Framed

Sunday, 12 December 2010

Set almost entirely in Wales, Framed tells the story of 10-year-old Dylan Hughes (Samuel Davies) and his family's struggle to keep their small petrol station, which sits at the foot of a mountain in North Wales, afloat.

Manod village is a rain-soaked community where hope is thin on the ground, and money even thinner. When Dylan's dad (Mark Lewis Jones) suddenly leaves home, things get even tougher for him, his sisters Minnie (Mari Ann Bull) and Marie (Gwenyth Keyworth), baby brother Max and his mother (Nicola Reynolds).

Dad’s departure however, coincides with the secretive arrival of a convoy of men and trucks, who take up residence on top of the mountain. The villagers discover that the National Gallery in London has been flooded, and the priceless paintings are being sent by the lorry load to Wales for safe storage in the bowels of the old slate mine inside Manod mountain (as they were back in the Second World War).

In charge of this is Lester (Trevor Eve), an intelligent but uptight art curator who prefers paintings to people. That is, until a funny and pivotal misunderstanding leads him to invite Dylan to view the paintings inside the mountain. What ensues is good news for both Lester and the rather depressed town of Manod.

Manod develops an interest in art and Lester develops an interest in Manod in the form of the lovely Angharad (Eve Myles), the local school teacher. Through the transformative power of art Manod starts to transform itself, beginning with the service station, where Mum and the children revive the flagging fortunes of the petrol station by broadening the services they offer into catering and a coffee bar.

However, despite everybody's best efforts, the petrol station faces closure when the family fails to generate enough cash to keep it going. Could an audacious art theft solve their problems?

Family Confidential: The Hemmes

Monday, 13 December 2010

The Hemmes family revolutionised the Australian fashion scene with the House of Merivale and Mr John. Their name has been synonomous with style and sophistication for more than 50 years.

The women are the retiring types, Merivale and daughter Bettina eternally camera shy, leaving it to the men, John Hemmes and son Justin to be the showmen. They have risen to the challenge, often branded as peacocks and playboys, revelling in the fast, shiny and new and attracting more than their fair share of gossip and innuendo.

Today the Hemmes command a hospitality empire comprising a chain of glamorous restaurants and nightclubs worth a reputed $500 million.

But despite the hype, enormous wealth and flamboyant exterior, this family of four is an intensely private and tight knit group. The outward glamour belies the reality of a family as real and down to earth as any other.

They also have a new reality to also with. John Hemmes has a serious illness.

Please note: A preview DVD for this program will be sent on Thursday, November 18.

Willie's Chocolate Revolution

Monday, 13 December 2010

British chocolate enthusiast Willie Harcourt-Cooze’s financial situation is precarious and he is forced to look into other ways of keeping his business afloat, including outsourcing elements of his chocolate bar production. He soon abandons this idea choosing instead to stay true to himself and his dream – whatever the cost. Machines are sourced from across Europe and Willie starts to build his new factory. His chocolate bar recipe is key to setting him apart from other bars on the market.

After much experimenting he reveals his recipe to family, friends and finally his chocolate group. His chocolate group has come on tremendously and its members have even developed a taste for the dark variety, but despite this success Willie’s plans for his chocolate bar are entirely upset when his beans arrive from Venezuela – and they are the wrong ones.

To The Manor Bowen: Flood

Tuesday, 14 December 2010

It’s four months since the Llewelyn-Bowens turned their back on London for a new life in the country, but instead of rural tranquillity, all they’ve had is dust, noise and builder stress.

Even Laurence is feeling uncharacteristically down saying, “I almost feel like someone has decided to pay me back for all those years of doing this to other people’s houses.”

As the building work reaches its dirtiest and noisiest stage, their 20-room house seems more like a war zone than a designer pad.

Tempers fray as Laurence reveals the colour, ‘guacamole’, for his groovy retro kitchen. Jackie sees red (or green!) and throws a whole pot of it over the long-cuffed creative.

To lift spirits, Jackie decides to throw a summer party, a joint celebration of Jackie’s and Cecile and Hermione’s birthdays. However, the party is double the size of an average wedding and for a family living out of suitcases and cooking in a shoebox, it’s one hell of an undertaking.

Everything is going to plan until just one week before the party when Gloucestershire is hit by the worst floods on record.

Will Jackie’s mammoth party have to take a rain check?

The buzzer noises all have some relevance to the questions asked in this episode. Jeremy’s sounds like a firework rocket, Alexander’s is a moose mating call, John’s is the ‘Fruity Fruity Frootee’ song, and Alan’s is a cuckoo clock.

And quiz master Fry has a treat for tonight’s panellists – they’re allowed to keep their own scores.

Sleek Geeks: Why Is It So?

Thursday, 16 December 2010

Back by special demand, Karl and Adam take on yet another episode of answering questions from the studio audience and the website.

In this edition Karl and Adam tackle questions about what’s in water other than water? How do you win Lotto (or why you can’t win Lotto)? Why the sky is blue? And what happens to your body when you go under general anaesthetic? Karl conducts a test to see if black cars get hotter than white ones when left in the sun. Karl and Adam try to work out just how strong eggs are by getting Adam to stand on them. You’ll be amazed how much weight they take. Ruben demonstrates what happens when something very hot hits something very cold, by pouring boiling water into liquid nitrogen.

A question sent to our website asks “If our body renews every seven years why don’t we look like second-graders?” Karl explains that a new discovery, which is an unexpected side effect of a spike in Carbon 14 from nuclear explosions, has shown that different parts of our body renew quicker than others. Karl explains why the uterus is his favourite body part.

The rank-o-meter challenges a studio member to rank in level of radioactivity - a microwave, a banana, a granite bench top, a smoke alarm and a human.

Rake

Thursday, 16 December 2010

As Barney (Russell Dykstra) starts to rebound from his recent marriage woes, Joe Sandilands (Geoff Morrell) is publicly outed as one of the MPs who patronise brothel Club Jules. Meanwhile, seeking relief for a hang-over, Cleaver (Richard Roxburgh) gets hit over the head during a botched robbery at a local pharmacy. So too does one of the hapless robbers when his accomplice takes a wild swing at a CCTV camera and misses, badly injuring his mate.

Feeling sorry for himself Cleaver calls Barney to the hospital, hoping Barney will see his injuries as punishment for his betrayal. But Barney sees this as just as another of Cleaver’s manipulations

To add insult to injury, a small piece about the attack on Cleaver in the newspaper is overshadowed by a story of an assault on a woman in Glebe. So Cleaver is delighted when he’s presented with handling the defence of the woman’s assailant, Travis Tanner – a case which came to him via Missy (Adrienne Pickering) , who says she saw the accused elsewhere at the time of the assault.

When the injured robber dies, his mate is charged with manslaughter, and Cleaver is asked to defend him. Meanwhile, Joe Sandilands, having lost everything – including his wife and children, looks to Missy for solace but realises it’s Cleaver who has her heart. Barney and Scarlet (Danielle Cormack) visit a marriage counsellor, where Barney makes it clear that their marriage is over – leaving Scarlet reeling.

When Joe commits suicide, everyone is devastated: after the funeral Barney uncharacteristically visits a pole-dancing club; a maudlin Cleaver, yearning for the good old days, kisses ex-wife Wendy (Caroline Brazier); and Missy, the last to see Joe alive, turns to Cleaver, only later having to confront an angry David (Matt Day) who wants to know why she’s always going missing.

A family dinner for Fuzz’s (Keegan Joyce) birthday turns ugly when Fiona tells Fuzz she’s leaving him for a younger boy.

Meanwhile Missy arrives at the Tanner trial to give evidence for the defence, but is instead confronted with something from her past that could change her relationship with Cleaver forever.

Louisa (Kerry Armstrong) comes to the rescue when local woman Tamara Denning (Mandy McElhinney) falls on hard times after her husband leaves her and their three young children.

Louisa faces a sobering motherhood challenge when Holly’s (Hanna Mangan-Lawrence) gap year starts to echo her worst fears. Holly’s grand ideas about finding herself seem to have run aground in a haze of junk food and day time television. Desperate to snap Holly from her torpor, Louisa enlists her help to look after Tamara’s young children, with near dire consequences. A close escape shakes Holly up and prompts some reflection about her responsibility to herself and others.

Minna (Julia Blake) continues to find life tough going without Sandy. Pesky visits from enthusiastic young priest Father Samuel (Simon Maiden) further cement her intractability. Minna is both shocked and heartened to learn Father Samuel is Sandy’s parting gift to her. When Father Samuel laments the difficulty he’s having connecting with his local constituency, Minna puts him to good use. Father Samuel becomes instrumental in easing the Rainbow’s End childcare crisis, and a purposeful Minna reconnects with life and her community.

Breaking Bad: Gray Matter

As the frustrating search for a legitimate job lands Jesse (Aaron Paul) in a new drug dealing partnership with his friend, Badger (Matt Jones), Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Skyler (Anna Gunn) are invited to a birthday party at the estate of his former research partners, Elliott and Gretchen Schwartz.

No one feels more out of place at the lavish event than Walt, especially after he sees the trappings of wealth and fame accumulated by his old friends. He’s put at ease, however, when Elliott is genuinely touched by the cheap package of ramen noodles that he gave him in honour of their many years together as struggling young chemists.

Meanwhile, Jesse finds that Badger isn’t the kind of business partner that he’s grown accustomed to, and when Walt, Jr. (R. J. Mitte) is threatened with arrest after soliciting an off-duty cop to buy beer, he turns to Hank (Dean Norris), and not his dad, for help.

With her son’s predicament forcing Skyler to reveal that her husband admitted to smoking marijuana, she decides that the only way to get Walt to accept Elliott’s offer to pay for his cancer treatments is by staging an intervention. Surprised to find his family waiting for him, Walt has no choice but to hear them out.

After listening to everyone, Walt announces that he doesn’t want to go ahead with something that might only keep him alive for a year or two longer, but he has second thoughts about his decision. And now that he’s facing a huge medical bill, Walt arrives at Jesse’s house offering to renew their business arrangement.
