• Only naturally occurring wood compounds are added to the wood
• Pine contains 2% acetyls. Accoya containers 10x more.
• Result is a non-toxic, fully recyclable wood
• Modifies the wood to its core
• Unlike biocide impregnation
• Can be cut or profiled without exposing
unprotected surfaces
• The acetylation process is irreversible
• No risk of leaching/loss
• Permanent improvement in performance
• Acetylation changes wood at the molecular level
• Durability is achieved by stopping the rot fungi from digesting wood, not by killing them with toxins

THE MOST DURABLE WOOD - TERMITES
10
Mastotermes darwiniensis is the most destructive species of Australian termite.
Independent testing at the Australian Forest research Company has shown Accoya to be significantly more resistant to attack than hardwood timbers with equivalent durability.

ACCOYA GRADES AND SIZES
25
© Accsys 2019 26
Thickness No more than 1 mm less than the specified size. Width No more than 1 mm less than the specified size. Length No more than 20 mm shorter than nominal length. Moisture Content Less than 10%. Additional Grade Specifications Internal Defects Not Visually Present on Surface: Accoya® wood is produced from a natural resource. All wood has natural variation from tree to tree and board to board. This natural variation results in a product that can have defects naturally present within the wood. Furthermore, the process of cutting trees into lumber and drying of the lumber can induce defects such as shakes, cracks and checks. Accoya® wood is produced from lumber visually inspected on the surface to meet the grade specifications, however upon further processing internal defects can be discovered. Manufacturing Imperfections Lumber may have slight manufacturing related imperfections. Overall Deviation from Specifications Up to 5% of boards off grade shall be deemed acceptable.

MACHINING
39
© Accsys 2019 40
• Accoya machines easier than regular wood producing a very flat surface and improved profile definition
• Requires no special tools for cross cutting, ripping, planing, routing or drilling
• Acetic acid is minimal and will not corrode machinery if normal shop procedures are followed
• Ensure the chip extraction system is removing shavings to prevent indentations on the planed surface
• During machining a slight “vinegar” odour may be noticed
• As with regular wood, Accoya may distort as inherent stresses are released following deep profiling or cutting.
MACHINING
© Accsys 2019 41
Discoloration The acetylation process can result in discolouration and sticker marks up to 6mm in depth, and on occasion due to wood’s natural variation slightly deeper. This is typically overcome in an application such as decking by milling 1mm off the back side and a higher proportion from the appearance side. Removal of discolouration is not typically required when opaque coatings are used.

• Accoya wood can be glued using most commonly used wood adhesive systems
– Polyurethane (PU) (Foaming/low foaming)
– Two-part epoxy
– Phenol resorcinol formaldehyde (PRF)
– Polyvinyl acetate (PVA)– Typically good results, but can be variable
– Use extended clamp time and supported joints

Polyurethane (PU)
– Synthetic plastic-based material.
– Results will improve by the moistening of the materials to be joined.
– Recess-filling capacity through foaming
– Can be difficult to clean up (foaming)
– Creates a strong bond

Aliphatic resin
– "Refined" version of PVA with additional aliphatic resins
– Varieties are typically yellow or brown
– non-toxic, non-flammable
– More resistant to and water than white glue
– Not suitable for laminating or butt joints. May be suitable for supported joints.

– External fixings» Avoid ferrous metals (coated mild steel)
» Use stainless steel or brass screws, glazing pins, hinges
» Stainless steel to grades, A2, A4, 304, 316
– Internal fittings» No moisture, therefore all metals are suitable
– Perimeter of doors and sashes» Create an isolation barrier by coating behind all
hardware, including inside lock housings to reduce the risk of corrosion
» Impermeable products such as end grain sealer or epoxy resin will be more effective than paint, although that will be better than bare wood.

Coatings- Wood Preparation
• Accoya sands well, care must be taken not to be over vigorous as the softer earlywood will erode more so than the denser and harder latewood. This may show up as a “washboard” effect after the product has been coated.

Latewood (hard)

• Vulnerable areas:
– Sufficient and a liberal application of adhesive will perform as an end grain sealer in window frame, door and sash joints
– A proprietary end grain sealer should be applied to mitred joints, glazing beads , bolection beads, door stiles, sash linings, window cills
– Ends of transoms and horizontal glazing bars
– To end grain created by mortises or other cut-outs for locks or hardware
As with other wood species, end grain sealer is paramount for long term coating performance and the avoidance of coatings issues.

Factory Finishing is easy yet the rewards are immense!
• Small investment - no need to be “hi-tech”.
• Hundreds of “spray facilities” at the back of barns in the UK look like this..

Design;
• Rounded corners
• Water shedding angles
Application;
• Controlled environment
– Humidity 65%, Temperature 18o
– Avoid cold/damp conditions
• Plenty of airflow/air exchange
• Film weight and application methodologies should be in accordance with manufacturers recommendations.
Technical Support;
• As with all wood species, seek
input from the coatings’ provider
to avoid unnecessary issues
COATINGS – DESIGN & APPLICATION

ROUGH SAWN 50X150MM A2 (8/4 X 6”)
59
The choice of coating is important
Opaque paints;
• Accoya should have a stain blocking primer
– The same applies to Sapele, Idigbo, Redwood etc
• Water-based paints perform better than oil based irrelevant of wood species
Translucent stains;
• As with other wood species, a fungicide should be included in the coating system
• Stain finishes with a higher pigmentation and deeper colour offer a greater protection against UV light and will perform better.
• Clear or very light coloured stains should be avoided
COATINGS
Purely for cosmetic reasons; External joinery should not be left bare (uncoated) or include non film-forming coatings (oils) as the wood will discolour and look unsightly

For centuries, oak has been used as a building material and there are countless old buildings across the UK where interior oak beams have survived hundreds of years.
Although oak has a very good rot resistance, it is notorious for movement and it can be very difficult to maintain that beautiful golden colour over time.
Though Accoya is naturally a lighter colour than oak and has a different grain pattern it can be stained to match the colour of oak such that from any distance it is hard to tell the difference.
Benefits of Accoya over Oak include:
Accoya is that it has significantly better insulation properties than oak.
Accoya will actually last much longer than oak windows and doors.
So if homeowners want long lasting high performance windows and doors that have the appearance of oak without its problems, then Accoya is undoubtedly the best solution.

• The glazing system provides a barrier to arrest water permeation through the window or into the wood
• It is important that recognised designs and techniques are adopted which have been tested for air, wind and water leakage
