Agni college of Technology has taken a novel initiative of introducing Kalam

Center for Innovation to accelerate the research oriented spirit among students.

The main objective of the center is to give hands on experience to the students to

undertake projects for the benefit of the society. Five clubs namely manufacturing

club, Thomson club, Energy club, Techie club and Kitty Hawk club was formed

under this center.

Inaugural Function

The inauguration of “Kalam Center for Innovation” was held at BRP on

02.02.2016. The function started with invocation. The coordinator of the club,

Ms. Siva Sankari R., delivered the welcome address. Dr. S. R. R. Senthilkumar,

Principal, Agni College of Technology preside over the function and the speaker

emphasized on importance of research and projects in the field of engineering

studies. He also encouraged the students to participate in club activities with

enthusiasm.

Energy Club

The first session of Energy Club was inaugurated by Ms. Sivasankari, Head,

Department of Physics. The mission of the Energy Club was briefed to the

students by Ms. Mahalakshmi, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and

Electronics Engineering. A crystal clear explanation on renewable and

nonrenewable sources was demonstrated and question and answer sessions were

initiated.

The club introduced solar cells to the students and practical classes of

soldering was given. Students were taken to the solar panels installed on the roof

of the college. Technical terms such as; blocking diode, bypass diode, on grid and

off grid were explained to the students.

Video lectures on solar and renewable sources were projected to the

students as a result of it students actively participated in the seminars and

lectures. The functions of solar reserve power were explained to the students.

The trainers’ revealed the frequently asked questions among the students.

Students were divided into teams and discussed about their mini projects.

A list of projects was given to select as their project. Students were also

introduced to technical presentation and project viva. Styles and strategies of

presentation were given to the students to develop their presentation skills.

Thomson Club

The first session of “Thomson” Club was inaugurated by Dr. Srinivasan

Alavandar, Head, Department of Electrical and Electronics explained the mission

of Thomson Club to the students. He encouraged the students and conducted

activities to identify the hidden talent among the students.

A task on project presentation was performed by the students and the

trainers evaluated with well-established rubrics. Students were split into teams.

Each team came out with a presentation of their projects. Students explained the

form and function of their projects. Their presentation was graded by trainers.

Suggestions and improvements were given to the students by Dr. Srinivasan

Alavandhar.

Students were introduced to a virtual circuit drawing software called

“Eagle”. The software enables the students to draw circuits using a PC. This

software helps the students in completing a successful circuit and they can also

check their desired output if input made perfectly.

Sessions related to paper presentation and project discussion were

organized. Students were taken to the Circuit Laboratory to gain practical

experience.

Manufacturing Club

The first session on the manufacturing club was inaugurated by Dr. Karthikeyan,

Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Karthikeyan explained the working principle Electric Train. He also

introduced student to the concept of Hovercraft and Go-Kart. He encouraged the

more girl students to register in Manufacturing Club. Students were exposed to

the blueprint of the body structure of the Go-Kart.

Students were taken to Manufacturing Technology Lab to gain practical

experience. The trainers taught the students about the working of father of all

machine (i.e. Lathe Machines). Students were given hands on experience over the

various processes in cutting, welding, arc welding, grinding, punching, drilling etc.

The dynamics of the braking system, chain sprocket, suspension, tires of

the Go-Kart was explained practically. The Go-Kart engine was brought and

showed to the students. The attaching process was shown to the students.

The vehicle was completed with greater accuracy and precision by the

students within a short period of time. The video of our students driving Go-Kart

is uploaded in YouTube and can be viewed from the following links:

teams and a project list was presented to them Students selected their projects

after discussing within their team. Trainers explained the concept and aided the

students to make the students feel comfortable in handling their new task. The

main objective of exploring the internal parts of the computer and mobile

operating system was explained to the club members. The entire club was split

into teams with a maximum of four and projects were given to them. Students

selected their projects based on their interest and area of expertise. Students

were assisted by the trainers to complete their projects. Students successfully

completed their projects in the end. The list of projects undertaken under this
