Focus on NEW FIAT DUCATO

Born to be a motorhome

Fiat Ducato is the absolute leader in theMotorhome industry, with an impressive75% market share in Europe. This

because the vehicle is “born to be a motorho-me”: engineered in all details together withthe main motorhome producers to provide thebest product to drive and live in. It has thewidest offer range with 600 special versionsfor motorhome conversion. FIAT PROFESSIO-NAL is much more than just a “chassis manu-facturer”: it is an industrial partner for motor-home producers. The workmate and travelcompanion of more than 2.6 million customersalong 33 years of continuous innovation. TheAtessa Italian plant, where Ducato is manufac-tured, is the biggest commercial vehicles’ pro-duction facility in the world, with a total areaof over a million square meters, a maximumproduction capacity of 300,000 units per yearand 4.6 million vehicles delivered since its start-up in 1981.

In 2013, with 133,000 units sold, the fifth generation of the Ducato represen-ted 30% of Fiat Professional sales worldwide. In Europe, following constantgrowth through the years, with 19% of the share, the Ducato achieved the bestresults ever in 2013, to the extent of becoming one of the most authoritativeleaders in the EMEA region. Over the years the Fiat Ducato has crossed theEuropean borders to reach Russia, Latin America, the Middle East and Australia. It is currently marketed in more than 80 countries worldwide, including NorthAmerica which, since last year, sees it in a starring role, going by the name of“PROMASTER” under the RAM brand. Made in 3 countries (Mexico, Brazil andItaly) and commercialised throughout the world, the Fiat Ducato is a truly 'glo-bal' vehicle that, in its sixth generation, will drive the growth of Fiat ChryslerAutomobiles in the light commercial vehicles sector. “In the motor home equipment sector, we have four divisions operating in thefour main world markets: South America, North America, Europe and AsiaPacific,” comments Norbert Noguès, Light Commercial Vehicles SalesConverters Manager. “I handle the European side, but as the RV world is fairlysmall, the four divisions often work together on shared solutions. We are theEuropean leaders with a 75% share; in Australia, we have a strong foothold, even though the market is very caravan-focused. But I think the most interestingplace for us will be the United States, where since last year Ducato has beenrebadged as PROMASTER and is marketed under the RAM Brand. There, wehave been a trusted supplier to the manufacturer Winnebago, which wantedthe Fiat Ducato for a long time, as they knew of our success in Europe.Winnebago has produced a low-profile coachbuilt motorhome with a wind-upbed in the front area and a van. Demand stateside for compact, easy-to-handlevehicles is growing, and we are confident that this will prove a profitable niche.Of course, a small vehicle is not inherently a basic one. As in Europe, vans andlow-profile coachbuilt motorhomes are lightweight, fuel-efficient and compactbut not necessarily cheap. On the contrary, some van models are high-end pro-ducts, especially in Germany and the UK.” With sales at more than 430,000 units in 2013, Fiat Ducato is among the big-gest player in the light commercial vehicles sector. Ducato is sold across theworld: 250,000 units in Europe, Africa and Middle East, nearly 180,000 in LatinAmerica (under the FIAT Brand) and the rest in Asia, Pacific, and CentralAmerica. And this figures do not take into account North America, where sincelast year Ducato has been rebadged as PROMASTER and is marketed under theRAM Brand. The economic investment on the new Ducato sums up to a total of700 million euro in 5 years. On the model worked a dedicated team of 6,600people from designers to shopfloor workers.

The new Fiat Ducato is the latest evolution of a bestseller which for 33 years - through its 5 generations -confirms it is the best travel companion for more than2.6 million of clients who have chosen it since 1981

Convertersprogramme

For the launch of the New Ducato, the FiatProfessional brand presents a brand-new pro-gramme of collaboration with the world of

converters: “Fiat Professional for Converters”. Theinitiative aims to reinforce the position of the brandin the market of converted vehicles, a sector expe-riencing continuous growth: already in Europe, onevehicle in three undergoes conversion. Starting with the New Ducato – the recreational out-fitting base used most extensively throughoutEurope – companies specialising in conversions canbecome members of the programme and access allthe information, guidelines and technical specifica-tions that are essential for outfitting Fiat Professionalvehicles in the most correct and straightforward wayto achieve the highest possible quality. In detail, members of “Fiat Professional forConverters” will have access to a dedicated websiteand can contact a team of specialists, available bothto answer any technical enquiry and to provide advi-ce for developing new products. This all spells clearbenefits for converters, who will be able to count ona direct and immediate relationship with FiatProfessional which makes their work simpler, moreeffective and more profitable. But the benefits also extend to the end customers, since vehicles outfitted by members of the ‘FiatProfessional for Converters’ programme offer grea-ter reliability and greater quality because they resultfrom close collaboration with the makers of themechanical base, who know all of its secrets and canadvise on how to get the best out of it.From mobile workshops to vehicles with variousbodies, from insulated vehicles to those with refrige-rated chamber, from motorhomes for recreations tovehicles for public services. In short, there’s no pro-fessional activity or mobility requirement that can’tbe met by converted Fiat Professional vehicles, asdemonstrated also by collaboration with the bestoutfitters in the sector of special equipment for assi-sted mobility.

Focus on NEW FIAT DUCATO

Interview with Alessandro Sannia

Alessandro Sannia, Product Manager Recreational Vehicles and Converter tells us about the new Fiat Ducatofeatures and enhancements with particular attention to the needs of converters

What are the key differences between this new model andthe old one? How does the Ducato for motorhome conver-sion differ from the version for professional use?

We have thoroughly revamped the Ducato both aesthetically and mechani-cally, although we have intentionally left the rear end unchanged. We didnot feel it appropriate in these straitened times to force the body-makers toradically alter the motor homes’ equipment or bodies without adding value. We have modified the front structure on the chassis cowl, but the manu-facturers need only adapt the connecting brackets. We began from a solidbase: from its launch in 2006, the Ducato was available in two ranges foruse as a commercial vehicle or for leisure pursuits. This version also enjoysa series of features devised for recreational vehicles, like the special gearratios and dedicated suspension. The Ducato is supplied from the factorywith no rear end or roof (for the chassis cab version). Thus, the safety beltsare fully functional even without the upper crossbeam of the cabin. Wehave aimed to go even further with the new Ducato, on 3 main fronts; oneis immediately visible – style. Naturally, the new Ducato’s looks are mainlyshaped by its success in the camper sector. Attractive lines do no harm ona commercial vehicle, of course, but they are more important for a leisurevehicle. The Ducato is the most tailorable in its class: we have various set-ups for the front grille and headlamps. We even offer the lights with bulbsand LEDs in two different colors to go with the colored or black grille. Thesecustom details are hard to find even on an upmarket saloon car, never mind

a commercial vehicle. The new front volumes make the front pillars connectto the radiator grille through the headlights. A “face” that makes Ducatounique and recognizable at the first sight. We introduce new aesthetic fea-tures: painted bumpers now also available with factory anti-fog lights, awider front grille, with either black or silver treatment (when the front gril-le is black, also front headlights are framed in black), 2 skid-plates (alumi-num or black) to further underline horizontal lines, body color or aluminumdoor handles, and new alloy wheels with diamond-cut effect. The frontoverhang has not been modified and this translates into an excellent ratiobetween overall length and cargo length, particularly useful for the motor-home living compartment. But we have improved quality, durability andrepairability. We have designed a specific cowl to protect the engine bayfrom the outside, we have simplified the hood by eliminating separate pla-stic trim-plates, we have positioned the headlamps out of the impact zoneand divided the front end in 4 parts to make repairs more rapid and lesscostly.

Your second development strand concerns the mechanical side, doe-sn’t it?That’s right. Looking at the trends in the camper sector, we noted both arenewed interest in small, compact vehicles for young families new to thecamper world and, on the other hand, a continual tendency towards largerdimensions. For the former, we gave the vehicle a slimming treatment.

Working on materials and components,we managed to balance the weightincrease caused by body reinforcementsand to reduce the new Ducato kerbweight by up to 20 kilos on chassis cabs. Moreover we developed an exclusiverear composite suspension option, thatensures an additional weight reductionof 15 kilos. New Ducato is the only vehi-cle in its category to feature this specificsuspension, designed for the motorho-me mission. Don’t forget that Ducato ismade to carry 3.65 tons. Then there arethe larger campers, for which we cannow offer a 4.4-ton version (and a totalweight of 6.5 tons, including towing),now with the admittable weight on rearaxle at 2,500 kilograms, useful forlonghoverhangs and garages. We introdu-ced extra reinforcements in key vanbody joints and door frames and impro-ved door hinges, rollers, sealings andstoppers. Then we developed a series of features offering important userbenefits, especially as regards operating costs. Brakes have been upgradedto reduce wear and tear, increase comfort and decrease noise by cuttingbrake-pedal force (thanks to a new pedal box) and upgrading performan-ce and durability, thanks to new pads, disks and boosters and a new brakesystem for heavy motorhomes. On front suspension we redesigned the topmount and added new seals to avoid infiltrations, reduce noise and (again)increase durability. Also the durability of the clutch has been enhanced. Anew hydraulic actuator has been introduced on the 2.3 engine. The gearratio reduction on the 3-litre engine minimizes clutch effort and maximizesperformance – with a particular focus on heavy use. We keep on usingdedicated gearbox ratio fitting with the motorhome usage. The 16" whe-els are now available on the standard Ducato range, also in alloy with newdesign. The engine range offered is the same, in four power units of 115, 130, 150and 180 hp to suit the vehicles’ mission, but with 10% lower fuel consum-ption on average compared to the previous generation.

And your third aim was to enhance the comfort…For heavy motorhome applications we offer as option new higher coilsprings to raise up the front end of the vehicle and to assure maximumcomfort also with heavy loads on front axle. When travelling, all factorscontribute to a relaxing trip the torque performance of the engines, theimprovement of suspensions and brakes and the Comfort-Matic automa-ted gearbox. Thought for the motorhome mission, the “up” function of theComfort-Matic gearbox provides a faster gearshift and specific manage-ment in heavy loads or hills conditions. Since we added the robotized gear-box for the 2300 cc engine, too, volumes have continued to increase. Over70% of the 3000 cc models have a robotized gear change. The proportionreduces as the power decreases, naturally, because the vehicles are lessexpensive, but it remains in double figures: at around 15/20% on the130 hp version and 40% on the 150 hp. But comfort depends not only onmechanical matters. The swiveling captain chair is first of a new generationof Ducato seats: more comfortable, ergonomics and specifically designedwith the style and shape more diffused on leisure vehicles. It includes inte-grated headrests, wider backrest and provides a better lateral restraint, soyou can drive your motorhome, but also enjoy your holiday seated on acomfortable sofa. These new seats can also be supplied without upholste-ry allowing the choice by the motorhome producers.

Have you also worked on the electronics, i.e. the installations usingthe CAN bus standard? No. We had a step change in only 2011 with the Ducato Euro 5 and its new29-bit network. What might interest the leisure sector is that we have crea-ted a gateway, by opening the CAN up to systems outside the network viaan interface module. Currently, we are using this only with the large fleetoperators, which need to see consumption data and usage statistics. Whenthe technical studies on electronics for recreational vehicles get to grips withthe vast challenge of interfacing directly with a vehicle’s CAN, then integra-ted domotics will become possible. If anyone would like to work on it withus, we are available. One day, I expect that the vehicles will have a touchscreen controlling even the living-compartment systems; technically, it isachievable. The Ducato has several new electronic systems, primarily forsafety features – like ESC, for instance. Developing a stability-control systemfor a car is relatively easy, because the vehicle is used in the same state asit leaves our factory: add the luggage, and that’s it. For the equipment sec-tor, however, we manufacture a chassis cab or chassis cowl that can thenbe built on in many different ways. Therefore, we have had to design a fle-xible system with hydraulic units to detect where the centre of gravity is andadapt the ESC to react to the actual configuration of the fully equippedvehicle.

Have you also taken account of the AL-KO AMC chassis?Yes. We have made all these developments with AL-KO in mind; they are avery important partner for us. Fiat Ducato is unique in being fully integra-ted across the whole AL-KO range, including six-wheelers and vehicles withextra-long wheelbases, with ESC devised by Fiat and Bosch together withAL-KO. The ESC stability control is available in all versions, up to the AL-KOTAG-Axle chassis ones, upgraded with roll-over mitigation to improve com-fort and keep the motorhome stable. It also features load adaptive control,ASR and hill holder. But the new Ducato offers a wide set of optional hi-tech devices, all available on the full range of AL-KO version, such as theTyre Pressure Monitoring System. Moreover, it is the first and only in its classto present the combination of Traction+ and Hill Descent Control. NewDucato, depending on the Motorhome versions, offers also other hi-techdriving aids such as Lane Departure Warning System (that alerts when thevehicle moves out of its lane), Traffic Signal Recognition (that identifies traf-fic signs on the road) and High Beam Recognition (that automaticallyadjusts headlamp range to the distance of oncoming vehicles).

Brianza Plastica keeps forging ahead in the recreational-vehiclesector. In particular, the Italian firm has recently opened a branchin Elkhart, USA, specifically to be close to a market that is very dif-

ferent from its European counterpart but not less important. BrianzaPlastica has been working to support the road-transport sector for sometime, although the business began well before that, over half a centuryago. Set up in 1962 to produce fibreglass laminates, Brianza Plastica hascontinued to diversify its output, working mainly for the constructionindustry. Its product range – including Isotec insulating panels, for exam-ple – is a mainstay of both the residential and the industrial constructionsectors. Between 2006 and 2008, the company moved into the tran-sport world, incorporating two manufacturing sites for discontinuouslamination technology and expanding the central HQ at Carate Brianzawith a new continuous-lamination production line. In recent years,Brianza Plastica has been working increasingly closely with the vehicleindustries, especially refrigerated-lorry and recreational-vehicle manufac-turers. “Motorhomes are no longer a minor segment for us and are now

worth 15% of our turnover,” explains Alberto Crippa, Brianza PlasticaMD. “We supply several major European and American camper andcaravan manufacturing groups”.Many motorhome producers have now moved from aluminium to fibre-glass coverings for the living-compartment panels. Accordingly, the firmproduces fibreglass laminates devised specially for recreational-vehiclemanufacturers: Elyplan and Elycold ranges. The fibreglass sheets aresuper-thin – just a few millimetres thick – and very light but extremelystrong, made by impregnating a fibreglass mat with polyester resin.Elyplan is a laminate made with a continuous production line using hotpolymerisation. Through dedicated technology, the maximum possiblepolymerisation of the composite material is achieved, for a smooth pro-duct with tight dimensional tolerances. Continuous production offersreal economic benefits over discontinuous technology, with excellentaesthetic qualities that, in the High Finishing version, rival the finest lami-nates made with discontinuous methods. Elyplan is therefore the bestsolution when the key factors are mechanical strength, dimensional tole-

Brianza Plastica’s fibreglass laminates have become “go to”products in the camper sector. In an extensive product cata-logue, the essential Elyplan line of continuous laminates com-plements the Elycold range based on cold polymerisation.

rances, and value for money – e.g. for roofsand platforms, as well as camper and motorhome interiors.Equally, the higher - performance variants alsofind effective use in internal or external fini-shings, as Alberto Crippa explains: “For motor-home’s internal finishing, on the living-compar-tment side, that is, the Elyplan laminate is anexcellent solution. The continuous-manufactu-ring method drives down costs, and the pro-duction technology allows us to combine theproduct with printed paper for a wood-effector other finish. We have already successfully

used these techniques in the residential-con-struction sector, for example to build qualityinternal doors.” Elyplan laminates come in rollsand sheets up to 3200 millimetres wide. Thereis no theoretical limit on the length, which isagreed to suit the customer’s requirements.Elycold laminates, conversely, are made on adiscontinuous production line with cold poly-merisation. The process of polymerisation atambient temperatures avoids thermal shocksand ensures a top-quality product with a per-fect flat finish. Courtesy of the selected rawmaterials and a production method that priori-tises results over speed, Elycold fibreglass she-ets emerge with a superlative aesthetic effectthat is ideal where a smooth, shiny, totally flatsurface is required. The application par excel-lence is outer walls for campers – the sides andrear – although Elycold is often used to makethe roofs, too. Elycold laminates, finished withgelcoat, are made in rolls and sheets up to3400 millimetres wide and 60 metres long.“We have been producing fibreglass for overhalf a century,” concludes Alberto Crippa, “sowe have considerable experience with thetechnology. Precisely because we work both inthe construction industry and in transport,Brianza Plastica is now the European biggestfibreglass manufacturer: our production lines

output around 10 million m2 of laminatesevery year. But we are also the only supplierthat can offer flat laminates made with bothtechnologies – continuous and discontinuousproduction.” The firm from Carate Brianzavaunts a truly vast catalogue, from the mostcost-effective products to the top of the range. But don’t forget their flexibility, which enablesthem to complete advanced projects and meetreal customer needs. Brianza Plastica’s wor-kshops create laminates in a wide spectrum ofcolours, thicknesses and finishes, and the com-pany can supply small quantities and majororders alike.

Elyplan and Elycold*Elyplan laminates are made using continuous techno-logy, both with and without a gelcoat finish. Thicknessescan vary from 1 to 2.5 mm; the maximum width is 3200mm, and lengths are agreed on request. The internalfinish can be smooth or mechanically sanded, althoughthe “Corona” treatment is also available (with a smallelectrical discharge to facilitate bonding). The range alsoincludes Elyplan Design with printed-paper finish (maxwidth 220 cm), Elyplan Extra Glass with high glass fibrecontent (for excellent rigidity and low specific weight),and Elyplan High Finishing (where the fibres are lessvisible on the surface).* Elycold laminates are produced using discontinuoustechnology with a gelcoat finish. Thicknesses can varyfrom 1 to 4 mm. The maximum width is 3400 mm; themax length, 60 metres. Elycold can be made only with glass fibres with MAT, or withMAT plus woven matting (for greater strength). Various internal finishes are offered:smooth, rough, and sanded mechanically or with a film (to counteract dust and enhan-ce bonding). The range also includes Elycold Lite and Elycold Xlite, special laminatesfor greater thickness at no extra weight, and therefore greater rigidity and flatness, whilemasking the underlying structures.

Brianza Plastica was set up in 1962 toproduce fibreglass laminates. Over

time, it has significantly extended its mar-ket presence with a comprehensive pro-duct range. It has served the constructionindustry from day one and has been enjo-ying increasing success in the transportsector since 2006. In this arena, it suppliesfibreglass sheets both to manufacturers ofrecreational vehicles (campers and cara-vans) and to lorry and refrigerated-trailerproducers. PC380 and DS470: just made for each other

Introduced for the 2014 series, thePC180 was the first in a new family ofcontrol panels designed by CBE to offer

OEM customers an extensive range of pro-ducts, proposing the same family feeling bet-ween the entry level and higher classes. Thisinitial panel in the Basic range has now beenupgraded with the PC380, a premium pro-duct that reiterates the same design, dimen-sions and control button positions, but nowincludes a centrally set 4,7” LCD screeninstead of the LED indicators of the PC180. Aspecial feature of the screen is that it is illu-minated in negative, i.e. illuminated in blackwith headings appearing in any of the other13 available colours. Equipped with backlitbuttons, the PC380, as well as the entry levelmodel, has a light sensor that automaticallyadjusts the brightness according to theambient light level. This feature allows whoe-ver is sleeping in the front bunk, for instan-ce, not to be annoyed by the lighting on thepanel, which, if assembled above the door, could be at eye level. Just like on the PC180, the control buttonson the PC380 are mechanical. Unlike mem-brane buttons, this solution provides a tacti-le feeling and ensures greater resistance towear over time. An evolution of the PC320model, this new panel no longer consists ofa main casing and outer frame (as for all of

the older panels): it is a single unit, assem-bled by means of two springs in a hole boredinto the plywood. This allows for a simplerand quicker installation for builders. An inte-resting implementation on this panel (whichis sold at around triple the price of thePC180) is the possibility of interfacing withthe software via a USB port on the motherboard. This allows for easy software upgra-des, as well as the customization of alarmsby changing the trigger thresholds. ThePC380 is of course also designed to replaceprevious generation panels without requiringany components of the existing installationto be changed. The new panel features thefollowing primary functions: graphic typeand Volt control for the status of the car bat-tery and battery services; service battery cur-rent charging and discharging control; a per-centage control chart and graphics for thestatus of the fresh water tank and greywater; management of 3-way refrigeratorfunctions; electronic integrated battery sepa-rator; car battery recharging; under-voltagecontrol (“save battery” function); digitalclock; indoor and outdoor temperaturedisplay. The PC380 makes the most of all its functionswhen combined with a latest generationdistribution panel such as the all-new DS470,also equipped with BUS technology and

capable of communicating with the panel. An evolution of the DS450, on this newdistribution board (as for all other 12 Voltdistribution boards) the outputs are protec-ted by fuses, there are relays for the lights, pump, external light, refrigerator and batte-ry connection, including a dimmer node con-nection.

At the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, CBE will be presenting the PC380, the latest in a new generation of controlpanels, together with the new DS470 distribution board, designed to dialogue with CBE panels, integrating thebattery separator and ammeter, and equipped with a new SOS function.

However, compared to other products on themarket, the new DS470 integrates functionsthat normally require the use of additionalexternal equipment, meaning additionalwiring, codes, and labour time for assembly. In fact, this evolved distribution board inte-grates the battery separator (ensuring thecharging of car and service battery when dri-ving) and an ammeter of sufficient power tomanage the power consumption of mostmedium to high range vehicles (up to ± 80amps). The DS470 distribution board can bereplaced by the RB450 model, for customersrequiring a flush board assembly rather thana wall mount. A useful and innovative feature on the newDS470 is the so-called SOS function.Although CBE products are built to thehighest quality standards, these componentstoo might be sensitive, e.g. to electric shockor external disturbances. In the rare event ofa failure to the control panel or distributionmodule, a drawback of modern systems isthat more often than not almost nothing isworking, not even basic users such as theheater, water pump and lights. On the con-trary, thanks to the DS470 built-in SOS fun-ction, end customers just need to insert afuse in the fuse casing, to provide directpower for the heater, water pump and lights. This allows end customers to ensure thattheir vehicle will complete its journey beforebeing brought in for servicing. In terms of accessories, CBE features a fullrange of products that complete system. Fortank level measurements, CBE electronic hascapacitive probes that are custom designedin relation to the tank size and design. Themajority of CBE control panels manage up tothree sensors in standard configuration. Insituations where an electronic sensor cannotbe mounted because the tank doesn’t allowaccess in the upper section, CBE has develo-ped an interface to be connected to thedistribution module, and a special screw-onsystem fastened onto the tank wall.

The new PC210 panel represents an absolute novelty inCBE’s product philosophy. It is designed to be installedeven on the most compact vans, where the space betwe-

en the cell door and roof is reduced. Control panels are typicallyquite bulky, since they need to provide a large and clearly visiblemonitoring area, with cumbersome electronics, and buttons thatmustn’t be positioned too close to each other. And then, there’salso an aesthetic reason: in a large sized vehicle, a small panellooks somewhat inadequate. CBE has thus designed a new mid-priced panel (since pure campers are generally less costly thanmotorhomes) but with a slew of high-tech features. The custom

3” LCD display can make use of backlighting in 13 differentcolours. The panel features capacitive keys, i.e. touch sensitive, another novelty for CBE, which thus far had only made use ofmechanical controls, membrane buttons or touch screen. Thevisible part of its flat design is only 9 mm thick. The fasteningsystem is anchored to the plywood on the furnishings by meansof a support, which then retracts into the body of the panelthanks to a clutch pressure. The panel’s contemporary designrecalls the latest high-tech trends, both in terms of styling andmaterials, and will be making its world premiere appearance atthe Düsseldorf Caravan Salon.

CBE arrives in Japan, anddoes so by setting up apartnership with a first-

rate manufacturer: ToyFactory. CBE has supplied thispremier camper builder withhundreds of PC320 controlpanels, even customizingsome functions. Specifically, arequest was made to directlymanage the heating systemfrom the panel, in this case anAirtronic system byEberspächer, not just com-manding the ignition, but thetimer and the temperaturemanagement as well.

Considering the great success of the new trivalent profilepresented at the beginning of the year, CTA reproposesthis important accessory with which you can get multiple

applications inside the motorhome. The new fastener is the perfect combination between design andthe multiple applications that can be made inside an RV.The new fasteners are made of anodized aluminum, with protec-tive covers at both ends, guaranteeing great mechanical resistan-ce due to its internal geometry. The fastener can be secured with screws on a central axis fromthe outside, making it a perfect for aftermarket sales and instal-lation or the manufacturer can secure it on the inside of thevehicle, thus making the fastening screws invisible. The greatadvantage to manufacturers lies in that the same fastener can beinstalled in three different applications, for TV brackets, luggageracks or as a motorcycle anchoring device. For the first applica-tion, the fastener is screwed into the interior wall with specialscrews included in the kit. Along the central axis, the TV bracketcan be moved vertically until finding the desired position for the enduser. For the second application, the tracks can be placed as a lugga-ge rack. The modern automotive design is modern and refined andadaptable to all the latest RV models.

Thanks to the modular structure of the CTA luggage rack, this isextremely versatile and allows for multiple configurations to fit theavailable roof space and needs of campers. This modular configura-tion represents the evolution of previous models and offers furtherfastening systems.

Company Profile

C TA Srl has 35 years experience inthe automotive market, much of

which was dedicated to convertingvehicles and manufacturing specialorder metal structures of varioustypes. Its main customer base is auto-mobile manufacturers who requiredesign work, out sourcing manufac-turing, or post-sales assistance. Thevast experience and organizationalcapacity of the company has propel-led its rapid growth. The technicaldesign team has conducted manyinnovative studies to meet the needsof its customers for technologicaladvances.

The third application that CTA offers for the first time is the ability to use the kit asa motorcycle anchoring system by installation on the floor or wall of a garage. This profile works with special tie-downs that can be applied directly to the guide, without forcing the camper do this from the ends of the profile to add anchorpoints between the rings that are already in place. This advantage ensures the safe-ty of the bike also for closing the tie-down to soften. The same tie-down rings allows for the passage of cables, elastic springs or nutsneeded to adjust the bracket on the rail system with sliding adjustable positioning, by pressing lightly on it.

Dimatec has updated its product line notjust in terms of design, but in techno-logy as well. The high-performance

SMD 5630 and Power LEDs (used primarily forspotlights) are now flanked by the new COB,currently applied on selected spots and LEDbars. The 200 LB 800 CD is just one of theinnovations proposed at the upcomingCaravan Salon in Düsseldorf: a LED bar thatincorporates a circuit equipped with a touchbutton that allows users to select the colortemperature, ranging without interruptionfrom 3200K to 6200K, i.e. from warm to coollighting. «We're keeping abreast in terms of technolo-gy development for LED systems, which aremoving ahead at an incredible pace, » statesAlexander Vohwinkel, Key Account Managerfor Dimatec. «Last year we presented an ultra-flat technology with the new SMD 5630 LEDs,and this year we're introducing the all-newCOB technology, and we have several pro-ducts already available. It's much more effi-cient and has a broader angle compared toconventional LEDs, providing a lighting effectthat is similar to incandescent or fluorescentlights, but with the duration and energy savingspecifications of LEDs. Up until just a few yearsago, when LED lighting systems on recreatio-nal vehicles were provided on high-endmodels only, seeing individual LEDs - whetherlit or even off - was a plus that certainly appea-led to designers. Today, the trend has movedtowards a more uniform lighting, hiding thedetails. Dotted lights are not pleasant, sowe're focusing on COB technology.»Dimatec is presenting new models in its line ofML ceiling fixtures; last year with 3 round andone oval version, now completed by a series ofrectangular ceiling lights offered in differentsizes. A special feature of the ML range, which

is available both with and without a centraltouch button, is its thin 10 mm design. Theline of ceiling light fixtures are offered in twoacrylic bases; the lower one with a mirrorfinish, and the upper one transparent with abrushed polish effect alongside the LEDs, whe-reas the support base and dissipater are in alu-minium. These models can be provided withsecondary lighting with customizable colorsand a touch button that varies the lightingintensity or switch on the secondary lightingonly. The acrylic bases, create a perimeter lightsetting around the body. «The new ML ceiling lights feature a simple, elegant, ultra-thin design,» continues

Vohwinkel, «A project that also allows us easi-ly create customized designs without exten-ding development or delivery times. This is animportant part of our production philosophyat Dimatec. We essentially operate with twoproduction modes: on the one hand, we pro-vide standard products we develop in line withour creative ideas, and on the other hand wecreate exclusive product designs. Dimatec isrenowned in terms of distribution and compo-nents, but in the lighting sector we want toemphasize that we're a manufacturer first andforemost. We have our own moulds, equip-ment and designers, even though productionactually takes place in China and Taiwan.

When lighting is also innovation and creativityDimatec will be making an appearance at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon for thesecond consecutive year (Hall 13 - Stand E85), presenting a wide range of proposals, many of them innovative products. Starting with its range of ML ultra-flat ceiling fix-tures featuring a touch button, right up to Awning lighting systems, arm support spo-tlights, recessed spotlights, LED bars, and the all-new vehicle tail lights.

We're an essential partner for recreational vehicle manufacturers, because we can propose solutions that satisfy design criteria while pro-viding the best lighting conditions, taking into account available budge-tary considerations.»Among the innovative products is the new AW7 awning light, whichinherits the appealing design of the smaller AW5, in a much longer ver-sion. Launched in 2012, the AW5 was a best seller, but its dimensionsof just 364 mm in length rendered it aesthetically unsuitable on theexternal walls of vehicles over seven on eight meters long. Hence thenew AW7, equipped with a drain channel for door top installation, measuring 635 mm in length and providing roughly 40% more lightingpower. Innovative ideas for garage lights as well, now updated fromneon lighting to LED technology. The new 200 GBL3BT is designed tobe installed in the gas bottle compartment, a space that is often dark, and where lighting is required for changing bottles during the night. The light is fully sealed, integrating a touch button, which is also her-metically sealed, in accordance with regulatory standards. «We can provide systems for any type of recreational vehicle: fromsmaller pure campers to caravans, cells for pick-ups, entry level motor-homes and more expensive vehicle models, including Premium motor-homes,» continues Vohwinkel, «With a consolidated customer base,we're also in a position to develop projects for small series. Although itmay not be commercially relevant, this activity allows us to work hand in hand with the Research and Development team, proces-sing new ideas and solutions that often lead to interesting inputs.»Yet another innovation is the range of support arm spotlights, entirely

revisited by eliminating the models that were no longer up-to-date, andreplacing 80% of them with newer versions. The new tail lights series will also be showcased, proposing models forrear third brake lights, multi-function bumper encased lights (stoplights, fog lights, reverse and turn signalling lights), marker lights andLED bars. «We weren't expecting so much success for a new series that lies a lit-tle outside our normal range of expertise,» concludes Vohwinkel,«Instead, already after the previous Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, we sup-plied the Sea group and the British manufacturer Bailey. This year, we'reready to further develop this new range of Dimatec products. We'll bepresent at the German trade fair with a stand that is nearly double com-pared to last year.»

Aspecialist supplier of lighting for recreational vehicles,Dimatec S.p.a. has been in business for over three deca-des. Established in 1983, it traces its roots even further

back, to when founder Richard Pirovino began operating in theoriginal-equipment industry as long ago as 1974. In 1989, thefirm entered the lighting sector with its own range of lamps; afew years later, it launched Veralux, a 12-Volt, 11-Watt fluore-scent outdoor lamp that soon became a bestseller in the cara-vanning market. Dimatec operates both in the original-equip-ment market and in the aftermarket. We sell our own productswhile also acting as sales agents bringing together recreational-vehicle manufacturers and component producers, offering ahuge gamut of accessories and spares. Dimatec has been ISO9001:2000-certified from November 1999. Ever since, the com-pany has worked tirelessly to enhance its internal processes forreaching its objectives while constantly striving to provide betterand better customer service. In 2009, we upgraded our certifi-cation to the new ISO 9001:2008 standard.

Eberspächer's fuel-efficient heaters use diesel from the vehicle tank and can be operated anywhere in the world while traveling. As theusual heating gas cylinders are not required, more storage room is available and fewer problems arise with different connections abro-ad. Omitting the heavy gas cylinders is also an advantage in terms of load capacity. This is an important consideration for 3.5 t vehi-

cles whose maximum permissible gross laden weight is already frequently utilized to full capacity with travel equipment for short trips.

For the cockpit and engine: Hydronic Water HeaterIn some types of motor home, the front area is chronically undercooled. Hydronic 2 Comfort is theanswer to this problem. The highlight in the Eberspächer product range is integrated directly into thecooling circuit and is equipped with a patented thermal-hydraulic control. At the beginning of the hea-ting phase, it shuts off the flow of warm water in the direction of the engine's cold pole. As the circu-lation only occurs between the heat exchanger and the heater during this phase, pleasant temperatu-res are soon obtained in the front area. If the coolant temperature exceeds 67 degrees Celsius, the ther-mal-hydraulic switching element also activates the circulation via the engine. This ensures an environ-mentally friendly warm start that also protects the engine.

For the interior: Airtronic air heatersThe great advantage of air heaters is that they heat up the interior very quic-kly. Because they are very economical in terms of electricity and diesel, theyhave a long service life. The average fuel consumption of the Airtronicmodels works out at approx. 0.2 litres per hour. The air heaters are alsopleasantly quiet and are easy to install as all models can also be fittedunderneath the vehicle. The Airtronic heaters are available with powerratings of two, three or four kilowatts. They also have a power setting forrapid heating and a continuously variable room temperature control.Measuring between 31 and 37 centimetres in length, the Airtronic models arethe most compact motor home heaters of their kind. The smallest of them, the Airtronic D2, is only the same size as a thermos flask and is thereforeoften used in campervans. With its seamless control range, the D3 model is thefirst choice for anyone who prefers an extremely quiet heater. The D4 plus, which delivers 4,000watts of power, is best suited to large motor homes. Last but not least, the Airtronic air heaters are characterized by their low output setting.Without needing to be frequently restarted, they maintain the temperature at a comfortable level at the lowest setting for a pleasant night'ssleep. They do this almost silently and using the minimum amount of electricity.

Heating specialist for more than 70 years:Eberspächer provides custom-made heaters formotor homes that are both convenient and eco-nomical. The models available range from sup-plementary heaters for retrofit installation toOEM solutions. The portfolio is complementedby a range of air vents to ensure optimum heatdistribution, climate control equipment and anoxidation catalytic converter for particularlyenvironmentally friendly heating.

Close to its customers at all timesWhen it comes to good service, it's important to be close at hand. With more than 2,500 locations throughout Europe, Eberspächer custo-mers will always find a service partner nearby.

Handy and convenient: control elements

Convenient control elements are a feature of all Eberspächer heaters. The EasyStartTimer and the telephone remote control EasyStart Call are particularly suitable formotor homes. The pre-heater can be programmed as required on board by the perma-nently installed EasyStart Timer. The settings range from the temperature setting to thefixed running times that can be set in pre-select mode. A large matrix display for clearfeedback and the straightforward configuration of the four large buttons mean thatthe timer can be controlled quickly and reliably. The EasyStart Call can be deployed ifthe pre-heater has to be operated from outside the motor home. The telephone remo-te control can be used to control the heater across any distance. Smartphone users canalso avail of the free EasyStart Call app. This displays an intuitive menu featuring seve-ral functions on the touchscreen of Apple and Android devices. EasyStart Timer andEasyStart Call can also be easily used in combination together.

Ebercool Holiday III– the right climate wherever you go

Spontaneous trips to southern climes or simply making the most of the summersun – an efficient cooling system is necessary to ensure comfort for all motor hometrips. Eberspächer's Ebercool Holiday III is the perfect cooling solution in such sce-narios. The economical 12V water-based stationary cooling system is supplied withelectricity directly via the service battery. The Ebercool Holiday III system works so

economically that it can also be operated for extended periods of time without requiring external power. This ensures complete free-dom for stops and stays at every stage of the trip. To ensure that there is always enough battery capacity to start the engine, an under-voltage protection feature automatically switches the device off if a specific limit is not reached. In addition, the evaporator coolingsystem also scores thanks to its unmatched quiet and environmentally friendly operation as it does not need a compressor or coolant.Installation kits for the roof hatch also make the installation very straightforward.

Oxidation catalyticconverter for EberspächerAirtronic diesel heaters

Anyone looking for a particularly environ-mentally friendly heater has the option ofthe oxidation catalytic converter for allEberspächer Airtronic diesel heaters. Itreduces emissions of the pollutants carbonmonoxide and hydrocarbons far below thestatutory limit values. Its compact structuremakes the small oxidation catalytic conver-ter quick and easy to integrate into theexhaust system where it requires no main-tenance.

Targeted warmth

Eberspächer's modular system of vents ensures that air heater systems can be easilyinstalled. The air hose just needs to be inserted into the fitting; no elaborate manoeu-vres using cable ties or clips are required. This makes it much easier to integrate the various elements at hard-to-reach spots. An optional air regulating element also ensures the optimum distribution of warm

air if the motorhome has amulti-ductsystem.The covershave animpressivelymodern look. They are availa-ble in a choiceof black orwhite in a flator raised designand also comewith differentair flow direc-tions.

The sweet sound of locks clicking into place

Attendance at the DüsseldorfCaravan Salon is important, evencrucial, for all businesses in the

European recrea-t i o n a l - v e h i c l esector, vehiclemanufac tu re r sand componentproducers alike.FAP’s presencecannot passu n r e m a r k e d ,given the innova-tions unveiled bythis firm fromFlorence, the lea-ding maker oflocks for motor-homes and cara-vans. There aretwo novel featu-res, and they

build on the FAP range’s centrepiece: theGhost locking mechanism for camperdoors. Launched three years ago after abattery of rigorous lab tests simulating 5years of actual use through 12,000 closingcycles, this lock takes its lead from the

mechanisms used on cars, both in theiroperation and in their quiet

action. The product iseasy to install flush

with the doorand worksusing ap a t e n t e dsystem ofplastic-coa-

ted metallevers thatoffers one oreven two loc-king points.An automa-ted versionis nowavai lable ,with ad o o r - l o c -king servo-mechanism

cannot fail to impress; it could even beco-me a strong selling point for recreational-vehicle manufacturers and vendors. “Whilethe Ghost lock was designed for high-endvehicles,” explains Lapo Ermini, FAP gene-ral manager and the founder’s grandson,“ the new offering, known as the SelfClosing System, goes further still. It aimsright for the top of the camper market, even though it could clearly become anattractive optional for mid-range models.”The concept is simple: just rest the living-compartment door on its frame, and thedoor will close on its own; a similar systemis used on the latest cars. So now, camper users can close thedoor without needing toslam it. With the SelfClosing System, the doorneed only be gentlypushed to. As the firststage of the mechanismkicks in, a sensor activa-tes an electric motor thatpositions the lock platesinto the frame and secu-rely fastens the lock.Naturally, the mechanismalso enables the door to beclosed in the traditional manner,by pushing it firmly all the way. The

Self Closing System does not trigger then, and Ghost behaves as usual, emitting thecharacteristic closure noise. And this is nominor feature. For when a well-crafted,“reassuring” sound accompanies a precise, smooth closure, customers perceive theproduct in a positive light and immediatelyconsider it to be of superior quality. The second innovation is called ONTOPand is surely destined for a wider, less elitemarket. It is a lock – or rather, the part of itinside the living compartment – that willreplace the more traditional, old-style locks

After its success on the American market, FAP has reasserted its presence in Europe with a new generationof basic locks while also looking to the high end with an automatic version of the Ghost model.

Leonardo conquersAmericaA long-established presence in theEuropean market, FAP has recently spreadits wings and ventured stateside, whererecreational vehicles have long enjoyed enduring popularity. More than a new opening, the move has proved something of a triumph, as a rightly proud Lapo Ermini, FAP gene-ral manager, tells us: “We came to the US in late 2012, to test the water with themanufacturers, beginning with a series of experiments. We made our first foray inNovember 2013, starting by supplying caravan locks. I anticipate that, by the end of2014, in just one year on the American market, we shall have achieved greater volu-mes than we do in Europe. It is a more than flattering result, one that has exceeded allour expectations.” This achievement now makes FAP the world’s no. 1 manufacturer oflocks for recreational vehicles. But what made FAP locks go down so well? Lapo Erminicontinues, “It was a real revolution. Before, the American manufacturers only used

metal; but the plastic-material technology that we exported provides technically more modern locks.”

FAP has been producing plastic com-ponents for nearly half a century.

The founder began looking to the cam-ping sector in 1968, prompted by twoleading entrepreneurs who helped toshape the Italian caravan sector –Luano Niccolai of Rimor andGiovanbattista Moscardini from Laika. In 1982, the company branched outinto the rail industry, which it still sup-plies with furnishing components forcarriages. The headquarters, includingthe technical department, productionline and warehouse, is in Florence, spanning a covered area of 4000 m2.FAP is a long-time leader in Europe forits camper and caravan locks, with80% market share and partnershipsboth with vehicle manufacturers andwith the most successful door makers. In 2011, it launched the Ghost lock, thetop of its range and a real beacon ofexcellence in the sector, with a mecha-nism offering two locking points.

in the FAP range. “The new ONTOPsystem,” says Lapo Ermini, “has the samemechanism as Ghost, but it is all compac-ted into the internal part of the lock. Youcould say that ONTOP is a more economi-cal version of Ghost.” The new lock canbe installed flush, independently of thedoor design with its thermoformed cover. This new solution offers a high-class loc-king mechanism even on entry-level cam-pers. And the sound is important here, too, for the lock plates are covered in pla-stic, making the lock quieter to close, which is a step forward for a basic, eco-nomical model.

Though a very young company bymany standards, drawing advanta-ge from the nearness of all Italian

businesses in the RV sector Komplast hasbeen able to make inroads into some espe-cially promising areas, where there hasbeen and will partly continue to be a chan-ge in how recreational vehicles are concei-ved. Bearing witness to this are the newproducts launched at the Caravan Salon inDüsseldorf, which provide an overview ofKomplast’s core field of expertise, as wellas of its versatility and capacity to spanfrom building materials to semi-finishedproducts designed for camper interiors.Komplast specializes in plastics, whichcomprise a whole universe of materialsand production processes, including bothextrusion techniques and injection moul-ding.“ Luca and I were sales managers for com-panies specializing in the processing ofplastics and supplying parts for the furnitu-re and furnishing industry,” explainsFrancesco Lucaroni, co owner of Komplasttogether with Luca Rossi. “ It was our workin this sector that led us to start out on ourown in 2008. But immediately after, weexpanded our business to the segment ofrecreational vehicles, which at that timewas experiencing a solid growth phase.”Komplast was capable of transferring tocampers a locking and concealmentsystem already in use in home furnishings– namely sliding shutters – making it ahighly distinctive element of the passengercompartment on modern recreationalvehicles. Today, we can see sliding shutterseverywhere in campers and caravans:smaller shutters are used to close cabinets(a typical example is a TV cabinet door),whereas longer shutters are employed todivide the living area from the sleepingarea, or to conceal and provide access tothe washroom, as well as to separate theshower compartment when it is used.

Komplast’s goal is to manufacture shutterswith an excellent aesthetic impact, andtheir new product leans in this directionindeed. In fact, its shutters are perfectlyfinished on both sides – and it’s no surpri-se the model was baptized “Giano”, justlike the Roman god Janus depicted withtwo opposite faces. The property of havingan equivalent look on both sides is a featu-re that is increasingly appreciated by desi-gners, both for the traditional washroomarea and in the ever more popular solutionof a passing bath acting as a partition bet-ween the living area and sleeping area. However, merely varnishing the outer andinner sides is not enough. The newKomplast shutters can satisfy even themost demanding tastes: the plastic slatsare perfectly joined together, virtuallywithout visible slits. This was made possi-ble by changing the geometry of the slatsand exploiting an innovative design for thesliding runners.

As Francesco Lucaroni explains, “Our slatsare not centered with traditional externalelements, such as screws or plastic buttons, which are systems that are not always plea-sing to the eye, and are laborious in termsof assembly. We’ve designed an assemblysystem that starts with a punching imme-diately after the extrusion, and consists of arunner with six elements joined by smallhinges, which allow the slats to flex in cur-ved areas. I think the aesthetic result isexcellent, and there’s even a band thatcovers the fittings, so that nothing is visi-ble.” Indeed, over the years Komplast hascontinued to refine its shutter systems, enhancing both its expertise and produc-tion flexibility. Ad hoc profiles for the slide-ways can be created to meet the custo-mers’ needs for both the upper guide andthe lower section, with many design solu-tions for the cover with flexible slats.Komplast’s other area of expertise lies instructural elements for camper bodies.

PVC foam as structural elementKomplast’s production covers two fronts: on the one hand, PVC foam structural elements for sandwichpanels which are revolutionizing the way campers are built, and on the other more complex systems such asshutters and functional dividers for various parts of vehicle habitats

Komplast is an Italian company located in Lucignano, in theprovince of Arezzo. In 2008, Francesco Lucaroni and Luca

Rossi partnered to start their business in the wake of their pre-vious experience in the plastics processing sector. Komplast’smost popular product is a sliding shutter with plastic slats, used in the living spaces of recreational vehicles as a closingelement for cabinets, or as a divider for baths and showers, inaddition to being employed as a separator between the livingarea and sleeping area. The company product catalogue alsofeatures other finished products, both in plastic (such as cutle-ry drawers, finishing profiles for wall cabinets and kitchens, screwcover external profiles), and made of fabrics (such as tra-ditional pleated curtains for separating compartments). Thecompany also supplies semi-finished products for the RV sec-tor, manufacturing PVC foam profiles used in place of internalwooden frames in sandwich panels.

Komplastlent its sup-

port to thedesign concepts of various manufacturers,

increasingly intent on replacing the old wooden frames with longlasting elements that are unaffected by water. As we all know, thetraditional building system makes use of a lattice wooden fir stripsset both peripherally and inside the sandwich panel, in turn builtup of polystyrene or Styrofoam and fiberglass panels. However,it’s also evident that a possible, and not all too rare, infiltration ofwater in the sandwich panel can in the long run cause the woodto rot, leading to a loss of resistance for the entire structure, notto mention smelly and unhealthy mould and mildew. Replacingthe wooden strips with plastic slats seems an excellent solutionfor some camper builders: the PVC foam profiles weigh only sli-ghtly more than wooden slats (400-520 Kg/sq m, versus about450 Kg/sq m for wood), but have the advantage of ageing veryslowly – providing hassle-free operation in terms of thermal insu-lation – and above all do not deteriorate when they come intocontact with water. “After being successfully used in wall ele-ments,” says Francesco Lucaroni, “PVC profiles have now evolvedalso to be a part of the sandwich constituting the camper’s floor, once again as a replacement of wood paneling. The most usedones are 50x50 mm full square sectioned profiles.” For the walls, instead, variable sectioned profiles are employed, rectangular or

square, for instance measuring 60x30 mm.Customers can freely choose among manyoptions: the manufacturer can customize boththe length and the section of the profiles;and even heat-moulded curved slats can beproduced. Generally smooth, profiles arebrushed on one or more sides, to enhancetheir adhesive properties. For the fastening offurnishings, such as wall cabinets, two solu-tions are possible. To fasten cabinets onto arather long linear section, a PVC foam is inserted

in the sandwich panel, such as those used for the structure. Forjoining pieces of furniture that are not too long, or to provide apoint of reinforcement, a reinforced nylon fiber plate can be usedinstead, embedded in the insulating material. Of course, boringprocess cannot be the same used for wood: holes can’t be boredtoo quickly, since the PVC would melt, causing the hole to widenmore than required and compromising its sealant properties, which is otherwise much sturdier than wood.

Phantom FixKomplast’s excellence in the furnishings sector for recreatio-

nal vehicles also includes exquisitely technical elements, such as the all-new Phantom Fix, a concealed furniture

fastening system. The small cylinder in which the screw is insertedis embedded in the wood, and then covered by a small smoothlyfitting cover, or just slightly protruding, and can even be hidden byan adhesive element of the same shading as the furniture.

before it is perfectly open. A sturdier mechanical design was provi-ded, both while moving and static. In additioible detail is that thenew step is 30% lighter compared to its predecessor. The new 10750 steps will make their world premiere showing at theDüsseldorf 2014 Caravan Salon, and are already ready to hit the mar-ket. In fact, they’ve successfully passed the structural strict stresstests. Specifically, the definitive version of the 10750 has been sub-jected to 85,000 opening and closing cycles –a test that was rendered even more wearingby the short rest time provided for the

components bet-w e e n

one cycleand thenext –as well

as a dynamo-meter test during which

the step was placed in traction for 40

minutes – compared to the 5 minutes stipulated by regulatory stan-dards – with a force of 250 Kg. In this type of test, problems tend toarise during the first 15 minutes, when materials that are not sturdyenough will enervate, give in, or stretch out. The 10750 remainedperfectly within the acceptable range limits, i.e. a maximum stret-ching of 5 mm once the traction was released. “Our technical department produced some noteworthy results. Weintroduced new materials to lighten the system, but we wanted tokeep using steel for parts with greater exposure to loads, especiallythose subject to major stress generated when the foot is placed fir-mly on the step,” continues Nardini, “and that was only the begin-ning. We’ve already engineered the new 10856 step, and it is expec-ted to become a major player for our future production. Our outlo-ok tends toward a long term vision, with additional investments indevelopment and manufacturing processes. In fact, our newest pro-ducts have been designed to be built with a high degree of automa-tion, using constant manufacturing standards, reduced assemblytimes and consequently cost savings.”

Project 2000 launches a newgeneration of RV steps

Ten years after its invention and market launch, the 10750 RV step is being retired to allow fora second generation of products with some important improvements, thanks to the use of newmaterials and modern building technologies

For Project 2000, launching a new range of RV steps to replacethe 10750 line, which has provided so many rewards forDavide Nardini and his family’s business venture, turned out to

be a real revolution. The 10750 RV step has been assembled ontocampers around the world for over ten years. A system based on amechanism that allows for the step’s transfer and electrical closingunder the body of the camper. Over the years, technical evolutionshave resulted in the introduction of anodized aluminium non-slipmats, a cold galvanizing and paint process, providing a high degreeof resistance even to salt spray, with a coefficient equal to that ofhot-dip galvanizing. Today, this step is being sold to RV manufactu-rers in Europe, the U.S., Australia, Canada, China, Thailand andSaudi Arabia. However, the original project no longer allows for

improvements.“We had nowhere to go with the 10750 step, in terms of developingimprovements, without essentially having to intervene on the entiredesign,” states Project 2000 founder Davide Nardini, “and so wedecided to create a new generation of steps, trusting in our cumula-tive experience on the current series spanning over fifteen years. Ourmission was to improve quality, drastically reduce the weight andcontain costs, yet maintain unaltered the excellence that typicallycharacterizes our products.” Compared to the first generation, which ranked very high from aqualitative standpoint, additional safety features were introduced, redesigning the gear mechanism in order to absorb shocks and thusavoid damage, in the event that the user steps onto the platform

The all-new 10856 will also bemaking its world premiereappearance at the Düsseldorf

Caravan Salon, a horizontal slidingelectric retractable step. A totally newdesign that makes use of a variety ofmaterials: the required task. The10856 is a complex RV step that featu-res a casing into which the wholesystem is enclosed, and a footrest thatmoves in and out of the casing by sli-ding on two lateral runners. The newstep design had to take into accountproblem issues with dirt accumulatingin the casing – albeit already reducedto a minimum with the old generationof steps. In addition, the primary goalwas to lighten the system. “The current 10856 is a perfectly desi-

gned product, which has never createdany problems,” continues DavideNardini. “For the second generation,we worked on lightening the designand reducing costs, introducing nume-rous plastic parts. Plastic is a robust, lightweight material, and even thoughinitial investments can be substantialbecause moulds have to be created, itultimately allows for contained costsand the adoption of solutions thatresult in quicker assembly times, rightfrom the moulding phase.”Tests were conducted with consultingprovided by a qualified engineeringfirm, which created a series of tests onmaterials relative to temperature andmechanical resistance factors. ANSYSwas used as a software application to

provide simulations for a wide rangeof different physical scenarios relatingto structural and thermal behaviour:specifically, steady-state and transientthermal analyses; static structural ana-lyses, both linear and non-linear; amodal analysis to calculate the naturalfrequencies and of structural vibrationmodes; and transient tests assessingthe dynamic effects associated withtime-varying loads. One of the para-meters set stipulated that when openthe step had to resist to a front-endforce of 80 Kg without sustaining anydamage, and that each of the twoplatform support arms resist up to aweight of 250 Kg, with a safety ratioof 1:3; i.e. supporting a weight of upto 750 Kg.

The design for the 12673 retractable bed was born with the layouts of a rear queen bed, andindependent toilet and shower areas. To allow the crew members to move about with easein the rear area, lengthy vehicles had to be built. With the 12658 bed, Project 2000 introdu-

ced a retractable system that allowed for a shortened rear wall design, by up to 220 mm.When the bed frame moves back, the back tilts to a maximum angle of

114°. In 2014, this mechanism was further improved with the deve-lopment of the Easy Lift Project, a system that facilitates thepushing of the retractable frame and requires only minimumeffort by the user. The innovation presented at the DüsseldorfCaravan Salon is the electrical version of the 12673, with themotor and components perfectly integrated in the frame. The

electrically powered handling system also features a lightweightdesign. The frame has a collapsible front opening movement and

can remain open even during the retraction process.

The model 12673 in an automatic version too

Yet another technical innovation is the low lying bed slatdesign, which was born out of the need to have the bed riseas high as possible, especially where limitations exist in rela-

tion to internal height. The race to contain the external height ofmany vehicles has created problems in the positioning of the varia-ble height front bed. In order to not have to reduce the thickness ofthe mattresses to a minimum, thereby affecting the comfort ofusers, Project 2000 presents a solution that allows for an extra 40mm in height, and up to 60 mm more using flat slats instead of cur-ved slats. The mattress takes up 6 cm in the 9.8 cm profile, leavingonly 4 cm uncovered. Normally, the profile’s outside thickness is 8cm. The mechanical components can be installed in the retractableroof, just like the standard version.

Renewal in the name of tradition

With a new production siteand a new staff, Tecnoled willbe presenting its innovativeproduct lines at the DüsseldorfCaravan Salon, featuringMade in Italy design andadvanced technology

Tecnoled, a company that has alwaysbeen at the forefront of LED lightingtechnology, proposes a range of

products specifically dedicated to recreatio-nal vehicles, with some major technical anddesign evolutions. Since January, Tecnoledhas also moved its production facilities to anew location, still in the province ofFlorence and conveniently situated just ashort distance from the motorway exit, in alarge warehouse that is organized accor-

ding to a flexibleoperating logicthat will allow thecompany torespond quickly tomarket demands.

Tecnoled’s manage-ment is headed byMatteo Saini, assisted byhis father Alberto. «We’ve equipped the new

warehouse facility withmonitoring work stations that

are connected to the central com-puter system, allowing operators to workon different product lines more efficientlyand with a reduced margin of error»explains Matteo Saini. «Our equipment andtooling allows us to create custom pro-ducts and projects, as we’ve always done.Although our field of action also extends tothe professional and domestic sectors, ourbrand has a long tradition in the recreatio-nal vehicles market, and that’s exactlywhere we’re currently focusing our creati-ve efforts.»For the upcoming season, Tecnoled isrelying on Samsung SMD 5630 LEDtechnology, which has proven itself evenmore performing in terms of efficiency andlight output, together with thesecond generation ofJapanese MicropowerLEDs. The latterhave been furtherminiaturized, tothe point of occu-pying the samesurface area as firstgeneration Micropower

units, but passing from six to nine LEDs. Inaddition to providing powerful and uni-form emissions, Micropower LEDs are invi-sible when the lights are switched off.«Many designers appreciate this option, while others opt for SMD LEDs and believethat seeing a transparent yellow LED whenthe lights are switched off is stylisticallypleasant,- continues Saini - It’s a subjectivechoice, and we’re in a position to meetboth needs. At a qualitative level, the twotechnologies are equivalent, since there isnow an ample range in both types of LEDs,in terms of color temperature, performan-ce and availability over time. Our productlines include both technologies, becauseit’s essential that a lighting system inside arecreational vehicle must be uniform.»Tecnoled has flanked its lineof Plexy ceilingl i g h t i n gsolutions- one ofits mostp o p u l a rp r o d u c tlines, manufac-tured in any shape and size and with a very

level of customization – with anew range of downlightsand arm supported spo-tlights. The new dow-nlights were designedto respond to minimumclearance requirements,

both in terms of theirs reces-sed body and outer frame. That

consist of four modular interchangeable

components (body,LED module,screen ande x t e r n a lframe) tos a t i s f ya n ytechnical,a e s t h e t i cor functionalneeds proposedby customers. Themain body is made of a light colored pla-stic, contributing to amplifying the lightemitted by the modules. With a thicknessof just 11 millimeters, the body is encased

screws, integrated springs in thecasing, wire springs or tape springs.Spotlights can be supplied with wiring tobe connected to the installation, or with anintegrated connector in the casing. Theexternal frame is just 4 mm thick, and isavailable in standard polished chrome aswell as a wide variety of colors on demand.A transparent casing has also been desi-gned, which together with a frame equip-ped with a transparent ring creates asecondary lighting around the frame, a fea-ture that is very much appreciated on Plexy

ceiling fixtures, and now also available on downlights. Innovations also abound for the line of arm supported spo-tlights, which feature elegant styling and a unique spotlightdesign, especially for the positioning of the flexible arm, whichnow protrudes laterally from the support. With this solution, forinstance, spotlights can be mounted near beds with a latchmechanism, since the support arm and spotlight can lie even withthe wall surface and no longer constitute an obstacle. Built insteel and aluminium, these lighting systems integrate a currentregulator that maintains a constant brightness for the light beam, even when the power intensity varies. The support can be positio-ned either vertically or horizontally, as required. Tecnoled has alsodeveloped a lighting product line with LED bars, built in alumi-nium with an opaque Plexiglas screen that can be customized invarious sizes up to three meters in length. Tecnoled lighting

systems can be fittedwith a touch dimmerswitch that alsoregulates lightingintensity. Specifically, the circuit managesthe primary illumina-tion with a Soft Startgradual light mode, providing a gradual transition from the off to the on state, and agradual Soft End switching off function, i.e. a gradual transitionfrom the on to the off state. Pressing and holding the button pro-vides a dimmer function, regulating the lighting intensity. Whenswitched on again, the system resets itself to the intensity lastselected.

Tecnoled was the first manufacturer to inventReplace, specifically for halogen spotlights. Now,nine years later, Tecnoled once again proposes anindustry first with an important innovation onhalogen spotlight replacement modules.Traditional G4 modules render the mirror dish onhalogen spotlights unnecessary, because the LED’semission is only face-on and, in any case, the sup-port covers the underlying dish. The new techno-logy proposed by Tecnoled makes use of double-face suspended LEDs that produce a much moreuniform light beam. When lit, these LEds are nolonger perceived as distinct elements, but rather asa single light source. Even for the G4 line, where itappeared there was nothing more to say, Tecnoledhas managed to innovate once again.
