BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE

Fred B. Kniffen, professor of geography and anthropology, retired from Louisiana State in 1970, after a career that spanned forty-one years. Considered a pioneer in the field of cultural geography, he rose to the rank of Boyd professor in 1967. A prolific writer, Kniffen wrote several articles and books on the cultures of the world and America. Among his publications are CULTURAL DIFFUSION AND LANDSCAPES (1990), LOUISIANA; ITS LAND AND PEOPLE, THE INDIANS OF LOUISIANA, LOUISIANA HOUSE TYPES, and CULTURE WORLDS (1951); the latter he co-authored with Richard J. Russell. Much of his academic work dealt with the role of folk life and material culture in shaping American culture. In 1978 Association of American Geographers honored him for his role in the development of cultural geography. Professor Kniffen died May 19, 1993.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Papers consist of family papers, correspondence, writings, teaching materials (ca. 1936-1969), printed and graphic materials, and papers related to the Association of American Geographers. Family correspondence and miscellaneous items comprise the earliest portion of the collection (1879-1896). Later correspondence is primarily of a professional nature related to research, publications, and professional organizations. Writings include grant proposals, drafts, typescripts, and research notes pertaining to Kniffen's publications and lectures. Writing materials include information on various historical figures, both mythological and real, maps, atlases, and charts. Other papers are specific to classes in anthropology and geography; among these are exams, notes, and lists. Printed items contain pamphlets, programs, clippings, articles, ephemera related to Kniffen and his field of study. Photographs of various Louisiana parishes and locales along with illustrations used for publication comprise graphic materials. This group also includes photographic negatives.
