Understanding Leader Development

Accelerated Learning Laboratory @ UWA

Struggling to develop your leaders fast enough? Need managers who think ahead, handle complexity, and cope with ambiguity? Want supervisors who ensure safe working without stifling production, or technical experts who also have people skills? Seeking staff who communicate effectively across cultures?

For innovative insights into these and related leadership challenges, take a look at the Accelerated Learning Laboratory at The University of Western Australia (ALL@UWA) – a world-class research facility for developing leaders, managers, and professionals across all types of organisations.

ALL@UWA is part of a prestigious network of similar facilities at the Australian Graduate School of Management (Sydney) and at Melbourne Business School. Our mission is to conduct leading-edge research on topics such as safety, leadership, well-being, and performance, and to run innovative leadership programs.

A focus on accelerated developmentIt is a strategic challenge for organisations to develop people sufficiently quickly to carry out leadership roles. At the same time, organisations are more complex, raising the performance bar for leaders. Using an innovative set of technologies, software, and materials, ALL@UWA creates a

Leading with impact

“The ALL@UWA is the ideal way for people to synthesise their learning into action. Learning in a traditional way doesn’t offer the sort of 360° feedback and learning that this environment can provide. Video of performance is a particularly powerful learning tool. You do it. You see it. You internalise the learning.”

dynamic learning environment to accelerate development. By creating opportunities for people to perform at their maximum level, instead of their typical level, ‘jumps’ in development can occur. Feedback, in combination with a safe but stimulating learning environment, further speeds the growth of expertise. Principles derived from decades of research on learning are built into our programs.

Our leadership programsWe offer customised programs on a range of topics. Illustrative suites of topics include:

Ì Leadership Fundamentals, e.g. managing one’s self, leading others, and leading change;

Ì Leading Teams, e.g. team design, team motivation and cross-cultural communication;

Ì Leading for Innovation, e.g. creativity and proactivity;

Ì Leading for Safety, e.g. process safety and resilience.

DistinctivenessAll of our leadership programs provide a mixture of traditional and experiential learning approaches, with the latter involving simulations

and real-world case studies. Unique aspects of our programs include:

Ì Developing individuals’ mental models of complex situations to promote deep learning;

Ì Going beyond the ‘what’ of leadership (behaviours) to focus on the ‘how’ and ‘why’;

Ì Explicit recognition of the role of individual differences in learning;

Ì Regular dynamic feedback; Ì Practical coaching in execution

skills to ensure application; Ì Long-term development rather

than one-shot training days; Ì Incorporation of research into

design and content.

Our facilityThe ALL@UWA is hosted in a newly-renovated facility on the beautiful UWA campus in Crawley, Perth. The laboratory contains state-of-the-art equipment with interactive smart boards and premium digital video recording equipment that enables facilitators to engage interactively with participants. ALL@UWA uses advanced software to capture data dynamically so that personalised feedback can be delivered to participants.
