ABOUT THE BOOK: Who Moved My Cheese? An A-Mazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life

By Spencer Johnson, M.D.,

A group of old school friends is gathered for dinner and the topic of conversation gets on to change - in career, relationships and family life. One of those present contends that change no longer bothers him after having heard 'a funny little story' called Who Moved My Cheese? In this artful way, Spencer Johnson introduces the reader to his fable on how to cope positively with change.

Who Moved My Cheese? Is a story about change that takes place in a maze where four amusing characters look for “Cheese”- cheese being a metaphor for what we want to have in life, whether it is a job, a relationship, money, a big house, freedom, health, recognition, spiritual peace or even an activity like jogging or golf.

Each of us has our own idea of what Cheese is, and we pursue it because we believe it makes us happy. If we get it we often become attached to it, and if we lose it, or it’s taken away, it can be traumatic.

Story start with search of these four characters, in the maze for their favorite cheese. Every morning, the mice & the little people dressed in their running gear and headed over to Cheese Station C where they found their own kind of cheese. It was a large store of Cheese that Hem and Haw eventually moved their homes to be closer to it and built a social life around it. To make themselves feel more at home, Hem and Haw decorated the walls with sayings.

One morning, Sniff and Scurry arrived at Cheese Station C and discovered there was no cheese. This is where the story splits in two. Scurry and Sniff quickly accept the loss of the cheese and go off into the maze in search of other sources. The little people, because they have built their lives around the big cheese, feel they are the victim of some kind of fraud or theft. Yet this only makes things worse, as their clinging on ensures that they go hungry. Meanwhile, the mice move on and find new cheese.

The fable captures well that moment after we have lost a job or a relationship and we believe it is the end of the world. All the good things were in the previous situation, and all the future holds is fear. Yet Johnson's message is, instead of seeing change as the end of something, we must learn to see it as a beginning. We have all been told this, but sometimes motivation is lacking. To make himself accept reality, Haw writes this on the wall of the maze: "If you do not change, you can become extinct."

For life not to be wasted, it demands a level of risk and adventure. If you are willing to live this way, change loses its horror. In fact, the advancing person purposely creates change

because the world is not currently how they would like it. What the Little men, Hem and Haw, discover is that breaking through your fears makes you free.

CONCLUSIONHaw wrote down a summary of what he had learned on the largest wall of Cheese Station N and smiled as he looked at what he had learned:

Change Happens Anticipate Change Monitor Change

Adapt To Change Quickly Change Enjoy Change!

Be Ready To Change Quickly and Enjoy It Again.

Every individual has a different approach to deal with this change. While some sit back, blame God and pity their luck; some simply refuse to adapt to change. But there are others who are always ready and are quick on their feet to make the most of the change.
