Acknowledgements The Department of Academic Computing

gratefully acknowledges the Community College of Philadelphia Foundation for its

support of the Digital Imaging Center. Through a generous grant from the

Foundation the College has purchased two digital scanners: one specifically for 35mm slides and film strips and a flat-bed scanner capable of scanning photographs as well as multi-page text documents. Also, a suite of

Adobe® software products including PhotoShop®, Illustrator®, Premiere®, and Go-Live® has been purchased and installed for faculty use. These products have a two-

year automatic upgrade maintenance contract to ensure the latest version will be

available for the future.

Handling film Film and film holder should be free

from dust and dirt Always work with processed film in

a clean, dust free environment Handle film by the edges or mount

to prevent fingerprints and dirt marring the image area

Page 12: Academic Computing Department

Where is the emulsion? When film is scanned, the emulsion

side of the film should be down If the image is orientated correctly

when viewing the image, rather than a mirror image, the emulsion side is facing down

The emulsion is on the same side of the mount as the film manufacturers or processor’s name is printed

Loading mounted slides

Up to four mounted 35mm slides can be inserted into the slide mount holder

The slide mounts must be between 1 mm and 2 mm thick to fit the holder

Glass mounts cannot be used; the glass refracts the light resulting in distorted and unevenly illuminated scans

Page 14: Academic Computing Department

Loading 35mm film strips

Film strips of up to six frames can be loaded into the film holder

File Types BMP: the bitmap image file type is used in Windows.

This file type can be opened in the paint software installed in the Windows operating system. The file size is fixed allowing the retention of the original image quality.

JPEG: the image file can be compressed to reduce the file size. The compression ratio can be selected when saving. The higher the compression ratio, the smaller the file size, and the more deterioration to the image quality.

TIFF: this high-resolution bitmap can be opened on any computer platform. The color depth of this format can be selected in the preference dialog box.

PICT: this image file type is used in Macintosh. This file can be opened in the Simple Text application installed with the Macintosh operating system.
