About Cebu

The city is an important cultural center in the Philippines. The city's most famous landmark is Magellan's Cross(pictured right). This cross, now housed in a chapel, wassupposedly planted by Ferdinand Magellan when he arrivedin the Philippine Islands in 1521. It was encased in hollowtindalo wood in 1835 upon the order of the AugustinianBishop Santos Gomez Marañon to prevent devotees fromtaking it home chip by chip. The same bishop restored thepresent template, or kiosk, located at the present Magellanstreet between City Hall and Colegio del Santo Niño.Revered by the Cebuanos, the Cross of Magellan is a symbolof the beginning of Christianity in the Philippines.

A few walks away from the Magellan's Cross is the BasilicaMinore del Santo Niño ( bottom left ), an Augustinian churchwhich was elevated to the rank of minor basilica in 1965during the 400th year celebrations of the Christianization ofthe Philippines held in Cebu. The church, which was the firstto be established in the islands, is built of hewn stone and

features the country's oldest relic, the image of the Santo Niño de Cebu ( bottom right ).

Sinulog festival

The Sinulog festival is one of thegrandest and most colorfulfestivals in the Philippines. Themain festival is held each year onthe third Sunday of January inCebu City to honor the SantoNiño, or the child Jesus, who usedto be the patron saint of the wholeprovince of Cebu (since in theCatholic faith Jesus is not a saint, but God). It is essentially a danceritual which remembers theFilipino people's pagan past andtheir acceptance of Christianity.

The festival features some the country's most colorful displays of pomp and pageantry: participantsgarbed in bright-colored costumes dance to the rhythm of drums, trumpets, and native gongs. Thestreets are usually lined with vendors and pedestrians all wanting to witness the street-dancing.Smaller versions of the festival are also held in various parts of the province, also to celebrate andhonor the Santo Niño. There is also a Sinulog sa Kabataan, which is performed by the youths ofCebu a week before the Grand Parade.

Recently, the cultural event has been commercialized as atourist attraction and instead of traditional street-dancingfrom locals, Sinulog also came to mean a contest featuringcontingents from various parts of the country. The SinulogContest is traditionally held in the Cebu City SportsComplex, where most of Cebu's major provincial events areheld.

Cebu Cityhe arrival of the expedition of Don Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Fray Andres de Urdaneta on April 28, 1565marked the Christianization of the Philippines as well as the colonization of Cebu by the Spaniards. Afterbombarding the palisades of Rajah Tupas (nephew of Humabon) and destroying the village, Legazpi rebuiltthe settlement and named it "Villa de San Miguel." Later, however, after finding of the famous Image of theSe?±or Santo Ni?±o de Cebu by one of Legazpi's soldiers, Legazpi renamed the settlement: "Villa delSantisimo Nombre de Jesus" or Village of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. But in on history's lapses, nothing isrecorded as to when or why Cebu finally reverted to its original name of Zubu or Zebu in pre-Magellanictimes.

Safety Travel Tips

Be wary about over-friendly strangers offering drinks or confectionery as these may belaced with substances that cause drowsiness or unconsciousness. The victim is thenrobbed.

There have been attacks of piracy and armed robbery against ships in and aroundPhilippine waters. Mariners are advised to take appropriate precautions.

Visitors who take part in water sports and scuba diving in the Philippines should be awarethat rescue services are not always as comprehensive as they might be in other countries.

Kidnapping is rife throughout the Philippines. Never travel alone unless you have to, and ifyou do, inform everyone possible of your travel itinerary and accommodation plans.

Avoid travel off the beaten track and leave travel plans with friends or relatives.

Most large hotels have an in-room safe or deposit boxes at the front desk. Use these tokeep your valuables and important documents safe.

When moving about, keep an eye on your belongings.

Don’t display your money or wear too much jewellery. It attracts too much attention.

Filipinos point with their lips not with an outstretched index finger. They pucker their lipsand point with them. Therefore don’t be offended by thinking the person is pulling faces atyou.

Getting someone's attention is not done with the voice, it is done using the hissing sound -"Psssssst, which is often used even if they know your name.

Like most Asian cultures you will see women walking hand in hand or with their armsaround each other, and men touching each other in public. This has nothing to do with theirsexual orientation and everything to do with the "loving family" nature of these warmtropical people.

Toilet Tip Pack tissue paper in your purse as public toilets almost never haveany…….AND YOU WONT SEE ANY PUBLIC TOILET SEATS!!!!!!

Water Visitors are advised to drink bottled or boiled water. Tap water in thehotel/s is potable.

Jeepney's are the locals best means of transportation. Stepping into ajeepney can be crowded and small for a normal traveler. Also, pick-pockets are known to frequent these vehicles looking for naiveforeigners. If you have to ride a jeepney, its best to stand back fromthe sidewalk and wait until one passes by which has the passenger'sseat open next to the driver and flag him over. Its more comfortable

and safer.

Philippine Coins

In the Philippines, coins of 1, 5, 10, and 25 centavos(officially called sentimo), and 1, 5 and 10 pesos(officially piso) are in use. All older coins have beendemonetized, and cannot be used anymore.

You will probably never see the one centavo coin for real,as they are very difficult to find, and also pretty useless. The five-centavo coin is exactly the same size as theone-centavo coin, but actually has less metal, due to thehole. This coin is also not very useful, and sometimesseen as decoration on key-rings, or used as emergencywashers. The the smallest coin you'll actually find incommon use is the twenty-five centavo coin. The onepeso coin, most common of all, depicts the national heroJosé Rizal, and the five peso coin freedom fighter EmilioAguinaldo. The bimetallic ten peso coin was introduced in2000, and is not yet (in 2005) in wide circulation, although it is getting more common, and I have seen thefirst vending machines accepting it. This coin shows thefreedom fighters Apolinario Mabini and Andres Bonifacio.Note that the same heroes also appeared on the(former) bank notes of the same value.
