-Dyn® 1700 (77)Cell-Dyn® 1700CS (79)

The new hard drive is the latest version of the Quantum Fireball SE® series 3.5" IDE drive. This new model is being introduced as a direct replacement for all previous models of hard drive which are now being discontinued. The new drive can be identified by the marking on the label (SE21A012 or SE21AP4). Due to common application to all CD3000 series, and CD1700 instruments, all hard drives will now be stocked without having any software installed on them. When a replacement hard drive is needed in the field, the drive will need to be partitioned and formatted by the FSR before the system software can be installed. The catalog number will be (8200570701). The old catalog number of (8200570601) is now obsolete. The new drive is a 2.1 GB capacity drive, but the extra storage capacity does not provide any advantage to the system. The CD1700 will use the same CMOS "user" settings as the previous drive.

ISA# 77-017 - New Hard Drive Page 2

Cell-Dyn 1700 Hard Drive Installation Instructions:

Note: The CD1700 does not have a setup disk to backup nonvol information. If it is possible to access the existing hard drive, it will save time and trouble to print out the calibration and dilution factors, QC file setups, etc for later use before changing the drive.
