EDUCATION – Pre schooling, Schools and universities – Local and private North Cyprus education is compulsory and is free from the Cyprus government from the ages of 5-17 years. Many foreigners in Cyprus prefer to send their children to one of the many private schools in North Cyprus, which cater for all ages, from Nursery to Pre School taking you up to University.

North Cyprus Education Educational system is divided into two sections: - Government based schools and colleges - Private fee-paying schools and colleges Government schools and colleges The Government schools and colleges operate predominantly in the Turkish language, English language is taught as a second language and there is also the option of German or French. After the entrance examination at the age of eleven, selected students are attend one of four “Marif Kolegi” secondary schools, where the language of the class is English. Expatriate children can enter without examination on condition that they have been living on the island for no more than two years. In comparison the private sector uses English or Turkish as a medium of instruction. A third option is one of the modern foreign languages.

Government schools and colleges are run in accordance with a curriculum ordered by the Ministry of Education and embrace children aged 5 to 17. A significant component of education is Turkish and Cypriot history. Progress through stages such as kindergarten, primary, middle school, and senior high school is regarded as a great milestone and are celebrated with Government certificates, speeches and ceremony.

Private schools and colleges Private schools and colleges operate with fees and usually charge between $1,500 and $2,500 per academic year, depending on the age of the student and the establishment itself. Even they are considered “private” institutions, they are monitored and approved by the Ministry of Education and must follow the principles relating to the basic curriculum, assessment, disciplinary issues and standards of teachers and teaching. As the private schools provide longer hours and terms, they are able to extend the curriculum and some follow the UK Key Stages, IGCSE, and a limited number of AS levels, The Cambridge Young Learners Scheme, SATs and TEFOL. An important part of the curriculum is Information Technology. All students are also expected to learn Turkish. Extra-curricular activities are a hallmark of the private school system with the emphasis on the natural gifts of children who are encouraged to build their confidence in dancing, music, sport, and other types of performance. School uniforms are worn by every student in North Cyprus. The day in Government schools and colleges normally starts at around 8.30 a.m. and finishes at lunchtime for three days a week, and at around 3.30 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. on other days. In private schools the day usually finishes at around 3.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. Schools and colleges normally break for the summer holiday starting in the middle of June and lasting until early September. Private colleges often provide summer schools and organize a wide choice of activities and trips.

Girne Girne or Kyrenia is regarded as the most beautiful town, owing to its lovely harbour, mighty Venetian castle, and a backdrop of mountains. The Kyrenia area is greener than the rest of Cyprus and has a cooler climate due to the mountains and sea breezes, ideal in the height of summer! Apart from Girne harbour and the Venetiancastle, there’s much else hidden away amongst Girne’s steep serpentine alleys. The Anglican Church, the Cafer Paşa Camii, the Ottoman Cemetery and the Chrysopolitissa Church attest to the spiritual life of the town, there is a tiny Folk Art Museum, and the Bandabuliya(old market) together with a host of shops. Finally, in Girne’s numerous cafés and restaurantsyou can enjoy socialising with friends or new acquaintances. Girne Harbour& Castlein Kyrenia Girne’s medieval harbour is one of the most picturesque in the Mediterranean and is busy with excursion boats, laced with wooden pontoons and bristling with masts. Kyrenia harbour itself is a horsehoe, with its western side dominated by the massive Venetian castle, while the harbour entrance is protected by a breakwater wall. The quay bustles withrestaurants and small hotels, some in converted carob warehouses, others in newer modern buildings, with balconies, upper stories and canopied ground floors. Girne Castle has a long and confusing architectural history, having been adapted, destroyed, rebuilt and improved so many times. The Byzantines first built a castle, perhaps on the remains of a much earlier structure around the tenth century AD. Rectangular in shape, it was reinforced and extended during the Lusignan period with the addition of living quarters and a moat. Its present form took shape from the Venetians in the sixteenth century with the addition of the west and south walls and the construction of three new bastions. The British once used the castle as a prison and as a police academy during the late 1950s, to incarcerate EOKA fighters. Never taken by force (though it was almost destroyed by the Genoese in 1373), the castle did succumb to the Ottomans in 1570. It is said that the Venetian commander of the castle negotiated a truce with the Ottomans until it became clear how the siege of Nicosia turned out. When the Ottomans presented him with the severed head of his Nicosian counterpart, he promptly surrendered. Golf in North Cyprus Golf is a relaxing and competitive sport which is becoming more and more popular in North Cyprus. The sunny climate means you can enjoy golf at its best. The weather between November and March is generally cool, ideal for attempting to lower your handicap! From July until the end of summer it is best you avoid playing when the sun is at its strongest at midday. There are six golf courses in located around Cyprus, five in the south and two in the north.

Or if you are not confident enough, perhaps some lessons at the academy which also boasts its own three holes, will get you in the swing of things. Take a relaxing break to restore your energy at the 19th hole at the clubhouse with a revitalising drink, or eat a lovely meal at the nearby 200 seat restaurant. If you would like to save all of your energy for the golf, there are golf carts available to take you to your next location. Future planned developments for this great golf course include villas very near to the course so visitors will be able to enjoy golf all day long without having to waste time travelling. Cengiz Topel Golf Course, North Cyprus What can be better than feeling the refreshing breeze from the sea over your skin as you concentrate on your favourite sport? All this can be yours if you visit the Cengiz Topel Golf Course situated near the Guzelyurt (Omorfo) region. This course boasts two loops of nine holes, with a total par of 70 and pans a distance of an amazing 5,233 yards. The Cengiz Topel Golf Course aims at everyone, from beginners to the experts. If you believe you are a good golfer and like a good challenge then the seaside holes are for you. It is somewhat different to your typical golf course, as in some areas the greens are actually brown (sand and oil) which creates a great surface for putting. You can visit this golf course everyday of the week and hire your clubs. If you would like an opportunity to get to know the local golfers and play a round of golf with them, it is highly recommended that you visit on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Law in North Cyprus The TRNC uses the almost the same legal system as Great Britain, which makes it a comfortable and comprehensible place to purchase a property. There are a number of advocates and legal advisers based in Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus (T.R.N.C.)who have extensive knowledge of the English law and the Cypriot Law, plus European Union Law and International Law. We would always recommend hiring a local solicitor (Advocate) in Northern Cyprus when deciding to buy a North Cyprus property. They will be able to guide you through the whole process. There are many reputable advocates in Cyprus, including those recommended by the British Residents Association here in Northern Cyprus. The advocate’s role is to advise you, provide you with checks on the company you are buying from, to apply for your permissions to buy a property in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a foreigner. Foreigners will be approved with a few checks, such as a criminal record check. Also your advocate can act as your Power of Attorney in your absence, confirming title deeds and government documentation to ensure a proper Contract of Sale is made between Buyer and Seller that works for you.

Beginners and more advanced divers can explore sites at the eastern tip of the island such as the Grand Canyon and the Lighthouse Reef. Karpaz Gate Marina is the first of its kind in Cyprus to acquire Gold Anchor status, the highest accolade available for marinas around the world. After a rigorous appraisal, the Yacht Harbour Association awarded the elite status in July 2013 after praising the marina’s ambiance and customer service. The journey takes approximately 12 hours. Foot passenger single fares are currently TL50, with taxes payable as well. Cars must be booked in advance and a standard saloon car costs TL110, with tickets for passengers on top of this. The company’s office is just before the military barrier by the Icon Museum in Gazimağusa. Tickets can be bought there, but not online, nor at travel agencies. Cheaper and quicker routes are operated by Akfer Shipping, an imaginatively named amalgamation of former rivals, Akgunler Shipping and Fergün Shipping, and by a new operator, Filo Denizcilik, whose fares are slightly cheaper still. Three scheduled routes serve Girne’s ferry port. From Taşucu in southern Turkey, the fastest is operated by Akfer for passengers only and carries 250 people, departing daily at 09.30 or 11.30 from Girne, and making the crossing in two and a half hours or less. The fares are currently TL69/114 for a single/return ticket. Akfer also operates a slower car ferry five times a week, departing Taşucu every day, except Friday and Saturday, at 24.00 and leaving Girne Monday to Friday at 12.00. The voyage takes up to six hours and carries 120 cars and 800 passengers. Passenger fares are TL59/99 one-way/return, standard saloon cars cost TL150/300 one-way/ return. Filo also operates a five times weekly car ferry, on the same days, leaving Taşucu at 02.00 and Girne at 14.00, except on Friday, when it departs at 24.00. Its vehicle fares are the same, but the adult passenger fares are TL45/90 single/return. Access to/from Greek Cyprus The stringent border regulations that for so long prevented free movement between the north and south of Cyprus are slowly eroding. Since 2003 both Cypriot locals and EU tourists have been able to cross at one of five designated checkpoints, open 24 hours. A further crossing at Lokmaci Street/Ledra Street in Lefkoşa was opened to pedestrians in April 2008, and in October 2010 an additional crossing was unveiled by both presidents at Yeşilirmak. The formalities are straightforward – simply present yourself with your passport and complete the appropriate visa application. The current crossings are: Metehan (aka Agios Dometios or Kermia)(Lefkoşa): This crossing handles the most traffic of the six vehicle crossings and may also be used by pedestrians. Akyar (aka Black Knight or Agios Nikolaos) (Gazimağusa): Within the British Eastern Sovereign Base Area and open to all traffic. Ledra Palace (aka Ledra Gate)(Lefkoşa): Right by the Green Line in Lefkoşa. Open to pedestrians, cyclists and diplomatic vehicles only. Lokmaci Street (aka Ledra Street) (Lefkoşa): This is a result of north/south rapprochement and is the newest, and perhaps the most interesting and most frequented, of the pedestrian-only crossings. The familiar repository of global high street names that is Nicosia’s Ledra Street contrasts starkly with Lefkoşa’s Lokmaci Street. The distance walked is insignificant, but the gulf of culture and affluence is huge (though diminishing) – truly ‘east meets west.’ Dhekelia (aka Pergamos or Beyarmudu) (Gazimağusa): The other gate in the British Eastern Sovereign Base Area, again open to all traffic. Güzelyurt (aka Zohdia, Bostanci, Morphou, Astromeritis, Morphou, Omorfo) (Güzelyurt): The crossing point with the most names. Open to all traffic. Yeşilirmak: Situated in the far west, at the end of a road partially funded by the EU. The newest crossing, open to all vehicles and pedestrians.

Labour Day is also known as May Day and as celebrated in most countries around Europe. It is a holiday resulting from efforts made by the labour union movement, celebrating the economic and social achievements of workers. North Cyprus however, represents a public holiday. Only government offices are closed on this day, but many employers choose to celebrate it with their staff. May 19th - Commemoration of Atatürk& Youth & Sports Day - Atatürk'ü Anma, Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus commemorates Youth & Sports day as it shares many holidays with Turkey. This is an annual Turkish national holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence on the 19th May 1919. Atatürk himself proclaimed May 19th as "Youth and Sports Day" and it serves to honour the country's founder. During this holiday ceremonies are held across all Turkey as well as North Cyprus. Youths sing the national anthem and recite poems. There are parades, sports and cultural activities like performing traditional folk dances and drama to commemorate Atatürk and his companions from the beginning of the national struggle in 1919. July 20th - Peace and Freedom Day - Turkish Intervention - Barış ve Özgürlük Bayramı July 20th 1974 is a very important day in the history of Cyprus. On the 15th July 1974 a coup d'état was organised by Greek armed forces who were against the then president, Archbishop Makarios and his government, in an attempt order to unify the island with Greece. On the 20th July 1974 Turkish troops intervened to provide a safe haven in the north of the island for the Turkish Cypriots. On Peace and Freedom Day there is a big military parade in Lefkosia and a flypast over Kyrenia harbour. August 1 - Social Resistance Day - Ulusal Direniş Bayramı This marks the founding in 1958 of the Turkish Cypriot resistance movement TMT. August 30 – Victory Day - Zafer Bayram Marking Turkey’s liberation from invading Greek troops in 1922. The victory is seen as a turning point in the foundation of Turkey, and is celebrated as a public holiday.

October 29 - Turkish Republic Day - Cumhuriyet Bayramı

To mark the foundation of the post-Ottoman Republic of Turkey in 1923. November 15 - Republic Day of T. R. N. C. - Cumhuriyet Bayramı Turkish Cypriots first proclaimed North Cyprus in 1975, a year after the split with the Greek Cypriots. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was established on 15 November 1983, by the Turkish Cypriot community and Turkish Cypriot Leader/Northern Cypriot State President Rauf Denktash. Its independenceis, however, recognised only by Turkey. Movable date - Sugar Bayram - End of Ramadan or Seker Bayram - Ramazan Bayramı or Şeker Bayramı Seker Bayram, which is also called the Sugar Festival, takes place at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan and will last for three days. This religious feast will be celebrated with family and giving presents and sweets to visitors. During this feast older members of the family will be respected by kissing their hands and many Turkish Cypriots will attend mosque. You will find in Nicosia, a fun-fair, traditional food and crafts. Restaurants in North Cyprus will usually be empty on the 27th night of Ramadan, which is known as Kadir Gecesi or the night the Koran was revealed to Muhammad. Movable date - Feast of the Sacrifice - Kurban Bayramı Kurban Bayram is a 4 day celebration and will starttwo months after the Seker Bayram. In the UK this is known as Ed-al-Adha.This feast will commemorate the sacrifice of Ishmael by Abraham, which is a Koranic version of the Abraham-and-Isaac story, and used to be distinguished by the sacrifice and roasting of many sheep. This custom however has faded in Cyprus but the festival isstill celebrated. Turkish Cypriots are among the laxest Muslims in the world in terms of observance, but most make the effort to abstain from alcohol during this period.

Public transport Public transport in North Cyprus is limited and you are better advised to hire a car. For those who do not want this extra cost, there are buses, but they are infrequent and do not run to a timetable. Lefkoşa is the main transport hub, and you’ll find dolmuş(minibuses) run to all of the major towns from the bus station in the north of the town. Fares are very reasonable (TL8 return by dolmuş between Lefkoşa and Girne, for example). The only problem is, many of North Cyprus’s main attractions are in isolated and remote locations far from any town or village. Hitchhiking is not unheard of, though the same potential risks apply as anywhere else in the world. Many locals can be seen hitching from Girne to Lefkoşa early in the morning.

Rent a Car in North Cyprus By far the best way for the visitor to travel is self-drive hire car. All you need is a UK or international driving licence, and vehicles can be picked up and returned at Ercan Airport to avoid taxi transfer costs, which amount to about TL70 one-way to Girne. The road network is generally good and is being regularly improved, with an increasing number of dual carriageways between the main towns. Car-hire rates are cheap. Traffic drives on the left – a hangover from British administration – though it’s worth keeping watch for the occasional rebellious exception! Most cars are right-hand drive, though you will also see left-hand drive vehicles, imported or visiting from Turkey.

Turtles in North Cyprus To watch the turtles is definitely the experienceof a lifetime! There are two types of Turtles you will find nesting in the beaches of North Cyprus. One is the Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta) and the Green Turtle (Cheloniamydas). They both lay their eggs along the coast ofCyprus, main areas are Alagadi, the Golden beach and the Karpaz Peninsula. In the Mediterranean the female will lay eggs between March and June and lay between 70 to 150 eggs, nested under warm sand. The hatching period begins in July to August. The hatchlings will emerge at night as the darkness gives them the best protection against predators. Turtles are protected in North Cyprus. The Society of Turtles (SPOT) was foundered in 1991, located in Alagadi a famous breeding ground. Here some more information if you are interested to watch the turtles or to support them: https://www.cyprusturtles.org/index.php

Water in Cyprus Water in Cyprus is supplied either by mains water from the local municipallity, via water tanker, or in some places people have a private water well.It is not wise to drink well water unless it has been analysed, asseptic tanks are the usual method of disposal of domestic wasteand sewage and therefore the well water could be affected and soak-ways are also used.It is best to buy drinking water from the many certified bottled supplies.

Cyprus has always suffered from a shortage of water. The country relies heavily on rain fall to provide household water and for a number of years now the average annual rainfall has been decreasing, while demand is increasing, due to local population growth, a growing number of tourists and foreigners moving to Cyprus. Underway at the moment is the biggest water project ever undertaken to bring water from Turkey to Cyprus.

This huge project is called the Northern Cyprus Water Supply Project (Turkish name KKTC su temin projesi) and is an international water diversion project which was designed to supply water for bothdrinking and irrigation from mountains in southern Turkey to Northern Cyprus via a pipeline under the Mediterranean Sea. Thisunique project is being carried out by the Turkish State Hydraulic Works (DSİ). It will consists of the construction of a dam and pumping station on both sides, as well as a pipeline of 107 km (66 miles) which will run mainly under sea. The construction will take place in four stages.

Weather North Cyprus Cyprus has a Mediterranean climatewith long hot summers and mild winters. The hottest months for Cyprusare July and August. The rainy months are December to February. Kyrenia is one of the warmest districts of the Mediterranean in midsummer with the coastal regions being the hottest. There are over 300 days of sunshine a year, the sea temperature is rarely below 16 C and rises to 28-30 C during summer months, making Northern Cyprus one of the healthiest places in the world in which to live. The air condition is excellent and many respiratory difficulties either disappear or significantly reduce as a consequence.

Summer Summer in Kyrenia is high temperatures and cloudless skies. The temperature of the hottest months of July and August soars to 34°C and sometimes even to 40°C. The Mediterranean Seaaround the island rarely falls below 16°C

Winter Winters are mild but also the wettest season in Cyprusis from December to February. A great deal of the rain descends in the surrounding Kyrenia mountain range so frequent that the weather in Kyrenia is much better than nearly anywhere else on the island. Winters in Northern Cyprus can still be exceptionally pleasant with temperatures still a mild 15°C.

The rest of the year has enjoyable weather. Regardless of when you travel you’re guaranteed a pleasing and dry stay, with the choice of a hot and sunny climate in the peak summer months or cooler more mild temperature in the winter.
