DON’T WORRY...BE HAPPYAl Jones

The basic ‘Canadian dream’ is not one of excessive wealth, nor is it one of impoverishment, either. It lies somewhere in between in terms of household income and, generally, includes owning a home with a newer vehicle for each adult, as well as the raising of two, well-adjusted, children. They take three or four weeks a year for holidays, and are able to afford to keep their children in a few extracurricular activities, such as sports. middle class. Some of us make concessions so as to still live a middle class lifestyle on less income. Perhaps we don’t drive new vehicles, or if we do, we lease instead of buying. Perhaps we only take two weeks of vacation instead of four. Maybe we only enroll our children in one extracurricular activity instead of several. We may still own a home, but it’s smaller, or perhaps a condo instead of a house. In other words, we do whatever it takes to make things work. Measuring up against the Canadian dream, these should be disappointed families. Then there’s the working poor. These are households with either single parents, or perhaps two parents, working lower paying jobs. They usually rent, as saving for a down payment is not a feasible option. If they have a vehicle, it’s typically over ten years old. They budget just as hard as they work to make ends meet. Those of us much more fortunate, assume that this would be the unhappy class.I can hear some of our readers asking, “So, what are you getting at, Al”? I’m glad you asked. We’ve all heard the old saying, ‘Money can’t buy happiness’. Many of us repeat these words, but do we really believe them? If stats that monitor families are any indication, we should. Guess which class has the highest rate of divorce? I’ll give you a hint. Both sides can afford a lawyer to fight on their behalf for possessions and compensation. Guess which class has the lowest rate of divorce? Yup, it’s the couples that don’t have anything worth fighting over. Guess which class has a higher percentage of individuals in therapy? And although it could be argued that it’s because they can’t afford it, guess which class has the lowest percentage of people using therapists? Over the years, I’ve had opportunity to interview folks at all levels of financial status. I can tell you that I have found very happy people in each class. I can also tell you that I’ve found very unhappy people in each class. I’ve found people among the working poor who were very well respected by everyone. I’ve also met people among the wealthy who commanded no respect from anyone. I’ve met folks in modest homes, looking forward to an enjoyable retirement, and I’ve met folks living in mansions who lay awake at night, fearing bankruptcy. Through these experiences, I’ve come to a few conclusions:1) No matter how much we earn, we will always aspire for a little more;2) Happiness has nothing to do with what we want and everything to do with

appreciating what we have;3) Rich and poor are truly nothing more than states of mind. If we believe ourselves

blessed, it is so. Likewise, if we believe ourselves unfortunate, we are;4) No matter the compensation we each receive, we need to be proud of our

accomplishments if we are ever to be happy within our chosen careers. Every job, no matter the responsibilities, education, or compensation, can be made a successful career if pride in what we do dictates it so;

5) Someone with more money may have more opportunities, but not necessarily fully appreciate, or take advantage of, those opportunities; whereas someone with less money may have fewer opportunities, but are more likely to take full advantage when opportunity presents itself; and

6) Last, but not least, money does not dictate our level of happiness… we do. I would hope that everyone aspires to accomplish more. One should always have goals to better themselves and those around them. But through those challenges, we should remember that only we control the attitude we display as we strive to conquer those challenges. As long as we do so with pride, we need not worry... we can be happy.

Unfair PaymentCarlson was charged with stealing a Mercedes Benz and, after a long trial, the

jury acquitted him. Later that day Carlson came back to the judge who had presided at the hearing.

“Your honour,” he said, “I wanna get out a warrant for that dirty lawyer of mine.”“Why?” asked the judge. “He won your acquit-tal. What do you want to have him arrested for?”“Well, your honour,” replied Carlson, “I didn’t have the money to pay his fee, so he went and took the car I stole.”

Money’s Worth

A feisty 70-year-old woman had to call a furnace repairman.

After a quick inspection the man put some oil into the motor and handed her a $70 bill for labour.

“Labour charges!” she exclaimed. “It took you five minutes.”

The repairman explained that his company had a minimum one-hour charge on every house call.

“Well, I want my remaining 55 minutes of labor,” the lady responded, and she handed him a rake. The repairman spent the next 55 minutes in her yard bagging leaves.

With the help of Anna’s Spa & Wellness, Artsy Fartsy Face Painting, Traditional Glimpse Henna and Drizzzles Candy Store, The Hair Lounge was able to raise $5510.25 on Aug. 30 from the $10 Haircut Day, for the Airdrie Food Bank school programs. Everyone who donated their time, service or product should get a high five, I say. The Hair Lounge was booked solid with haircuts, which means they did 150 kids’ cuts in 5 hours. Parenting...

I’d had a pretty hectic day with my four-year-old. When bed-time finally came, I laid down the law: “We’re putting on your p.j.s, brushing your teeth, and reading ONE book. Then it’s lights out!”

Her arms went around my neck in a gentle embrace, and she said, “We learned in Sunday school about little boys and girls who don’t have mommies and daddies.”

Even after I’d been such a grouch, I thought, she was still grateful to have me. I felt tears begin to well up in my eyes, and then she whispered, “Maybe you could go be THEIR mom?”

Merchant CaptainOne of the world’s most famous merchant captains died, having long been admired by his crew and fellow officers. They remained puzzled, however, over a strange ritual he performed daily. While at sea he would lock himself in his cabin and open a small safe, take out an envelope with a note inside, and read it. After locking the paper back in the safe, he would return to his duties. For years this went on, and his crew became very curious. Was it a treasure map? Was it a letter from a long lost love? Everyone speculated about the contents of the strange envelope. After laying the captain’s body to rest, the first mate led the entire crew back to the ship and into the captain’s quarters. He opened the safe, got the envelope, and read the words aloud to an aston-ished crew:

“Port: Left; Starboard: Right.”

OUCH! “Now, Mrs. Hansen, this may sting just a little,” the doctor said, as he prepared the syringe of antibiotic and stepped forward to administer it. The patient suddenly SCREAMED in agonizing pain and crumpled to the floor! The doctor picked her up and stated, “Mrs. Hansen, this is ridiculous. I haven’t even injected the needle yet.” “No, you haven’t,” cried Mrs. Hansen. “But you DID step on my ingrown toenail!”

Substitute Teacher

Walking through the hallways at the middle school where I work, I saw a new substitute teacher standing outside his classroom with his forehead against a locker.

I heard him mutter, “How did you get yourself into this?”

Knowing that he was assigned to a difficult class, I tried to offer moral support.

“Are you okay?” I asked. “Can I help?”

He lifted his head and replied, “I’ll be fine as soon as I get this kid out of his locker.”

City invites residents to comment on municipal services

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA – Airdrie citizens are invited to complete an online survey to share their opinions, thoughts and ideas about city services and our community. The Look Closer survey, available at http://fluidsurveys.com/s/lookcloser, is intended to complement the other methods of public engagement the City participates in, Council meetings, open forums, the Community Needs Assessment and Citizen Satisfaction Survey.“As part of the 2016 budget delivery process, we are providing Council with the feedback received through this engagement survey,” says Lucy Wiwcharuk, Director of Corporate Services. “We will be presenting the data collected at the fall Council Budget Committee meeting. The meetings are open to the public and posted on our website at airdrie.ca/LookCloser”“As a council, we value input from residents, and actively look for more opportunities for citizen voices to be heard. The feedback from this survey, and from other forms of citizen engagement, will be taken into consideration over the course of 2016 budget deliberation,” says Deputy Mayor Candice Kolson. The survey consists of 11 questions, including:If you could improve one service provided by the City, recognizing that it could increase taxes, what would it be?What, in your opinion, is the single most important local problem facing Airdrie today? What is the most important thing that your municipal government does for you?The survey ends Friday, September 25, 2015.

John D. Majkot has a smile that could establish world peace and he can tell you anything and everything about trains and railroads. In fact, his mother wrote in his baby book that the three things he loved most at the age of three was trains, his father’s tools and cars.

As secretary and volunteer coordinator of The Alberta Engineering Society (AMES), as well as Iron Horse Park (IHP), at first glance everyone is able to tell trains are more than just a hobby for Majkot and other members. He wears classic train engineer hickory stripe overalls, with a matching cap that his grey hair tufts out of, and he has a blue bandana tied loosely around his neck. Other members wear similar attire.

“I’ll drive the steam engines,” says Majkot, “and I’ll drive the diesel engines, any chance I can get.”

Iron Horse Park, located in the centre of Airdrie is the home of three 1/8 size miniature passenger trains that for $3 per passenger, they can experience an interpretive rail journey over 1.6 kilometers of track through tunnels,

over bridges, and around a mountain. The rail journey is representative of a CPR trip from Airdrie to Vancouver, and back. It also includes an interpretive educational component that gives insight into the heritage of railways.

ACTION JACKSON’S

Your Local Family of Realtors

For Buying and Selling Real Estate

The club first started as the Calgary Model Engineering Society in 1971 by four members contemplating their retirement who still wanted to keep active. They decided to build their own model locomotive and track at a site near Bragg Creek.

When the real owners of the land developed plans for the site, they

asked the members to relocate. After searching around Calgary and area, they finally found the flat 11.4 acre lot located in Airdrie and leased it from the city.

“Everything that you see here has been built by members, volunteers and a little bit of sponsorship,”

says Majkot, “from a flat piece of land at the edge of town, with no condos around us and grain elevators in the background. In 1997 we started with a flat piece of dirt. We built the mountains we built the tunnels we built the bridges. Then we built a replica of a CPR station, using official plans.”

Maintaining the pristine nature of the park is the responsibility of members and volunteers who are dedicated to sustaining the natural habitat that attracts animals such as ducks, geese, rabbits, moles, groundhogs, and birds.

With the oldest members in the 80’s and the youngest at age 13, a full range of people from every walk of life combine their knowledge, abilities and experiences into the beauty of the park and the miniature trains.

According to Majkot they do it for fun, like all railroad modelers and enthusiasts.

“People say that railroading can get into your blood, and live steam locomotives are like a breathing, living thing” says Majkot “and if you have an appreciation for mechanical things, and railroad heritage, you can sense that.”

Other members of IHP agree, as smiles are exchanged between them when a steam locomotive comes into station trailing a small exhaust of white smoke.

For more information, visit ironhorsepark.net or better yet, visit them on Sundays from 11 to 4.

PETSHi, my name is Earnest and I am a handsome two year old neutered male, that is looking for a forever home.Looking at this picture, what you see is what you get - I am a big blob of affection. I get along with small, calm dogs, other nice cats and, of course, I loove my humans as long as they are willing to pet me. So you see, I am a very calm and quiet cat that craves his peace (is that so much to ask??).In my forever home I would like to be the one and only as there is never enough affection for me.If you think that I could fit into your home please call 403-890-0911.Thank-you for listening to my story.
