VFV Attorneys is a legal firm that provides a wide range of commercial legal services to its clients.
In order to apply our expertise and enhance our experience we understand that in order to provide sound and efficient legal advice to our clients, we need to keep ourselves abreast with the developments in law and in business.

OUR PEOPLE
The firm was started by Schalk van der Merwe in 1979 and now boasts 6 Partners. VFV has committed itself to a rapid growth in order to become a truly South African firm of attorneys and to provide a more comprehensive service to our clients.
We have a staff compliment of over 80 people, consisting of:
• 7 Partners, two of whom are admitted Conveyancers and one a Notary;
• 7 Professional Assistants, two also being Conveyancers and Notaries;
• Candidate attorneys; and• Our valued support staff.

SCHALK VAN DER MERWE
Schalk was admitted as an attorney in 1978, as a Conveyancer in 1980 and as a Notary Public in 1985. He has extensive experience in property related work both in commercial and residential developments. This wealth of experience and expertise has seen Schalk acting as a project coordinator for a number of property development projects, commercial and residential. He also serves on the boards of directors of various property development and investment companies. Schalk has, for more than ten years, served as a member of the Property Law Committee of the Pretoria Attorneys Association and also served as Chairperson. He is also a member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces and he was appointed by the Minister as drafter and examiner of the board exam for Notaries, and currently serves as convenor of this panel.
His qualifications in tax law and company law were born of a need by property developers to create the best tax-structures within which to conduct their business.

GEOFF FERREIRA
Geoff was admitted as an attorney in 1981. Geoff who is also a Certified Fraud Examiner has extensive experience in company law in general and being an Insolvency Practitioner is regularly consulted by such practitioners on a wide range of insolvency related matters. He also presides regularly over insolvency enquiries. He was a guest lecturer in Company Law, and Forensic Accounting and Fraud Investigations at the University of Pretoria. Geoff has acted as a panelist at the National Conference on the New Bankruptcy Act with a focus on Personal Liability of Directors and Auditors for Company Debts.
Geoff has recently been involved in various applications in terms of the new Companies Act 71 of 2008 such as applications to declare directors delinquent and business rescue applications.

JAN VAN WYK
Jan was admitted as an attorney in 1992 and as a conveyancer in 1997. Jan has extensive experience in commercial law, drafting of commercial agreements, insolvency law, family law and insurance law. As a conveyancer, Jan also deals with property related and property development issues and acted as project manager on various commercial property developments. Jan is also involved both in a managerial as well as in an advisory capacity in other companies and business initiatives.
Jan also has under his control a collections department in charge of debt collections for various clients including the collection of recoveries for major insurance companies.

MELISSA MARITZ
Melissa was admitted as an attorney on 26 August 2003. Before joining VFV, Melissa was a clerk to the Judge President of the Transvaal Provincial Division, the Honourable Mr Justice BM Ngoepe.
At VFV Melissa has been involved in matters in the Competition Tribunal, High Court matters, the Labour Court, the CCMA and various arbitrations in terms of the Arbitration Act and agreements between the parties. The experience in commercial litigation gained at the High Court and in practice has placed Melissa in a vantage position to advise on commercial agreements and corporate law in general.
Melissa has recently been focusing on customs and excise disputes and acts on behalf of various clients in this regard.

BERTUS LOUW
Bertus was admitted as an attorney in 2003. He specialises in commercial litigation, insurance and corporate law, corporate recoveries and building and construction law. At VFV Bertus has been involved in High Court matters, and various arbitrations in terms of the Arbitration Act including landlord and tenant and building disputes.
Bertus acts for various clients in the insurance industry.

Managing Partner
HEIN BEUKES
Hein completed his articles at VFV under the mentorship of Jan van Wyk and was admitted as an attorney in 2010. During the past few years, Hein has built up an extremely successful family law practice.
Hein specialises in all family related legal matters, inclusive of custody disputes, divorces, contact rights, etc. Hein also regularly appears in the municipal and criminal courts and has defended various clients successfully in these proceedings.
Hein has also gained experience in building disputes and has acted in a number of related matters.

HemishaGihwala
Hemisha obtained her LLB degree in 2015 from the University of South Africa (UNISA). She joined VFV in 2014 as a candidate attorney and was admitted as an attorney on 24 August 2016. She has acquired experience in a diverse set of legal issues ranging from Road Accident Fund matters and insurance litigation to debt collection as well as liquidation proceedings.

Our expertise includes traditional collections for the medical fraternity, Insurance Collections on liability matters arising from motor vehicle accident claims, as well as corporate collections on professional fees and penalties.
Our Call Centre also provides a niche administration service in the submission and management of claims on behalf of MPA Methodical Practice Administrators, and their clients. The services includes switching and verification of claims to Medical Aids, management of accounts and pre-legal services as well as legal collections.

COLLECTION SERVICES
MANAGING DEBTORSWe advocate management of debtors, rather than collection of bad debt. As a result, first contact is always a customer service exercise on behalf of our client and we focus on effectively communicating the magnitude of the problem of arrear accounts, whilst at the same time providing an affordable solution to the debtor. Our success on early management of debtors effectively reduces bad debt write-offs as well as proves to retain customers for the continuation of a long term relationship.
LEGAL COLLECTIONS
In those instances where it is required either as instruction from our client, or as a result of truly delinquent accounts, the legal collection process is initiated. Until a matter becomes formally opposed however, it remains in the call centre, where follow up communication with the debtor takes place through telephone calls, sms messages and e-mails.
cONTINGENCY BASED COLLECTIONSThe Collections Department operates on the principal of no success, no fee, and accepts instructions on a contingency basis.
