In 1998, longtime public school educator Don Shalvey joined forces with Silicon Valley entrepreneur Reed Hastings to launch Aspire Public Schools, one of the nation’s first charter management organizations. The mission they set out to achieve was simple and straightforward: grow the public charter school movement by opening and operating small, high-quality charter schools in low-income neighborhood and prepare these students for college. Now sixteen years later, Aspire is one of the nation’s highest performing and well respected school systems in the country, serving over 16,000 students in 40 schools throughout California and in Memphis, Tennessee. For the past eight years, 100% of Aspire graduates secured admission to a four-year college or university.Since its founding, Aspire has stayed true to Dr. Shalvey's vision of preparing students to earn a college degree. Aspire is committed to sharing our practices to help catalyze education reform in public schools across the nation. Today, Aspire has built on our history of reform to become a national education leader.

All around us we hear about the value of technology, project-based learning, deeper learning, new brain research and a better understanding of how kids——or any of us, for that matter——really learn. At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century. We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others. It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit. Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.

US News and World Reports has recognized Venice High School as on of the “Best High Schools” in the U.S. and Venice High has been awarded “Best High School of the Westside” for three years in a row. In addition to that, Venice boasts strong theater arts and music programs. We compete in academic competitions such as Robotics, Solar Cup, Academic Decathlon, Japan Bowl and Science Bowl. Every year, we graduate seniors to continue their studies at UC’s, Cal States and other top colleges and universities such as Yale, Harvard, Stanford, University of Chicago, MIT and USC.
