NeuroTransformational Learning

by Joni Samples #189

Abstract

As an educator dealing with Special Needs students, I became interested in why this child’s brain in my program might be different from another child’s brain in a regular classroom clear back when I was working on my doctoral degree. At the time, what was known about the brain could probably have been taught in one class. Now, however, there is so much more information and I’m asking the question again. Why is this brain different from that brain? Or are the brains really different? Are the experiences and memories stored in those brain what’s different? Having more access to how the brain works allows more answers and even more speculation and it is time to look at those issues. If we are going to keep having children with special learning situations, and we are, then we need to look at why they think the way they do. We also need to look at what experiences and/or traumas a child has gone through and how they reacted to them. We need to look at parenting and the experiences of the parents as well as the past histories of the grandparents and even the great grandparents. This gets even more complicated than it looked at the beginning of my question, but it still has to be answered in order to address the issues. That’s the neurological part of the issue. If I want a child to learn something new, a new skill like reading, I need not just a change in thinking, but a real transformation in the way the child perceives him/herself. The full abstract is availble in the conference proceedings.

The Effective Use Of Visual Aids In The University Classroom

by Kaylea Berard # 147

Abstract

The benefits of visual aids in the foreign language classroom have been well-attested in the literature, as they help to clarify, organize, and make information more interesting and memorable. The creation of effective visual aids that serve students’ different learning styles and intelligences (Gardner 1983/2003) requires careful consideration and time. During this workshop, visual aids that were developed for the Spanish language university classroom will be shared, and guidelines for the creation of visual aids applicable to a variety of disciplines will be provided. No knowledge of the Spanish language is required.

Creating A STEM Outreach Day Event Or Week-Long Program For Elementary

And Middle School Students by Mary Conway Hanchar #212

Abstract

Science plays an important role in all of our lives, and this relevance is ever increasing as more attention is focused on solving problems in the environment, medicine, and engineering. The STEM workforce is crucial to America’s innovative capacity and competitiveness on a global scale. As educators, it is important for us to develop programming that emphasizes the importance of STEM in our world, educates our students and communities about the different careers available in STEM, and develops the skills needed for the future success of our students. Teaching STEM related content and skills cannot, and should not, be confined to the classroom, which is why the development of STEM outreach programming is so important. Creating a STEM outreach event can be daunting, but the rewards for students are immeasurable. These benefits, coupled with the fact that research supports a powerful link between the early learning of STEM skills to children who are better prepared for school and future STEM careers, make the organization and execution of these events a necessity. Educational outreach programs can be tailored to provide essential learning opportunities that address the needs identified in one’s own community. Within our community, identifiable needs include increasing the number of women who pursued higher level science courses and higher educational studies in the physical science and engineering fields. Therefore, both one day and week-long educational outreach opportunities focused on Girls in STEM were developed to encourage female interest in these normally underrepresented fields. Another important need within our community was the introduction and understanding of the fast-growing Nano-science field. A portion of the presentation will also address planning for this type of “STEM for all” style event focused on this new innovative field. This presentation will concentrate on the framework necessary to create STEM outreach programming for both day and week-long events. Often, educators will think about hosting an educational event but find it difficult to decide how to get started. This presentation will offer suggestions, guidelines and best practices used to provide high quality, engaging programming that incorporates schools, local businesses and the community.

Teaching Corporate Financial Management Using Coca-Cola

by Carl B. McGowan, Jr. #187

Abstract

Case analysis is an accepted approach to teaching corporate finance and of providing student with approximate real world experience. An alternative method of providing real world experience is to use real companies to teach corporate financial management. This workshop is designed demonstrate how to provide students with the experience of applying corporate financial management theory to a real company – Coca-Cola. In addition, students learn how to value a company, by computing all the variables needed to apply the Free Cash Flow to Equity Model to Coca-Cola such as sustainable growth, long-term growth, beta, required rate of return for equity, as well as the optimal capital structure, and the Black-Scholes option pricing model. Students learn to use the internet to compile actual data in Excel spreadsheets, to construct power point presentations, and to write word documents. Both critical thinking skills and data analytic skills are developed using this approach to teaching corporate financial management both of which are valuable for AACSB affirmation and for job qualifications.
