BURCH

ANN WHITE ACADEMY GALLERYDEC. 2–JAN. 3, 2012: CHRISTOPHER BURCH, OILS Burch is an oil painter living in Virginia. Although he has studied painting and worked as a professional artist, Burch describes himself as being solidly planted in the mainstream of self-taught artists. As he puts it, “all artists eventually must teach themselves regardless of who helps them along the way.” Inspired by scenes and skies of the Mid-Atlantic, Burch paints magnificent oils that perfectly capture nature’s illumination.

JAN. 6–28: CUB CREEK FOUNDATIONLocated in the western foothills of Virginia, Cub Creek encourages and supports the artistic, aesthetic, and technical development of craftspeople and artists who work with clay, and enhances their opportunity and ability to produce traditional and innovative ceramic art of the highest quality.

FEB. 2–25: GREG BOYD, ACRYLICSGreg Boyd revisits and interprets Ice Age subjects and themes, blending prehistoric and modern materials and techniques to reflect the grace, beauty, and spiritual quality of animal figures from another time and place, while providing a fresh context in which to view them.

SPECIAL EVENTSaturday, Feb. 3: Artist gallery talk by Greg Boyd and screening of “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” 1:00 pm. Free and open to the public.Documentary filmmaker Werner Herzog has been given limited access to a cave in Southern France perfectly preserved for over 30,000 years and containing the earliest known human paintings. In this film Herzog asks what these early humans would have been like and what might have inspired their art as he attempts to build a bridge from the past to the present.
