To climb the height of Big Ben you will need to climb up a flight of stairs 42 times. If you want to climb the height of the Eiffel Tower you will need to climb up a flight of stairs 130 times. BUT - going down doesn’t count!
Big Ben is one of London’s most iconic landmarks, built in honour of Queen Victoria in the mid-19th century, Big Ben stands 96 meters (315 ft) tall.
The Eiffel Tower is the tallest landmark in Paris. It was built between 1887 and measures 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building.

Learn the ABC backwardsHave you ever tried saying the alphabet backwards?
saying the alphabet backwards Is surprisingly tricky as we’re just so accustomed to the normal ABC-ing that it can be hard to get our heads around it. But, by using a few clever tricks you can learn do it and once you’ve learned it, you won’t forget it.
Maybe make up a story to help you remember the order of the letters, for example, or create a rhyme or even a song so that you associate the letters with the tune. Not only is being able to say the alphabet backwards a great party trick, but this is a great exercise in learning how to memorise things.

Climb the height of Big ben or the eiffel tower
This one sounds easy but it is very tricky. The goal here is to build a structure out of playing cards.
Balancing cards on one another is not easy and it becomes more difficult as you build the cards up and they get higher. It can be frustrating as it can get a bit wobbly and fall down a lot. If you preserve you might manage it.
How high can you build yours? The tallest tower in the world was 7.86 metres and was built by Bryan Berg in 2007.

It’s World Photography Day on the 19th August. Take pictures of wildlife in your garden or on a walk and keep a nature diary!
Share your pictures with friends and family to make them smile.
Create your own exhibition or gallery of artworks inspired by the things you love! From toys and special outfits to holiday souvenirs and much-loved teddy bears, there are so many items around the home to build an exhibition.
This is a great wet weather activity if you do it indoors, or you can also plan an outdoor scavenger hunt if the weather’s fine. All you need is imagination and a bit of time to set things up.
You’ll need to come up with a list of things for players to find. If you’re playing indoors you might choose things that you have in your house already – maybe 20 items beginning with the letter L, for example. or you might want to hide things specially – such as small pictures of superheroes. These can be hidden around your house or in the garden and players can collect them in a basket or bag. Alternatively, opt for a nature theme and ask people to take photos – maybe 15 things growing in the garden that are white, for example.
It’s a good idea to set a time limit. For younger children, 15 minutes is normally enough but older children can scavenge for longer.

learn makatonLearn to say hello without shaking hands
Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate.
Being able to communicate is one of the most important skills we need in life. Almost everything we do involves communication; everyday tasks such as learning at school, asking for food and drink, sorting out problems, making friends and having fun. These all rely on our ability to communicate with each other.

People all over the world are waking up to the extraordinary power of kindness – so much so that there’s now an organisation called Random Acts of Kindness that aims to make kindness the norm for people all around the world. What could you do today to contribute towards the World Kindness Movement?
It could be something really small like doing the washing up or making someone a card. Or, you maybe you’d like to start fundraising for a cause.

Walking is really good for you both physically and emotionally. It can help you to feel fitter and, even if it’s raining, a walk can help to clear your mind and lift your mood.
Walking somewhere you’ve never walked before can be a great adventure. Why not play I Spy or take a notebook and write down what you see? Or, if you’ve got a camera, you could take photos and then give a talk to people in your household about what you saw and did on your walk. A pedometer will tell you how many steps you’ve walked.

Love Lego? You’re not alone. Lego was voted the greatest toy of all time back in 2015! For more than 50 years, generations of children have been using the brightly coloured plastic bricks to build whatever their imaginations can picture. So, for this part of the Summer Challenge, why not create a Lego road map, with imaginary highways through an imaginary landscape? You could add crossroads, Cul-de-Sacs and dual carriageways. Maybe you could even re-create your own neighbourhood in Lego bricks?
It’s the chance for everyone to have their moment in the spotlight doing whatever they are best at. It doesn’t have to be anything grand – maybe telling a joke, singing a song, doing a trick or performing a dance. Children of all ages from your household can join in and the focus is on having fun, both as performer and audience. Make it a truly special event by creating a poster publicising the event, selling tickets and offering refreshments.
Do you remember how great it felt when you were younger and an older child showed you how to do something? Well, now you are older it’s your turn! Younger children will love to learn from you, so why not think about what you can teach them? Have you got a skill that they’d love to learn – maybe drawing or telling the time or even whistling?
Think about how you could teach them how to do what you can do. How did you learn? Was there an “Aha” moment when you suddenly discovered the secret? Maybe you’ll need to design something to help them learn or draw a diagram or write some simple instructions.

A time capsule can be a magical thing to create. The idea is to collect together items and put them inside a container to be opened at a future date. These could include drawings and handwritten notes, photos of you doing activities with your family, a copy of your favourite recipe, cuttings from newspapers and magazines and so on.
People in the future are likely to be interested in how we live now – including what ordinary life is like, the technology we use and all about you and your family. You might want to hide the time capsule for a stranger to find or put it away for yourself in the future or for your children or grandchildren!

Building a house for bugs is important in any season, as it will give them somewhere to shelter from the elements. Insects encourage pollination of flowers and vegetables. When we think of creepy crawlies we often associate them to the countryside, big gardens and parks.
Not many people realise however, that creating homes for bugs within cities is really important too. Just as those bugs in the countryside help pollination, those in urban centres are crucial to help welcome pollination and the growth of insect societies.

Bugs play an important part in World ecosystems and like any creature living on our planet, whether that is a human or a bug, we all need somewhere to call home.
Start to build up your Bug Hotel with all the items you have collected. Be inventive! There is no right or wrong.Once you are satisfied it is packed sufficiently full. Take a step back and admire your handiwork!
Find somewhere in the garden or your balcony to make it’s home. Remember to go and check up on it after a few weeks and see who has moved in. Just remember to be really careful not to scare them, we don’t want them to move out after we have made it so welcoming.

Upcycling is the process of turning something old into something new with a different purpose. It is a great way of reducing waste as instead of throwing something away you can give it a brand new lease of life and turn it into something useful again. Have a look around the house at unwanted objects, such as old bottles, toys, clothes or items of furniture.
Use your imagination to think how you might be able to transform them into something new – maybe furniture could be repainted or you could cover it in pictures cut from magazines or comics. Be creative and have fun!
