Diff erent starting points, diff erent challenges and priorities

Where are you on your asset management journey? Are you

still working in departmental silos with competing priorities,

patchy knowledge of the assets, facing unknown risks and

using inconsistent criteria for prioritsation and decision

making? Or are you already on the journey to establishing

a joined-up, systematic and integrated approach to asset

life cycle management? Or perhaps you already have an

established and stable governance system for strategic

planning etc, and are seeking where next to focus?

To support the wider asset management journey, TWPL

Asset Management Academy has pre-grouped the most

valuable combination of learning and practical tools that are

typically needed at diff erent stages of the journey, whether

you are an individual or an organisation.

Integrating and Embedding assistance is available for

individuals and organisations who want a joined-up

approach to asset management where greater insight and

understanding is needed. Education and training is

available for individuals who have the responsibility for

developing strategies and plans, or are leading and

facilitating improvement programmes to support the

establishment of a joined-up and eff ective ‘management

system for asset management’. As well as providing

professional training to gain asset management

qualifi cations, TWPL Asset Management Academy has

Identifying and prioritising the needs

Benefi ting from over 20 years of

experience in multiple industries,

cultures and environments, TWPL's

Asset Management Academy has

developed some very pragmatic

methods for identifying existing

competency strengths and areas of

potential improvement. We have a

structured approach that integrates the

best aspects of the IAM Competences

Framework with a context-sensitive

appreciation of organisational

priorities, functional roles, competency

requirements and their criticalities. And,

like all TWPL services, our model and

elements are extremely fl exible so they

can be integrated with existing human

resource systems and competency

frameworks e.g. technical skills or

managerial/leadership frameworks.

Example process for identifying and prioritising requirementsWe can help you to sort out the

priorities and scale of needs, using

robust and transparent methods for

identifying the gaps, and determining

their criticality. This provides a solid

platform for planning the professional

development programmes, measuring

their eff ectiveness and, using the TWPL

‘learning while doing’ methods, even

making the programme ‘self-funding’

(through the business benefi ts obtained

during the learning).

Typically, such a systematic engagement will include:

1. Defi ne the learning and development target groups (roles x subjects).

2. Choose a ‘pathfi nder’ group of key roles and personnel (to calibrate the process & train internal HR assessors).

a. Defi ne the roles, required competences (skills and knowledge) and their criticalities.

b. Assess current individual competency profi les (structured interview methods).

c. Aggregate the gaps and criticalities of gaps to prioritise personal training plans.

d. Refi ne and ‘template’ process for volume usage (by role type and responsibility level).

e. Perform initial training to address priority gaps for this ‘pathfi nder’ group.

3. a. Repeat analysis stages in prioritised programme.

b. Plan consolidated training programme for subjects, gap criticalities, volumes and methods (blended learning mix).

c. Aggregate the gaps and criticalities of gaps to prioritise personal training plans.

d. Deliver training, workplace coaching, qualifi cations testing etc. Including ‘train the trainer’ programmes to support volume and sustainability.

e. Track overall progress and eff ectiveness key performance indicators (KPIs).

Gaps between current capability and requirments for role(s)

The most important stage is the development and delivery of the learning to close the most business-critical competency gaps. The prioritisation ensures that investment in training yields the best return, and also provides

the individual learner with the most useful new skills as quickly as possible. However we must also consider the

best methods for the required learning. TWPL is uniquely experienced in design, development, customisation and

delivery of ‘blended learning’ programmes for Asset Management, including the vital culture change dimensions.

open/individual participation and inter-

company competitions, this game

must be one of the most educational,

enjoyable and eff ective learning

methods available.

It off ers individuals or teams the chance to test their knowledge and skills against the best.

Teams of 4-5 are provided with pre-

range of real and perceived risks and

opportunities for the asset

management scenario.

Further information is progressively

revealed at stages during the

programme and further data can be

‘purchased’ at the teams’ discretion.

The Asset Management Challenge™

requires the teams to sort out priorities,

develop new strategies and plans, and

construct the business case for the

proposed way forward. As the game

progresses, the decisions you make are

performance and a variety of

stakeholder impacts - you can see

how your decisions add or subtract

from value. Each team is scored on

MSc/PgDip/PgCert in Asset ManagementThe university education programmes, leading to Post-Graduate Certificate,

Diploma or Master Degree qualifications, provide both the in-depth theoretical

knowledge and the practical insights needed in any asset-intensive organisation.

This course is intended for leaders, managers, champions and members of asset

management teams, with responsibility for any physical assets or infrastructure that

are important in the delivery of the organisation’s services. Most attendees will have

between one and five years in their role, and their ambition will be to improve their

influence in their employers’ asset stewardship and value contribution.

Diploma in Asset ManagementThe Institute of Asset ManagementThe IAM Diploma is a more advanced qualification for those wishing to further

their knowledge, understanding and responsibility, as well as apply professional

judgment in practice. It is the highest qualification awarded by the IAM and

is aimed primarily at those with prior knowledge and experience of Asset

Management. Typically, such individuals will be preparing for specialist or

management roles in Asset Management.

Our 6-day course is a fully self-contained preparation for the IAM Diploma

examination, but it is also a great way to extend your knowledge, if you

already hold the IAM Certificate and would now like to prepare for the

Diploma qualification.

Asset Management Qualifications

TWPL has over 20 years experience in formal professional development, from

basic NVQ/HNC up to Master degree-level.

Popular current programmes include:

Certificate in Asset ManagementThe Institute of Asset ManagementThe IAM Certificate is an introductory qualification aimed at demonstrating

an understanding of the teaching the fundamental principles of asset

management. As an IAM endorsed trainer, TWPL’s Asset Management

Academy offers preparation and training for the IAM Certificate through a

5-day or 3-day classroom-based course, both preparing you to sit the

IAM Certificate examination.

Our 5-day version has been developed for those new to the subject with

little or no experience of Asset Management. This may include some specific

discipline experience, but little knowledge of the wider context, such as business

perspectives, risk management, life cycles, other functional roles, etc.

Our 3-day version is for semi-experienced learners and presumes that most of the

basic concepts are familiar. It is suitable for those with more than 2 years’ practical

experience in an asset-intensive industry with knowledge of business context,

asset characteristics, risks, work planning, etc.

Online options are also available and detailed in the Online Learning section of

the prospectus.

In pursuit of Asset Management Excellence, and in support of our Asset Management Improvement Programme, TWPL are our preferred partner in creation and delivery of training material covering 'Introduction to Asset Management Systems, and preparation for the IAM Certificate in Asset Management.
