Due to the quality of their training

and good connections to partner

companies LDT Nagold enjoys a high

reputation in the field of fashion busi-

ness.

Established in 1949 as a private insti-

tution, LDT Nagold raises their own

budget and thus guarantees a certain

amount of independence from teach-

ing and research.

The main evidence of the high quality

of their training is that the degree

holders of LDT Nagold are able to find

challenging jobs very quickly thanks

to their practical-oriented studies. The

degree holders of LDT Nagold have

profound knowledge of goods and

business administration at their dis-

posal.

Technical skills are the first priority be-

side the development of personality.

Nagold has established a close net-

work with universities and fashion

academies in USA, India, England, the

Netherlands and other important na-

tions in the last years.

Thanks to this efficient network stu-

dents are well supported while look-

ing for challenging professional op-

portunities abroad. Furthermore, this

fact makes it very clear that the trade

of fashionable goods takes place in an

international environment.

As the president of the Federal Ger-

man Association of Textile Retail

Trade (BTE) and chairman of the

board of directors of LDT Nagold Pvt.

Ltd., I wish our Academy of Textile

and Shoe Business all the best for the

future and our students good success

in their professional careers.

Message of Greetings from the Chairperson of the Federal GermanAssociation of Shoe Retail Trade(BDSE)

Brigitte WischnewskiChairperson of the Federal German

Association of Shoe Retail Trade

(BDSE)

Owing to the long-standing reputa-

tion of LDT Nagold, the European Ed-

ucational Forum of Shoe Retail Trade

(EBS) has been relocated to Nagold.

Now, after five years of solid collabo-

ration, it has become evident, how

successful the work of LTD Nagold is

for the whole outfit branch of trade.

In various courses of study young peo-

ple are well groomed to become an

executive in shoe retail trade, for oth-

ers it is an excellent training in order

to become self-employed in this field

in future.

Consequently, the incumbent presi-

dent of the Federal Association does

not only work as a member of the

board of directors but also brings him-

self in as a lecturer in the course of

study. The practical orientation has al-

ways been the main plus point of the

studies at Nagold.

As stated by the president of the Fed-

eral German Association of Shoe Re-

tail Trade, the fact that EBS is located

at LDT makes Nagold the first address

for all those who aspire to hold lead-

ing positions in their professional ca-

reers or wanting to start their own

business in the shoe retail trade.

Page 6: Academy of Fashion Business, Management & Marketing

I would like to give you a warm wel-

come here at LDT on behalf of the city

of Nagold. The city is proud to have

this academy, which is unique in Ger-

many and feels pleased to be your

host during your studies. The “Texer”

as they are called in colloquial lan-

guage, make our city livelier and are

most welcome here. Some of the

alumni even stayed in Nagold and

likewise there are people from

Nagold who have affiliated them-

selves to these “Texers” and live today

all over the world.

Since more than five decades a large

number of young professionals of

leading German and European textile

companies are trained and groomed

for leading positions here in Nagold.

Changing the name from Specialized

School to Specialized Academy

demonstrates the self-image of LDT:

to be a modern market oriented edu-

cational institute which trains the stu-

dents with widely needed qualifica-

tions in a demand- and target-oriented

way.

The LTD accordingly conforms to the

globalizing markets and equips the

future managers of the fashion busi-

ness with necessary knowledge. The

professional qualifications, which they

acquire in Nagold, is only one part,

the other part is the life in Nagold it-

self. Nagold welcomes all students

with comfortable lodging facilities,

inviting gastronomy, a lively city cen-

ter and excellent infrastructure. In or-

der to remain competitive, the city

prepares itself for the future by con-

structing a large number of new

buildings in the city center. This en-

hancement of attractiveness is neces-

sary for securing the retail trade in

the city center in the long run as well

as to strengthen the position of the

city itself. I am sure you will have

pleasant memories of Nagold and will

enjoyably recall the times spent in our

city.

I wish you all the best for your studies

and a successful completion of your

studies.

FOREWORD OF THE MANAGEMENT BOARD

Hardly any area of the economy is as

diverse and global as the filed of fash-

ion business.

The segments procurement, product

management and sale offer various

stimulating and attractive opportuni-

ties for career advancement. Design,

procurement, production and trade

take place in an international envi-

ronment. The last existing trade barri-

ers have been abolished by the latest

decisions of international organiza-

tions such as WTO. The dynamics ac-

companying these processes keeps on

changing the challenges, which this

branch has to cope with. Because the

credo is: “The winner is the cus-

tomer”.

Who is talented and efficient has the

opportunity to move forward very

quickly in the field of fashion business

since there are not many hierarchies.

Thus, more than ever the further and

advanced training of each individual

is the most important factor to join a

company and get ahead. At the core

of education of LDT are apart from

imparting technical skills the willing-

ness for life-long learning as well as

self-dependant and team-oriented

learning. The state-of-the-art struc-

ture of the courses of study of the

Specialized Academy such as the

short-time studies and seminars guar-

antee the exceptional qualification of

young people and senior managers.

Our Specialized Academy is a cus-

tomer-oriented service enterprise for

the entire field of fashion business.

Consultation and support service for

the students and participants of the

seminars through lecturers and tutors

as well as through the management

board are at the center of our educa-

tional services. Our overall concept to

be a consulting academy distinguishes

us from other institutions, which are

run more conventionally. Instead of

imparting ready-made knowledge,

the LDT Nagold focuses more on

training of skills and know-how,

which qualify the students for key po-

sitions in the field of fashion business.

The further and advanced education

at LDT Nagold, which is combing with

practical training, enjoys an excellent

reputation in the field of fashion busi-

ness. There are various reasons for

this good reputation. The most impor-

tant reasons are: - an excellent base

through the unique combination of

knowledge of goods with skills in

business administration – an advan-

tage in times of lean management

and cost cutting – an extensive and

profound knowledge as well as rele-

vant soft skills. The degree-holders

from Nagold generally manage new

tasks very quickly and do not need

long periods of adjustment to their

new jobs. Distinguished degree-hold-

ers of our Specialized Academy work-

ing in the field of commerce, manu-

facturing and management

consultancy compliment the LDT

Nagold on the practical orientation of

their educational services.

Educational services of the LDT Nagold

Progression of thecourses of study

The beginning of the courses for stu-

dents with the goal to hold an Man-

ager Textile BTE is in the middle of

March (summer term) and in the mid-

dle of September (winter term). Stu-

dents with the goal to hold a Manag-

er Textile BTE Specialization Shoe

start their courses usually in the mid-

dle of March (summer term).

Classes

One semester in each case comprises

of 14 weeks of classes

Semester Holidays

There are no classes from the end of

January to the middle of March (be-

ginning of the summer term) as well

as from the end of July to the middle

of September (beginning of the win-

ter term). These periods of time are

meant for practical training and for

writing the term papers.

Modular structure of the courses of

study

The structure of the courses of study

of LDT Nagold focuses on both devel-

oping professional competence and

appropriate social skills. The structure

of the courses of study decisively con-

tributes to the development of vigor-

ous teaching and learning skills

amongst the students.

Teaching Units

The teaching units are organized in

block classes to enhance the efficiency

of the training courses. Respective

sections of practical lessons and exer-

cises are integrated into the teaching

units. One day of study at a time en-

compasses two half days of 3 x 75

minutes classes. There are breaks

arranged between the various block

classes, which can be used flexibly to

suit the interests of the students and

lecturers.

Training Units

In each half-day teaching unit an ad-

ditional training unit of 45 minutes is

included. In these training units un-

settled questions are answered and

further exercises and case studies are

worked on and discussed with the lec-

turers.

Subject Groups

The classes are combined into four

subject groups

Administration and Organisation

Sale and Procurement

Human Resource Management

Goods: Textile and Shoes

The subject groups 1 – 3 deal with

themes of business administration,

the forth subject group deals with

goods knowledge. Business adminis-

tration and goods knowledge are

combined to guarantee professional-

ism in the future everyday working

life. Consequently, it is possible to ad-

equately teach the connections be-

tween commercial and product-relat-

ed tasks.

Subject groups (see graphs pages 22

and 23

Curriculum

Structure of the Courses of Study

The Structure of theCourses of Study

The structure of the courses of study

allows choices for various subjects of

goods knowledge and business ad-

ministration (see graph page 20).

• At the Beginning of the Study

Decision either for the field of

goods knowledge in textile or for

goods knowledge in shoes is to be

taken. Respectively the degree will

be delivered as Manager Textile BTE

or Manager Textile BTE Specializa-

tion Shoe.

• At the Beginning of the

Specialization

At the third semester, students have

to choose between business admin-

istration in the fields of Retail or

Wholesale. The specialization is not-

ed in the leaving certificate (e.g.

Manager Textile BTE with specializa-

tion in retail).

• Examination Procedures

• The study and examination regula-

tions of LDT Nagold that are valid at

the time of examination are manda-

tory in the carrying out of the re-

spective parts of the exams.

Basic Level• First and Second Semester

Lessons in basic subjects of the four

subject groups (core lessons). The

emphasis is on the imparting of ba-

sic knowledge.

• Presentations of Companies

Renowned partner companies of

LDT Nagold in the field of com-

merce and industry introduce the

theme of business philosophy. Con-

cerns of human resource manage-

ment and professional opportuni-

ties are dealt with and frank discus-

sions conducted.

• Advancement to Third Semester

For moving to the specialization

grade it is required to pass certain

exams (according to the examina-

tion regulations)

Specialization Grade• Third and Fourth semester

Lessons in the major subjects of the

four subject groups

• Major Subjects

There are about 70 major subjects

the students can choose from. These

are selected in accordance with the

professional objectives of the stu-

dents and are also dependant upon

the individual professional special-

ization. The specialization grade has

a very strong practical-orientation –

instead of delivering lectures case

studies are worked on.

• Special Weeks of Goods Knowledge

These special weeks in the third and

fourth semester focus especially on

goods knowledge. By teaching in

block seminars the optimal combi-

nation of various themes of this

subject group is accomplished. Sin-

gle themes are assessed and ana-

lyzed through different perspectives

– also by conducting workshops.

The results are presented orally or

in written form and subsequently

graded. Renowned experts in the

field conduct these special weeks.

These guest lecturers are from Ger-

many as well as from neighbouring

countries such as Austria and

Switzerland. .

23

Page 24: Academy of Fashion Business, Management & Marketing

Order Training

Staff members of the production and

sales management of famous manu-

facturers teach in the field of purchas-

ing from the third semester onwards.

After the arrangement of working

groups and the briefing by the lectur-

ers the order and placing of limits are

exercised realistically by taking always

the newest collections. The decisions

of the students are jointly analyzed

and assessed.

Excursions

LDT Nagold offers regular excursions

from the third semester onwards. This

includes also sports excursions and ed-

ucational trips to major shoe manu-

facturers in Italy. Groups of students

visit partner companies and chambers

of commerce dealing with the fashion

business. They learn about specialties

of products and brands and obtain an

insight into the higher echelons of

management of this branch. Often it

happens that even members of the

board of management of these com-

panies are ready to answer the ques-

tions of these student groups of LDT

Nagold. The excursions are reviewed

in reports.

Examinations

Written Tests

After seven weeks of studies there is a

week of written tests, at the end of

the term there are more written tests

in all major subjects.

Term Paper

The term paper – usually written in

the fourth semester- is meant to

prove the professional and method-

ological capabilities. Complex subject

matters have to be analyzed and ap-

propriate solutions have to be pre-

sented. The term paper represents to-

gether with the Large Case Study a

kind of fifth subject group. The marks

Exchange Programme

The LDT Nagold cultivates partner-

ships with various academies at the

international level. (see postgraduate

study course).

During the courses of study for Manag-

er Textile BTE or Manager Textile BTE

Specialization Shoe, it is already possi-

ble to avail a five-week stay at the

Pearl Academy of Fashion in New Delhi

in the semester break. The Pearl Acad-

emy of Fashion is one of the already

four Indian partner academies of LDT

Nagold. Good knowledge in English is

a precondition for students to be able

to follow the classes. Passing the upper

intermediate level language test of

LDT is the minimum requirement.

5 weeks at the Pearl Academy of

Fashion

In emerging India, the Pearl Academy

of Fashion established in 1993 with

more than 600 registered students

takes the first place amongst the fash-

ion academies. Apart from the study

of design the educational services of-

fered encompass a study in fashion

photography as well as various cours-

es in the related fields such as fashion

styling. The partnership with the Pearl

Academy of Fashion was established

in the year 2000 in collaboration with

the German Technical Cooperation

(GTZ), funded by the German Ministry

for Development. In the meantime,

there is a retail management course

on offer in New Delhi, which enjoys

increasing popularity. In the scope

of the five-week stay at the

Pearl Academy of Fashion

(www.pearlacademy.com) students

participate in the classes and visit

manufacturing units as well as pur-

chasing offices. One week can be used

individually in order to get an insight

into the procurement market and to

discover the culture of the country.

The students of the Indian academy

attend the same kind of programme

while staying at LDT Nagold.

more. To be successful one has to be

competent in foreign languages and

needs cross-cultural understanding

and media expertise.

The students qualify themselves for

international demands by completing

the postgraduate study course for two

semesters at LDT Nagold. The course

of study is devided into one semester

at the Pearl Academy of Fashion and

one semester at LDT Nagold. The serv-

cross-culture-training. LDT Nagold

and the Pearl Academy of Fashion

have jointly developed the individual

semester programme. Aside from

technical topics the Indian (business-)

culture is dealt with. The semester

usually goes from February to July. Af-

ter 8 weeks of study at the Pearl

Academy of Fashion the acquired

skills are deepened through doing an

internship at selected companies. Sub-

sequently the students have to design

a project work. At the end of the se-

mester LDT conducts the examina-

tions.

The sixth Semester

In the sixth semester topics such as

personality development, communica-

tion as well as media expertise is dealt

with. Apart from LDT lecturers, ex-

perts from wholesale, retail and con-

sulting companies hold classes in the

scope of the international semester

(usually between September and the

end of January) at the LDT Nagold

with students from partner acade-

mies. The sixth semester is also con-

cluded by examinations taken by LDT.

HUGO BOSS

Textile Business Administration BTE

I recommend LDT Nagold as there is

no comparable educational facility in

Germany, which trains future leaders

for a successful professional entry in

such a practical way.

In Nagold, the necessary knowledge

of goods is meaningfully combined

with business administration and is

taught with the required reference to

the professional work.

Through this, the students acquire a

general understanding of the trade,

which suffices more than what we de-

mand from our prospective employ-

ees. Therefore, we gladly accept grad-

uates of LDT Nagold specialized

academy.

Textile Business Administration BTE

LDT Nagold provides the possibility to

acquire a practical knowledge out of

a rich educational offer. Especially the

combination of business administra-

tion and current knowledge of goods

is a great basis for job entrants. For

me LDT Nagold was the first impor-

tant step in a successful professional

career. I recommend LDT Nagold, be-

cause we, from s.Oliver, offer success-

ful graduates from the specialized

academy the prospect of starting their

career at our place!

Frank Rheinboldt

Chairperson

Textile Business Administration BTE

I recommend LDT Nagold, because it

is the only academy specialized on

Fashion Business which offers solid

knowledge for the urgently needed

young trainees. Its practice oriented

advanced and further education deliv-

ers current knowledge, whereas be-

sides expert competence the promo-

tion of personality plays an important

role.

That’s how personalities from Retail and Wholesale assess the quality of LDT Nagold:

LDT Studies – a guaran-tee for job?

In the business jargon, students from

LDT are called Texer. The notion

stands for comprehensive qualifica-

tion and practical training. The LDT

degree holders are demanded in the

job market. Companies of Retail and

Wholesale such as H&M, Engelhorn in

Mannheim, Breuninger in Stuttgart,

Hugo Boss in Metzingen, Bäumler in

Ingolstadt, Gardeur in Mönchenglad-

bach, Escada in München, Marc O´ Po-

lo in Stephanskirchen and many oth-

ers advertise their vacancies on the

career board of LDT or directly call the

LDT lecturers to offer interesting posi-

tions – often only for LDT degree

holders.

Renowned companies establish con-

tacts with their potential employees

at regular presentations at LDT. More-

over, an overview of vacancies is al-

ways available at the students’ secre-

tariat and on internet (www.ldt.de).

Apart from jobs in Retail and Whole-

sale there are positions available at

purchasing associations, business con-

sultancies and marketing agencies.

Another prospect is to become self-

employed – be it as retail trader, busi-

ness representative or business con-

sultant.

LDT Nagold informs the fashion busi-

ness about recent trends and develop-

ments – e.g. as convener and co-con-

vener of business meetings such as

the LDT shoe congress, the HAKA con-

gress in cooperation with the indus-

try, fashion shows as well as within

the scope of the ERFA-Groupleaders-

Meetings.

Additionally, LDT organizes two major

events, which aim at bringing togeth-

er decision makers of the fashion

business and students of LDT in order

to facilitate the exchange of informa-

tion and experiences in a relaxed at-

mosphere: The LDT-Golf-Trophy and

the LDT-Adria-Challenge.

The LDT-Golf-Trophy

Within the scope of this sport-compe-

tition on a challenging 18-hole golf

course students of LDT and partici-

pants of the seminar are meeting

with therepresentatives from Retail

and Wholesale (Precondition: permit

to play at a 18-hole golf course). The

winners are handed over a trophy,

which is sponsored by the companies

participating in the event. So far fol-

lowing companies have participated:

The LDT-Adria-Challenge

Successfully initiated in the year 2003,

continued with even greater success

in 2004 and 2006, the event takes

place every two years with LDT

Nagold as organizer.

The following sponsors are funding

the charter-fees for 10 yachts:

The LDT-Adria-Challenge means excel-

lent teamwork training. The focus of

the time spent on the yachts is not on-

ly on the exchange of experiences be-

tween the individual crews compris-

ing of students and representatives of

the fashion business. During the time

spent on the yachts also the exercises

(surviving on a lonesome island et al.)

and the questionnaires (self-assess-

ment and assessment by others) de-

signed by LDT have to be solved and

filled.

The freedom from state funding ne-

cessitates a permanent search for

sponsors. One possibility to support

LDT Nagold and simultaneously to in-

troduce their own company to the

students, seminar participants and

guests at Nagold is the leasing and

design of a showcase. We would like

to say thank you to the following

companies, which utilize this oppor-

tunity of sponsoring LDT and present-
