Not everyone has heard about Access, or knows what it can offer suitably qualified adult students. Access is becoming the main channel many adults use to reach Higher Education (HE). So if you ever wanted to gain a degree but life got in the way, this is your chance to turn it around.

5 | ACCESS TO HE & TEACHER TRAINING

WHAT IS ACCESS TO HE?Access to Higher Education courses are designed specifically to prepare mature learners for university entry. If you think that your current qualifications are out of date, or insufficient to gain you a place at university, these intensive courses will equip you with the skills you need for higher level education. Access courses focus on practical skills, research techniques and study skills, enabling you to develop areas of interest and gain the qualifications you need to support your university application.

Since 2010, Access to HE at Sussex Coast College Hastings has been increasingly successful in helping students from all learning pathways to reach universities all over the UK.

TASTER DAYSAll Access students are assessed for suitability during initial interviews and taster days. These run are over two days, between April and August every year, during which a range of Access activities take place.

A WORD OF CAUTIONAlthough Access students are not required to have any GCSE qualifications, it’s common for HE institutions to request literacy and numeracy evidence at level 2/grade C in maths and English to some courses. This is especially the case with nursing and midwifery courses, but social science / economics courses may also request these.

It is important that you check with your HE institution/s of choice before you apply to an Access course. SCCH will provide GCSE equivalents in English and maths at level 2 as part of the course. However, if your chosen HE institution asks for GCSEs, you will need to take those exams. You should be aware that it is hard work to deal with them and with the demands of Access.
