1. Provide specific reasons for the proposal of this course and explain how the changes enhance

the curriculum.

FIN 420-520 will provides students hands-on experiential learning of real money management

using funds endowed by private donors. The course has been offered for three semesters as a

special topics course, and is schedule to be taught a fourth time during the spring 2019

semester (see enrollment numbers in the table below). The courses started with a $50,000

endowment in 2016, which has attracted additional donor funds of $181,081 and has had an

ROI of 10.4% since inception. Students actively participate in all aspects of security analysis

and portfolio management, including understanding investment ethics, generation of trading

ideas, investment analysis, asset valuation and allocation, trading of financial securities, and

performance report. The student managed investment fund class successfully competed in the

2017 Quinnipiac G.A.M.E. VII Forum, taking 1st place – Core Portfolio. The hand-on learning

has been invaluable for graduates who have leveraged the experience into career paths in

GIS data for a specific application. These two courses do not cover the theories and principles

of spatial databases and how to design and implement a spatial database. In the age of big data,

spatial databases will be needed to manage, process, and analyze big geospatial data. This

course aims to introduce the principles of spatial database design and development, which can

help students better manage and analyze big geospatial data and become more competitive on

the job market.

and Recreation Management major and course work, the content of those classes now

focuses more on management and leadership; it no longer meets our standards or elements.

Therefore, the Department of Health and Nutritional Sciences has proposed this class to

enhance the curriculum and meet the standards. The combination of the proposed HLTH

250-250L, PE 352; and PE 483 and PE 484 will replace these credits. In the existing

courses (PE 469-469L, PE 471-471L, PE 473-473L, PE 474-474L, PE 475-475L) students

participate in classroom time on campus limited to 1 – 2 hours weekly with their peers. In

the proposed class, students will gain 40 – 60 field hours in sport specific training with a

certified coach in an approved setting with student athletes. PE 484 is the field experience

and application of the course content that is taught in PE 483. The topic of 483 will be

coaching fundamentals and theories, PE 484 will consist of the student appling that

fundamental and thoeritcal information in a sport specific field placement. This course is

unique because it will allow tradidtional and non-traditional students to access this course

and be prepaired to coach in a variety of settings/sports. It will allow us to pool the

enrollment of 6, traditionally low enrollment classes into one course which should their for

meet the number requirements each semester. It is also unique because they have never

Subject: Re: Common course modifications for Math Pathways

Dan, we informed the curriculum committee about the SDBOR math pathways plan. Since this was

SDBOR approved in May, a USD faculty review and vote at this time is not needed. We will notify the
